When on vacation nothing sounds more appealing than a diner for breakfast. We passed Henry's a few times during our trip and decided to have our Sunday breakfast there. It was 11:00am so we expected a wait. It's small and the entry way is smaller. As we tried to approach the desk to get our names on the list we were dodging others as they were leaving amidst the other patrons trying to get on the list. A bit off-putting but we used our patience to our advantage and the 20 minute wait was fine. We waited on the sidewalk and endured a few passing showers with the help of our umbrella. We were seated at the counter. It's the quintessential diner experience. They move food from the kitchen effectively and efficiently. Amazing. Coffee cup was never empty. Biscuits and gravy was excellent eggs were fresh and delicious. Home fries... yum. I prefer my sausage patties a bit more done but they tasted great despite the mush. (I should have specified, my bad!). My wife had a veggie skillet with potatoes and eggs over medium. Nothing to complain about. Fresh well cooked and delicious. $30 for the two of us was right where we expected. Too bad the initial experience was disappointing. Maybe a hostess to take names separate from the cashier would have helped. Just be patient and you will be happy. read more

Wow! I wish I had taken a picture of our food. I seldom do reviews on Yep but this place deserves one. Our breakfast was wonderful! Cooked perfectly and our waitress was extremely friendly. The food here was great. However: We are from out of town and we were spending the day in Burlington. Towards the late afternoon, we were tired and hungry and we saw this cute little diner. What we failed to do was notice that they were closing in 20 minutes. If we had noticed or if the staff had mentioned it, we would have moved on. Instead they seated us and took our order. Then after the food was delivered, our waitress made it a point to declare loudly to someone else in the restaurant how she would NEVER go into a business that was about to close. She went in and on about it for several minutes. My wife felt so bad about it that she didn't even finish her food. If you don't want to serve someone, just don't seat them. It's a great version of your old diner fare. Local ingredients, funky set up, and what you need- damn good food at a decent price. I had a skillet with veggies, Vermont cheddar, and their amazing local biscuit. I do wish, especially since it wasn't too crowded, the water and coffee refills were a bit more often. Ive been here before and it was decently good besides the wait time. However, my boyfriend and I stepped in on a rainy day today and we decided to sit at the counter. Our server asked us 8 times what our order was and after screwing up each time still managed to get it wrong. I understand that is it a busy environment but we had a very simple order. I asked for a coffee three times before they realized that i actually wanted one. We ended up leaving and cancelling our order entirely. This is a pretty solid diner. It's small, but service is quick. Don't expect to be treated like royalty, but expect a smile and a hot and fresh meal. The white toast had a great flavor and you get nice large pieces. The omelette was full of cheese and sausage (it lacked some salt in the eggs, but I'd rather not enough than too much! The homefries were some of the best I had flavor wise but were a little dry. The coffee is perfect diner coffee. The bacon had a peppery flavor that suits a burger better than breakfast, but I mean bacon is bacon! The pancake was fluffy and had a unique flavor, with a slightly cakey flavor. I came to Burlington for a day trip in mid-August, looking forward to a big ol' breakfast at The Penny Cluse. The Bucket 'O Spuds was calling my name! However, after a three hour drive from the Lake George area, I was crestfallen to see that they were on vacation and wouldn't be open again until three days later! *cue dramatic and hangry tears* After stopping for a quick ice tea and muffin at Uncommon Grounds to replenish myself, the beau and I strolled up Church Street, looking for a new dining option. I've been to a few of the restaurants on Church Street in the past with some family that lives outside of Burlington, but I wasn't really in the mood for an overpriced $16 grilled chicken sandwich at an average restaurant with other tourists. I wanted something more memeroble. Just off the beaten path, on Bank Street, Henry's Diner caught my eye. We walked over, took a look at the menu, and I made a beeline for the door. Inside, this historical diner was clad in bright yellow with sunny waitstaff. Shout out to our waitress, Caity, who was an absolute sweetheart and has some of the best writing I've ever seen for a waitress! Ha! I opted for the Bacon & Cheddar Burger, which was mindblowingly delicious! Their liberal use of sharp cheddar by Cabot was appreciated. (I am a Cabot cheese snob! When in Vermont...) The beau got a roast beef and provolone sandwich on rye, which he loved. I took a few bites and it was definitely on point. I'm so glad we stumbled up Henry's! For the rest of the day, all I could talk about was how good my burger was. I think the beau was, like, "Okay...okay...I get it. You liked your burger" Ha! Don't you luv it when you just stumble into a place and discover that it's the bomb? We were staying at the Hilton, walked out and saw this diner. There was a little line outside so we thought hey this place must be good lets check it out. Don't be fooled by the small building exterior, the inside extends way beyond the small outside and it has that old diner feel. Even the waitresses wear those