Updating my rating!! I have been meaning to return for a while and restaurant week posed a perfect opportunity. The service was excellent and they were very accommodating of a semi last minute reservation rescheduling! I ordered the crispy meatballs (freakin AMAZING), the brisket, and the flourless chocolate cake. My fiancé did the charcuterie board, pork duo, and caramel profiterole. Again the crispy meatballs were to die, they had the perfect crunch and were garnished with some cilantro, pickled red onion, and some seasoned oil and were *chefs kiss*. My brisket was very fatty and I'd didn't get a whole lot of meat but besides that the flavors were classic and spot on. If I could go back I would've ordered the pork duo for myself because the flavors paired with the red cabbage sauerkraut situation were just a home run in my eyes! The caramel profiterole was a dream. The flavors all were scrumptious and it was perfect split between the two of us (we took my chocolate cake to go). (4.5/5) Went for Restaurant Week 2022. We've eaten at Heritage previously, but hadn't been back in a while. The service was impeccable. For the first course, we got the charcuterie board and meatballs. The charcuterie board was good, but so sparse (maybe because of Restaurant Week limitations?). The meatballs, however, were so good! Crispy and flavorful. We also added a side of deviled eggs and pork belly/ tuna sashimi. The pork belly was a bit too salty. The deviled eggs selection (3 flavors) was good; 2 were okay, but the one with the wasabi tobiko was really, really awesome. For the second course, we got the pork duo (schnitzel and sausage) and the bouillabaisse. Both were well-seasoned. The bouillabaisse was so light and the seafood tasted fresh. Totally would come back for the bouillabaisse. Last course, we got the pear sorbet and caramel profiterole. Both were solid desserts. The maple ice cream with the profiterole was so creamy. Came in for a debut brunch along with my folks on a Saturday morning right at opening time, 930am. This place is really nifty inside. Classic modern looks and vibe with a long polished bar side with tables and another half with just tables thats a bit more laid back and quite I am sure during busy times. Bigger inside then you'd think from the outside. Open kitchen view from the entrance side/ bar side of the tavern so you see all the dishes plated on the lights before being grabbed and shot out to the floor for customers. Watching them take time to make sure the little details on each plate was spot on was really cool to see such care go into each plate and how much the kitchen cares to assure each plate is done right. We got our plates pretty quick after ordering but we were also first ones in so.....plates looked great and were great. I did not try the other plates my folks got but they sure seemed to enjoy theirs as well. My steak was medium rare and done perfectly. Salad had a nice house dressing of oil and citrus and the best part was the fried soft boiled egg with a running yolk still inside. 2 of them! How they can boil and egg, fry it and not break it or cook the yolk is beyond me but I liked it. Looked like a fried potato ball at first....I was wrong! I also got a side of artisan toast (wheatberry) with house made raspberry jam and that was darn good also. My mom also enjoyed her traditional house bloody mary quite a bit and she loves a good bloody! Hostess and waiter alike were awesome, kind, professional and even funny. He knew all the menu details and was sure to let me know what did or did not have dairy in it after telling him of my lactose issues. As much as we were intrigued about the daily specials and some other sweet treats we declined but must try them some other time as they sounded amazing! Portions are a hair bit on a the small side IMO but you also get quality over quantity here being its all local, farm-to-table, real food ingredients your eating. The quality of the food provides the flavor alone with little to no doctoring. Going back for winter resto week for sure to try more goods from Chef Dan Fox. read more

Enjoyed a lovely evening at Heritage Tavern for Restaurant Week! We ordered drinks and 3 courses from the pre fixe menu. My husband and I each got something different so we could try a bit of. everything. For starters: duck confit toast and summer corn chowder. I recommend the duck confit - it was delicious and savory! The soup was amazing, but I was very disappointed in the portion size, the soup barely covered the bottom of the bowl, only 5 spoonfuls of soup. Entrees: Coup du jour and the salmon. Both excellent, you can't go wrong with either! The salmon was cooked perfectly and the white wine sauce was superb. Desserts: Chocolate cake and the coconut mango sorbet. The chocolate cake was fluffy and decadent, love the nutty topping. The coconut sorbet was perfect for summer - the hint of mango, mint, and chili was a lovely touch that really brought the dessert to life. Overall, service was wonderful, very attentive and helpful staff. Excellent meal, left me wanting more soup ;) read more

