Duck confit, so good!! Scone and scrambled eggs topped with shredded duck.

Had a wonderful brunch by Grant and June today. Grant is going with a whole duck confit leg and thigh for the Herbst brunch plate and it is so good. You get the crispy skin with the tender duck meat. Doll had the scrambled eggs topped with the shredded duck, she loved it. It is so enjoyable to sit at the kitchen counter and chat with the chefs, June is the newest to join the team and he fits in quite nicely. And if you are lucky, you can taste some fantastic ice cream made by June. Today it was a tomato, balsamic vinegar and vanilla! It was excellent!!! So creamy and so good! Who would have thought of this mixture?

Herbst is a truly great brunch experience. Such a light and bright ambiance with a limited but incredible artistic and high quality menu. We enjoyed our meal so much we were each almost licking plates. The waffles with the duck are famous but the vegetarian version was truly amazing as well. My breakfast risotto I am still trying to recreate and cannot but good risotto takes talent, which is endless here. The thick cut glazed bacon again - outstanding. I believe the chef came from Spoon and Stable and James Beard level talent is apparent here.

I have been here twice now and had very different experiences both times. The first time everything was wonderful food was great and service was on point. The second time it was a big miss. I felt on the second and most recent visit the server was a bit standoffish. Also the food we had was not hot. I did notice that it looked like they don't have enough heat lamps and the food did not come out at the same time. I will say that the drinks we had were great and the U shaped bar is appealing. After such different experiences I feel this would be a place I come for drinks and apps and just sit at the bar.

Herbst is such a cute and beautiful restaurant in St. Paul. The food is beyond delicious and the service was top tier friendly!

An all around absolute delight!! I am amazed at how under-reviewed this place is- I cannot recommend it highly enough!! Herbst uses a rotating seasonal, farm-to-table approach- and everything was so fresh and unique. We decided to do it Tapas style so we could try lots of things- which was the move!! The Fried Chicken we had was unanimously deemed the best chicken any of us have had... maybe ever. It had a pickle brine and topping... I can't stop thinking about it. In addition to the beautiful food the staff was attentive and helpful, and the dining area was so cute!!

Herbst seems to have good values as far as the idea of farm to table style fine dining and making dishes based off seasonal produce, yet I found the execution to be very underwhelming. I've worked and have eaten at many fine dining restaurants over the years and felt really disappointed by overall flavor, portions and price point for their menu selections. I ordered the duck breast and it is the smallest yet most expensive duck I have had in a while. Staff were kind and accommodating but our waitress was extremely awkward and impatient to not seem to understand my mom was deaf despite me mentioning this to her and that it was her birthday and they offered nothing either to celebrate... all portions of the food were super small and really over priced compared to other fine dining spots I've had in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. I do not see myself returning in the future.

Snap peas - get these, had a surprising flavor that I I enjoyed

Came here for a work dinner before heading to a play nearby together. The farm to table concept is really great, the ambiance was light and open, a little upscale but not too fancy. The server was nice and I really appreciated the ways they could make things vegetarian and GF by putting things on the side. My fav part of the meal was my drink, get these Low ABV under sustainable! It was tasty & on the sweeter side & I really enjoyed it so it's a must-get. My must-get food recommendations would be the snap peas which tasted bright w/ lots of flavor & the grilled focaccia. The risotto was pretty good too & I'm stealing the idea of putting pomegranate seeds in there as I liked that contrast. I didn't care as much for the sea bass w/ fennel and thought the other things were not bad but not wow (ricotta toast, salad, pork rillette, fried chicken, carrots, or potatoes). If I was dining w/ more meat eaters, I would've liked the try the ravioli but I'm glad I came here and got to try so much of the menu. Note that you can tell your server when you need to leave and they can accommodate that with the cooks. I appreciated being able to do that and overall had a pleasant meal.

