Heffy's is one of those places that I've passed my countless times in my life but never been into. I have been now of course, but I said that to point out how well they fit into that "hidden gem" category. This place exemplifies the local joint genre of eateries. It's a welcoming environment with a down home feel and Chicagoland vibe. I like the combos they have. It's convenient when places make so you don't have to order everything separately and make extra fuss outta your lunch rush.The 2 dog combo is the best example of this. I think the hotdog fairly good. It's a solid choice but nothing overly spectacular. I enjoyed it for what it is though. Fries were decent, though varying in sizes in the tray. No frills location in a strip center. The staff was friendly and it was clean for a "hole in the wall" type place. There are quite a few menu options. Since Robin left not only are prices ludicrous and punitive, but food is really bad. Got usual 2 hot dogs & fries. Hot dog tiny, big around as small finger, wrinkled up & taste was like spoiled. The food is fresh, NOT greasy, and served with nothing but warm welcomes and smiles! I called in my order on my way home from running errands. It's been one of those places I do pass a thousand times and never thought about stopping to try. I wanted cheese fries and a hot dog! It was one of those days that if I didn't give in to my cravings, I'd end up thinking about it for hours. I showed up and there were a few people in line before me. Socially distanced waiting. The people working there are safely taking on the health precautions. The owner was warm and welcoming to everyone, chatting up the customers while we waited, and thanked everyone with a genuine thanks! The food was YUM! When I asked why the 3% increase, I was told their cost of doing business was increasing, so they are compensating by charging this fee. Came home to eat and the bun was partially burnt, really dry, the burger was overcooked, with no flavor. The "cajun curly fries" had no flavor either and it was just bland. There is small fine print under the sign that I didn't see that says you have to buy a side in order to get the deal. Seems a little scammy. Awesome foods! The staff is friendly and they have a crazy wide selection of food to eat. All at really reasonable prices. WE LOVE HEFFY'S!!!!!!!!!!! I have no idea what the place was like before but it's perfect just the way it is. We recently moved back to Chicago from San Diego and we seriously missed the "neighborhood hot dog joint" with all our midwestern hearts. I did some Yelping (of course) and saw that Heffy's was open and right down the street from our new digs. We walked in and were greeted by the owner, who is one of the coolest ladies you'd ever meet. She was so warm, friendly, and funny! And the guys behind the counter are awesome, too. We ordered the gyros, a couple hot dogs, and some cajun cheese fries. The gyros is my absolute favorite: they somehow know how to make the edges crispy while keeping it the perfect amount of greasy and chewy.
