I attended a beginners class today and so did my toddler. Watching the little one interact with the coaches had me confident in making the choice to sign my kid up. They were knowledgeable, patient and the technique they used to teach the little ones was exciting and engaging enough that my hyperactive kiddo told me he wanted to come back. He had fun. The adult into class made me feel like I could do this, they were respectful and explained techniques with detail. It was a very welcoming environment. As a girl amongst the boys I didn't feel awkward but empowered to come back and learn more. I have been to another local BJJ intro class and this place made me feel very comfortable and the class rates not as high as the other though that was not my deciding factor, it definitely takes away some financial stress for a new sport/fitness hobby I want to incorporate into my healthier lifestyle. read more

My buddy has been telling me how awesome Clebers is to train and that I should give ju jitsu a try. Well, I have to say that he was right and tbh Cleber is an awesome professor. Very relatable, makes it really fun and loose but very effective all at the same time. I went two days in a row. The other students are very cool and super helpful too. Definitely didn't give me the "white belt welcome" I've heard other people say... then again maybe I'm a natural ;) My first class I learned a lot of technical stuff. The second class only two other people attended so we got a personal lesson from Cleber. I learned how to base, pass and sweep pretty quickly. I'm about the same height and weight as Cleber so his style is very useful for me. In terms of the space, it's very clean (no bad smells) and the floors are spring loaded and are great at absorbing impact. The whole vibe is family style and they make you feel welcome the moment you walk in. Highly suggest any and everyone stop in. read more

I had a colleague who travelled to Cleber's Huntington Beach academy from upstate New York to train under Cleber, achieving his purple belt and assisting Cleber's kids' class. As a small female semi new to martial arts, I'm careful with gyms since I had a couple of not so good experiences. Master Cleber and Coach Fabiano are the real deal and legit! The students with higher belts are helpful to new students. This is a family oriented gym and everyone encourages you to improve your technique. I love drilling as well as rolling with the women, men, and kids here. No egos with the students. BE AWARE of AUTOMATIC RENEWAL in small print at bottom of contract! I'm a senior citizen widow with limited income raising young grandsons and never had to deal with contracts that do not divulge verbally at the time of signing you must give a 30 day notice in writing to their collection company that they use. Most tell you up front and most tell you at the end of your year that renewal is coming up. My grandsons no longer wanted to go but I made them follow through with their commitment of 1 year. I emailed gym but was told they never got it and must send again. I was paying $300 a month and you got it! They charged my credit card 2 more extra months. I closed card out and lesson learned. I am very disappointed that I was treated like this and wish I had read the negative reviews before signing. I hope this post helps others. read more

Ive been going to this gym for 9 years now and I have nothing but great things to say about the gym. Several classes are available through out the day for kids and adults in both grappling and striking options. To be honest, I'm not really sure what the complaints are about, I have yet to have an issue with payments and the expectations on contracts were very clear when initially signing up. Cleber is a legend in orange county and he has produced several blackbelts that have gone off to open their own schools like A-team, Ace, Leon, Elite Team, Victor Candal Martial Arts and countless others through out the US. Cleber is there for all of the classes through out the day unless there is some kind of special event happening and if there is there are 5 other black belts hand picked and trained by him to teach the classes. There is never a lack of instructors to assist in teaching and every upper belt student there is also very helpful. There are no egos in this gym either so if you are someone that is new to martial arts this is a perfect place to go to. You dont have to worry about getting beat up or bullied at the gym. Its very much a family type feeling, everyone will have your back and push you to get better. The kids program is phenomenal and the track record will speak for itself. Multiple time tournament winners as a team, individual champions at every major tournament and wrestlers that take private classes here have succeeded at the State level in HS and gone on to compete at the college level. I started at the site over a year ago after coming from a super close (friend-wise) gym and it honestly feels like I never left. The instructors at Clebers are some of the most down to earth people you'll ever meet, the owner even workouts and teaches classes on the regular. My favorite class is the women's MMA with Yoko, it's usually Tuesday & Thursday from 6-7pm (sometimes earlier) and Saturday morning at 9am. The class is great for women who are new to MMA or have been in it for a while. I've done MMA for over 5 years but always get an amazing workout and learn something new from these classes. I highly recommend this gym, but everyone is different so come in (I'm pretty sure they do free trail classes) and see if they are a fit for you. :) read more

My experience has been extremely positive. As a 50 year old man who almost got his ass kicked on a golf course by a drunk juggernaut, I decided to seek formal training. I decided take private lessons 5 days a week with Master Cleber starting 27 Jan 2020 to this day. Unlike other instructors Master Cleber is a Veteran professional fighter with a verifiable MMA completion record SPANNING THREE DECADES!!! He was fighting before MMA was wearing gloves. He has his own method of instruction that studies my strengths and weaknesses. I have multiple back injuries from my military service. Master Cleber worked around and customized a training routine to strengthen my injuries. Master Cleber's private instruction includes BJJ grappling, Mui Thai kick boxing, advanced self defense, and MMA cage fighting... After 9 months of training my confidence level is very high compared to where I started. I believe my current skill level is adequate enough to bring future altercations with the average person to a quick conclusion. I am now a blue belt in BJJ and making ready for my promotion evaluation in Maui Thai. I have joined the collective classes with the other students and my learning curve continues to climb. I first started training here because Cleber had sent some instructors to train a bunch of taekwondo black belts in ju jitsu. I have been going ever since. Cleber is a great coach. He has the credentials, really friendly, and always remembers my name. He's very knowledgeable about the finer details of positions and tournament play. None of the higher belts have egos. Please be aware of the required annual membership & automatic renewal. I enjoyed the classes I took, but made the mistake of signing up for a year contract. A couple of months before my contract renewd, I called them to cancel my membership, but they said I had to do it through email. I emailed them right away & didn't get a response. Then I emailed them through their website & no response. It took a third email to their website about canceling my membership. My 7 year old son took lessons here for a year then decided to take a break for a while. I called to cancel my account. Two months later I noticed I was still being billed $100 a month. I called to inquire and was told I never emailed them a cancellation request and even though my son had not stepped foot in their school for 2.5 months they refused to refund my $200.00. They're all smiles and handshakes as long as you're paying them $100+ a month but when it's time to part ways the daggers come out. I lost a lot of respect for you Cleber. There is a sign in your school titled "Makings of a Black Belt" one of the qualities listed is Honesty. I guess this doesn't apply to you does it. read more

