Food is really good here. My brother lives in LA and I introduced him to delicious Mariscos Hectors. Now everytime he comes to visit me we make sure to eat at Hectors. Their culichi sauce is the bomb....and their Hectors taco is super delish!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Any restaurant with that has the word "Mariscos" in its name, is a must try in my book. So Saturday night, we came here for dinner and cold beers. Location: Located in a nice plaza. Unlike the plazas on the other corners, this one wasn't as busy. Lots of parking. Restaurant Decor: Loved the way the restaurant looked on the outside. Also liked that it seemed a little trendy, but not overdone. We were happy to see the cerveza signs on the front, because we realllly wanted a cold beer. Nice salt water fish tank up front. Menu: For as nice as this restaurant appears, the way the menu is arranged is quite subpar. Half of the menu doesn't have any sort of description next to the food item. The menu would only say "Popeye fillet" and that's it. Well what does that mean?? What's in it, what kind of fish is it? The restaurant needs a lot of help on this. Prices: A little steep for me. I think they wanted $14 for 5 oysters Rockefeller. That's absurd. Several other items were well over $16 and the photos didn't even look appealing, and it wasn't for any high quality seafood. Taste: I ordered an octopus cocktail for us to share. My fiance ordered a marlin burrito, and I ordered a marlin tostada and a shrimp ceviche tostada. We both had a bowl of the fish soup. The fish soup is to die for, and the tostadas were good. He liked his burrito. We only wished that we had known that the marlin was smoked, and not grilled. Again, that is a deficiency in the menu. Service: Let me preface this by saying that the two girls that helped us were FABULOUS. But the service here started off horribly. The three of us walk in, no one was at the hostess table. Look around, a couple workers look at us, but no one comes over. A minute later, a guy with a pony tail (who I later learn is the manager), comes walking over, but never makes eye contact with me until he officially walks behind the hostess table. Then he says he's going to clean one of the booths and we'll be seated in just a minute. A couple walks in, and they were seated within seconds. So we are waiting and waiting. 10 minutes pass, and we are still waiting for our booth to be cleaned. I look in and notice that there aren't any booths available. Then I see the manager sitting at a booth eating and drinking with some friends!! WTF?!?! A waitress comes over to ask me if I needed help, and I explained that I was waiting for a booth, because that's what the manager told me to do. She goes and talks to the manager who is drinking a beer. He must've told her that he gave the table away to the previous couple, as she comes back and apologizes and says that they made a mistake. She offers us a regular table. By this time, i'm pissed because we've been waiting, and I'm pissed because the manager is a lazy, drunk idiot who makes his staff do his dirty work. The waitress got my reaction, and she goes back to the manager with my reaction. He and his friends quickly get up and start cleaning the table. They relocate their little party to a regular table. The waitress was very helpful, and sweet, and apologetic, even though it wasn't her, it was completely the manager's fault. To top it off, we ordered 2 beers, and the manager grabs them from the bar, and takes it to another table, whom we saw tell him that they didn't order any beer. The watiress goesto that table and grabs the beers from him and again apologized for his lack of competence. **The owners of this place should fire whoever they have "managing" this restaurant. I hope it's not a family member. They have a great concept, and the food was good. However, from what I saw, the manager will suck this place dry and run it into the ground. read more

Stopped here after seeing the sign - didn't check it out on Yelp ahead of time. Our visit was during lunchtime and place was about half full. We struggled a bit with the menu - as other reviewers have indicated there is no explanation as to what things are. Service was a bit 'sketchy' - our server seemed to be a little on the slow side. The other server seemed more upbeat and even greeted some of the other customers by name and knew their orders. With all that being said we had some of the BEST fish tacos we've ever eaten. They were perfectly prepared with just the right amount of toppings. The shrimp tacos were good but paled in comparison to the fish ones. We also found the salsa to be excellent - not 'gringoed' down like some Mexican restaurants are. Would we go again?? Yes, we'd ask for the other server if she was there and would ask her to explain the menu to us - but, we'd probably have at least one order of the fish tacos!! read more

Michiladas are on point... Shrimp cocktail is great as well. Price is on par with any good seafood spot.

