I chose their "spicy dog" and a "datil dog", two spicy undertakings and they gave me a bit of chili on the side to see if that would be an appropriate topping. Let's start off with the negative, their chili was bland and uninspired. Plus it contained beans. certainly not acceptable as a chili to top a hot dog. On a positive, the hot dogs sans the chili were great. The datil dog, with sauerkraut and datil pepper mustard was truly a delectable dog that paid homage to the datil pepper, a pepper indigenous to the Saint Augustine area. Very disappointed. The "hot dogs" were more like sausage then anything. They tasted like beef sausage. And the ends of them looked like how smoked sausage looked. Definitely not any type of hotdog we have ever had. The guy at the counter was probably the most un polite and un friendly encounter we have had in the entire trip. The chili was very watery and beany not much meat just juice and beans. My kids ate maybe half of there's if that and I don't blame them non of us like beef sausage the texture is just to firm and dense. When you bite into one of their dogs, you will feel and hear that sucker SNAP! lol I read another reviewer say it bothered them but it had no negative effect on me whatsoever. I enjoyed it. It wasn't because it was cooked too long or anything because the hot dog itself was not too tough or overdone. It's just the snappiest hot dog wiener I've ever grubbed on. The service was also top notch. My issues with Hazel were the slaw and chili. The slaw was flavorless. I had to add salt to mine to give it a hint of taste. When I come back, I'm a have to doctor the heck out that coleslaw with salt, pepper, hot sauce, brang my own seasoning salt, onion powder......I'm not really going to being seasonings but you get the picture. The chili needed more tastiness as well. It wasn't as bland as the slaw but it wasn't too far ahead in the Mouthwatering Marathon at all. What WAS stellar were the fries. They were perfectly salted. I got the plain ones but I'm definitely looking forward to trying the chili cheese ones.............eh.........on second thought, maybe just the cheese ones. Nothing says spring and summertime like a good ole hot dog! I've been spoiled by Dog Et Al in Tallahassee, THE best chili dogs I've ever eaten from a restaurant so far, and while I wasn't in Tally, I still would like to know I can travel to another city and find something close to an equivalent. For the untrained eye, the French fries may appeal to be oily and poorly cut, do not let this fool you! I can rarely resist trying these types of roadside stands when traveling to a area for a day trip. I rather eat small portions all day long than sit down to a full size lunch or dinner unless that is specifically the destination or original plan. This allows me to experience the local culture and always offers a variety which I throughly enjoy, so when I spotted Hazel's Hot Dogs I quickly made a trip around the block and pulled in, of course I yelped it first. I usually like to keep it simple and try the basic offerings this usually gives me a snap shot of what they are serving up and most of the time represents the basis of why they decided to open their door to the public in the first place. So today I chose a simple chili dog and bottle of water, the chili dog was served up in a styrofoam contained sized to fit a single dog, a simple paper wrap would of met the requirement since I was going to eat the dog onsite and lessened the impact on the local landfill but that's a different issue. The hotdog bun was soft and fresh and slightly warm but not toasted it made a great platform, the hotdog itself was a little disappointing I prefer all beef but this appeared to be a combination of ingredients that I couldn't identify or really cared to, this was covered in a nice tasting chili but had beans in it not that I have anything really against bean but I would of liked to have had the no bean option. I can see the popularity of this place by the sheer number of people stopping in, but this is a tourist area and it seems to work but I'm not sure it's a local hangout, so in my opinion it's just okay the staff was friendly and it appears to be clean so give it a try and form your own opinion. read more

Try the spicy dog! Ya know, I'm not really one to eat hot dogs, but when I have a craving I now know where to get my fix! I was out in St. Augustine last weekend and stopped here for hotdogs. The place itself is very unassuming. A typical park and walk up spot where the dogs are cooked in the back and emerge with greatness. I'm super plain and got a simple hot dog with ketchup and mustard. My honey, on the other hand got the Spicy dog (has sauerkraut on top) and the Datil dog (has datil peppers, relish and onions). (Or maybe I'm completely wrong because the Spicy dog wasn't spicy?? I'm not sure, I'll update that later haha) The dog itself snapped a little when you ate it; it was a new texture and I enjoyed it.
