This is absolutely some of the best gumbo I've ever had. The flavors were literally eyes-rolling-to-the-back-of-my-head type of good. Unfortunately, Yelp did not eat first with this one (I didn't get to take a picture of it). It came with a grilled cheese and potato salad! All the pricing online is accurate, there is street parking right in front of the restaurant with outdoor seating, and the food came out very quickly. I wouldn't really come to this restaurant to hang out with friends for a dinner since it's kind of small. But it's definitely one of those places that if you're in the area and wanting to pick up some soul food, you should DEFINITELY come here and get some.

After a long day of travel to get to NOLA, I was too pooped to go out and hit the streets tonight for dinner. Ordered DoorDash from HDK on the cred of the many positive Yelp reviews and it didn't disappoint. Tried two dishes, as I couldn't settle on one. The fried fish and shrimp were outstanding! Loved the dipping sauce and the seafood was cooked perfectly. The fish fillet was about an inch thick and so moist and flaky. Yum! Not sure I loved the fries with the crawdat sauce - they were a little salty. This ff dish kinda gives poutine vibes with the gravy. The Superdome was also tasty. I liked the fried fish better than the blackened, but the mashed potatoes and corn and sauce draped over the fish was rich and delicious. This fish was much thinner and a little chewy. I'd love a hybrid of Superdome using the thicker fried fish. Bread pudding was my dessert, warm and dripping in caramel/brown sugar sauce. I had to restrain myself from eating the whole thing! This was a perfect way to start my visit to the Big Easy.

We dined at quite a few restaurants during our stay in New Orleans; however, this hidden gem was hands-down the BEST (we even recommended it to our Uber driver!). The restaurant is tiny, but don't let that fool you: the portions were plentiful, and the taste was unlike anything I've experienced before! Quick and friendly service, southern hospitality. It's definitely on our list of places to visit when we return!

Absolutely insane food. Definitely suggest getting a little bit of everything and sharing if possible. Portions were extremely generous, especially considering the level of the food. The gumbo is probably some of the best I've had right after my maw maw's. I got it as a side, because I had to have it, and easily could have made it two meals. If you had to pick one dish to try, the Bourbon Street Love was phenomenal. The employees were so sweet and helpful. There was a nice breeze out and some shaded tables so we decided to enjoy everything outside. In such a foodie city, Heard Dat Kitchen was a real highlight of the trip. Just wow!

There's a lot of good food in New Orleans but there's only one heard dat kitchen. I found this spot on accident 5 years ago and it's been blessing me and my homegirls ever since! It's a little hole in the wall spot that probably can't hold more than 6 people inside so you know the food is going to be bussin! It's probably best you take it home anyway so you can make all the noises that you need to make comfortably without being judged lol You have to try them for yourself! When I tell yall I came here two days in a row because I was having withdrawals, I really mean that. I highly recommend the seafood extravaganza! I promise you will not be disappointed and If you are let me know so I can look you in your face and call you a liar. So you land in New Orleans, stand in the heat waiting for an Uber at the airport, and finally make it to your hotel room after checking in at the front desk. You sink onto the couch in your room. Your stomach growls. But it is too late for breakfast and past lunch, almost dinner time. But you want to eat, now. What do you do? You hop on Uber Eats, scroll and find "Heard Dat Kitchen", order a few items, and it ends up being one of the best meals you've had in New Orleans and maybe one of the best meals you've ever had in your life. Everything I ordered on Uber Eats here (catfish over red beans and rice with cornbread and extra side of cornbread with Crawdat sauce) was absolutely delicious, perfectly seasoned, delivered quickly, and piping hot, so you know it was fresh. Don't even question it, add it to your list of restaurants to try out.

