If you ever have a rodent issue, John at Heritage Pest Control is your go-to guy. Some months ago, John rearranged his busy schedule to come out (in pouring rain!) to assess possible rodent activity at my home at no charge. After investigation, he determined questionable if any infestation and provided valuable, preventive recommendations to mitigate any potential issues going forward. Fast forward to last month when we had the need for another exterminator (termites) to examine our property, including under our home. This company came back with assessment that we not only had termites (valid) but also had a rat infestation as well(!). As a result, they tried to 'push' a very expensive and prolonged 'contract' that would supposedly fix the problem. This assessment was totally contrary to what John had previously determined and called him back out for a recheck. He promptly came out for another inspection, found no active rodent evidence but sealed up any potential, entry points just in case. We were blown away by what he charged for his service when compared to what the other company was asking. Can now rest easy that our home is tight as a drum as a result of John's service and won't be scammed (and scared) into contracting with other companies for any bogus services. And to top it off, he later stopped by our home (unsolicited!) to make sure we continued to be rodent free. Our HOA hired John Crist, owner of Heritage Pest Control, because we had a complex rodent problem. We had roof and burrowing rats coming from the neighboring commercial businesses. We contacted different companies. John gave us the best quote by far with a warranty of 1 year. John performed an excellent exclusion job (no use of poison) by closing all points of entries to the buildings, setting traps, and obstructing all existing tunnels in the ground. John never fail to come back regularly to remove the dead rodents from the traps or closing up new tunnels in the ground. We are very pleased with John who also took the time to educate our community on the do's and don't s to keep rodents away. My landlord originally sent someone ELSE to treat some silverfish in my apartment, but I wasn't happy with the work and found Heritage through a recommendation. Because my neighbors probably haven't had their units treated, it hasn't been perfect after a year, but John came back and gave me a discount (and apologized about the silverfish not going away). However, the probably is SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER than before and when I do see them, they're dead or stunted. The treatment John uses is colorless and odorless. Nothing gets pass John (proprietor of Heritage Pest Control) because he knows the way of the rat (or mouse). John is the ultimate professional at a very reasonable price. He came with his crew (in a tiny unmarked white van), discreetly took care of the problem with minimal fuss and shared his knowledge of exterminating pests freely. Unlike the big guys (Clarkes, Orkin) who makes you sign big contracts and parks their names in front for all to see that you got a problem. Or those other wannabe big guys who do NOT answer calls, calls back only at their OWN convenience and tell you that they're really REALLY really busy. If you have a metal roof and a continual problem with rats in the attic or crawlspace, this is the business to call. I had a heart-stopping quote and inspection from another business (they checked out the attic, crawlspace, & outside), but after John's visit I knew he and his co-workers were the ones that would solve the problem once and for all. It did take a while for him to call me back because he was so busy. He and his crew only spent time outside investigating and told me all that needed to be done (and why). He said that he spent a day with metal roofers to understand how they put the roof on and found that they use nails (cost savings) when screws would stop the problem from happening in the first place. His work is guaranteed for a year and they will remove the rats caught in the traps that they set. Now I just need to find a company that will remove the rat activity, which would cause the value of your house to go down if found during a buyer's inspection. read more

I would not use Heritage again. I would not even hint that anyone else should use them. They did seal many possible points of entry for rats, but not all. Their trap did catch one rat, but they did not respond (i.e., answer my messages) to further rat noises. After the trapping and disposal of 18 more rats (BY ANOTHER COMPANY) and sealing of several more likely entry points, the infestation might be over. read more

