CASH ONLY. As soon as they set the food down, I knew it was going to be a great meal based on the quality of the food and how great it looked. Heart's is a small diner located just west of Van Nuys in the heart of the valley. I would say it's the classic retro diner and has that classic LA look on the inside. They have a lot of different seating options, both booth and counter and a giant bustling kitchen. There is a parking lot with free parking attached with plenty of spaces. Also, our server was very polite and all the food items came out very quickly. They also did a great job with the drink refills and checking in on us often. They have a fairly large menu filled with all sorts of diner classics. Based on a lot of other reviews, I wanted to try their Country Fried Steak, and I am very happy that I did so. The white gravy on top was truly delicious and obviously homemade, the steak itself was cooked perfectly, and not too crispy, and their homemade butter really was delicious and added to the flavors. I honestly enjoyed every bite and was impressed at the cost and quality. It is important to note that it is cash only but they do accept Zelle and also have a ATM inside. The valley is full of amazing diners and I would consider Heart's to be one of them. It's truly a great breakfast option and I would recommend to anyone. I went in for the first time last week and while we walked in were approached by a male and we asked if we can have a table. He said no that the tables are only for four people and more. So we had no choice but to sit at the little bar/countertop area he asked us right away what we wanted to drink and we said if he can give us a few minutes after about 15 minutes another couple came in and they got sat in a table when there was room in the countertop. The same male never came back to take our order. After 15 minutes waiting we walked out horrible customer service. On a weekday mid-morning there were still tables available but I was surprised at how many people were there. And more came while we ate. At one point only counter seating was available. The lady who took care of the front seemed to have it all under control, as did the gentleman cooking. Food was coming out of the kitchen fast. COVID precautions were in place. Didn't check vaccination record but requires masks except when eating. Even after coffee was delivered, the lady didn't want to approach the table unless we put on our masks. "Vaccination is to protect you; masks are to protect me", she said. Both are important and I really appreciate their commitment and enforcement. My bride had her routine breakfast, a vegetarian omelette. I had the country-fried steak (white gravy) with over-easy eggs. I didn't notice the time, but I think they food was delivered to our table within 15 minutes and it looked great! For the most part, it tasted great too. The hash brown potatoes were perfect. The omelette and over-easy eggs were perfect. The steak was really good but gravy had a bit of a weird pasty flour taste. Not so great. Served with the toast was an individual tub of jelly and a blob of margarine. Butter would have been both preferred and eaten. The bus tub on the counter... convenient but yuckky looking. The coffee and iced tea... we didn't enjoy as much as other reviewers seemed to enjoy them. The prices are famously low. This place is very much a bargain. I'd probably be willing to pay a bit more as a contribution toward the maintenance fund, however. read more