The food was very mid. Social media definitely overhyped this place. Seafood Extravaganza- apparently basa fish which reminded me of TILAPI ... which isn't identified on the menu and shrimp were not deveined I saw the veins with my own eyes. This service was ehhh, not the best. The young lady got the register was a bit impatient, but that's OK. This food is delicious beyond measure. Can't even describe how scrumptious and flavorful everything was. I got the seafood extravaganza (blackened) and the most delicious sweet tea I've had lately. My friend got Bourbon Street Love and potato salad. Practically licked our plates clean. Everyone who worked there was so kind, especially Essence!! Upon arrival we weren't sure if this was the correct place because it looked so small! But it indeed was! There's really only outdoor seating and a few inside. We came as soon as it opened and it did take awhile for food to come out but the girl the took our order gave us a heads up! So do not come hangry because it does take awhile for the food to come out but just know ITS WORTH THE WAIT! We got the bourbon street lovers - chicken over Mac and cheese. It was delicious. Chicken is nice and juicy but is still crispy. Mac and cheese is full of flavor. My personal favorite was the superdome. It's blacken fish topped with mash potatoes, crispy onion rings in a lobster sauce. YUMMMM. At first I thought it being fish was going to be sus but I'm really glad I tried it! This was one of my favorite things we had out here. This place is a must! You will not regret it! read more

This may be a tiny little shack of a place, but it's got DAMN GOOD FOOD. I got the seafood extravaganza and all I can say is wow. The fish and shrimp were perfectly crispy and absolutely delicious. The crawdat fries that came with were also delicious. Pro tip, get the candied bacon and sprinkle it onto the fries, *chefs kiss*. Not to mention the angel sauce that comes with the meal. The sauce was so good I asked for 2 extra. Will 100% come back if ever in town again. read more

Stay away from this place. They take your money and then "forget" to give you half your order. Then they will argue with you and say they "can't do anything about it". They are only interested in screwing you out of your money and giving you poorly made food. read more

Now, the blackened chicken and fish are blackened well, but it doesn't taste like anything.. same with the fries. This place has AMAZING FOOD. We tried the Bourbon street, the Super dome, corn bread, yellow rice, potato salad, gumbo, regular tea, and the other tea you can't say at church. ALL OF IT WAS PHENOMENAL I'm just sad we didn't have time, or room in the belly, to try more things... We flew home to California that day in FOOD COMAS dreaming about that chicken... We ordered ahead on the phone and my cell call kept dropping ...Tia was so sweet on the phone and managed to get our order exactly right even with the horrible phone service I had. read more

I found this restaurant after a quick Google search for restaurants near my downtown New Orleans hotel. That was on a Monday, and I didn't actually make it there until Thursday night. I cannot stress enough how thankful I was when my plans changed up and I remembered researching this spot. After waking up from a late nap, I put in an order over the phone about 40 minutes from closing. I went to pickup my order about 20 minutes later and everything was ready, but I decided that I needed to try the bread pudding, so that extended my wait a bit. The restaurant is pretty small, and most of the seating is outside. (I didn't plan to stay, so this didn't effect me much.) Now on to the food..... My God! EVERYTHING was delicious. I had the blackened fish with shrimp and a side of crawdat fries, the lobster mashed potatoes and bread pudding. Everything was seasoned well, full of flavor and the portions were phenomenal. I spent about $45 or so, and I would've been just fine spending more if need be. I'm normally the kind of person that eats dessert before dinner, but I had a feeling I should save the bread pudding for last. Maaaaannnnnn, I have never in my life had bread pudding that damn good. I mean love and care had to be two of the main ingredients. The next time I'm in town I will definitely find my way back to this lovely black owned business. They are an absolute gem in the city of New Orleans and you have to try their delicious eats, you will not be disappointed. You're welcome in advance. read more