I need to update my last review due to my latest disappointing experience with John. I had set up an appointment for a Friday with him to give me an estimate for rat proofing my in-laws house in Palo Alto. Well, he stood them up, never showed and never bothered to call me that day to let me know what was up. I was furious. These are my 82 year old in-laws that waited around and then had to leave due to other appointments they had. I called his landline and left him numerous messages. He finally got back to me on Sunday and basically said that he got caught up at other jobs. Whaaaaattttt? And you don't call to let me know that? I did end up using him because my husband went over and met the crew and even though the bid was outrageous my husband signed on. He felt like since the crew was there he'd go ahead and agree to the ridiculous price, keeping in mind that his parents' house had rats' running around and his parents had barricaded themselves in their bedroom. In other words he felt like Heritage Pest had him by "the short hairs." I'm disappointed because I was a repeat customer for John but I gotta' be honest and say I won't use him again. You'd think he could've given me some kind of break because of his no show and not calling me later in the day to let me know what had happened, but it appears to me he's got plenty of business and certainly doesn't need mine. And when I say an outrageous price I mean exactly that. Like a lot more than I paid for a two bedroom apartment to be painted and the painters' were there for three days and did a beautiful job. If you're going to decide to use him make sure you get bids from other companies because there are definitely other pest control companies out there. read more

A cloud of hornets/yellow-jackets swarmed out of a small shrub I was watering. Unlike paper wasps, these guys, who live in the dirt, are very aggressive. I agree John should be rated 10 out of 5. He gets rid of those rats from my house. This is the 3rd time I hired someone to capture those little things (1st time in a town house, the other 2 times in this house.) Here's how most other pest control companies work if you call them. They will come to your home, fix the holes and set up the trap the first time. Then they come back 3 more times to check the trap, typically 1 week apart and no guarantee after their work is done. Here's how John works. He fixes the holes, set up the trap. This is almost the same, except John checks and fixes more carefully. Then he gives you a written 1-year warranty. Now you have to work with him. If you notice any rats activities, call him. If you hire handy man to fix something in your house, call him to recheck. John tells you what to do. I had a tough rats problem this time. But I'm lucky I have John. He came back about 10 times. He fixed a few holes detected after the first visit. Now I don't hear rats any more. He only charged me extra when he fixed a 4-feet crack in my foundation. It was in a corner covered by a sheet and wood chips. Best of all, John's price is very reasonable, competitive. His quote is lower than other services I used, not to mention his 10 out of 5 signature service. I feel he's ready to help me any day. Here's why other companies' approach doesn't work. It's impractical to expect anyone to find out all possible entries in a single inspection. They could be anywhere in your house, roof, foundation, crawl space, etc. The hole only needs to be about the size of a quarter (or slightly larger.) Second, after holes are fixed, the rats typically dig a new one. They are very persistent. They are very determined to get into the house. OK, so much for now. I'm typing a review, not a book. I hope it helps you understand why you should hire John for pest control problems or at least rats problems. I really appreciate John's work. I wish him the best. read more

