I also learned that I could achieve better performance from my hearing aids if I made a small modification to the apparatus' dome. The VA told me this. Two other audiologists told me this. But in my day to day life, I knew something wasn't right. When I met Dr. Beene, it was a completely different experience. I didn't have to explain the VA claims process or educate her about what veterans deal with, she already knew. That alone made a huge difference. More importantly, she didn't just run a standard tone test and send me on my way. The testing itself was quite long and tiring but that's what getting to the bottom of an issue looks like. She understood that there are other types of hearing loss, like processing issues that don't show up on basic audiograms. She actually listened to what I was experiencing and used specialized testing to assess the kind of difficulties I've been living with for years. And she validated that they're real. She even offered to support my VA claim without me asking and genuinely wanted to help me get the support and tools I need, including hearing aids. She immediately diagnosed a severe build-up of fluid in my middle ear as the cause of the rupture and the existing discomfort I was experiencing. She talked me through the options and made me feel very comfortable with starting out with the least intrusive route of meds and waiting. After the two week wait-and-see approach which brought only slight improvement Dr. Schmitt decided to do a myringotomy which she performed expertly. There was minimal pain involved and it immediately brought relief, which got even better over the next 10 days. I didn't know how good his was till I moved to LA, and had to try and find someone as good. Having a real doctor make, fill, verify, and fit your prescription makes a big difference, And it leads to better results with glasses. (You're less likely to experience eye stain, headache, and eye fatigue.) There is a decent selection of glasses, and the office is clean. He got me hooked on "flexon" style frames. Which can handle a beating, and are less likely to break. I can't imagine going back to "normal" glasses. If you haven't tried them. It's really worth trying them.
