He has saved me a lot of money in the long run by steering my away from things i don't really need to worry about and advising me of other things they see when they look over each of my cars - they talk to you like you care about your vehicles and want them to last forever - Dru has never suggested i do anything for my vehicles that was not to keep me safe and keep my vehicles on the road a good long time. Was in town for work from Seattle and my suspension basically collapsed. I was hoping the pump or air bags hadn't gone out which could've knocked me down $2-3k bit that's the price you pay for driving a Mercedes-Benz. Dru was able to get me in that morning at 11am, by 1pm they had diagnosed and she was ready to go. They found some connection issues near the pump, repaired it and just charged me a fare labor price. After the brakes were inspected, I was informed that no, this is just how this particular type of brakes feel, and that no work was necessary. This type of honesty is becoming more and more rare. Females beware: Don't go to this mechanic if you are a woman. I needed a new AC compressor for my 99 Volkswagen Beetle and brought it into this shop, I was referred to them by the Les Schwab a block away. I was emotional from my car needing expensive repairs because I had just visited a Volkswagon mechanic a week earlier.I was a little emotion at the extent of the damage and the mechanic at this shop, Dru, questioned whether it was that time of the month for me. I couldn't believe he made such a personal comment... It gets much worse. That night, he texted me multiple times asking to take me shooting, ask me out to lunch, and even tried to come over to my house even though I told him repeatedly that I had a boyfriend. I kept refusing him and he kept texting me in a rudely forward manner so I had to stop responding altogether as to not piss off the person who was repairing my car. The next day, he texted again asking me what I was doing and where I worked, repeatedly asking to be more specific about the location, or else he couldn't find me at work to "give me a hug." Creepy. It continued to happen the day after that, and the day after. The next day he texted me again saying my car would be ready tomorrow, and then proceeded to try to flirt and be creepy as usual. The next day he texted me from a new number, saying the car would be ready. I was sure to bring my boyfriend to pick up the car and there were no issues during our visit so I hoped he took a hint and would just stop texting me now. I just wanted to get my car and never have to deal with him again. Later that night, he texted me to come have a drink with him at the shop where he works/lives. Also that night, the second number that texted me to tell me the car was ready started texting me as well, saying "send me pics, my boy told me you were thick." I asked Dru whether he was texting me on two numbers and he let me know that his friend was texting me from another phone and wanted to know if I had sent him photos or not. He also said "you can be honest, you're a stripper" and other horrible unsolicited comments. I never gave Dru the SLIGHTEST indication of ANY interest in any of our interactions yet he sent me more than a hundred unwanted texts total, sometimes sending 20 texts in a row with no response. All this is EXTREMELY unprofessional to say the least, and left me with a really bad, creepy feeling. You said I should write a Yelp review Dru, so here it is. read more

I am writing about a one time, last minute repair. I came to them at 5:00 PM on a Friday to get a brake light fixed before a road trip. No one else close by could do it quickly. It is a very relaxed office with the owner keeping his Mastiff oh property, who was well trained and friendly. They took maybe took 10 minutes to fix the brake light, which was great. They didn't"t charge me, just asking that I would come back for any further repairs. I am always happy to patronize our local family shops, especially with that kind of last minute help. Wow. The reviews here are quite the opposite of our experience with this company. Due to the great reviews on yelp, we called in advance to get an inspection/quote on a decent car repair. We scheduled the appointment, dropped the car off early and was given an estimated time well within our window of needing to pick the car up for work. A few hours later, and about a half hour AFTER they said they were going to call us with an estimate/that the car was ready, WE CALLED THEM. We got shuffled through a few different people and got a call back from the person that was supposedly doing the inspection/quote. He rushed through information on the call and wasn't helpful with providing details of what we needed to get fixed. He said the actual price-quote would have to come from someone else who wasn't there at the moment. (They then backed out of telling us they could come pick us up to get back to our car, and at this point we barely had enough time to get the bus and get our car for work. We gave ourselves a large window of time to avoid this scenario so this was frustrating.) When picking up the keys we were told they'd call us later that day with a quote. After a few days of trying to call them/leaving voicemails, we finally heard back from them. The person on the other end of the phone was rushed and very brash. They spoke over our heads and we could barely understand what they were saying, nor were they willing to explain in a way we understood. We were given a pricey estimate but no real quote and was told to come back in again and pay them $95/hour to do ANOTHER inspection. When asked if there was a price range we could expect for the repair, (esp. if we were going to pay them hundreds of dollars just for a quote), they dodged an answer because it could be hundreds of dollars or even thousands of dollars. (We were even asked if we wanted to keep the car at all or just get rid of it. This is a dumb and slightly offensive question to ask if we're trying to bring our car to you to get FIXED!) Luckily a friend overheard the last phone call and we were referred to a wonderful mechanic that we've used multiple times already, so I guess one good thing did come out of this annoying experience. read more

