This place was decent, and that's about it. The reason why they got 3 stars instead of less is that the atmosphere of the restaurant is pretty cool and they have a huge beer selection. I ordered a couple of Texas craft beer on draft and they were served quickly and tasted great, but the problems began when we got our food. I ordered a patty melt which honestly left much to be desired. The burger wasn't seasoned very well and the bottom piece of bread was so soaking wet that it had to have been sitting up there for a while. While the food was exceptionally bad, I think that would prefer a Whataburger patty melt more than Haymakers which is not a good sign. My buddies got an open-faced burger that was smothered in gruyere cheese sauce. They said the seasoning was okay, but the massive amount of sauce made the bread soggy and was too rich for them to finish. Overall if I came here again it would probably be for beer, ambmionce and location but would skip the food. read more

There's a restaurant near my house called Haymaker. I started going there with my neighbor a few years ago. She's a pretty, young white girl. The service was great, the food was good, and we were asked to pay at the end of our meal like you would anywhere. I went there with one of my black friends. It took 20 minutes to get service and we were asked to give them a credit card before we could order our food. I asked the waitress why and she said 'they had changed their policy'. I went the next week with a white friend. No credit card required and great service. I went again with a black friend. Terrible service and again we were asked for a credit card before we could order our food. This pattern continued. Black friend, credit card required, white friend, no credit card required. Every single time. I finally spoke to a manager about it. He said that their policy changed depending on the time of day and how many people were there. That's horseshit! I talked to my black friends about it. They said it happens to them all the time. Racism is alive and well in America and it makes me sick to my stomach. I see now what black people have to deal with daily. Sadly, many of them are content with this treatment because it's how they have always been treated their whole lives. This is wrong. I have been here several times and this is first time I am so disappointed with the service. I usually get the same thing in the menu but last Saturday one of my friends ordered a cheese and I thought I tried it today... I did make a mistake ordering and when I approached the serves she was extremely passive aggressive and tried to tell me that I was confusing hummus with melted cheese. She approached the manager and I had to talk to him, he was also not very receptive and was bothered by the fact that I was trying to tell him that the waitress was rude. I have been very excited for Haymaker to open as I live in the area and tend to get pretty worked up about about sandwich's and beer. However, my first experience with Haymaker was mixed. I visited about three days into their opening and there were several popular sport ball games occurring, which together made for a very full house. My buddies and I milled awkwardly about for about 10 minutes waiting for some space at a table to open up. I would probably prefer a less hectic environment but certainly don't mind a crowd and it's honestly great that so many people are already out and supporting a this new local restaurant. Drink deal of the night was $2 "Mexi-cans", I had one before I wanted to switch over to something a little heavier. As others have mentioned, I wish their prices were listed on the menu. I was drinking pricier beer but was still a bit surprised to find my 512 Pecan Porter and Left Hand Milk Stout were each $6 a piece at the end of the night. I think in the future I'll probably stick closer to the deal of the day drink. The food I ordered was fairly unremarkable. I ordered the Pimiento Cristo which sounded and looked tasty but ended up being more of a novelty dish, reminded me of carnival food. The first section was exciting but I was pretty much ready for it to end by the last, and ended up giving it away. However, lots of great looking dishes on the menu and I will certainly be back to try more. The service was totally on point. I don't think I've seen a place up and running as efficiently as they seemed to be. I have been part of several restaurant openings and I can tell you with certainty we didn't pull it off this well. One thing to note though, if you're not here to watch a game, you'll probably be inundated with TV's. It would honestly be difficult to focus on anything else. Overall, I'm excited to come back to try more of the menu and watch some more football, but will probably pay closer attention to the beer prices, and go somewhere else if I'm looking for a quieter or sports-free evening. read more

