Greek food is delicious. The Hellenic is a travesty. We were there on a Friday evening this March (2011) with another couple while visiting the North Fork. The service started auspiciously with drinks around. Mine was a very good local brew, Greenport Harbor ale. It was downhill from there. My wife ordered a small Greek salad and an order of calamari for her dinner. I ordered spanokopita and an open-faced pork souvlaki, their signature dish. Our friends ordered chicken souvlaki, and the husband asked for a side of beets. They didn't offer sides of beets, only a full order. Who can eat ten dollars worth of beets? See if you can get me a side order. Off to the kitchen. Nope, no sides of beets. Then what's the vegetable of the day? That was on the menu. There is no vegetable of the day. What do you have in the way of vegetables? Off to the kitchen. We can give you tomatoes. Okay, tomatoes it is. We asked that everything be served together, but the salad, calamari, and spanokopita came twenty minutes before everything else. I split my spanokopita four ways, a forkful apiece, so everyone would have something to eat (good, but not a great value at $9.75.) My wife passed the salad and calamari around. No takers. The "Greek salad" was a mound of finely chopped iceberg lettuce with a couple of tomato wedges, about four calamata olives, and a sprinkling of pencil eraser-sized pieces of feta cheese, all drenched in olive oil and vinegar. A nutritious bargain at only $7.95. The calamari was too lightly fried and greasy. Not really to die for. Finally came the souvlaki, five or six small pieces of pork (or chicken) smothered with a mass of "marinated", mushed tomatoes that rendered the underlying pita a soggy mess. My first piece of pork wasn't done. The remainder were dried out and tough. Did I mention tasteless? The chicken variety was no better. Verily, unsouvlaki-like. The order of tomatoes finally came after only two reminders to the waiter. A complete failure to arrive of this heaping plate of mooshed tomatoes would have been merciful. No one licked their plates clean. When the bus person arrived, and I surveyed this disaster, I realized I really should say something, and I asked to see the manager. Arrived a young man who announced himself the owner. When I told him our meal was not up to the quality we expected for the prices he was charging (or really, at any prices), his response was "Why did you eat it?" He had me there. Just because we were out on a Friday night for dinner with friends and reluctant to uproot ourselves in the middle of a meal to search for another restaurant isn't much of an excuse. He continued: they've been in business for 35 years and, except for "shysters" trying to get out of paying, had a loyal following and few or no complaints. Some close-by diners began backing out of range. I assured him we were not shysters and fully intended to pay for our food. He agreed, perhaps with more force than necessary that, yes, we would pay because we had eaten the meal. In return for his graciousness, I tried to soften my criticism by praising the beer, but he stalked off and back to the kitchen. Moral: Don't go to the Hellenic unless you're desperate. The only reason they've been in business for 35 years, judging by their fare now, is because they're the only game in town. And because, after you taste your meal, it's too late to get away. read more

Here is a confrontational statement for you. I KNOW THE BEST RESTAURANT! And when I tell you, you will absolutely agree with me. It's the restaurant that knows you. The Hellenic is such a place. My family and I happened upon this warm and friendly culinary oasis about 9 years ago. Their specializing in Greek cuisine fooled me into thinking that this was another Greek diner. An absolutely wrong assumption. We had gone back countless times and became acquainted with the Giannaris family who have created and owned this venerable North Shore establishment for almost 50 years. The food has always been fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. The salads display an eye-popping color with a crispy crunch in the bite. The fish dishes, as only the Greeks know how to do, are so flavorful with the least amount of sauces. This allows the full natural flavor to burst through in your mouth. Try their whole fish. And, what compliments this culinary experience? A good glass of wine. The Hellenic is a true team player within the Long Island Wine Country experience. They have a full list of local, domestic and imported wine. Try their various flights of wine, which are orchestrated to accompany the various dishes. Sometimes George Giannaris, chef and managing partner, discovers an exciting vinous find. It won't be on his list, so you have to ask. One other thing. Do you remember the TV show Cheers? Well, the Hellenic is certainly a place where everyone knows your name. There's always cross table conversation and friendly banter. As you look around any of their three dining rooms you may spot a local celebrity wine maker or even Martha Stewart grabbing a bite on her way to the ferry. Also, if you haven't been there this year, you will be pleasantly surprised to find their bar area transformed into an elegant yet cozy smaller dining room. Check out the new bar. George built it with his own two hands. Great place to come for an intimate dinner. I know you will enjoy the same experience that my family and friends have. Enjoy. It's sad to see folks with a personal vendetta posting one star reviews of what is arguably one of the best, most consistent restaurants on the North Fork. Check out my past reviews of the Hellenic, I have literally been going there for almost two decades and have occasionally brought groups of 50 plus with me. I wouldn't be doing that if the food wasn't exceptional and the staff and service likewise. What you probably don't know is that during the Pandemic, George and his family decided to figure out how to ship some of their favorites nation wide. Because of their singular focus on the quality of food on the plate, he asked if he could ship me, gratis, hundreds of dollars worth of Slouvaki as a test run. Included in the packaging were data logging thermocouples to track the temperature from door to door! This is a place that puts quality on the plate and friendly service at the forefront. Please, ignore the one star reviews and try them out yourself. You won't be disappointed. read more

