Had my pool and spa replumbed and refinished. It looks and works great. I now have the carefree pool I once had. Everybody loves it. There was a simple problem that was existing before the work began. I had other pool companies try to solve this problem, with no success. After the work was completed, the problem was still there in the area that Herbs' had not touched. within minutes Brian the tech solved the problem and showed me how to keep it running. I have to admit I felt dumb for not having thought of it myself, but the other companies didn't find it either. I couldn't be happier. went to buy conditioner he told me that we do not use conditioner in the rain,he sold me drum of "calcium hardness up 25 lb $72.00." I have a tool room full of the wrong stuff mostly for spas not pools they purposely sell the wrong expensive stuff because they don't have a return policy. They are masters at defrauding costumers . They recommend very costly items and we older people (we are in our 80th,) are being taken advantage of. Do not do business with them there a very oiled bunch of scheisters that talk a mile a minute and didn't let you put a word in. my next step is the better business bureau . I had them build me a new pool and they were fantastic! The permit process in Novato was long and tedious but Tim at Herbs helped us along the way. We have tight access in our yard but they handled it like pros. They have been in business for a long time for a reason. They care about the customer and about doing a quality job. They were great and I'd recommend them. We still have some deck work to do with other contractors but I can update with pictures later. read more

I wouldn't recommend them for spa repairs. I was sold an inferior control panel two years ago, and was charged $175 for a 48 minute service call, with no mention that there was a $15 minimum. The panel still doesn't work properly and I will not be calling them again for repairs. On a related note, their quote for a spa cover last year was $230 higher than their competitor. read more

I called this business to get pricing on purchase and install of a new pool heater. I was told Darren was the person I needed to speak with but that he was busy. I proceeded to leave Darren two voicemails over two days but never heard back from him. Then I waited a few days and spoke with Chuck. Unfortunately, Chuck was claiming that nobody remembers speaking with me even though I had left the previous messages for Darren. Chuck seemed more interested in arguing over whether I actually left the messages. He said Darren would call me back. Then Chuck called back to once again try and state that I had not left any messages. At that point I told Chuck that I wasn't interested in doing business with Herb's since they have proven to have terrible communication and seemingly bad business practices. It's amazing how this business was more interested in telling me what I did wrong before even providing an estimate for what I originally inquired about a week ago. After serval calls to reach them to continue service at our new home. I finally received a call, unapologetically the woman on the phone. I won't name her told me that they had replaced my slot for pool maintenance in my area and had no one to service me. This again after me, reaching out to them on several occasions leaving messages, having been told I was going to receive a call back and the callback was to say they can't help anymore after servicing this pool in this neighborhood for many many years. They were rude and unapologetic and now that I looked at their yelp reviews I'm glad they're not gonna be my pool service. read more

We like Jovel who is our regular service route guy but anything more than the weekly cleaning seems to usually take multiple people coming multiple days adding to total bill when it seems logical to send one qualified person with the necessary parts and tools to do the work during one trip. read more

Herb's Pool Service is unreliable (you never know when they're going to show up), unqualified (the service people seem to know nothing about water chemistry and display zero problem solving skills), unaccountable (they never leave a service report, so you never know who serviced your pool, what time they came, what treatment they gave the water, nor what services they performed, ie: skimming, vacuuming, backwashing, repairs) and, on top of that, the owner (woman) is obdurate, rude, and argumentative, and is incapable of listening. I've had a pool for 37 years and normally don't go to Herbs since I live in Novato. After refilling my pool I needed it tested and chemicals replenished. After testing they recommended about $150 in chemicals which I purchased. After I got home I realized I already had one of the chemicals I bought. The next day I came back to the same sales person who said no problem on the return until the manager said "NO RETURN OF ANY CHEMICALS." He didn't care that this small $20 unopened bag that i bought 24 hours ago. He said it's posted all over the store. He directed me to several locations in the store and sure enough nothing in print about returning chemicals, except for in small print on the receipt. (I believe they now added it) I called my favorite pool store Don Johnson's in Novato and they informed me that they return unopened chemicals. I have to say Herbs does NOT understand customer service. read more

