Finally visited all the Bakeshop locations! As with the other locations this business is just so good! I enjoy the McLovin breakfast sandwiches and wash it down with a New Orleans Style coffee. Surprising customer service and a surprisingly bad cake. My daughter wanted a special cake for her 18th birthday. She had her heart set on an almond cake, like the one Whole Foods used to make. I reached out to several local bakeries on Yelp, asking whether anyone could make an 8" toasted almond crème cake with mascarpone icing. Monica from the Bakeshop responded almost immediately and said they could make a 6" version of what I described, but with almond-flavored buttercream instead. I agreed, paid for the cake, and picked it up the following day. That evening, after the candles and singing, we sat down to enjoy the cake. Unfortunately, it was anything but enjoyable. The cake was dense, dry, and tasteless. Aside from a slight sweetness, the icing was virtually flavorless as well. The only thing "almond" about the cake seemed to be the slivered almonds sprinkled on top. It was disappointing for all of us--and, since I was the one who ordered it, a little embarrassing for me. I reached out to Monica and described the problems. She asked me to return the cake so she could "evaluate the product and address the issue before issuing a refund." That wasn't a problem. Despite three of us trying to eat it, we still had about ¾ of the cake left because nobody wanted more than a few bites. Then Monica disappeared. I heard nothing after returning the cake, and my follow-up emails went unanswered. I'm not a baker--and, based on this cake, I'm not entirely convinced the person who made it was either. I suspect that they used almond flour instead of wheat flour, perhaps thinking that was how to make an almond-flavored cake. Sadly, as I've learned from watching far too much The Great British Baking Show, almond flour doesn't actually provide the almond flavor most people associate with almond cake, and using too much of it can produce exactly the kind of dense, dry texture we ended up with. A bad cake is one thing. Taking the cake back to "evaluate" it, and then simply ignoring the customer afterward, turned a disappointing birthday purchase into a genuinely bad experience. UPDATE: The Bakeshop eventually got back to me, explained what had happened, and resolved the issue. I appreciate that and give them credit for making things right. I would still suggest asking for a sample before ordering anything "off book" or significantly different from what's on their regular menu. And speaking of almond, I did get a chance to try one of their almond croissants, and it was really good. My wife has also picked up a couple of pastries from their Vienna shop, and those were excellent as well. So while I'd be hesitant to order another custom or specialty cake without tasting it first, I wouldn't hesitate to buy their freshly baked, ready-made items again. read more

Very inconspicuous shop! I was pleasantly surprised to be able to discover more and more things while here during the visit. First I was greeted by a customer while I was reading the outside sign on a pumpkin spicy latte, a customer that was leaving stopped and turned and explained it was everything and do good and if I have not, I must as they put actual pumpkin puree inside not just that pump pump stuff. So I was sold walking in. Next up was home made cookies making ice cream sandwich's by the front door. before I could even get through the line to the front, I was greeted with more baked goods, cupcakes, scones, macroons, dog biscuits - normal biscuits! So I went to town ordering a variety being asked by my lil and my inner child. While sipping on my now, pumpkin spiced latte from here, I saw actual meals being served and I missed out on ordering sandwiches from the back :( Something I will be coming back for! I did get up and order more things, like a fall inspired cookie ice cream sandwhich, all alone by itself in a sea of other flavors, I had to rescue it. And the sour macrons! Bake shop is my go to bakery in this area, my favorite place to get a sweet treat. The Falls Church one is just as awesome as Arlington, the parking lot is a bit tighter so keep that in mind. I absolutely love their macaroons, they are so big and perfect perfectly made, the pistachio one is my favorite. I love to see that the staff was not only super friendly, but was very aware and sanitary. When I ordered and was picking out my macaroons, they changed gloves after touching the pistachio ones before touching any of the others. It's things like that and small details that really show me that they care about attention to detail. read more