Staff was extremely nice and welcoming! Engaging and knowledgeable about their food and cuisine! I ask a lot of questions! This is a carry out establishment! You may sit outside at the tables provided or there is a small bar area where you place your order. Okay so let's go! The gumbo combo was interesting as it comes with grill cheese. The grill cheese was prepared to perfection. The file gumbo was ....exceptional! Roux is dark and seasoned just right! I prefer a thicker gumbo but this was worth the trip and the wait! Again...one of the best gumbos I have had and reviewed in Nawlins! This family ran and operated restaurant peaked my interest even more so I ordered the fried chicken combo which comes with Mac and cheese and I chose double potato salad because I am a tater salad fanatic! Did I say the gumbo was fiya?!! The chicken plate was a breast or thigh fried! I was expecting actual chicken pieces...reading is fundamental! The chicken was seasoned very well and was very good! The potato salad was yellow meaning it was a mustard base salad and you could taste it. It was very good and went well with the chicken. Again, worth the trip back! Now, the Mac and cheese is a very hard pass! I'm going to say whoever prepared the Mac and cheese on the day of my visit was off. The noodles and cheese sauce simply had no taste. No salt, onion powder or nothing! If this is your normal recipe....hear me...change it! Folks are serious about their Mac and cheese. I am not them and could go either way but I would truly consider changing this recipe. Outside of that, they earned a 4...with the right Mac...this could easily be a 5! Worth the trip to go off the beaten path to find this place. Amazingly seasoned fish, grits, everything was so good! I heard about it on a documentary I watched about black-owned restaurants and executive chefs in New Orleans and I knew I had to try it. You'd be surprised to learn there are not that many. Found this spot on ig thru my New Orleans digging. Service A-1. Idk how many people they got in the back working but the lady who took the orders and the owner who ended up coming outside. Very friendly and engaging. It was kinda cold. But not terrible. We ate outside because it's more of a pickup and go spot but it's seating available. I think our bill was $45 or something. Fish was the best fried fish we had in our entire trip to New Orleans. Not gonna lie this may have been the best fish I had in my life. Wasn't too breaded but just enough and cooked just right. Crawfish Etouffee under it wasn't my favorite. I'm not from down here so this is all a first to me but I had some that had a different taste that was a lil more flavorful that I preferred. Potato Salad was smackin but I needed like a lil spoon and a half more added on there. Kinda ligh but it was good. Bread regular. Now my girlfriend just had to try something she ain't know about. Let me get the skeesh sauce on everything. Ain't ask what it was or nothing. Ended up being pepper jam jelly I think. Hot asl it's good if you mix it with the ranch. It cools it down. The hole in the wall spots ALWAYS have the best food. There is no bathroom and only standing inside or sitting outside on the benches. But we didn't go for ambiance, we went for the food and the blackened fish on the mashed potatoes was one of the best things I've tasted. I also enjoyed my chicken and Mac. Parking is on the street on the side of the restaurant. It's very limited. There's only picnic tables outside and a small, narrow counter inside. The entrance isn't clearly marked but you go through the old doors in my pic. The ladies inside were so nice and answered any questions we had. We ordered the red beans plate and the bourbon plate. The fried fish wasn't fishy which was a good thing. The red beans and rice were delicious. They have a different take on potato salad . Theirs is more mustardy and even though it wasn't something we loved, someone who likes that style would likely love it. The chicken was very good. It was a boneless thigh cooked very well. I didn't like the sauce on the macaroni so next time I'd skip it or ask for it without the sauce. It was too fishy for my taste but that's coming from someone who does not like anything fishy. One of our friends found this hole-in-the -wall place, and honestly when we arrived, we weren't sure if we wanted to go in , except that the yelp reviews promised good food. It's in a dark. sketchy neighborhood, and only outdoor seating available. thankfully it was a beautiful night. Of all the places we visited to eat during our 4-day NOLA trip, and yes there were many, this place had the BEST food!!!! I ordered the Bourbon St Love. I didn't look at the online menu and just asked a super nice lady what their best item was, and this is what she recommended. Another friend ordered a fish dish, which she said was super good too. Ok, back to the Bourbon St Love. So much love was put into this!!! Crispy (but not greasy) tasting hot-made-to-order fried chicken on top of mac n cheese, ok, it gets better tho. The food was absolutely excellent! Family owned restaurant. We had the opportunity to meet the chef/owner as well as his children, everyone was super friendly. I had the Mardi Gras Mambo and my husband had the Bourbon Street Love. Mac and Cheese base was out of this world. The sweet tea is also a must get. Keep doing what you're doing Chef Jeff!!!! I found this place thru TikTok with the help of yelp and it's 5 star reviews. When we pulled up we honestly thought about going to a different place bc of the sketchy location but TRUST THE PROCESS. We ordered the 2 most popular dishes- Superdome and the Bourbon Street. 10/10 MY TASTE BUDS WERE BURSTING WITH FLAVOR. The chicken was crispy but so tender, falling apart. It took a a good minute to get our food, bc it's cooked to order. We ended up taking it back to the hotel..The lady that took our order was very nice and helpful- the only thing I wasn't fired up about was the Iced Tea. Read about on Yelp and as always on the lookout for good southern food made the time to stop by. I suggest you do the same. Food was excellent, had the seafood extravaganza, blackened, and bread pudding for dessert. Plenty of food, meal included fries, and between that and dessert probably could have been enough for 2. Person taking orders was friendly and in a good mood. Be aware that this is a take out joint. Inside has no seating while outside has picnic tables. I wouldn't recommend walking to the restaurant unless you are 6'5"+ and 250+ lbs. The surrounding area is not the best and is more for drive up to door, get food and get right back in the car once you have your meal. read more