They are the worst. No one seems to be in charge or know what's going on. I know they had management/family changes but that's no excuse for the bad service. Their quotes are unreliable and terribly expensive. I had them take care of a pool at a rental for years and wanted to add my pool and they told me they weren't taking new customers, so I cancelled them. for service. I just bought a new pool cover online for 25% of what Herb's wanted. I've been trying all week to have them install it but no one can give me an answer or call me back. I'm not sure where to even start. I thought about this review quite a bit, and wanted to be fair in my report. We hired Herb's to build a pool for us. We signed the contract in late December 2020. After plans and permitting, we began in June. I was told it would take approximately 3 months to finish. They just finished it - in December 2021. This was not a "fancy" pool that required anything special. They just simply take forever to do anything. To be fair, some delays were due to parts/materials no longer available due to global supply shortage, and when the work finally got done it looked good. But that's it for the good part. Everything else along the way was a nightmare. I would have to constantly call/email/text to get them to do anything. Their communication is beyond bad. When they would come out, I would ask what the next steps were and when it would be completed. Every time I would get "we'll be doing this next and I will get it on the schedule", or "it's on the schedule for next week". And then every time I would follow up and it never got scheduled or they simply wouldn't come when they said they would be there. Then, the extra charges. All the time. "Oh, we didn't tell you that you need a floating pool alarm?" "Oh, we didn't tell you that you need door alarms?" "No problem, we can install those for you". They then charged me almost $700 for it! I had someone else do the excavation because when I called a few days before they were scheduled to come, they tell me their equipment broke and is in the shop and won't be back for at least a couple of weeks. And then I get an invoice that includes the cost of excavation! I had to remind them that they didn't do that part... Our plans called for a drain around the pool per County code. Herb's was obviously provided the plans in order to build the pool. But when it came time to put the drain around, we had all kinds of issues because Herb's didn't realize they needed to do the coping a certain way to accommodate the drain, and wanted to charge me an extra $1,000 because of this. Then, the coping I ordered was going to be months late. We decided to change coping to something similar - of course at a higher price. Then, they no longer had the pool plaster color we ordered, but showed us something similar. I asked about additional cost for what they recommended and was told same cost. Then I get an invoice for a "change order" - more cost for the plaster color we changed to. Lastly, the pool cover. Of course was months late due to shortage of parts. Fine. But they kept giving me dates that it would be ready and then it wasn't. Finally get a call and told it was being shipped and would be delivered the following week. That day we get a call saying they shipped someone else's pool cover and ours was stuck somewhere. After 9+ months of them not communicating, not doing things they could have or should have done, I complained with a list of all the frustrations, and they refused to do anything about it. Actually tried to tell me nothing was their fault. Such terrible customer service. They take no responsibility for anything. I would recommend anyone considering have a pool built to not use this company. read more

It's a shame that someone cannot process manage or apply "customer service" manners when it comes to clients. It is a shame that they have little competition. * Departments that are not connected and don't communicate * Months between quotes and work being done * No notification of any issues when there are problems * Made equipment work worse after "service" * Didn't notify pumps were running dry as pool water was down (and they knew we were away) * Didn't put cover pump on in heavy rain which nearly broke the cover with all the weight * Left the schedule running in "summer mode" while we were gone in winter so our gas bill was $900 for the month * Never an apology for errors or lack of communication - customer is always WRONG with this company I wonder if they look at Yelp? I purchased a vacation home in Dillon Beach with a spa, and I wanted a spring loaded lifter to remove the cover more easily. I called and spoke to the person on the phone and explained what I was looking for. She said they could order that for me and install it. She sent me a contract, and I signed it. Next time I was at the home, I saw a brand new spa cover and no spring lifter. When I inquired why I got a new cover and not the lifter I was told no where in the contract that I signed did it mention a lifter. I had a perfectly good cover. They threw it away and gave me a new cover for $600. So now I'm on the hook for $600 for something I didn't need. They offered to add the spring lifter and give me a discount of $75 off the total price. There were no apologies, just telling me I should have looked at my contract more closely. I should have read both my contract and these Yelp reviews before I engaged with them. read more