Okay, so I've now been to Haymaker three times and am ready to render judgement. It's a noisy, raucous place that seems to hit the spot when I want to watch sporting events. The beer selection is very good and I especially like the fact that they seem to go out of their way to stock a lot of local selections. I mean, they have 4-5 different Live Oak products pretty much all of the time, plus other local brews. They have a Tuesday night special in which all Texas pints are 3.00, which is more than fair. They have drink specials every night of the week so check them out or ask your server. The food is tasty BUT the portions are small. I got the typical spinach/roasted nuts/feta cheese salad and I swear it was a single layer of baby spinach leaves on the plate, covered with some cheese and nuts. Tasty but it was consumed in less than three minutes. Overpriced. I have not ordered the burgers or bratwurst but my friends did and said they are pretty good. One thing that seems so arbitrary is that they charge 1.50 more for sweet potato fries than they do for their regular fries. This is hard for me to understand given that they are the same price when I go to HEB to buy them to bake for myself. Also, it seems to me that they've gotten better as they got their feet underneath them. What I mean is that I notice that a lot of the more negative reviews are from around the time they first opened in late summer. They definitely have improved over time. Also, I'm not sure why the reviewer who claims he/she paid 20.00 for three pints was charged that much. I believe pints are normally 4.50 each. And nine dollars for a 12 oz. bottle of beer is also incorrect. I can only assume some kind of mistake was made. If you're looking for a quite, romantic place, Haymaker is not it. If you're ready to get your beer on, it's definitely worth visiting. read more

They have Wisconsin-y/Midwestern food offerings, but they're all on the overly cheesy side for me. I know that's a plus for others, like my husband. The atmosphere was nice and laid back when we went on a Sunday afternoon and parking was easy. I'm sure it has a different vibe on nights when it's jam-packed. They had great background music--we wondered aloud if they had plugged into one of our playlists. They have a few TVs, but they weren't a distraction. Lastly, the staff was friendly and attentive. We were excited looking at the menu, but this food is heavy. Like in a greasy way. And the kids menu,which seemed reasonable and promising, was a bust. They messed up a PB&J. I didn't know that could even happen. It was soggy and full of a terrible mess of a TON of jelly. My sons would not eat the sandwich. I really hate to give it such a low star because they have 5 star beer and 5 star atmosphere. The 2 stars is for their food. Yes it is tasty but there is not a lot there for the steep prices you pay. I have examples: I've ordered the spinach salad a few times with turkey added (apples, crumbled cheese) and it is an excellent salad - if there was ANY salad there! The first time they barely but any spinach on my plate. The second time I asked for more spinach and they added 3 more leafs. Bummer because it is not a cheap salad. The Big and Burley sandwiched (I've ordered the Croque Monsiuer several times are $10 each and do not come with a side - so if you want fries or chips you pay several dollars more). The burgers and other sandwiches do come with a side but both times I've gotten fried all that is included is a small handful of fries. How much could wholesale fries cost????? The reason i am writing this review, though, is because last night was the last straw. I went in and wanted a burger. Their plain $9 burger is served on Texas toast, but other burgers that have bacon, etc are served on actual hamburger buns. I asked the waitress if I could sub in a bun instead of texas toast and she said no. I pressed if she could ask the chef and she said "he is very stingy with food and she knew he'd say no" (she confirmed what I already knew - asshole chef who doesn't know how to order food in the right quantity). She went ahead and asked and ure enough he said no because he's saving buns for the hamburgers they go with. So.....I ordered a $10.99 burger just to get a bun. It was a mixture of pork/beef patties with kraut. It didn't even taste like a burger but a squashed up sausage or a Boca burger ....and they forgot the kraut. Plus there were so few fries - like 15 fries. They need to get a new chef or someone more experienced regulating their food orders if they are running out. If scrimping on food is so important than they need to face the fact that they are going to have bad yelp reviews. Chose this place because of their close location and Mac n Cheese on the menu. (It was awesome.) Fun atmosphere, intriguing menu and excellent service. This was part of my and my daughter's weekly lunch date where we often try new places. We also had the habanero egg salad sandwich, sweet potato waffle fries and fried pimento cheese sandwich. We shared all three and next time we will save room for the fried PB and marshmallow fluff fried sandwich for dessert. Yes, the parking here sucks and the service is a bit slower when half of Austin's east side is at the Haymaker, but they go here because it's great! I can't give them less stars based off of their popularity, that seems counter-intuitive. I moved to Austin during football season last year and needed to find a bar to watch my team since I don't have cable. I went every time my team played and soon became a 'regular' for the football season. My normal bartender, Jo, was amazing, super friendly, fast, and was really good at recommending beers for me. She even remembered that I prefer IPAs/Pale Ales and let me know every time they got a new one on tap. Also a huge football fan, she would get really into the games with me, even though she was a fan of the Chiefs (I'm a Panthers fan). The food is a little on the pricey side, but in my opinion, it's fair priced for what you're getting. It's delicious, the portions are perfect, and come out really quickly. I also LOVE their bloody marys on Sundays--they come with a stick of a slim jim, a chunk of pepperjack cheese, a peppercini, and an olive. read more