I have several promotional vehicles and I am constantly struggling to find quick, reliable and honest people to work with on the maintenance of our cars. I just recently had the misfortune of having my car break down while downtown and had to have my vehicle towed without having a clue who did solid and reputable work. I had a great experience with Dru and the crew, my vehicle was even completed a day before the estimated time of completion. They were honest, only recommended the work that actually needed to be done, and so far everything is in great working order. Great family-run business that has been passed down from father to son over the course of 40 years. I will be taking my vehicles here for as long as I live in the Portland area. Great, quick service from nice guys. I chose this shop because it was walking distance to my office so I could drop my car off in the AM then just walk to work. I explained the services I thought I needed, but asked them to call with a quote before they did anything. They called mid-morning, with a reasonable price, reminded me of another service that I'd forgotten I needed, and took care of everything by the early afternoon when they called to let me know it was ready. I then got swamped at work and completely forgot about my car! They were super accommodating and texted with me to make sure someone would be there for me to get my car from, even though it was now hours after I'd promised to come get it. I took my 1986 F-150 to Hendrix on 26 December after it failed an emissions test at the DEQ. I was hoping they could fit me in sometime that week to take a look at it, but they looked at the truck the same day. Dru called me to let me know the problems and gave me a quote for the repairs. The repairs were carried out the next day. I'm just back from the DEQ and the truck passed the emissions test easily! Very happy with the work done by Hendrix. Friday August 28 I was driving thru Portland, on my way home to Auburn, WA. On I-405 my car started to overheat and lose power. Hendrix Motor Company was the closest repair place I could find, and I'm glad I did! I dropped my car off at 10am. The mechanic on duty grabbed my info and said he'd begin diagnostics and someone from the office would call with info and an estimate. Within 30-40 minutes they called and I needed a serpentine belt and a water pump. I was concerned about the work being done in 1 day (this was Friday after all). They told me they'd try and if I hadn't heard from them by 3pm to call them. I wandered around the Pearl district and return to their shop around 1:45. They told me my car would be done in about 20 minutes, provided no other problems became apparent. At a little after 2pm I was on my way home. I can't thank Hendrix Motor Company enough! A mere 4 hours after an emergency stop in their shop, my car was diagnosed, parts procured, repairs completed, paperwork done and I was on my way home. I just left the shop. The old timer I spoke to last Friday said to come by this morning to drop off my Volvo. Didn't say when, but I figure at 9 am Monday morning we're safely within business hours. I opened the door and walked in because the neon sign said "OPEN." A loud chime announced my arrival. The lights were off and there was nobody around. On the interior window sill sat a half smoked blunt. The air was still sticky-sweet from the smoke. To my left was a door labeled "Office." From within I could hear a muffled, rhythmic snoring. From reading other Yelp reviews, I assumed it was a dog. I opened the office door to find not only a snoring dog but a man, passed out in his own filth, hunched low in a recliner, blissfully snoring away. I took a quick peek around the messy office, noting old microwaved dinners on top of piles of paperwork and mixed debris, and decided then that I would not be leaving my car with this shop. I brought my car here when it broke down, and these men were so amazingly fast and kind. When they found out I had been sold a total lemon they were outraged on my behalf, and offered me a ton of ways to try and help my situation. These were gentlemen and true and honest people who were kind to me in a very tough moment. They helped me find someone to buy my car for scrap, (even though it was essentially worthless) and I will always remember their kindness. I would not take my car anywhere else, and once I buy a new car I will ask them to do all the work it might need and have them inspect it before I buy it. These are great people. I've had my oil changed here twice, both of which were convenient, positive experiences. Both times I've dropped my it off in the morning and was able to pick it up in the early afternoon. Dropping it off is as easy as pulling up and parking and letting them know what you need done. (In my case just an oil change.) In my case, I work rather close to the shop, so its doubly convenient. I think the 1st time I went there I interacted with the owner, the second time one of his mechanics. Both were interactions positive, maybe even fun conversations. Another positive is their pricing. We were traveling from N. WA to pick up our daughter from college in Portland. We had plans to spend the weekend touring the area. We picked her up on a Friday morning and spent the afternoon exploring the sights of Portland when our car just broke down. Fortunately my husband was able to pull off the road. He checked for a few obvious problems, walked to an auto parts store to purchase a few things that would have been easy fixes but to no avail. An ODOT person stopped to check on us after we had started calling auto shops to see if they could look at our car. The general response on a sunny Friday afternoon was, "not until Monday." This very kind DOT guy gave us the name of place he took his car to, so we took a chance and called Hendrix to see if they could at least look at the car. They were willing to do so and we got the car towed there. The mechanic spent at least 30 minutes looking at it, diagnosed the problem and while they couldn't fix it until after the weekend, we knew that it was not a quick fix. The owner recommended a rental car place close by and assured us that they would work on it Monday so we could get back home later that day. Our weekend was perfect and we had a great time exploring the Portland area. Monday afternoon the car was repaired and ready for us to pick up. The customer service was exceptional and the service was reasonably priced. I told them that if my daughter returns to school with a car, they will be who she calls if she has any problems. I can't recommend for multiple reasons. I took my Toyota in for a timing belt replacement and tune up. Ground wires for my dash were not tightened and after a few days everything electrical in the car started freaking out and then the car finally died while my wife and I were out of town. After I inspected I found the stud with the wires and saved myself a 100 mile tow. I let that go however, mistakes happen. Then my check engine light came on. I took it back and they simply reset it. The bad on my part was not going back. Flash forward two years the light is still on. I took it to another shop and they told me that timing belt was off a tooth. Oh...I also forgot to mention they left my battery unsecured. I finally called, just to let them know, with out any great expectations. At first they seemed to care and asked about the engine code to presumably confirm what I had told them. I was starting to think they might offer something...I don't know, maybe a free oil change. When I called back and gave them the engine code reading the tone was not as friendly. Surprise! I haven't heard back since. read more

I moved to Portland in 2004 with a 2000 VW Passat and had it serviced by several automotive shops but was not satisfied with any of them. But in 2005 I went to Hendrix and have been going there ever since. I have oil changes about every six months with inspections and some repairs. I don't think they ever did any unnecessary work. My car now has over 100 thousand miles and runs great. I was planing to get a new car at 100 thousand miles but, largely thanks to Hendrix, I think I can go over 200 thousand.