Been using them for decades, and the quality of service has gone down, and the prices have gone up. They used to come by, do a good job of removing leaves and sweeping the pool. Now, they come by for a few minutes, and tell us that something is broken so we need to pay for new equipment, etc. Their markups on equipment is insane - I used to self-manage our pool for years, and I never had trouble finding parts for reasonable prices. Nowadays, they just tell me I need something, it's going to cost a bunch of money, and they don't even tell me the part number that I need to get in order to bring the price down. Also, they installed some things, they went bad, and then it was an endless circle of "fixes" that were expensive and finally didn't solve the problem completely. I looked at it, and it was a simple O-Ring that cost $1. I'm now searching for someone better. read more

This place, it's like Jekyll and Hyde. Giving it three stars because the staff in the showroom would get six stars if I could, but the service department? Zero if I could. Showroom staff couldn't be more gracious, friendly, and helpful. Dealing with the service department was top five worst experience I've had in a long time. Been going to them for 20+ years and they gave no craps. Happy to go into the showroom and get water tested, buy chemicals & minor parts, and get advice. I grew up with folks from herbs pool service coming to my parents home here in marin. The guy in the little pick up was always smiling and friendly and played with our dog on the lawn. I had a brand association and was excited to find out they were still in operation. I just moved back to marin as an adult and hired them with a sweet sense of nostalgia. Nightmare! I would have stopped working with them immediately however I kept giving them a chance. Their service person made a mistake of some kind almost once a month. This last time he left my top open with some 'tool' on the side with my kids and pets all around and when I told the owner she acted like a made it up. I called to ask why he did that and I was told he did not. I also never hear sorry. Herbs Pool is no more. These folks represent the death of customer service on every level. This is not my parents Herbs Pool that is for sure. RIP Herbs Pool. read more

I'd bet that these guys are the largest pool service company in marin. I see their trucks everywhere. I've tried to use them exactly twice. First time is shame on them. Second time was shame on... shame on... I won't get fooled again. The first time I called them I had a problem with my heater. I made an appointment. The guy didn't show up, so I left and went to work. Then he finally came by and my wife was there... she doesn't know the first thing about the pool, but she knew the pool heater was broken. So this jerk, walks over to our pool equipment, looks at it for about 30 seconds and says "it's broke. replace it." Then he leaves. $90. Thanks. I followed up with Herb's to try and find out what the deal was and they couldn't tell me. Useless. So I contested the bill... $90 for 30 seconds of works seems like a rip off, especially considering that there was no evidence of their work to be found. But they insisted that I pay the full bill. I year went by and I had forgotten about the incident. Now my booster pump was failing. So I called Herb's and made an appointment, first thing in the morning. My wife found out about it and flipped out, reminding of our previous experience: "HERBS IS EVIL!" But I decided to keep the appointment anyway. The day came when they were to arrive and I waited... and waited... I could be at work. and I waited... after an hour they never showed up. So I called, and told them to forget it. "Would you like us to reschedule?" You have to be kidding. flat-out, Herb's sucks. I tried Don Johnson's Pool Service instead and they have been prompt, complete and courteous. read more

After 3 years my Hot Tub started having heater problems. Herbs helped me troubleshoot the problem on the phone and THEN ordered the part for me! It was my fault by not correctly balancing the chemistry... TOTALLY my fault! No other service company would even talk to me, they all wanted a service call. I completed my own heater repair for $35. Other companies were telling me $300-$400. Herbs staff had plenty of patience with me and i appreciate the help and knowledge. read more

I had a very good experience with Herb's Pool Service. The union on my Salt Water Chlorinator cracked, and was allowing my pool to lose water. After shutting down my system, my present pool service company was unable to fix the problem in a timely fashion. I called Herb's as they are a multi-service company. In spite of a very heavy schedule with their current clients, Rick Gustin was able to diagnose the exact problem. He sent two very nice men, Peter and Marcus to my home. They were quickly able to put the pool back in good running order, allowing the filtration and solar to function properly again. read more
