Try the spicy dog! Ya know, I'm not really one to eat hot dogs, but when I have a craving I now know where to get my fix! I was out in St. Augustine last weekend and stopped here for hotdogs. The place itself is very unassuming. A typical park and walk up spot where the dogs are cooked in the back and emerge with greatness. I'm super plain and got a simple hot dog with ketchup and mustard. My honey, on the other hand got the Spicy dog (has sauerkraut on top) and the Datil dog (has datil peppers, relish and onions). (Or maybe I'm completely wrong because the Spicy dog wasn't spicy?? I'm not sure, I'll update that later haha) The dog itself snapped a little when you ate it; it was a new texture and I enjoyed it. They were also thinner; different from your typical ballpark frank. The fries were awesome! I'll go again for sure. It's cheap, good, and they have ice ceam! You can't go wrong. read more

WE CAN'T TELL YOU WHO MAKES THEM: But they are from NEW JERSEY! I've been driving past Hazel's for years while on vacation in "The Ancient City" (St. Augustine is America's oldest city), but this was the first time I stopped in for a bite. Hazel's (I can only assume Hazel is the weiner dog featured on the Hurricane Irma-damaged sign, since the owner's name is Perry), is a small shack located a few minutes drive from St. Aug's historic district on the side of a busy thoroughfare. Parking is fairly easy with ~10 spaces, but they can fill up at lunch time. Also, each order is prepared one at a time by 2 guys, so service can be a bit slow if the line stretches more than a few people. A couple of covered picnic tables and two bar stools if you want to eat somewhere besides your car. Hazel's serves a pork-beef [correction, they changed to all-beef], natural casing dog that apparently comes from NJ. But when asked, they wouldn't tell me who makes it. If you are into hot dog culture (yes, there is such a thing lol, check out the Hot Dog Nation group on Facebook), this is important information, and some stands like to keep it a secret. In interviews online, the owner claims it is "specially produced" for them, but hot dog lovers know that is probably not the case (as HDN's John Fox calls it "the biggest lie in the business").*** But it's a well-spiced, snappy griddled dog, on a typically squishy store-bought bun, at a reasonable price. I had two: ~CHILI DOG ($2.29): Topped with a very mild, thin meat & bean chili that tastes mostly like beans. I added some onions ($0.40). Kinda boring. ~DATIL DOG ($2.69): More interestingly, this was topped with sauerkraut (a bit limp) and a local specialty, mustard made from Datil Peppers. Menorcan Datils are almost exclusively grown around St. Augustine, have great flavor, and challenge Habaneros for heat. My favorite of the two dogs. Don't even bother with ketchup for these. You can also get Chili Cheese fries if you want ($3.49). Worth checking out if you are in the area. ***Note added in proof: Leave it to John Fox to actually call the restaurant: "I called and spoke with a young guy who answered the phone. The dogs are not beef and pork but all beef [strange, since a published 2016 interview with the owner said pork-beef]. He said he was not allowed to give the supplier as per the owner's instructions. I believed he wanted to tell me. I was given enough hints that I can say with a fair amount of certainty that the franks come from Schmalz Provisions in Springfield. They do make a beef dog. Years ago they made one for Lutz Pork Store. They do make a special (cheaper) recipe for Hot Dog Johnny's" John goes on, "I saw that article as I searched online before I called. When I called one of the first things I said was that I knew the dogs were beef and pork but I wanted to ask a question. He immediately said that they were natural casing beef dogs. They sure look like beef dogs. And they do look like Sabretts as Scott mentioned. I know Schmalz is available there and a few things said led me to believe they are Schmalz." read more

