Found this little gem of a diner looking for a place to grab lunch right of Grand Central! Diners are always great so we figured we would give it a try! Waiters were wonderful! All of them. Always checking in , filling up coffee cups , restaurant was clean and not overly busy . We didn't need to wait when we arrived. My friend and both ordered an omelette . She built hers and I just added an item to my omelette. I know it's New York but when it's 4.50 extra just to add ham to your omelette!! I think that's a bit too much!! My omelette already came with mushroom and cheese. Meanwhile my friend was charged 1.50 for each item . Makes no sense to me. Even after asking about it! I came to Flame Diner today hoping to escape the smoke outside, clear my head, and enjoy a great waffle. Instead, I was met with blatant discrimination and constant harassment. The moment I walked in with my service dog, Luna, we were immediately shunned. The staff member forced us to sit all the way in the back and aggressively warned me that if Luna didn't stay completely under the table at all times, we would be kicked out. Luna was laying quietly on the floor, but he continued to harass us throughout my entire meal, repeatedly coming over to demand she be tucked under. At one point, he actually touched my arm and tried to justify his behavior by claiming that a customer last week had a dog and "people got sick from it." I have a legally protected disability, and Luna is my trained service animal. What happened with a completely different dog last week is not my business and is no excuse to violate federal law. To top it off, after being harassed my entire dinner, he had the nerve to come back and tell me that "two people got up and left" because of my dog--completely ruining what was left of my night. All of this absolute disrespect and illegal segregation, just to be handed a bill for a mediocre $20 waffle. Unbelievable. Under the ADA and NYC human rights laws, you cannot segregate service dog handlers to the back or harass them. I will absolutely be filing a formal complaint with the Department of Justice and NYC 311. Truly disgusting behavior. read more

To be honest, I ate at this restaurant because it was only half a block away from where I was staying on 44th St. and 6th Avenue. Because of that, I wound up eating dinner and breakfast there. To quote Lew H.'s review from May 2005, "The Red Flame is okay, nothing more, nothing less. The food is okay, the service is okay, the interior is okay." Everything was a solid three stars -- not bad, but nothing stands out. On the plus side, they have a tremendous variety of food -- something that is typical at many New York diners. However, nothing stands out as memorable. Also, I felt the price was very high for mid-level quality ($70.68 for dinner). For dinner, we ordered a hamburger and fries, a roast beef sandwich, a wrap. For breakfast we had eggs, toast, corn beef hash, and potatoes; a strawberry granola crunch; and a bagel with cream cheese and lox. You get a lot of food and you get it fast! The service has picked up since my last visit and the waitstaff was very attentive. I like to try diners everywhere I go and the Red Flame fit the bill. The price is right. Is it fancy? Definitely not. But, when you're hungry or in a hurry, this is the place for you! The dining room and the kitchen appear to be very clean. Really love this place pre theatre matinee as I was in the mood for breakfast. They were quite busy, but found seats at the counter. Everyone was very nice and we didn't feel rushed. Next time I need to try dessert. I think they try to seat everyone in a timely manner as I noticed a small table wedged in where a table shouldn't be for an older woman by herself that couldn't sit at the counter. But lately I've noticed something that bothers me and leave this review in the hopes that the restaurant will see it and make an adjustment. Unlike other diners, the Red Flame does not have its bussers bringing you coffee. (I think they used to, but my last few visits they haven't.) so I have to wait for the waiter/waitress to do so. Growing up in Brooklyn, eating at a diner was my family outing: pre or post movie, early Sunday dinner or post beach club, The Arch, The Seaview and the Kings Plaza diner were all on our neighborhood radar and were owned by Greek owners who IMO, ran the best diners. If we wanted a really good burger deluxe or a Western Omelette with a really good cup of coffee, the diner was THE place. Today, sadly, Brooklyn really doesn't have a great diner. We happened upon Red Flame merely by accident, we were avoiding NYC marathon routes thus post Bryant Park visit, we decided to walk in Grand Central Terminal direction. The diner is quite large: two floors and a counter. We were seated in a cozy booth and were handed a menu that was the size of The NY Times. We both knew we wanted a turkey burger deluxe. My friend Rochelle ordered it a bit differently: the Western Cowboy deluxe which comes with cheese, onion rings and BBQ sauce just substituted a turkey patty instead of beef. We were served coleslaw and pickles while our orders were being prepared. Back in the day, Brooklyn diners laid out a separate bowl of pickles ( sour, half sour, etc) and plates of coleslaw. Here we are served coleslaw in tiny plastic containers and a pickle. Let's just say here's where you don't judge a book by it's cover: the coleslaw blew me away.. the creamiest, freshest slaw I've tasted in a long time. I loved it so much, " More please!" and my waitress delivered. The turkey burger was delicious and the fries were super crispy and just out of the oven hot. However, the lettuce that accompanied it looked inedible. Rochelle's Cowboy was missing it's lasso: it stated onion rings and she was served two and fries. We were hoping to split my fries and her rings.. oh well. She found the BBQ sauce salty. The portions are generous so this could be lunch/dinner. The service was pleasant and quick. I'm dropping one star for inedible lettuce, seriously Red Flame your cole slaw is delicious and needs to be served in a plate not a tiny container and lastly the Cowboy Burger did state onion rings and we were ring less. I now know that a Brooklyn Diner still exists I just have to travel to Manhattan. read more