Mel's diner waitress uniforms but they don't come across as campy, they know what they're doing and some of them even call you honey. I knew I hit pay dirt when I saw grits on the menu. I'm a Southern girl and can't seem to find grits worth a darn in the Northeast - until I happened upon this place. I had biscuits and gravy and a side of grits. Both were as good as in Savannah, I thought I had gone to heaven. My boyfriend had the veggie skillet. It came in a personal skillet piled high with grilled potatoes an omlette and fresh veggies. It was a very satisfying meal. This place is a find. I was very disappointed in this place during a recent 3 day weekend in Burlington. A large portion of the blame can be placed on an incompetent wait staff. It's a diner and it's early in the morning, but for some infathomable reason we had to ask for coffee. Ask for coffee? In a Diner? You should be pouring Joe before our butts have hit the seats! This does NOT bode well. We quickly downed our cups, and then we waited for the refill. And waited..... Tick-tock .... Waited some more. Any Diner worth their salt keeps those cups topped off, but this one failed miserably. I heard others around us muttering about it too. Finally I tackled the hostess and got another cup. I can't blame this entirely on our waitress, someone should always walking around with that pot, refilling whoever looks like they need it. I started to suspect that his is bigger than one bad waitress. What we have here is an institutional failure, a cultural meltdown. Denying caffeine to an early morning diner? Wars have been started on less. The actual meal was unmemorable. My SO said the corned beef hash was pretty good. I can't remember what I ordered. All I remember is that I needed more coffee and I wasn't getting any. Those mugs are heavy, thick walls,. they feel great in the hand, do an excellent job retaining the heat. But they don't hold alot of liquid. Mine certainly wasn't. I need to stop right here for a minute and point out how essential coffee is to the diner experience. It's the raison d'etre for going to a Diner. (But don't ever say 'raison d'etre' out loud in a diner, not even one close to Quebec. In fact, in Burlington these days don't say it anywhere. They'll think you are French and tack on 20-something percent on your bill) The ritzy Leunig, located around the corner on the main Church St drag, turned out to be a far, far better experience for about the same amount of money, the following day. The food was better, and we didn't have to get on our hands and knees and plead, Dickens style, for a wee bit more coffee please? It's a pretty sad state of affairs when a fancy place out Joes a diner. If you're doing a short weekend visit you can safely skip this place. There are far better choices. It's too bad, I wanted to like it, and the problems are very easy to fix. If the owner is reading this - sometimes they do - then Bubba, it's the coffee, stupid. The meat was plentiful and the eggs were fluffy. The biscuit was larger than your typical biscuit and served warm. Friends who ordered the Hungry Henry were not able to finish their meal due to its sheer size. Bottomless coffee was a hit with the coffee drinkers and the price was very reasonable for the amount of food we got. This is a Burlington staple for a reason, with many locals and college students enjoying a warm atmosphere. Retro tunes and decor complete the classic diner experience and keep you coming back for more each time. Parking is difficult but there are meters across the street which take credit card. I can't begin to tell you how great this place is!! The first thing that stood out to me was that all the staff were very pleasant and happy. I am talking about in the middle of the Sunday morning rush with the place packed the staff did not let us see them sweat. I will now tell you about the best breakfast I have ever had in my life! I am not exaggerating. The banana pancakes were out of this world! Little pieces of banana cooked in the batter. The pancakes themselves were fluffy and delicious but the sweet bananas just took them to the next level. A side of warmed maple syrup was served with the pancakes. My Husband ordered one of their specialty skillets which had home fries, eggs, corned beef hash and cheddar cheese. Another winner! I wish I lived closer because I would be there every day. My boyfriend and I usually love Henry's but our recent trip on Saturday 12/15 was less than pleasant. We both ordered the Holiday eggs benedict and both sets of our poached eggs were severely overdone. They were essentially hard boiled eggs. This throws the texture of the entire dish and makes it super dry. Also, both of our home fries were noticeable underdone and almost raw. We were trying to narrow down the Yelp-approved lunch choices (Thanks Yelpers!!), and happened upon Henry's. I already had high hopes as we entered this cozy, welcoming spot. I love everything here... From the very authentic 1940's/1950's diner decor, to the Golden Oldies classics softly playing in the background, to the genuinely attentive, kind & very fast service we received. (I also completely loved the variety of food options; you can order breakfast, lunch or dinner items all day!) And the food did NOT disappoint. I had the roast beef sandwich (the roast beef is cooked on the premises), on grilled sourdough. I also (gluttonously) ordered a side of fries (and dipped them guiltily in turkey gravy). Everything was really delicious; the beef was tender & mouthwatering (It would have been perfect if it had been more medium-rare doneness, as opposed to almost well-done.) My sweet husband had the burger club, which he