Let's start off with the good: - the beer - the after dinner mints Now on to the main course, shall we? Checked out Hector's, thinking it was going to be like it was back in the day. Horror ensued. We started off a dozen oysters. These oysters were on the... small side. Wait, small is too big of a word. Miniscule? Yeah, miniscule. These were weren't oysters, or the offspring of oysters. They were more like fetal oysters. Did I mention I paid around $20 for these things? The girlfriend ordered octopus in garlic sauce (pulpo al mojo de ajo). Instead, the cook brought out his specialty: garlic soup topped off with pencil erasers. Totally inedible. I ordered the turtle soup. I'm not too sure it was turtle. It smelled like, looked like, and tasted like beef soup. Not a happy camper here. The tortillas tasted fresh out of the microwave. Yeah, the microwave. Very authentic, right? Save yourself some money. In fact, a lot of money. If you want crappy "mexican food" hit up a Rubio's. read more

Their salsa is spicy! I really appreciate that.. haha. The customer service was great, everyone is friendly here and the tacos were delicious. My family usually customizes a lot in our orders and they always manage to get everything right. What a great place to come for mariscos! read more

Had to drive 2 hours to Chula Vista for a golf tourney and afterwards looked on yelp for a place to eat. This came up as the best place to go near us. I read some reviews and found alot of different things that ive never had, so we where on our way. Before I was all the way thru the door the guy was having us on our way to the table. Not only was the food great but the service was just as good. I ordered a fish taco and a turtle taco but they where out of turtle so i ended up getting a stingray taco. I ate the fish taco first and was great, both of these tacos come loaded with meat. They where so big you really couldnt hold them without stuff falling out all over the place. The stingray had a unique flavor, it was pretty good to. I would definitly go back and order both and other things off the menu. I would also drive out of my way to come here the next time im in San Diego area. My dad got a marlin taco and a carne asada taco. He said the carne asado taco was great but didnt care for the marlin because all you could taste was the burnt tortilla. Chips and salsa was great. Fish tacos are great. Breakfast is just average. On another visit I had a shrimp cocktail, also just ok. The ceviche, mixed feelings, one time it was awesome and the following time it was not. Consistently good tacos. I'm not super impressed with the service, atmosphere, or quality, but when we come for Taco Tuesday, we always get good tacos for $1 each. I've only eaten here once off the regular menu, and it was good, but not great and the prices are average. read more

The salmon ceviche is amazing!! We've ordered quite a few things here and some have been just all right. I did have the paella and it was probably one of the worst I've ever had. The shells of the clams were dirty and looked disgusting. I would eat my rice and it would be crunchy only to see I was crunching on a bunch of broken shells. I will never order this again!! The 7 sea soup is delicious and the drinks are good. But the service is extremely slow and forgetful. I asked for a refill on chips and a refill on water several times, but it took about 20 minutes for it to actually happen. (Minus the chips I never received). The food quality is great, which is the only reason they're receiving an average rating. read more

Love the huge clean fish tank when you walk in! Booths are nice and comfortable, food is my favorite! Waiters there are persistent and friendly which is always a plus when you're eating out. The augachile is my favorite, fresh and flavorful. read more

I love this place because we moved to the area and it was close by we gave it a try and the food is delicious. I feel like they can work on their service being consistent. So after a long boycott over their bad service and rude waiter. I came back to Hectors to give it another shot (and its conveniently close to home). I am glad to say I saw new staff and they are back on track as far as I am concerned. The wait staff was quick attentive and accurate. Came here on a Saturday for lunch with my honey, probably around 1pm and it was very empty. I would recommend going around the time we went if not earlier because as soon as we were leaving it was getting pretty busy. Server took a little long to help us. We got the hector's ceviche to share, he got a shrimp and octopus cocktail, and I got the two fish tacos with rice and beans. Everything was delicious, the perfect amount of spicy. We love to come here for tacos and especially on Tuesdays! They have tasty tacos and a large variety. Their chips are great and their margaritas are delicious also. They have decent service.. Which means it's a hit or miss depending on the server but otherwise it is a great place to have some delicious fish tacos! read more

We like this place a lot. Always packed, but a reasonable wait if needed. We have liked everything we have ordered. Margaritas are good too. Family oriented. The restaurant is kind of older, so the atmosphere is not what some might like....if u don't care about looks and just like to eat this is a good place to try out. read more

