I called Ken with an emergency repair that I needed for my Honda CR-V on a Sunday (and Holiday weekend) Morning. My family and I drove up from Los Angeles for the holiday and needed to get back home. The muffler pipe/ catalytic converter pipe had slipped out of its place after we hit a piece of tire on the freeway and it needed to be welded back on. Most other places we called were either closed on Sundays or could not guarantee that the work would be done on the same day. Ken assured me that the work could be done on short notice and confidently told me to bring the car in. Upon arrival, he inspected the car and said with a smile, 'That's easy to fix!' Within about an hour and a half, he called me to come pick it up. He had let me know that the manufacturer's weld did not go all the way around and that he had welded it securely into place. He even told me that his weld had a lifetime guarantee! I will definitely be coming back to Ken and his Service Team when I am back in Hayward. I recommend his services and reasonable pricing. I was looking for a place to get a smog and I came across this place on Yelp. I called to check the of a smog for my car. He checked the price for me, but failed to tell me they aren't currently doing smog. I found that out after I've already drove all the way there and him telling me that the parts are on back order and he doesn't know when they will come in. Why wouldn't you tell a customer that's inquiring about a smog that you aren't doing smogs at the moment I have no clue. I'm giving one star because this could have been avoided and he wasted my time. read more

Amazing Shop, Mechanics and Owner along with one very Hilarious Wife! My son purchased a 2005 Subaru about a year ago. I decided to take it to Subaru to have them look at it. They did an assessment and we had to replace some parts, which was to be expected based on the age and the fact that it hadn't been serviced in quite some time. We were happy with the initial service and decided to keep going there for maintenance. This changed quickly when during our last visit we were hit with an almost $12k estimate for some "urgent" issues. I was confused because I refused to believe these issues happened over night and why weren't they caught during previous visits? They wanted me to leave the car for service and I told them I had to make up my mind if this was even worth keeping the car. I went off in search of a second opinion and this is when I found Hayward Auto Care. I visited the shop and spoke with Ken the owner. I told him the situation and he told me to bring the car but not tell him about Subaru's findings nor tell him what we had done to date by Subaru. I thought ok, this guy plans on doing a complete assessment. Ken took the time to explain what he planned on doing then proceeded to give me a tour of his shop. His shop is so clean you can literally eat food off the floor!!!! After we spoke, I returned on Saturday to leave my son's car. Ken called us the following day and wanted us to come in and talk about his findings. I'm used to getting bad news over the phone but when he said come in, I was scared. He clearly explained his findings with a lot of detail and allowed my son and I to ask questions as he explained. When he was done with his assessment, I felt like this was my guy so we left the car there for Ken to do the repairs. I immediately went home and compared Ken's findings to Subaru's and one item matched and that was that the major service!!!! A few days later we returned to pickup my son's car. Ken pulled the car out popped the hood and we were at a complete loss for words. Ken steam cleaned my son's engine. Subaru never once offered to do that and Ken just did it for free. After we picked our jaws up off the ground Ken took my son out in his new car (yes, I said new car because at this point that's what it had become). During their ride Ken showed my son how the repairs enhanced the cars performance, and my goodness did it... The bill wasn't even 1/3 of what Subaru was trying to charge us for. All this car needed was its major maintenance, brakes, and back rotors and not a $2500 oil pan replacement along with the other unnecessary stuff Subaru said we needed. It's been 4 weeks since we had the service and we've not experienced any issues with the work, nor has there been any new issues. Ken has your best interest and most importantly your safety at heart. He will not lie or sugar coat the truth because he means what he says and stands by his word. You can depend on the work being done right! No one else will work on my son's car. I've been coming here for years for smog inspections and general car issues and have always had wonderful service. I brought my car in recently for something more complex and Ken was responsive and very thorough with what was wrong and the other issues that were found along the way. Two great mechanics here - really unusual to be able to talk directly with them - usually one has to deal with service advisors as middle men which adds one more step of confusion in what can be a game of telephone. Prices seem ok. An oil change here was more expensive than the Ford dealer but its faster and more convenient. The dyno wasn't operable for a smog check of an older car. No big deal - few smog stations put money into this sort of thing anymore- the smog business is a tough one with very slim margins I hear. Also noteworthy is that they will not install parts that you supply. I have such an old car sourcing parts sometimes takes 3 days and is a job in itself. I get that mechanics make money selling parts and they don't want to be responsible for warranty on labor related to parts I supply but other similar places usually just charge more for labor to compensate for the money they lose on parts and make a note that there is no warranty whatso ever. I really like OEM parts but just don't like the long waits at the dealer... Would be great if the owner or manager would give more credit and power to the mechanics. Its seemed almost ridiculous that they had to call for prices from somebody that wasn't present. Arguably a person who knew the least about the car or situation was in charge of pricing. Would be better if mechanics would use then online tool that shows hours of labor for a particular job and the needed prices for parts. Agh, still in search for a good mechanic. I have so many cars and work that needs to be done but probably won't ever return here. read more