I surprised my wife to dinner at Herbst to celebrate her retirement. The room was spacious and beautiful. We started off with a bottle of Gruner Veltliner and it was crisp, clean and delicious. We ordered the Buratta with peas as a starter and followed our server's, Ella, suggestion and ordered some bread to accompany it. So glad we did. The dish was wonderful and the bread helped soak up all the sauces and goodness left behind. Delicious bread on its own as well. We also had the Roasted Asparagus with a sauce like a bernaise accompanying it. Very tasty. My wife had the Halibut and was thrilled with the taste and how well it had been prepared. I had the Herbst Fried Chicken which was flavorful and so crispy. It was topped with herbs, pistachios and more. It came with a few delicious house pickles as well. Needless to say we left with 2 takeaway boxes and enjoyed both for lunch today. Next time we will bring friends to experience all that Herbst has to offer including the dessert menu.

Had an amazing 5 course dinner here through a dining club Tbh this place was never on my radar but blew me away with the quality of food and service Love that's it's a farm to table restaurant using local ingredients They have some delicious menu items and an interesting drink menu which goes from low proof to high proof or n/a I only had wine which was fine but the cocktails looked good form what I could see at the bar The decor and ambiance is perfect too- def add this to your list of date nights!

It's a really cool vibe in this place. We sat at the bar, and instead of being at the side (in a corner) it felt like we were in the premier spot. The staff was really nice and helpful. The prawns was the best thing we had. Not tough or overcooked, and the sauce will have you loicking the plate afterwards. The drink menu was really interesting. It's not traditional cocktails, but instead flavor profiles that you pick from and select the proof (how much alcohol is present). It's a really interesting way to view the menu. It's a bit confusing, but I really like the intent behind this creativity. The drinks were amazing. It's little expensive, but I really enjoyed myself.

First time at Herbst- I was beyond impressed! Very cute and cozy atmosphere inside. I ordered the Granato Risotto and it waz SO amazing from the smart choice of grain that kept texture in a risotto style cooking to the scored trumpet mushrooms, every part was delicious. We got the potatoes and foccacia on the side, both very good. The potatoes were topped with a rye crumble, creme fraiche and a potato relish which was all unbelievably tasty. We finished with one of the best espresso martinis I have ever had and a delicious olive oil cake. We will ABSOLUTELY be back. Incredible cooking and great service!

If I were to discover a secret restaurant on an unassuming street with Michelin-star creations of bliss in a state that doesn't even offer the Michelin guide, I found it here. We two couples had the most delightful server but I regret forgetting her name because she deserves all recognition. She made successful recommendations every single time, including guiding us in choosing our foo-foo drinks. And bravo to the mixologist. (Fun fact: cocktails are offered in full proof, half proof, or no proof in terms of alcohol content. Mocktails were excellent according to my niece.) We decided to get several plates and share, which included the ricotta toast, duck dumplings, and entree duck. Far and away my favorite was the ricotta toast; let's just make this my entree. The caviar on top was wonderfully complementary to its other flavors. The duck dumplings were nicely crisp and good but didn't wow me. The other duck (entree) was excellent, although one person at the table didn't care for the rather rare consistency under the layer of fat that is characteristic of how it's usually prepared. Calories be damned, we ordered two amazing desserts: the manjari pot de créme with pomegranate and white chocolate. Lovely! Probably the best I've had. On to the date cake with streusel and diced, brandy apples and a dollop of some kind of sublime sour cream concoction. The latter was our group's fave. If it doesn't sound good to you, I'll prove you wrong here. I don't normally even like date/spice cake. Btw, the facade of the restaurant is hipster, artsy, and cool (we didn't notice the neon love note above the front door until it had gotten dark outside). The inside has super cool and interesting details and furnishings.