A little torn on how to review. My wife would give it a 1-star, I'm going with a three. Split the difference. Great location, at the end of a nice shopping center. The ambiance is great, nice place with a great fish tank upon entry. Not a fancy place, but a decent, average Mexican restaurant. Service was very friendly. It's great that the menu has a lot of fish options. I chose a two-taco combo, one with shrimp and one with shrimp and cheese. Both were really good, though kind of small. The rice and beans were average. My wife went with a carne asada taco, with avocado. Best part of it? The avocado. She was very disappointed. Carne asada was burnt and she seemed to be spitting out all of the fat that was supposed to be meat. Not good at all. Hopefully the other branches of this chain are better.. read more

Have been coming to this location for many years and I enjoy their customer service and great food. I have tried many of their plates and they are delicious. We were here on a Sunday evening as my parents-in-law from out of state were looking forward to eat fresh grilled fish. We wanted to relax and enjoy our meal so we opted to eat outside in their patio which was not packed and noisy compared to the inside dining area. It took them 18 mins to seat us. When we were finally seated, the table was prepared for 3 when we clearly stated we needed a table for 4. The table was also unstable with one leg being shorter than the rest. These should have been signs that the service would not be great, but oh well we were already there. Next, we were handed menu booklets where the items listed were confusing. Don't get me wrong, it was not in Spanish. It was just oversimplified that you would end up asking too many questions to the snotty server. For instance, "combination plate $xx" or "Garlic sauce fish fillet $xx". It does not tell you what was actually on the plate! Combination of what? What type of fish or seafood? Would there be rice/ tortilla or some sort? Would it be served with a soup? To add more, it took them 40 mins to serve our food. It was not even good. The fish unfortunately was not fresh and it seemed like it was frozen. You are better off eating at a fastfood like Rubios where fish is fresh and service faster. Finally, when we were all finished dining, we waited for our bill. Then we waited. Chit chatted some more and waited further. After about an hour or so, we couldn't wait anymore and we realized the server had forgotten about us. My father-in-law had to get up and pay the bill upfront. End of story. Nothing really sparkles about this restaurant other than the glittery fishes in the aquarium by the entrance. Thank goodness for those vivacious fishes, this restaurant deserves a bonafide 1 star rating. read more

We wanted to take our 97 year old aunt for Easter brunch and called to make reservations and to make sure they would be serving champagne. When we arrived at 11:15 AM, the restaurant was mostly empty. We ordered three Mimosas and our aunt noticed that Menudo is served on Saturday and Sunday. The waiter came back and we asked about the Menudo and he told us there was none. We waited more time for our Mimosas and finally walked over to ask him about the delay. He had just picked up glasses from another table and told me the glasses needed to be washed before they could serve us. We waited a few more minutes and the waiter came to tell us they had no champagne. We left. Horrible service, no management, and we'll never go back. read more

I just ordered some fish tacos to go. I asked for two of them to have the toppings on the side. Instead, I got all 7 of my tacos plain, with hardly any toppings on the side. They literally gave us 4 thin slices of avocado for our 7 tacos. They also forgot the cream that they usually put on their tacos. This is the 3rd time they've messed up my pick up order. First time tries...SAD! SERVICE: 1 star. The poor server was so overwhelmed since there were only 2 of them. Of course we understand this changes from time to time. LOCATION: could have deserved more stars but it will be pulled down by everything else. LOL. FOOD: Can I give negative stars? We ordered 6 different tacos on the menu. Hector's was supposed to be their specialty, but the cook had burned the tortilla. The Carne asada was bland and underseasoned. The crab, shrimp and squid tacos were smothered with cheese, sauce and overcooked. We were not able to finish any taco, that was how bad it was. It's amazing how the cook thought they were good enough to be served. PRICE: For what we had, my husband who is a food snob, would gladly pay the price for Taco Bell and Del Taco. Food is good a little on the pricey side for the portions. I've had the Agua chile, tostadas de ceviche, cocteles, tacos de pescado, and chilaquiles. Not all at one time! Lol But they are always soooo crowded and not enough servers. However there is one server I can't recall her name (perhaps African American, blonde long "dread-like" hair), she's really nice and quick. read more