I called about a coolant flush on a Sunday and said they had time for me so I passed by. I said I had the appropriate make specific coolant and asked to use it. I was ready to until they quoted me$240 saying this was a 1.5 hour job and they charge $175/hr for European cars. The company representative told me this was a good deal as they were not gonna charge me for coolant and would be a fraction of what the dealer would charge me. I went to the dealer the next day and paid $180 and had a much stronger sense that they knew what they were doing as it relates to my make/model. I appreciate shops open on Sunday, but not at the cost of ripping you off more than a factory trained technician at the dealer. *edit, thank for calling into question my honesty. I won't expect an apology for you nastygram as it's hard to refute facts. Good luck if you deal with these jokers. read more

I brought my burgundy Mazda 6 2007 car to get it fixed. Whenever I start my car my battery would stop and the check engine light would come on together but my car would still be on, I just wouldn't be able to drive it. I went here to get a diagnostic to get this problem fixed but they only change my brakes because that was one of my request but when they did the diagnostic they fixed the problem that the diagnostic found but not the actual problem I came in for and I paid $985 for the services and for them to hold my car in the shop for a day or two. I called them about it and they told me I would have to get another diagnostic because it may be a new problem when this was the reason I came in to get my car fixed in the first place. read more

They were efficient, thorough, and fair. They called to explain the repairs needed and offered the various repair options. I decided to get all repairs done today and the car was ready earlier than discussed. The repairs and payment were straightforward. No hassles nor hidden fees. My son brought in his girlfriend's souped-up 2001 Honda S2000 in for a clutch fluid change since it hasn't been changed for quite some time now. The car was finished by the end of the day and even mentioned how he noticed that the clutch is going bad and told us to replace it as soon as possible. Ken was very knowledgeable on Hondas even showing me all of the Hondas he have at the shop! The man truly loves Hondas hahah! The professionalism and service by him and staff was amazing and I would definitely come back here with my other cars. My car needed to have the rear brake pad's replaced and I came in because I saw the reviews were good. He gave me an estimate of $275 and continued to say I was a new customer so I would receive a discount, my new price was now $255. His wife proceeded to write down the price on the paperwork and I signed it and left for almost 2 hours. When I came back to pick up my car they changed the price to $355. I asked why did the price change? Can I see the paperwork. Then they started to speak their language and continued to say no it's $355 and never showed me the paperwork I signed. I am very disappointed with the dishonesty and will never come back. I know what price they said because I needed to transfer money into my account so I could pay for it. And maybe I should've never told him a different business quoted me $400! He even had the audacity to say oh no they are over charging you but he did the exact same thing. read more

Had to get a steering wheel oil pump change here for around $700, which does seems quite high in comparison since average it's usually around $500. The person did explain it was because the pump for my model is hard to get to hence higher labor fee. The people working were quite polite. read more

Super friendly people! I called ahead to see if I needed an appointment. They told me to come on in. I live close by and expected to be there in no time flat. I couldn't find this place to save my life, so I called and they did a great job of directing me to their location. It is hidden behind a car lot, so not easy to find. They took my car right away, as promised. I chatted with one of the mechanics for a while and before I knew it my car was ready... and I passed! Please stay away from this shop. The owner over charged his services to me. When I brought my car in because there were signs of "check engine" and "trac off", he said he needs to use a computer to diagnose it. He charged me $185 to simply do the diagnosis. Afterwards he called me and said the problem was the fuel injection, so he needs to clean it for me. The quote for that service was $585. I was shocked! I did my own research online before committing to that service, turns out that should have been a cost of replacing a new fuel injection. So when I asked the owner, what would be the cost for a replacement instead, he quoted me a few thousands! I immediately took my car back and left the shop once I realized the owner was trying to take advantage of my situation. So please save yourself a trip and stay away from this shop unless you want to throw away your money and get taken advantage by the owner. read more