Every cliche traveling foodie or tourist looking for a "hole in the wall" spot with "authentic local cuisine" should look no more - this is it! I can not recommend this place enough! Whenever I am in town I stop by here. When I have friends ask what they should do when they visit New Orleans, this is on the top of the list. Everything is amazing but I highly recommend "The Bourbon Street Love." Clear out a few hours afterwards though because you're going to be in a food coma. Essence is awesome explaining the food. Patient and very personable. The best authentic local food we had. The reb beans and rice was excellent. On my final search for a ome real authentic Cajun food before I left New Orleans, stopped at this place to eat. This location has a couple of benches outside but it really is a takeout spot. The food was actually really good. Just not understanding the whole corn concept but OK I was still looking for food a little more of the spicy side which I did not get but it was flavorful, just wish it came with a baguette to be able to sop up some of the extra sauce. Stay the hell away from corporate restaurants in NOLA. Get out in the neighborhood and go to Heard Dat. You can taste the love in Jeff's food. He takes the time to finish the roux. The spices are right on. I normally have the super dome but had the crawfish Etouffe this time. It was incredible. Save room for the bread pudding. The sauce is so sweet and tasty. As soon as they arrived, I picked one up and immediately thought, "Wow, this is incredibly light." Anyone who eats crabs regularly knows that's usually a bad sign. When I opened it, it was completely hollow inside--nothing but an empty shell. A crab that is hollow like that was dead before it was cooked. I never took a single bite. I showed it to our server, Remy B., who apologized and said she would let the manager know. She took the plate away, so I assumed the issue was being handled. When the bill arrived, I was still charged for the crabs. I asked to speak with a manager and explained exactly what happened. She confirmed that I had notified the server and that the plate had been taken away. Then she told me that it didn't matter because their policy is to not give refunds or remove food from a check. Let that sink in: they acknowledged that I didn't eat the food, acknowledged that the server removed it, and still charged me for it. A restaurant standing behind its food is the bare minimum. Charging customers for food that was clearly unacceptable and never eaten is ridiculous. The lack of concern from management was even more disappointing than the crab itself. The only reason this review isn't 1 star is because the young man at the host stand was friendly, professional, and the one bright spot of the entire experience.

The service was outstanding as well. They started me off with a Brandy Milk Punch, which tasted kind of like an elevated eggnog. It paired with the Baked Apple. I'm not usually a big fan of apples in terms of texture, but they did it well and I liked how they stuffed the core with oatmeal. It's a nice half slice of baked apple in a tasty, brown sugar glaze. I went with the Seafood Gumbo because I didn't have the heart to eat a snapping turtle (I'm assuming), but people did say good things about it. It came with a Bloody Bull cocktail, a spin on a Bloody Mary. It wasn't my cup of tea, but I get the flavor profile and the spice pairs well with the gumbo. The soup really did help really kick things off and set the tone for the rest of the meal. I highly enjoyed their Egg Hussarde, which was invented here. I've had a lot of bennies, but this one is fantastic and paired well with the champagne. I also ordered my egg soft and it was poached perfectly! This is definitely an elevated version of Egg Benedict and I hope more places around the world adopts it! The Petit Filet Mignon had a cute presentation with their Potato Rosti and came sliced over a bed of garlic spinach and garlic demiglaze. Fantastic! The red wine 'Cuvee Vincent' Cotes du Rhone 2023 was very smooth, definitely was no $8 retail California table wine. If a dish could be a love letter, this was it. And the World Famous Bananas Foster? Magic! Love the presentation, love the story, and love the taste. You get a whole banana so the portion is good and the coffee helped cut through the sweetness. Vanilla ice cream gave it a nice, clean taste. No danger of a tourist trap here: all in all, Brennan's is absolutely worth the trip!