This studio is top notch! Cleber is a 4 stripe black belt and really knows how to get the best out of everyone. He is also patient with my kids and really knows how to drive them. I tried it out since I just moved here and Cleber has a reputation of being a great jiu-jitsu competitor. I even heard he now does MMA but his teaching is really poor despite him being very enthusiastic about the sport. On the website it said he teaches every class but when I did my free class he didn't teach it. He also didn't teach the one I watched the day before. One thing that really bothered me is his mat is FILTHY. If that much dust can build up, I can only imagine how much sweat has not been mopped up. That really bothered me. The knees of my white gi pants looked like I knelt in dirt. Oh and don't wear a black gi because you'll stick out like a sore thumb since he doesn't allow them in his school. I was thinking of putting my son in the kids class but I found Cleber to be militant and somewhat rude to the kids. I understand they are there to learn discipline and BJJ but there is no reason he should be THAT aggressive. One kid got injured, cleber looked at the kid and said something about him being fine. I'm pretty sure he isn't a medical doctor and in no way should be giving medical advice..especially to a kid! Overall I thought he was extremely arrogant, financially driven, too aggressive to the kids, and he didn't even teach any of the adult classes. I want to find a jiu-jitsu studio where you feel comradere, not the feeling of you being a customer. My first impression was very poor so I won't be going back. Good thing there are many BJJ schools to choose from down here. I have heard Gazze has a welcoming environment so I will check them next. read more

I struggled between a two and one star rating. I actually created an account on Yelp, just so I could post this review. In the end, I think a 1.5 star rating is fair, but that's not an option on Yelp. Let me start off by saying, that when you go to their website, nowhere will you find a list of their prices. If you call them, they won't tell you their prices over the phone. You'll have to come in and talk to them in person. That should have been the first warning sign. So, let me name a few positives: Most of the students here are friendly and nice. Cleber did a good job in attracting mostly descent people who are looking to train and learn. The coaches who teach here are also great people and very helpful. There is no doubt that if you spend enough time here, you will learn jiu jitsu and get better and I did meet some good people. The jiu-jitsu here is legit. Having said that, that is also true for just about any jiu-jitsu school as well. Now for the bad: Every time you walk through the door, you'll be afraid that you are going to get asked to pay for something else... you will get nickel'ed and dime'd for everything at this school and everything feels like its overtly financially driven. First, you have to sign a one year contract (whether you want to train as an adult, or just sign your kids up). When you go in to sign up, everything is rosy and you are told that its easy to pause your contract for any reason. After a free class, I signed my boy up. I don't blame the school for a one year contract, but beware, asking a 9 year old to decide (based on one class) whether he will stick to a 1 year regimen is asking a lot of the child. You are required to pay the full 12 months, even if you don't attend.. I felt okay, because I was assured that I could 'pause' my contract at anytime. Looking back, I should have gotten that in writing. I had to pay a $100 registration fee for signing my son up. My son had a Gi from his previous school, so I thought I'd use that. After attending the first class, I was told that I had to pay $40 for a patch (literally a piece of cloth) to put on my son's Gi. This was after I had already signed the contract and was locked-in. Nowhere in the contract did it say I was required to do so, but I paid the $40 fee. A month later summer rolled around and it was announced in class that the kids would be required to wear a t-shirt for summer and that not any t-shirt would do, but it had to be a Cleber jiu-jitsu t-shirt... another $40... again, nothing about that in the contract. Then came belt-testing time and I was told that my son was to advance to the next (gray) belt, and I would be required to pay $140 to have him tested (literally a 20-30 minute test, where 10-20 kids get together and the instructor watches them do a few moves). I understand that the belt costs money (probably under $10), and I wouldn't object to a fair fee of maybe $30-40; however, $140 is excessive, especially when I'm paying $140 per month you would think they could include belt testing as part of the cost. Knowing that I was stuck for a year, there was little I could do except to pay for whatever they kept asking me to pay. Furthermore, there is a ton of pressure on you (as a parent) and the kids to compete in their tournaments (at a cost of course of about $50-60). Then came a time when my son started doing poorly in school, so I decided to have to take a break from jiu-jitsu for a month and asked the lady at the front desk to "pause" my account. Come the next month, I noticed I was charged $140 even though my son didn't attend classes for a month. Since it had been a year and I was getting fed up with the nickel and diming, and called in to cancel. I was told that I have to give 30 days notice in writing and that I'd have to pay for an additional month (even though my son hadn't been attending this school for 2 months now). So in the end, my son got 12 months of training at the cost of 15 months. Don't even think you are going to get reimbursed for any months you are not going to attend. Also, cancelling is definitely a big hassle and will require a good bit of luck and maybe even a letter written by a lawyer. Oh and beware, your contract will auto-renew. In the end, I was mostly satisfied with the training my son received. If they would change their business practices, which border on the shady side, they wouldn't be so bad.... buyer beware.. read more

A friend recomended Cleber's to me. Fitness was my origional goal. I did drop 10 to 15 pounds in the first 3 months of training, but more important to mention is all that I've gained.