Definitely avoid this place at all costs for a big sporting event. Managed and run by what seems a bunch of middle school kids that don't know how to show authority or even have the least bit of forward thinking and are definitely spineless. For one of the largest soccer games in this country's history, they don't have the thought that possibly the bar may get over crowded (it was over crowded for other non USA games) and may need to count how many people they let in. We had a table before 11am with enough chairs for our group. After spending 6+ hours there eating/drinking, there's an announcement about 20 minutes into the game saying they were over capacity and 'politely' asking people to leave or they would have to shut down the bar. What person is going to walk out of the game in the middle of it? Seeing no one was leaving, I knew that management would need to get forceful and start asking people without a chair to leave. Did they? NO! I even asked our waitress (who was outstanding) for a Haymaker shirt and I would start kicking people out (I didn't get a shirt). The manager or whoever was making the announcements made it 3 more times and finally at halftime announced EVERYONE in the bar had to leave...EVERYONE. Not just people without seats. EVERYONE including the people that had ben stuck reserving a table all day. The people that had been there the longest and actually had seating were punished because management wouldn't do anything to prevent this from happening. My friends and I showed up at 10:30a yesterday to watch a 5p World Cup match. Unfortunately, the management at Haymaker didn't bother having anyone monitor the door or in any way pay any bit of attention to how many people came into this place. The fire marshal showed up and insisted they thin the crowd, and instead of going around and asking the people standing, who had showed up maybe an hour prior to the game, to go outside so the people who had been there all day at the tables could stay inside, they just repeatedly got on the speaker and asked people to go to the parking lot -- which no one really did. So, despite being there all day spending money in their establishment, the place got shut down and we had to leave, missing a large chunk of the game. Absolutely unacceptable. I would highly suggest going elsewhere to watch sporting events that are important to you as this place is completely unable to handle it. I will never spend another dollar here. read more

He could have told us our game is playing on the other side of the bar and we'd happily switch tables but to let us know they favor some customers over others is just poor customer service! I've been here a few times now and have to say that I LOVE Haymaker. I know it's the sister of Black Sheep Lodge but I really LOVE Haymaker WAY more than BSL. Maybe it's because I've lived in Central most of Austin life or maybe it's because they actually have parking. While their food concept seems be a Northern/Midwest/Canadian style food (poutine, etc) their sandwiches are definitely the bright spot. Anybody that knows me knows that I'm a sucker for the familiar, I attempt to try new things but sometimes the sure fire things are the way to go. That said, their horse shoe sandwich is stuff of legend. I tend to go the pony shoe route though, single patty instead of a double, served on a slice of texas toast and covered with french fries and gruyere sauce. It's similar to the one at Hyde Park Bar & Grill but waaaaaaaaay better. I've also had one of their grilled cheeses and it was quite good but when you look at the price point ($10 for a sandwich or $7 for the pony shoe, I'll typically go the latter route). I've seen friends order the croque madam and monsieur and they both looked outstanding. They also have a great selection of beers on draft, cans and bottles. Their mixed drinks and cocktails are quite good as well. The main thing aside from food worthy of note is this, the service here is ALWAYS top notch. I've never had a negative experience here and they all seem to really enjoy working here. It always makes a dining experience that much better. read more