I am currently eating the best pork souvlaki platter, I have EVER had! :) love this place and recommend it to all! Try something new! The specials change almost every time I have dinner here. There are almost 10 to choose from, some familiar others more exotic. I like to try new food and the Hellenic always comes through with something different and delicious :) ... Don't forget the all local craft beer selection (another fav of mine) cheers! Well... yelp insists I write on lol so... I would like to tip my hat to the owners and staff . The environment I receive at the Hellenic is that of a home away from home. They are always friendly and accommodating (to everyone!). The one thing I will say is that communication is key! Anytime there has ever been the smallest confusion or discomfort the staff relays my message to the management who proceed to fix the situation prompt and accordingly. Friends and I went to the Hellenic for cocktails and dinner last night. The service was friendly and helpful in choosing entrees and appetizers . The quality of the preparation and presentation was impeccable . Noteworthy is the fresh organic ingredients that are utilized in every dish. From tomatoes to delicious local fish the quality of the food was outstanding. We have also visited the new bar which serves appetizers and drinks during happy hour at a reduced price. I especially liked the fact that every main dish had a suggested wine pairing that never disappoints and that is suitable to every budget. Hellenic has definitely become our go-to place in Greenport for good service and excellent organic food. read more

Beautiful Sunday morning breakfast on an amazing patio watching the traffic on the North Road made it seem like I was on vacation. The menu is not overwhelming so I knew everything would be fresh. The variety of cheeses to choose from to add to the eggs were a delightful taste and added the perfect amount of flavor where I savored each bite. Portions were perfect...not too much and I was satisfied. Our server was very helpful....I asked her to describe each of the dishes since I'm not familiar with the Greek terms and she made making my selection easier. Service was good, prices were adequate and I was extremely happy with the overall experience. Definitely a place to visit when on the North Fork. read more

After reading some of the obvious fake reviews left recently I felt compelled to review Hellenic. You don't stay in business for over five decades or however long it's been if this is true. Furthermore, you don't stay in business that long in this area where the winters are desolate if anything these negative reviews said are true. Owner is an amazing caring thoughtful guy who loves his customers. He bends over backwards to make his customers happy. His wife and family do the same. This place is amazing and delicious. We love the Hellenic. It's menu is like no other with a variety to please everyone. The wait staff are incredibly patient with all our questions & always happy & pleasant. The food is fresh, delicious & hot. The outdoor seating is so comfortable and spacious with a beautiful green lawn and many fire pits to snuggle up around on beautiful fall days. The indoor dining rooms are lovely, we have a favorite round table in the corner. The drink menu has something for everyone. They cater to the young & the young at heart, everyone is always very happy here, & The owners George & Maria are always so welcoming to all their patrons. WE ARE NEVER DISAPPOINTED HERE. read more

My son Niklas turned 18 and of course he chose his favorite restaurant Hellenic to have a family dinner.....but the service from Tracy and Debbie the hostess was out of this world. They always go above and beyond to make sure we have everything. The food is the best. Its not only fresh but is presented with elegance. I love Hellenic and would send anyone in that direction for a wonderful meal and awesome service. I might ad also everyone is super friendly, even the cooks. If there is a better brunch spot on the NoFo, I haven't found it.. George, whose family have run the place for 41years, is such a gracious host. He came over to chat, and we learned that not only is this the only place where I've ever had moussaka for breakfast (there are fabulous omelettes and other conventional brunch items too!) , but George makes his own gelato (divine!), serves 27 local wines (my favorite wineries are all represented!), and is a seasoned NoFo travel advisor. The food was yummy, the service friendly and thoughtful, and this is now my go-to brunch spot. Love it! read more

My family and I have been going to The Hellenic Snack Bar for many years now. It is the place choose to go to for my birthday. Another reviewer wrote that she could make a meal out of the skordalia (sp?) alone - and I agree! The gyros and souvlaki are the best - it's difficult to order something different from the menu when you know these are so delicious. Everyone is so very friendly - never a problem with the staff. I live in downtown Greenport and walk to most dinners, but I'm always happy to get in the car to go to the Hellenic. We usually go with another couple who have lived here all their lives. Hellenic is a special treat, and a place where we usually don't even need to look at the menu. I wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend the Hellenic to anyone visiting Greenport or the North Fork. Really great place as I experienced, I was attended quickly and all the food is great, this Is a great place to eat. The flooring is really nice. The waiters are kind. To me there's nothing bad about the place and every thing is homemade which makes this place a keeper! Hellenic is consistent and always excellent! I love this place. The owners are great and they have been there since it opened about thirty or so years ago. The outdoor dining is wonderful especially on a cool summer night. The menu is vast and reasonable. The portions are huge and it is very kid friendly. The are always packed. I've been there on a busy night when the service is slow but it just adds to the anticipation of eating one of the best Greek meals I have ever had. read more

Old school goodness in a rapidly gentrifying area. I work in Astoria Queens and this place is easily as good or better than any of the spots there. Favorite Dish? Well I have not yet tried EVERYTHING on the menu so it is hard to say. But I lean toward things that are unique to you and uniquely Greek like the moussaka and spanakopita and grilled octopus. You can get some things anywhere - chicken, steaks - but the more traditional dishes are the best choice, I say. read more

Hellenic Snack bar has been a favorite for 30+ years. The food is always fresh and you are greeted like you are part of the family. My husband always chooses the souvlaki but when he really wants to treat himself it's the fresh whole Porgy. As a vegetarian, I am a fan of the beets and the split pea salad. Love the fresh dill. On a hot day you can't beat the homemade lemonade. Cool and refreshing. read more

George and his staff have a goldmine of a business. Serving delicious food with an attentive staff is surely what has kept them in business for so many years. The menu has a ton of options and everything is exactly what you'd expect it to be. In the busy season it can get packed and that means a little longer wait time. Even for take out.