A few notes to set the scene I went today for lunch on a lovely 70 degree Spring day after getting a haircut across the street to check some work emails, grab a beer and quick lunch to go order. Full disclosure: I'm slightly biased bc I grew up about a mile away and just moved home recently, so any cool vibey place in the old neighborhood has a special place in my heart. That said, it has a very cozy/hip neighborhood feel and understated sophistication for what is a pretty residential and quiet area of St Paul The 5/5 elements... Scott (who I think may be the owner?) is super cool, was serving/tending bar and running around to manage the patio while chatting me up & giving great recs on beer/food based on my half hearted description while I multi tasked on work nonsense. Awesome guy, and reason enough to check this place out The vibe/softly playing music and entrancing Twin Cities flyover footage playing in the background on the TV at the bar was oddly soothing Ordered brisket tacos, brussels sprouts, and fried chicken sandwich for myself + a friend to go. Yamahama, I'm not gonna cheat and double check the menu, but the brussels have a delicious umami flavor from either duck fat or facsimile that perfectly balances the acid from the balsamic/vinegar situation. Fried chicken sandwich is a KILLER, highly recommend. What a vibey place, the lights aren't too bright, it gives a hip, fun, light energy and is not too pretentious but has INCREDIBLE FOOD AND DRINKS. Right now, one of their specials is whitefish toast.. if you enjoy fish at all, you need this. The fish is light and fresh, they put fresh dill on top and it is placed on top of some toasted sourdough bread perfectly. The fish is flavorful, a lil earthy and I feel as if there are capers or olives in in the fish mixture, whatever it is is fire! The burrata, beets, and citrus is a nice lovely, fresh, light app, the burrata is perfection with the beets and fresh, juicy citrus, drizzled with some oil and random pieces of garlic mixed in, YUM. The housemade ranch is a perfect dipper. The other day I tried the chorizo and scallops... oh my goodness gracious.. it was a lil spicy and creamy with the bean puree and the scallops were buttery, light and divine! 10 outta 10 would do again. Finally, got the goat cheesecake, gluten free ginger snap crust with poached pears. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I want this now and in every lifetime! The cheesecake was light, yet decadent, deep, creamy with a light, unassuming flavor. The crust was delicious and the poached pears added that perfect fruit component. Prices seemed a tad steep but frankly, given the quality of the drinks I'd say quite worth it. I started out with the Evita, a nice flavorful gin-base cocktail topped with a nice egg white foam. Came here for a date night, I got the Broiled Miso Salmon and one glass of wine and my partner got the Steak Frites and a coke. Our bill was $95! Ouch. The bad: If it were really really good I would be willing to pay for it, but I felt that the flavors in my dish, in salmon, carrot ginger sauce, and cauliflower, were whispering at best. I think the cauliflower could have used a sauce or been crispier, it just seemed boring and soggy. The steak and fries also came out cold :( my partner really knows his steaks and was not impressed, it was over cooked for medium rare and it had clearly been sitting too long. Not worth the $38! The good: The space itself is decorated really well, it's pretty dark but the theme comes together really nicely. I personally enjoyed the indie/pop music they had playing and it wasn't too loud. I really enjoyed the Chardonnay ($16) and they had a decent selection of wine but only a handful were by the glass. You can get glasses of by the bottle wines if you commit to getting at least two glasses though which is good to know. For me, the service really saved this review, our server was so nice and friendly, attentive but not overbearing. I would maybe grab a drink and an appetizer here sometime but will definitely hold out on dinner again until their prices chill or the food gets better. ‍ TLDR: Too expensive for the food quality

Since I don't drink alcohol, I opted for one of their zero-proof cocktails, the St. Agrestis Phony Negroni. It had a subtle hint of pineapple, but the drink itself was a bit too strong for my taste. We also tried their new Irish Spice Bag, but unfortunately it wasn't a favorite. The dish was a little bland, and the curry sauce could have used more seasoning. Overall, this place just wasn't the right fit for my personal tastes, but I can definitely see it appealing to those who appreciate sophisticated cocktails and an upscale, stylish atmosphere.

Unbelievable. This place is truly magical…read more It has such a perfect mix of a relaxed, chill vibe while still feeling elevated enough to dress up and make a night out of it. The space itself is beautiful with a really cozy ambiance, and the patio is a great option when the weather is nice. The drinks are absolutely the star of the show. You can tell there is so much intention behind both the flavors and the presentation. The cocktail menu is super creative, and the Old Fashioned menu alone is phenomenal with so many unique options. The Beorn Old Fashioned was my favorite. We also tried the Payanello (pineapple, lime, ginger, pickled jalapeño) and it was incredible. Food was fantastic as well. The brussels sprouts were so good and a must order. Service was amazing. Our server was so kind, helpful, and gave great recommendations, which made the whole experience even better. It is on the pricier side, especially for drinks, but honestly worth it for the quality and experience. Reservations are easy to make and I would definitely recommend booking ahead. Parking was manageable when we went, but I could see it getting tricky during busier times. Overall, such a beautiful, thoughtfully done space with incredible drinks, great food, and top tier service. A perfect spot for a night out or just grabbing a cocktail and soaking in the vibe.
