There's a great selection, the sandwiches are delicious, and most importantly, it's super affordable. Where else in New York City can you get a quality lunch for 8 bucks? As others have said, what really sets this place apart though is the customer service. The Asian woman who works at the cash register is an absolute joy. Lo and behold there he was in the flesh behind the cash register. Considering its in NYC and is a "tourist spot," the prices at hello deli are very reasonable. My New Yorker Club was ~$7 and actually really good! Generous portions of pastrami with a slightly sweet zing to it. Rupert was down to earth and a really good sport about taking a photo with me. I really loved this place. My guy and I were walking around NYC with the intention of grabbing a quick lunch to go so we could have a picnic lunch in Central Park. With so many places to choose from and not knowing a single place, we happened upon this place and we are so glad we did! We walked in and while the shop is a bit crammed, there are lots of great sandwiches and goodies to be had! The lady behind the counter had the most amazing banter and personality we almost wished there was enough room to sit and have a chat. I didn't know the history of this place, so it was a little cool to see various things from The Late Show to purchase. We browsed the large menu and decided on two delicious sounding sandwiches: My guy went for the "Big Ass" which had turkey, pastrami, ham, american cheese, lettuce, tomato mayo and muster all on a "hero" bun. I went for the "Regis Philban" which was roast chicken, meunster cheese, lettuce tomoto and ranch dressing on a baguette. Oh holy me, these sandwiches were GREAT! We also grabbed two bags of crisps and some sodas paid and were on our way. The lady working was so friendly and the service was so quick, we vowed we would be back during our trip if not in the future and we'll stick by that promise! I remember eating at this place on a high school art trip.. before I even paid attention to who David Letterman was. I was impressed with the politeness and welcoming vibe I got from the owners. Today I went in and Rupert himself was there! But he's so modest and not a ham at all, it was actually refreshing to meet a "celebrity" and simply order a sandwich. There was a huge line for Colbert outside but none of them seemed interested in the Deli. Anyway, the food: good! A sandwich will surely simultaneously satisfy your hunger and satisfy your obsessive desire to eat at a famous landmark. In sum, the sandwiches are great and they come out quick. Best in the world? Being a David Letterman fan and in New York City for the first time, I had to visit Hello Deli, which is co-owned by Rupert Jee. In years past, Rupert was a frequent participant in comedy routines on CBS' Late Show when David Letterman was the host. My goal was to get sandwiches to-go for the family and get a picture taken with Rupert. However, plans changed when May, the other co-owner of the Hello Deli, invited my family to have seats while we waited for our sandwiches. The deli is very small but they managed to fit a narrow table with room for four. There was also a small table for two and three seats along a ledge in front of the large window looking out on to the street. As we waited, we watched as other customers came in with their orders. Almost all were customers who were getting their food to-go. Many appeared to be regulars and some were first timers like us. While Rupert is very friendly and quiet, May is friendly and very outgoing. She was engaging in conversation with every customer as they came in. The sandwiches were brought to our table by Rupert and since we were settled in our seats, we decided to stay and eat them there. I had the "Alan Kalter" which was smoked turkey, avocado, sweet peppers, romaine, and pesto on a baguette. It was very delicious. My daughter loved the Chicken Parmasean sandwich which was breaded cutlet with mozzarella, parmasean, and tomato on a hero. Also getting raves from my family was the Tuna Crunch, tuna salad with celery, onions, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, and dijonaise on a pita. At the end of our meal, as we were paying for our lunch at the cash register, since we were the only customers at Hello Deli at that moment, May engaged in a prolonged friendly conservation with me, my wife, and my kids. By the time we left Hello Deli, we felt like we were part of the Hello Deli family. Because of the very friendly service, my family wanted to go back for lunch on the last day of our vacation. May remembered our names from two days earlier and we continued our conversation from our first visit. As for the food, the sandwiches were very good. If I worked in the neighborhood, I'd be coming in every few days to buy a sandwich for lunch. Hello Deli is far from a fancy restaurant. This is not a place to eat for the atmosphere. A fan favorite deli for fans of late night shows. Hello Deli