Car was all done and waiting for me when I arrived!
    Shel G.

Really happy with the work done by HB Auto & AC. Needed new brakes on my Subaru Outback. Called for an estimate, pricing was fair and everything was explained. Brought my car in for an appointment and they were able to add on an oil change and take care of everything in just a few hours. Would highly recommend this shop for anyone needing work on their car, I'll be bringing all our cars in here whenever they need some work.

My family has been going to Schmitty's for at least ten years because of their quality and honesty…read more We like having everything done at one place, by a locally-owned business. Schmidty's also honors their warranties. Recently, I got a message on my dash board that my tire pressure was low in one tire. It was from a nail or screw. Schmidty's replaced it under warranty. They warranty all their tires. Last week, my car wouldn't start. I got it jumped and learned it was down to 11 percent. I was encouraged by the roadside assistance technician to purchase a replacement battery with a three year life, but I chose to take it to Schmidty's out of loyalty. My four year old battery turned out to have a five year warranty and Schmidty's replaced it. Yes, there was labor, but the new battery was no charge. My previous experience for 20 years was with other service companies because I drove a fleet vehicle and was required to use certain brands. I don't recall ever being told something that needed replacing was under warranty. That is why Schmidty's shines, in my mind. I did not have to point out the warranties; they brought them to my attention. They also saved me having to get my vehicle towed by allowing me to drive it with them right away so the tire went flat and the battery died on their property.

The part itself wasn't expensive, but they insisted the labor was extensive and pressured me into getting it repaired immediately. not trusting my instincts but also needing my car back quickly, I went ahead with the repair. About a month later, I found out the issue was actually related to a recall. That meant I could have had the entire repair done at the dealership for free. What makes it worse is that they clearly knew something was up they even told me they had to contact the dealer for information. Because of that, I ended up paying a couple THOUSAND dollars I didn't need to spend. In hindsight, they were aware it was likely a recall and didn't disclose it properly. Very shady experience definitely go somewhere else.

UPDATE: What I discovered after posting my original review made this experience considerably worse…read more My family brought vehicles to Gustafson Brothers for three generations--my grandparents, my mother, and then me. We kept supporting them because they are a longtime Huntington Beach business. That history is exactly why this feels like such a betrayal of trust. I paid $631.30 after bringing in my van for a long-crank/hard-start problem. The invoice included $182.50 for a crank/no-start investigation and stated: "The 'long crank' has been eliminated." It had not been eliminated. I returned because the same problem remained. Gustafson then identified a weak fuel pump--the same component I had told them from the beginning that I suspected. I tried to resolve this reasonably. I did not demand a large refund. I asked them to apply some compensation toward basic fluid maintenance the van needed. They refused. I later discovered another serious problem with the work. The invoice charged $19.98 for positive and negative battery terminals and $182.50 in labor to install them: $202.48 total. Less than a month later, my van suddenly lost electrical power while I was in Long Beach. When I opened the hood, one newly installed terminal was so loose I could move it by hand. Tightening it did not make it clamp securely to the battery post. The other newly installed terminal was also loose, and wiring had come loose at the connection. This became a recurring loss-of-power problem. I repeatedly had to improvise temporary connections just to finish trips because the terminals would not securely fit the battery posts. I am not accusing anyone of doing this intentionally. I have no evidence of intent. I do not need to speculate. The workmanship I personally found is troubling enough. If a professional repair shop charges $182.50 in labor to install two $9.99 battery terminals, expecting both connections to remain secure for more than a month is not an unreasonable standard. The van's transmission later failed. I am not claiming Gustafson caused that failure. I cannot establish that, and I want this review to remain factual. But after already paying for an unresolved diagnosis and then dealing with poorly fitted battery connections, the added financial damage was devastating. There is one final detail prospective customers should know. After my negative Yelp review appeared, the owner contacted us. My impression was that the conversation focused more on what could be done about the review than on beginning with an apology, understanding what had gone wrong, or correcting the work to a professional standard. After three generations of family patronage, that was perhaps the most revealing part. I did not expect special treatment. I expected competent work, fair treatment, and accountability. What I received was: * $631.30 paid. * $419.75 in labor. * $182.50 for a long-crank investigation that the invoice said had "eliminated" the problem. It had not. * $182.50 in labor to install $19.98 in battery terminals. * Both new connections loose less than a month later after the van lost electrical power. * A reasonable request for compensation through needed maintenance refused. Three generations of loyalty ended with me. Get another estimate. Keep every invoice. Get every promise in writing. Inspect the work before leaving--or avoid the expense and aggravation altogether.

I can't say enough good things about Ed and his team at Transmission Specialist…read more My Ford F-150 suddenly went into limp mode and was stuck in third gear, along with a few other issues. Since my truck was out of warranty, I wasn't sure where to turn. I reached out through Yelp and heard back from Ed almost immediately. He had a good idea of what might be wrong and invited me to bring the truck in for an assessment. After inspecting it, he identified damage (caused by rats) to the transmission wiring harness, which had unfortunately caused internal damage. He walked me through everything clearly and provided a very reasonable estimate for a full rebuild. Throughout the entire process, Ed was easy to communicate with, always professional, and genuinely helpful with his advice. What really stood out was how he went above and beyond after the repair. I was told this type damage might be covered under my comprehensive auto insurance. Ed then took the time to work directly with my insurance company--providing detailed documentation and expert insight. Because of his effort and experience, the claim was approved and the repair ended up being fully covered. That level of service is rare these days. I truly appreciate Ed's honesty, professionalism, and follow-through. He did exactly what he said he would do and then some. I wouldn't hesitate to come back or recommend him to anyone in need of transmission work.

Last year, the transmission on my 2008 RAV4 was rebuilt by Transmission Specialists after tow truck…read moredamage, going through insurance. A year later it still hard-shifts going downhill. I brought it back twice and both times I was told everything was fine. During the rebuild, they replaced (and charged additionally me for) replacing the transmission mounts, but a few days after I picked up my car, my motor mounts broke and the engine shifted while I was at a red light. I brought it back immediately and, after a test drive, I was told everything was fine. A separate shop found the entire engine was tilted, and I paid out of pocket several hundred dollars for their diagnosis and installation of replacement motor mounts - mounts I was told should have been replaced along with the others. I brought it back several months later because my car was hard shifting whenever I went downhill and the alternator continued making a high pitched noise. After a test drive on the flat roads around Santa Ana with Ed, was told that it shifted like butter. He advised me to warm up the car before driving, which has not helped at all. I was also promised that my alternator would be exchanged for the price of parts from O'Reilly and that it would be about a $150. I was ultimately charged me $429 for the third party alternator (definitely not a Denso) that makes high pitched whirring sounds when I press the gas pedal. Other minor issues: scratched my window tint and took 6 weeks to complete the work, fixing the alternator last and costing me 3 extra days of rental fees my insurance wouldn't cover. I ended up paying $1345 out of pocket to their shop and insurance covered $4000. Also, I incurred an additional several hundred dollars to the other shop to fix the motor mounts and for the extra days of rental. Ed is really nice and communication was not an issue. Overall, though, I did not have a great experience and I'm reminded of that daily when I drive my car over the hill to get to work, as the car will inevitably jolt as it shifts gears going downhill. It doesn't leave me a good feeling that the transmission repair will last. For this reason, I can't recommend this shop for transmission or general repair work.