I came in because I was hearing rumbling noise from the back of the car. This shop charged me $90 to diagnose it. When I came back, Ken told me the car needed new tires and alignment. He said there was something else wrong with it, but he didn't know what it was and wouldn't diagnose it without replacing the tires. I also asked if they would do the alignment, but he also refused to do that without replacing the tires. I got the impression that Ken just really, really wanted to sell me a new set of tires and possibly additional diagnostics. I don't want to say that he was completely full of *, but I was told by other mechanics that if your car needs an alignment, you do it before replacing tires. Otherwise, you cause unnecessary wear to your new tires. In any case, I definitely got the impression I was being taken advantage of. The tires were only half worn, and I wasn't ready to replace them. I went to another shop that charged me $100 for an alignment. The noise is gone, and I haven't replaced any tires. The experience was really disappointing. I had gone to the old location in North Hayward a few years ago. While Ken wasn't exactly the most friendly guy back then, he was at least honest and affordable. Don't know what has changed since then, but I won't be back. read more

Extremely pleased with the service at Hayward Auto Care! They are a very knowledgeable shop and they go the extra mile to do a thorough job. I took my Subaru Tribeca to get the fluids changed before I drove to Las Vegas. They close at 5pm, but they worked on my car until 7:30pm on a Friday so I could head down the next day! They know how to handle a Subaru, they put the OEM conditioner in the coolant, checked the head gaskets for any leaks and did everything right. They even washed the car and shampooed the engine for no charge! They called before they did any work to let me know the price and were honest about the what work needed to be done now and what work could wait awhile. Can't say enough good things about the shop. Take your car here, you will be glad you did. They are straight forward and hard working, as only a husband and wife shop can be. read more

I did a little research on Yelp and found Hayward Auto Care cause I didn't really want to take it to the dealership. Ken stated he used to work for BMW so he works on Mini's. Really respectable establishment and excellent service, I don't know much about cars, and all I went in with was the knowledge that it vibrated weird on the highway. From the very first phone call to the completion of selling my car Ken, Wendy and Sam at HAC have been fantastic!! I saw all the positive Yelp reviews and the great people at Wheel works who said this type of engine work is not in their repertoire recommend HAC to me so I already knew I was in good hands. Every interaction with Ken, Wendy and Sam not only made sense and was helpful but they were each so friendly and professional that it was enjoyable to communicate with them. They made me feel like you do when you are with likeable friends you have known for a long time. After I realized that working on the engine or replacing the engine would cost me more than the car was worth Ken was so helpful with information about what to do about selling my car, getting another car, who to deal with, where to look and with keeping my motionless soon- to-be-junked car in his driveway for as long as I needed. He looked out for my ease and convenience. The first tow company I worked with ended up not keeping their commitments and being impossible to work with but through it all everyone at HAC had my back and helped me every step of the way. I won't go into the long story, that post is on a different company but I had to spend over four hours waiting at HAC and the whole time everyone there made me feel at home, always smiling, available and every interaction was satisfying. As I was speaking with the second tow driver on the phone I had left HAC and was going to ride my bike back to to meet the driver when he got there. I got there just behind him pulling in the driveway and I see Ken coming around the corner with my car key in his hand and his phone to his ear. Ken said " Oh! I was just calling you to let you know he is here. He was just on it every time. I found out Ken and Wendy are married so HAC is a family owned business and they have been here for years. They were honest reliable and while ultimately my car was not worth saving, they took care of all the details that need to be taken care of for an end-of-life car with me which was daunting to say the least. I have finally found a mechanic that I can trust to get the job done right! I brought my Lexus in last month for a 60K service. It was finished in a timely matter, and the car drove so much smoother. So I decided to take my 2006 truck with 177K miles in for service since it was driving pretty rough. I am so glad I did. It runs so good that it doesn't even feel like the same truck.