WOW!!!!! I mean wow-town, this is such a sweet little spot. If you are around St. A, you must stop here. The dogs are perfect, I got one with Datil Mustard, it was spot on, and so reasonably priced. My gal got the basic combo, and the fries are knock out. This is a great, easy, quick alternative to the tourist trap restaurants this city is known for. Support a great local establishment! Wow - such good hotdogs and fries! I can't even describe how good the dogs are. Steamed buns and the dogs have some sort of casing on them that just makes it pop with each bite. The fries are homemade and prob the best I've ever had. They do have weird hours so be prepared for that. Closed Sundays. Close at 6 pm (I think) the other days. We come here every time we come to St. Aug. Every time. Oh, also it's very affordable! My husband and I ate for $12. What can I say about this place... We tried going by there once the day before and found them closed. That was disappointing because I was craving a hot dog and they proved to be hard to come by in this region. We came by again the following day and I ordered a slaw dog and a bacon and cheese dog, and a huge Fanta. I tried the bacon and cheese dog first, and immediately found that the hot dog itself was covered with liquid nacho cheese and one strip of bacon. That in itself was kind of disappointing, but that disappointment continued for me when I took my first bite and discovered how much snap the hot dog had. That's totally personal preference, of course, but too much snap for my taste. They seemed like they had been cooked too long perhaps? I like snap in a hot dog but you could actually audibly hear the casing break when you took a bite. Not the end of the world. I finished the bacon and cheese dog and moved on to the slaw dog--which, unfortunately, I threw away after the first bite. The slaw tasted bland and worst of all it seemed to be warmish, or even room temperature. It wasn't what I expected. I would not recommend the slaw without something else on it as well, like chili. I didn't get chili because their chili appears to have beans in it based on other reviewers photos. Frankly, I wouldn't recommend the slaw at all actually. Moving along: The staff was super friendly, and I enjoyed being able to eat outside and watch the cars go by. They have a nice sheltered area with picnic tables to keep you out of the sun. I also found the restroom to be surprisingly pretty clean. I didn't expect that. All in all it genuinely pains me to give Hazel's a three star review, but half of my meal ended up in the trash can and the other half wasn't very impressive either. Bummer! This is a good place for a quick bite! I got the chilli cheese dog and a root beer float, they were both pretty good. I wasn't amazed by the hot dog. My dad got the kraut dog, which he liked, and a chocolate shake that he didn't like too much. It tasted like they used fake chocolate syrup. Hazel's is THE place to go for a quick and yummy hotdog lunch! I was initially attracted to Hazels' after I kept seeing their parking lot packed with workers' trucks and lines out to the street! Don't let this scare you off though! The service is extremely fast and you'll be on your way in no time! I love the Spicydog (not too hot, but it has a great kick), hand cut french fries, and a cold soda. They serve all types of hotdogs and I believe they have some sausage/brats on the menu (but I can't be too sure of it).They only take cash, which is a bummer sometimes, but they're right next to a gas station if you needed to hit up the ATM. Have been driving past this place for a while now and when it's open there is always a line up. The menu is all written on the side of the wall outside beside the takeout window. We placed our order at the window for a couple dogs and some fries. They take cash and credit here. While we waited we saw a few picnic tables set up on the side. There was also a counter with a couple stools to the side. I peeked in the window and watched the cook busily cooking up the dogs. I ordered a cheese dog and saw the cook pouring cheese over my dog. Liquid gold I did not expect. In my head I thought it would be a slice of cheese. Hubby got sauerkraut on his and it was hot sauerkraut not cold. The fries were ok. Fresh cut and tasty. First visit today. Cool place. Great fries and service was quick even though they were busy. Steamed bun was spot on but the dog had a tough texture to the casing. The flavor was good though. I had fresh onions and chilli. The onions were more than past their prime. Almost as chewy as the dog casing. The chilli was good but not remarkable. I am not a fan of beans in hotdog chilli. Have eaten here many many times . This place reminds me of the hot dog stands I would frequent as a kid in New York and New Jersey.. walk up and order to eat in car or at the two picnic tables. The hot dogs are made for this place and are grilled on a flat top and have a nice crunch to them as a natural casing hot dog should. Many combinations can be purchased to satisfy any lover of hot dogs . The fries are double fried so are very good .