John is outstanding at his job, a longtime MV resident, and one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. I have seen his work in detail at a girl's outdoor adventure camp in the Santa Cruz mountains, where he and Jenny volunteer, at their own expense, for a week each summer. Hundreds of campers and volunteer staff depend entirely on John to get rid of mice, wasps, spiders, and other bugs at this heavily used facility every year. I was impressed with his 1. knowledge -- for example, identifying beneficial and non beneficial insect nests; 2. food and kid-safe approach -- for example, using exclusion, glue traps, and extreme cleaning to control pests; and 3. phenomenal work ethic. I hired Heritage pest control back in Nov 2016 after reading the Yelp 5 star reviews which is why I feel I need to post about my negative experience with them. When I first called, John came out and said that we had to have our tile roof's hips and ridges re-cemented before he would agree to work on our house as it was an easy entry point for rodents. Since I knew the original cementing was failing in places this made sense and our roofing company came out and did a shadow cement on the entire roof ($$$$). After that, John agreed to work on the roof. His guys were always polite and prompt. On the initial visit in November 2016 they checked inside the attic, crawlspace, and outside on the roof. The identified areas of concern and went about rodent-proofing the roof. I had to call them out at least once a month due to return of rats in the attic. They only worked on the outside of the house adding more spray foam or metal from that first visit on. Fast forward to May 2017. John started getting confrontational in conversations blaming the persistence of the rats on the roofing company not cementing the ridges adequately. My roofing company (they have been great!) came out and could not find any issues but added some extra metal in a few places "just in case." We continued to have a rat highway and I continued to put up with John complaining that my tile roof was too difficult. He finally said he could not send his guys out anymore despite the fact that he gave me a guarantee that they would work until the rats were gone. He also stated that he would not work on tile roofs anymore. I decided not to confront him further on his guarantee as my roof now looked ugly in spots with large amounts of spray foam sticking out here and there plus I was not enjoying the constant complaining from him every time I had to call. I also felt that, while he failed to hold up his guarantee, his guys did come out multiple times for rats so they had earned their money. Maybe I was too easy on them, I don't know. Bottom line, I called another company out and they came in, found two enormous holes right where Heritage had been working as well as a third hole in the attic (had nothing to do with the tile roof for the record), sealed them up from the inside of the attic and guess what? NO MORE RATS!! Plus, they charged me the same amount as Heritage and gave me a 5 year guarantee. I waited for 6 months after the second company came out to write this to make sure that their fix actually did work before commenting on Heritage's work. So I would say beware of Heritage if you have a difficult roof. Based on all the 5 star reviews I'm sure they do good work in general, and his guys are great, but they clearly were not up to my roof. I gave two stars instead of one because his guys were really great. read more

I was very impressed by John's excellent service. He was highly gracious in answering all of my questions on the phone, but also noted that the treatment would differ wildly based on the pest, and that it was best to obtain a specimen. Once I did, I called him at 11 am, and he answered that he could come by 2-3 pm of the same day. He also quoted me a price of $75-$100 for a flea treatment, which is very reasonable and fair. John arrived at 2 pm sharp, and although I had to make him wait (my fault for not expecting him so soon, as I'm used to time intervals meaning the last number!), was nevertheless patient and friendly while I moved my belongings. He also explained to me in detail how to avoid the problem in the future, and did a thorough job in spraying the place, also warning me about the slippery floors. After reading the Yelp reviews I decided to give Heritage Pest Control a shot at my pest problem. Not only did John take the time to educate me on the reality of pests in our neighborhood but he offered me suggestions on how to get rid of the pests and what to do to mitigate their reappearance. I offered to have him do the work (screening some vents, etc) but he told me that I could do it and no need to pay him for something relatively easy to do. All this was done as a courtesy. I called John because I was having Ants in my townhome. He was so helpful - told me exactly what to use (Terro) and insisted I follow up with my HOA as they needed to spray outside along with my baiting inside. The amazing part is he insisted that him coming and spraying would be a waste. I would not recommend John at all. One star is even bad for him, i do not even want to give him a single start. First of all he did not bring the correct raid while he came for spray even though he was well aware of my roach problem and he scheduled another day to bring the correct raid control. He is very rude and does not talk if any exception occurs. I had used his service, He was good in the beginning and he guaranteed that I will get rid of the roaches in a month. After a month I still saw the roaches and I notified him and scheduled for another spray and unfortunately we had to cancel the appointment due to some personal reason for next 30 days. After that we called him and scheduled another appointment and upon arrival he said he will charge as now the 30 days warranty has over and the reasoning he gave is that it is a common practice and i should know about his policy. He never mentioned about his policy to me and his expectation was i should know. After which i tried and i told him also about my personal reason and asked him that these kind of exceptions can occur and it was not something the he was not notified at all. I called him well in advance for cancelling the appointment. Now he rudely left by saying he can not do it with the consideration of 30 days warranty. I tried calling him and he is not even picking up my phone now. In short: He is rude, he does not respect your personal reasons, his grantee fails and false promises to make customer happy, does not prompt to bring the correct raid control. I would recommend go with another pest control who has better reviews. I was initially impressed by his past reviews but now i will never recommend. read more