Delicious baked goods, the Xtreme Cookie Dough Cupcake and Frozen Hot Chocolate Pie are my faves! The Frozen Hot Chocolate Pie hits the spot with a chocolate mousse, Oreo crust, and topped with whipped cream. The Xtreme Cookie Dough Cupcake is a moist cupcake with chocolate chips and a nice cookie dough frosting on top. Whenever Bakeshop announces it has these cupcakes on Instagram, I try to make a trip to the bakery to snap a cupcake! The fudgey Brownie was pretty moist and also tasty. The Oreo in a Blanket, which is a stuffed Oreo in a chocolate chip cookie, is fun to try and best heated up for 15 seconds. Otherwise it's rock hard (I've learned my lesson over the years!). The Almond Croissant was a bit of a miss, it had a sweet almond frosting cream instead of the traditional yellow frangipane creamy custard. The baked goods can be stale, they aren't baked daily. So check/carefully inspect the pastries before buying. I ordered a cookie cake from the Clarendon location and it was dry and rock hard. Excited to try the Cookie Dough Extreme Cake and looking forward to visiting the Bakeshop in Vienna. read more

Quick update to say that their berry scones and almond croissants are both worth a try. As a native Flordian, their Key Lime Pie is one of the better ones I've had outside my beloved homeland and I'll back to get that again. Their coffee (especially the chickory and Vietnamese) are also always worth a try. Everyone is very friendly here and they do their best to keep the line moving fast but keep in mind the place isn't huge so if they're crowded you might want to get your order to go. A 6-inch cake was a perfect size for 8 people with a few extra slices. The cake was well made and very moist. Probably one of the best vegan cakes I had. I came by for late night desserts, and the cashier was very knowledgeable and willing to give suggestions! She recommended the gluten free brownie, but ultimately I went with a brookie with vanilla ice cream. I had to search the box for one with vanilla, but it was SO worth it! It's huge and so delicious and the flavor of both combined and was so so good! It was pretty frozen solid and I was pleasantly surprised that it did not melt for my 35 min drive home. It was actually the right consistency for when I got home to devour! My friends who bought one and at it right away still enjoyed it but it was so hard for them to eat. I got two Gingersnap cookies and a Nutella pie. The cookies were very stale - I was incredibly disappointed, especially since I remember this same cookie from the Clarendon location a few years ago was decadent. How long do they hold on to their cookies until they throw them out? These taste at least a couple days old to me. The Nutella pie was decent but the crust also tasted stale. We love Bakeshop! This place has a large assortment of pie/cake, cookies, macaroons, ice cream sandwiches and cupcakes. Our favorites are the blueberry oatmeal cookie and peanut butter nutella pie. I also really like the Vietnamese iced coffee. This location is great because it has parking and outdoor seating. There are only a few tables, 5 tables that fit two. Went to the Arlington location for the first time, but leaving the review here since I don't see the Arlington Bake Shop on Yelp. Cute and cozy ambiance, very small space with limited seating. Staff is very friendly and helpful in answering questions and providing recommendations! Presentation of the baked goods was 10/10, so many different kinds of flavors for the desserts. I ordered the Vietnamese cold brew, which was perfectly bold with subtle sweetness to accompany the robust coffee notes. The Vietnamese coffee cake didn't taste like coffee at all, it just tasted like chocolate cake, but it was perfectly moist and tasty nonetheless -- the name is just slightly deceiving. They have a freezer filled with different combinations of ice cream sandwiches, and I grabbed a brookie + cookies n cream sandwich. It was a HUGE sandwich and very tasty. I also ordered a funfetti macaron, snickerdoodle cookie, and a brookie. The macaron was super cute and tasted just like funfetti. The snickerdoodle was on the light side in terms of cinnamon, but it was still delicious. The brookie was just alright, I don't think I would order it again. There are all sorts of cakes and cookies brownies and desserts that are a mix of brownie and cookie (that's one of the ones we tried and yum!) and macarons and croissants and the list goes on! The counter and the refrigerator case are full and it is hard to choose. We tried several things (all for the non-selfish reason of being able to write a more complete review for humanity of course....). Our favorite was the aforementioned brownie cookie. We also enjoyed the Vietnamese iced coffee chocolate cake and caramel drizzled cupcake. The Biscoff cake was good but we wished it had a stronger flavor.
