I would recommend Heirloom Cremation. The process was relatively easy for us to schedule the cremation, and then to schedule to pick up the urn so we could take it to the boat for scattering. Any time I had a question they answered immediately by email or phone. I was able to pick up his ashes directly from the crematory and the representatives there were just as wonderful. It's exactly as advertised, no hidden fees or up charges and Markia was very helpful throughout. However there were 2 things rather upsetting to me. 1. They sent a pic to identify my brother. It was not his face just an up close view of a part, not enough to identify, I had to request another picture. Again nearly impossible to identify. Having been through the cremation process with my parents I was NEVER asked to identify anyone and I found this really upsetting especially because I couldn't tell anything. 2. When I went to pick up the urn it is a very poorly marked suite which had me driving around to the back of the building looking for business names and I realized this was the actual crematorium. Again maybe that's normally where you pick up and I never realized it before with other relatives, but seeing that was very upsetting. I still recommend them but want people to be prepared as I was not. read more

My dad recently passed and we used Heirloom. It was unexpected and I choose Heirloom based on the great reviews I read. What a nightmare. Their communication was awful from day 1. I spoke with Renee initially and gave her all of the hospital information to get started. She said she would send over paperwork by email & a link to pay- I never received so I called the next day and left a message. They never called back so I ended up resubmitting through their website. I thought things were finally off to a good start, but then never received any follow ups. I had to reach out for status on if my dad had been picked up and what to expect next. They assured me that he was in their care and to expect more paperwork to finalize the death certificate within a couple days. I had to follow up AGAIN a week later since they never replied to emails or sent me additional info. I then spoke to Renee again and she apologized and assured me that she would be sending over the correct paperwork right away. She even gave me her cell number for a direct line. I didn't receive the email so I texted her the next morning to confirm the email and she said she would resend. Still nothing. At this point, I called and spoke to Markia who said she would resend. I was expecting a prompt resend since they had "sent" it twice in the last 24 hours but it took a full day because they had to redo it with corrections. I am certain they never sent it to begin with since I had received other communication from them. I then had to reach back out to confirm when my dad was scheduled to actually be cremated. They said the end of the week and would be in touch to schedule a pick up. I did not hear back again so had to reach back out the following week to ask what's next. She scheduled me for a Thursday at 11:30. All this was via text and very unprofessional. I asked for an address Wednesday because I realized they never sent any formal confirmation. She texted back a Fullerton address. I was expecting San Diego and Renee mentioned the facility was Convoy area. It was never clear that he had been moved to Orange County. This was very upsetting to have confusion about where my dad was. I immediately called and Markia was flustered and needed to confirm that his remains were actually in SD and explained SD is only an intake center. She then told me the SD guy was going to confirm the pick up she had already "confirmed." The SD office called to confirm that their pick up hours are only 6am to 9am since he is transporting and on the road other hours. Unbelievable business hours. Henry at SD was very kind and apologetic. But the communication and customer service for such a sensitive time was atrocious. It made it so much more difficult and I had no confidence my dad was being taken care of. I have felt sick over this and wished I would have took the first red flag and went somewhere else. read more

Her advice: "they all do essentially the same thing" especially if you are looking for direct cremation where you retain the ashes. Wound up getting all the services and paperwork done that I would have going with someone that would've charged me three times the amount. I was going through the worst time if my life. I had no clue as to what I was doing and didn't know where to go. I called Heirloom,I had called many many cremation services, I got Markia on the line. She was AMAZING! Through the entire process she held my hand. She was empathetic, warm and caring. She always answered my calls or immediately returned them.