enjoyed every bite of. And really, they're obviously doing something right here. This location has been here since 1925! We really enjoyed Henry's diner, and will definitely be back the next time we're in Burlington. I didn't have room for that strawberry shake this visit! (I obviously highly recommend this diner for the tasty food & great service, but it's also really a terrific option for families, or anyone on a budget that's visiting Burlington. I went to college in Burlington ans as such, tried just about every diner in the metro area (generally sunday morning, often with my hung over friends) and I'd definitely put Henry's in the upper echelon. The food is standard fare, the mimosas are just strong enough, and a few of the waitresses say hon'. It's right off Church St., so if there's a wait you can walk into Urban Outfitters and poke around for a bit, but the line goes fast. There seems to be a bit of some tension between staunch Henry's diners and staunch Oasis diners...and I'm firmly in the former camp. Strawberry milkshake. Definitely the highlight of my meal. The milkshake came to me in 2 containers -- one glass with whipped cream and the rest of it in the tumbler it was "shaken" in. The milkshake had sliced strawberries in it (amazing!) and the whipped cream was definitely homemade (homemade tasting anyway! No Redi-Whip here). I had the open-face turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes. The turkey was tender and juicy. The gravy was a little bland. The mashed was excellent -- creamy and delicious. My partner in crime had the lamb gyro with fries. It was tasty and pretty standard. No big surprises. He also had the chocolate shake - but agreed that strawberry was the way to go. Really quite good! We wandered around Burlington this weekend, on what happened to be peak fall foliage weekend, so lots of long waits at restaurants. There were quite a few people milling about outside Henry's but we found out the wait for two seats at the bar was only 20 minutes. We stopped in the Patagonia store while we waited and passed the time quite nicely. Breakfast here was delicious. I didn't order off the menu but they were very accommodating. A cute cramped little diner right off of Church street. Breakfast was exactly what I expected and they even had some delicious seasonal specials. The pumpkin pancakes my friend got were especially tasty, and my greek omelet was exactly what I needed. Local flavor was added in the form of maple pepper salt, which sounded so unusual we were all a little apprehensive to try it, but it was soon shaken liberally over all of our eggs and home fries. So why only three stars? Well three out of five of my dining companions ordered milkshakes, and the waitress never brought the rest of us ice water till we were finally able to ask as our meals came. In my home state of NJ, the diner capital, that is a major no-no. Ice water comes with the menus! Second, we were in Vermont, a place that seemed to really favor its locally grown products. The perfect breakfast food. If I lived in Burlington, I would be here ALL the time. We drove by on Sunday and there looked like there was a pretty substantial line outside so we ended up skipping it. We went back Monday and we were the only ones there. The waitress was really friendly, service was great. I imagine it probably gets a little crazy on weekends, so I can't speak for service when the going gets tough. It's pretty hard to be a bad waiter/waitress when there is one group of three people in the whole restaurant. They have a selection of several different kinds of "skillets" - I got the Vermonter. Hashbrowns, corn beef hash, cheese, two eggs (over easy for me) and a biscuit. Oh my god. It was phenomenal. Eric got a skillet chock full of meat, and Tom got the Eggs Benny - both said they were really good. The amount of food is great and very generous, I kept eating after I was full because it was so GOOD, and we pretty much had to be rolled out of there. Good food with decent prices. I got the all meat scramble with an orange juice and it cost me less than $10. The scramble had a good amount of meat with two eggs on top and some potatoes on the bottom. It was a good sized portion and also came with 4 pieces of toast! The only problem I had with this place was the entrance. There is barely any room for people to walk by as you wait for seats to open up. Unlike many of the Breakfast places in the Burlington area, Henry's Diner serves typical diner/coffee shop food with quality ingredients. It's a small place in the railroad car format. There was about a 15 minute wait for a table for 2 at 9am on a Saturday morning, but the hostess was friendly and they moved quickly to turn over the tables. Service was prompt once we sat down and coffee was offered right away. I opted for the Vermonter skillet which featured corned beef hash, two eggs, home fries, and cheddar cheese. I'm picky about corned beef hash and Henry's is excellent. It's homemade and meaty. Very little filler. It was nice and crispy as well. The sunny side up eggs were well prepared. Nice runny yolks with tender whites that were not rubbery. The shredded cheddar added some nice depth. My only complaint is about the home fries. The potatoes were cut in a large dice that didn't allow them to crisp enough on the outside and were too firm on the inside. They also need more seasoning. I was able to sample a piece of my cousins bacon (flavorful, thick, well cooked, and not too salty) and his pancake (fluffy and tasty). With tip breakfast for the two of us was $26 so the price is very reasonable. This is not an upscale breakfast but it is quality food in a great setting. read more