While you're here, I'd say that the cafe au lait is also worth trying. I noticed that the lines tend to be longer in the morning but there was little to no wait at night time. I was a little confused when I first walked up, as there isn't a place to order. You simply sit at an empty table and a server comes to take your order. The beignets were warm, crispy, and covered in powdered sugar. It's hard to explain what they even tasted like because they were just that incredible. I ended up getting them again the next day--I genuinely want to make another trip out here just to have them again. Be aware that it's in a heavily tourist-filled area, but besides that, I loved this spot and will definitely be back the next time I'm in New Orleans!

Overall, the food is fantastic, but be prepared for chaotic crowds and a messy ordering system during peak hours.

This is not your typical five star Resturant and why do I say Five Star because of the meals that are delivered in to go plates. We had several things, Dat Super Dome was delicious ( that is what my son ordered, but I had to taste it). The Blackened Fish was perfect and to pair it with Lobster potatoes was brilliant, I'm not sure what type of sauce it was sitting in but it worked well with the dish. I had stuff Shrimp and I also ordered Stew chicken. The stuff shrimp was perfect, once you took a bite you had to continue to eat and it to was in a delicious sauce and I'm thinking it was some sort of crawfish sauce. I didn't eat the Stew as I was to full but my mother said that it was delicious and for $6 it was well worth it. My daughter had the wings and my son had the BBQ. It all was very delicious. If you are not from New Orleans do not let the location deter you from trying the food. I recently visited Heard Dat Kitchen and was thoroughly impressed, despite a few minor considerations. The space itself is cozy, with a somewhat small seating area, which definitely speaks to its popularity. We arrived and were told the wait would be around 30 minutes. The staff was fantastic, especially the cashier who had genuinely great energy and made the ordering process a pleasure. Once our food arrived, it was well worth the wait. The flavors were incredible--every element on the plate complemented each other perfectly, creating a truly memorable meal. My only minor critique would be about the Mardi Gras Mambo. The dish itself was fantastic, but I do wish the potato salad had been placed on the side. However, this is a small note on an otherwise great experience. If you want authentic soul food look no farther that Heard Dat Kitchen. 3 years ago you wouldn't find anyone going to this area of town because this was one of the most dangerous areas of New Orleans but now things have drastically changed. The food is delicious. I had the Bourbon Street and it was the best fried chicken I have ever eaten, and I love fried chicken. Jeff, the chef and his family are an incredible asset to this neighborhood. Tia, one of the daughters, could be the sweetest servers I have had in any restaurant. She made us feel special and when she brought our food I couldn't believe my mouth. If you want something very authentic, delicious at the same time help out real entrepreneurs, give this place a try. You won't regret it. read more

I have reviewed Heard Dat before about a year ago, have been maybe 6 times and went back again today. Took a friend who had never been before, I like introducing people to Heard Dat. I'm no professional food critic, but this place is nothing less than amazing. When you pair great food with great people (Tia), you just can't say enough. Just couldn't get enough of the Skeesh shrimp on greens. Surf & turf were great, a blackened steak cooked to a perfect medium rare, friend had the Bourbon Street Love, and basically licked the plate clean. I called the restaurant to see if I needed a reservation and asked other questions I saw from their website. The person who answered the phone sounded annoying and start to call me 'Mam' with that kind of tone. I asked to talk to the manager, she had the same unwelcoming voice and tone with her staff. I told her I'll find another restaurant. This is very disappointed on customer service from a good restaurant according to yelp review. Awesome Awesome The Fried Chicken with the bake mac and cheese in a crawfish Cream sauce OMG delicious. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in New Orleans! Every time I eat here it is always so good. Definitely a hidden gem. I recommend getting the Bourbon St. or the Super Dome.