I really wanted to like this place and gave it several tries, but sadly there are too many downsides for me to give it a positive review. The food is mediocre at best. Some things are better than others, but nothing is super good, and it's over-priced for what it is. Beer selection is solid, but they don't list the prices, so a couple times I've gotten the bill and the non-fancy beers I ordered averaged $7 each. That would be fine if I'd ordered fancy, high-alcohol, Belgian beers, but these were the same Texas beers I can get for 4 or 5 bucks at most places in town, so I felt kinda ripped off. Having been in food service myself, I'm usually pretty forgiving of waiters and bartenders, but this place has some of the most consistently bad service in town. Waiters will ignore you for extended periods, seem pissed off and hurried, and annoyed if you ever ask them a question. Again, this is consistent over 4 or 5 visits, not just one bad experience. I don't usually review places, but I wanted to make sure it was known that after 10+ mediocre visits to this place, I finally had good service. Cassidy is a breathe of fresh air. She was very busy on the day I was there, but she went out of her way to make sure I was taken care of and happy. I have never had someone so much as try to have a conversation with me on other visits, and she was always smiling and on her game. The service at the bar is always a little better (the servers are downright rude and Inattentive unless you're a guy who the girls want to flirt with). Went to Haymaker for lunch today and it turned into an 1.5 experience (with little crowd) that I was not intending to have. We walked in and the bartender told us to sit anywhere after which a server immediately brought us menus and took our drink order. These came out rather quickly, but unfortunately we were not ready to order; BIG mistake. It took another 13 minutes for our server to return to our table. Sure we could have gotten up and hunted her down, but we decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and was, at the time, enjoying the conversation. Finally she arrived at our table, sans apology, and took our order. After another 37 minutes, our order arrived at our table. The food didn't make up for the wait, but it was okay. I had a patty melt with fries and my colleague had the Croque Madame. We finished our food and should have asked for the check when she brought the third refill of water (she was somehow very attentive to the water cup), but instead waited for another 8 minutes to receive it. We should have had our check card ready and waiting because it took me getting up from the table and hunting her down so that we could pay as we had already been there for one hour and thirteen minutes (1:13). We signed the check, left a tip regardless of her not deserving one and walked over to SugarMama's for victory cupcake. I paid specific attention to the times because I was expecting to be away for lunch for no more than an hour. If you have only have an hour for lunch, don't go to Haymaker! read more

I am a frequenter of Haymaker due to the soccer-friendly environment and tasty poutine! I go for nearly every Chelsea FC game with the Austin Blues and always have a good time. However, the lack of service is something to point out. It almost always takes forever to get the attention of a server, as they seem to be preoccupied with their own things and get overwhelmed by the business easily. Plus, I love coffee, and the coffee here gets a solid thumbs-down. Other than that, great atmosphere with great food! read more

One of the newer, hipper restaurants to pop up on the ever-changing east side. Sort of an upper Midwest farmboy type menu which makes it pretty unique around these parts. Excellent beer menu, especially with the local drafts. A Pearl Snap Pils on tap is downright dreamy when paired with this meat-and-cheese smorgasboard. The appetizers could function as entrees with their hearty fried goodness. Order any one you please but be sure to ask for gravy if it doesn't already accompany a dish, for it is not to be missed. The peppery white gravy was a great dipper for the fried pork sausage balls and it went very well with the poutine. The only thing I would have liked to see with the poutine was more melted curds. The gravy amount was good, but it was a little fry-heavy with less of the curd topping which was really the star of the show. I also ordered a sandwich - the Louisville Slugger - and had to take that sucker down with a knife and fork. Makes for great, filling leftovers too! You can bet this place gets busy most of its operating hours. read more

I went to Haymaker with some friends on a Sunday to watch the Cowboys vs The Texans game and to have some drinks. Before the game started the manager went around and made sure everyone was seated on the side of the restaurant that was showing the game they wanted to watch. I thought that was thoughtful since they were showing different games on each side. We had the breakfast shot first thing which consists of Irish Whisky and Butterscotch Schnapps chased with a tiny glass of OJ with a piece of delicious flavorful bacon in it. It was so perfect that it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. What a great way to begin an afternoon of boozing! We had some beers and enjoyed the game. They had a great beer selection which included the "White Trash Canned Beers" (i.e., Busch,Coors,PBR etc.) section. Not my bag of candy but I know many people that would appreciate these choices. I had a Live Oak Hefeweizen which was super cold and refreshing! Our waitress was sassy and took care of us always making sure we were happy and beered. The burger we spent 12 bucks on was meat, bread, cheese, french fries all mixed together in what reminded me of what a drunk, broke college kid would make at home out of sheer desperation. When I called the manager the next day to ask why my card was charged three dollars more than my receipt stated, they told me their system just does that while it's still pending to make sure you have enough to tip.....okay.....also I know my server was drunk or on something cause she was definitely acting that way and everyone at my table commented on it...but the manager said that's not possible (have no idea why it's not possible because I've worked in many restaurants where servers have been drunk while working so it is definitely a possibility). My sandwich was falling apart when I finally got it and I only ate less than half of it and was going to take it home to my dog, but I left it on the table in a to go box for 30 seconds and came back and it was gone....so $14 wasted!