is similar to a traditional deli where they offer bagels, breakfast, and lunch sandwiches. The menus were "down" but they had a small chalkboard listing a few specials. I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese for $2.50. The bagel was not "bad" but it wasn't fresh either. Similar in taste and consistency to frozen bagels. However, the cashier was very nice and sweet doling out compliments and hon' and Cutie Pie like it was going out of style. But, if you cross her, she can be a bit salty. She told a construction worker, he wasn't being helpful. I might come back to try the other items on the menu, but definitely not for the bagels. Tiny little place but I was so happy to stumble in! First of all, I walked in around 9am and was greeted by a super sweet Asian lady who knew her customers well. When my coworker suggested eating at this small deli made famous by the "Late Show" with David Letterman, I figured it would be tourist trap. But I was wrong. It ended up being an awesome experience that can only happen in New York. About a year ago, I was on a business trip and my coworker randomly scored tickets to the "Late Show." Since he loves the show, he wanted to lunch here. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by the owner, Rubert (who is an occasional participant in skits on the show). He had a smile on his face and was working the cash register. The line was small, but it took up most of the space inside the small deli full of character (and Late Show references). As the group of people in front paid and eventually grabbed their sandwiches, one girl noticed that they had over ordered and paid for an extra sandwich and chips. Instead of giving it all back to Rupert for a refund, she turned back to me, looked at me up and down, and asked me a question. Random NYC Girl: So, do you want this or what? Archie: Sorry. I have a girlfriend. She's real. I swear. Random NYC Girl: That's too bad. But I meant the sandwich, silly. Archie: Oh. What kind? Random NYC Girl: Picky one, huh? Archie: Yeah. Very. So it was cost-effective like eating at Subway, except at penny pinching Subway they won't even give you a free bell pepper. Cheap bastards. People filtered in and out throughout lunch time. But for the most part, it was just people trying to grab some lunch on the run. One couple from Indianapolis was there on vacation and had no idea this was a Deli made famous by TV. Of course like most patrons that visit the Hello Deli, I would never have known of this place had it not been for Letterman. I used to watch the show back in HS and especially college. Back when Dave still had fangs, and had little compunction about using them on lame guests.... like most supermodels. I was delighted to see Rupert Jee still packin' 'em in, and doesn't look much different at all than he did when Letterman first started having segments including Rupert. The menu has grown quite a bit over the years, but I had to go w/the classic "Big Ass sandwich." Plenty of meat in this one, folks, absolutely delicious and filling. There's a urban legend that the deli is a prop (secret cover up created by the show) and Rupert Gee is a paid actor. Yup, this a real deli and Rupert is working behind the counter. There are souvenirs and tee shirts for sale and his sandwiches are named after celebrities. I ordered the Letterman, which consists of turkey, ham, american cheese, sweet peppers, lettuce, tomato, mayo, oil and vinegar, on a hero.. The sandwich was stuffed thick, all for $5.95 Also ordered fries and bottle of diet coke. Prices are cheap considering that this deli has celebrity status. A highlight of my visit to NYC was visiting Hello Deli, often visited by David Lettermen during the Late Show. Rupert was there when I went in, he autographed a Hello Deli T shirt which is now framed and hanging in my man cave. A tiny deli, and a stop before visiting the Ed Sullivan theatre where David Letterman does the Late Show. Got a cup of coffee and a really moist and delicious piece of lemon pound cake. There was a ridiculously long line and it took forever because EVERYONE was wanting their photo with Rupert and he was kind enough to take the time to get a photo with anyone that asked. Let me tell you why. 1) They were AN HOUR LATE. 2) They didn't even call to tell me they were running late. 3) Delivery guy was an effing idiot and called me three times from the lobby not knowing what to do. WTF DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE STILL IN THE LOBBY??? DELIVER THAT SHIT, DAMN. I had to ask him to put the lobby on the phone and speak to the lobby myself. 4) I originally placed the order for 12pm but the lady who took my order asked if she could deliver at 11:45am to avoid some of the lunch time rush. I didn't effing realize she meant 12:45pm. If YOU are the one asking to deliver it EARLIER than I wanted, it is absolutely unacceptable to deliver it AN HOUR LATE. 5) Dumb lady on the phone was absolutely useless.
