UNTIL A WEEK LATER. We get a text that says our dog was 47 pounds and we owe $50. How did my dog gain 18 pounds a week after she was dropped off to be cremated. Nancy (intake person) commented "wow she saved you $50 by being under 31 pounds" kind of a morbid statement as our doggy stopped eating and drinking on her last days. When the contract was signed he stated that we would be able to rotate (due to only 30 people allowed) yet he changed his mind during the viewing and said he would call the police on the grieving family if we did not leave! Mark answered my call late at night after my cat had unexpectedly passed away, I had no idea who to call, so I googled and this place came up. I felt comfortable from the moment he answered, he didn't even care that it was late, he explained the process and instructed me on how to care for our cat overnight and assured me that they would do they're best. Very bad experience with my 2 pre need contracts. I had to cancel my contracts and was promised my money back by this company numerous times. Preferred handled this situation very poorly. The trust had changed hands and not let me know where my $ was and to top off; I needed to start another pre-need plan in another state. 2 Good reasons for cancelling. I had to get my attorney involved after many calls to the rep at Preferred, who was out of the office most of the time, and always promising my checks from the trust when we did speak. A month and half later my attorney opened the case. I was criticized for letting them know I was getting my attorney involved. I am glad that I cancelled with Preferred; and found a much friendlier, reliable and honest company to work with. read more

The attitude from Ralph Mark/Ma at this business has caused great distress to my entire family. We ask for booklets to be made for my dear late grandfathers obituary to be done on Friday. Ralph has made it an effort to make sure he procrastinated finishing the booklets until Thursday night. He lacks professionalism, accountability and over all integrity. It's Thursday and he claims that he would rather make a one page collage instead because he's tired. We paid them up front for 4 page booklets and the quality is not up to pare with the prices they charge. I would not recommend this business to a dead cat. When I had to make arrangements for my father, Mark came into the office when they were closed for a holiday, Abe worked above and beyond expected to get our booklets and bookmarks done before our memorial service, and even added last minute photos, and a wonderful video for the viewing. Tyrone made my father looking very natural for the viewing which was a full week after passing. All the other funeral homes/mortuary's looked like 60/70's old dark depressing church types. My Mother passed away unexpectedly and I was referred to this funeral home by a close family friend. When you lose a loved one suddenly the last thing that you want to think about is how am I going to pay for a funeral. I didn't feel pressured with money matters, the funeral director Mark listened patiently as I tried to convey my Mother's final wishes before putting together a pricing package and helping me with my questions about her insurance policy and forms that needed to be filled out. The actual funeral service was a very customized elegant candle light evening ceremony held in their onsite chapel which was beautifully decorated with red roses. Most funeral homes that I've been in before give me the creeps especially at night, but not this one, which is modern and tastefully decorated. The onsite chapel is intimate and peaceful, not cold and overwhelming. The staff was able to arrange for several artists to sing and play live music during the ceremony which was exactly what we wanted. We provided the staff with family photos which were turned into a beautiful memorial video, some of the photos were also used in creating the keepsake memorial brochures. The evening ceremony went off seamlessly and was the perfect tribute that my family was looking for. We also took advance of their catering services which was not the usual cheese/crackers, cake/coffee reception, instead our guests were able to enjoy a wonderful sit-down dinner in the adjoining well-appointed dining room. My business did some emergency work for Preferred Cremation's building. The work was verbally approved by the owner, Mark Jenkins. After completing the work as proposed and agreed upon, Mr. Jenkins refused to pay the bill. He claimed he never approved that extent of work and didn't expect such a large bill, but agreed to pay half of the whopping $407.00.Shockingly 3 months later the $200 we agreed to split remains unpaid. Be careful doing business with this company as the owner does not hold his word. He did it once to my scheduling department and again to myself regarding payment. Our mom's service was on 9/22/18 and our mother's ashes & money we paid for the burial plot was not delivered to Mt. Hope Cemetery until 12/24/18. I guess I never posted a review for Preferred last year, and shame on me. My husband had a lingering death from a terminal illness, and when friends pointed out I wouldn't want to choose a funeral home at the last minute, I spent a lot of time online researching what's available in town, and what options there are for cremation. I was surprised to discover that Preferred is one of the very few companies that doesn't belong to a chain -- there are not nearly as many true alternatives in San Diego as you'd think from the names of all the "different" mortuaries. All of the reviews for Preferred were outstanding, and I liked what I found on their website. Their prices were very competitive, and even on their website, unlike most of the other websites I visited, they don't try to guilt you into services you don't want or can't afford. My husband died on a Saturday evening. He had been in a study at UCSD and was to have an autopsy as part of that, so I didn't expect to need to make arrangements for cremation for a few days. To my shock, I was told I had to have him picked up by 8am Sunday morning! Awk. I called Preferred and they were simply great. They took care of everything. I wanted direct cremation, no viewing or service, and to have the cremains shipped to an ash scattering company near San Francisco. They made absolutely no attempt to talk me into anything else -- they didn't even mention that there were other options for me to consider -- and were very kind and understanding. It turned out there had been a miscommunication between hospice and the hospital doing the autopsy, and the death certificate hadn't been signed. Preferred tracked down the problem -- which wasn't easy -- keeping me updated at least once a day, and eventually got everything straightened out.