The service was incredibly slow, the food is very overpriced and for the first time ever, I returned a cocktail that was just not drinkable. The bouillabaisse is bland, the chef du hour steak was okay (but $38 and small). By the time we were ready to order, I was so annoyed and I just wanted the meal to be over so I ordered the beet salad (average at best). The lovely Pam M. suggested this place for brunch and I could not have been happier. It was a great time with friends and the food was phenomenal. I took a chance on the maple lamb sausage savory toast because I wasn't sure if I would like it, but it was so delicious. The maple lamb sausage was the best I have ever had. The dressing on the side salad was really good too. The savory toast came with fried poached eggs and those were a treat - lightly breaded and fried but the yolk was still runny! Must be magic. I liked the bacon bloody Mary as well. We also shared the donuts with espresso-coffee ganache and those were unbelievable. Perfect doughy consistency and a crunchy cinnamon/sugar coating. The charcuterie board is far superior to most with excellent house-made items. The meal was excellent, really top notch - BUT - why is everything so LOUD?!? Recent studies show that such noise damages hearing, especially for those who work in such environments. There are new techs to help make things quieter. Their old fashioned ham sandwich was so delicious. My boyfriend and I walked in just to try that. He told me he had it once with his friends and he kept telling me how delicious it was. So even though we had dinner just before we walked in Heritage Tavern (HT), I had no problem stuffing myself with an old fashioned ham sandwich! Since we both just ate, we only ordered one to share. OMG, this sandwich is pretty big! I don't think I could have finished it even if I haven't had any food before coming in to this restaurant. It was so delicious that I don't know what else to say than that. Super delicious, the "old fashioned ham" was so soft and melted in my mouth. I was told that they make their own ham or jamon. That's probably why it was so different from other places. The ambiance of HT is very casual and yet very hipster if you know what I mean. Not too bright inside as there's minimal lighting inside and is dimmed. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar since we were just going to eat the sandwich and leave. The booths/tables looked very comfortable but I was totally fine sitting at the bar just observing the bartender. Parking can be hard since its street parking but they do have a structure nearby. You have to pay but when it's COLD and can't find parking, I really don't mind paying for parking honestly. I would like to try other great food on their menu next time I visit but until then, their OLD FASHIONED HAM SANDWICH gets a two thumbs-up from me :) read more

Exceeded my expectations!! Made a reservation for my birthday - was greeted with a glass of bubbly, personalized menus, and the best booth in the house (IMO). Not only that, but the food was amazing. Highly recommend the dozen assortment of deviled eggs - a classic with a twist and some high end ingredients. Also ordered the steak tartare which was amazing. Heritage Tavern never disappoints. Every single time I've been the quality and experience has remained excellent. I haven't had their brunch yet so I'm so happy they brought it back. Must try's are their burgers, deviled eggs, and any of the main/family style plates. Don't sleep on their drinks too - their bartenders are happy to bring you something unique and tasty. Perhaps one of the few places downtown with a wide variety of NA options. Definitely recommend for happy hour, casual dinner, or special occasions. read more

Came here for brunch on a Saturday morning. We came right at opening (10) and we were the first there. The menu is pretty small; I am not sure if that is because of COVID or not. However, all the dishes we ordered were tasty. My favorites were the egg dishes: lobster scramble and ham omelet. Something about the way the eggs were cooked...it melted in the mouth and was incredible. The fries were also amazing. I loved the dips for them as well. The French toast and the special of the day (a type of whole meal or flax type pancake - can't remember exactly) were both solid but not as amazing. read more

Absolutely brilliant. I cannot recommend Heritage Tavern enough. The flavors are bright and bold and the presentation was beautiful as well. Chef Dan Fox creates magic in the kitchen-- my meal here was so much more than a meal. Truly an experience. I came here for restaurant week and was blown away. I think they have the prime rib (if not get whatever meat they have-- it was cooked perfectly and that CRUST. Delicious.) and I know the profiterole is on the regular menu as well and I WILL be back for them. Desserts at restaurants rarely leave me this impressed, but this one was a 10/10. The first time was during restaurant week over winter; this time, I had the pleasure of trying the restaurant week menu for the summer season. I started the evening with the Crispy Head Cheese & Escargot with a side of El Medico cocktail. For the main course, I went with the Peppercorn and Mushroom Crusted Striploin and Braised Beef then ended the evening with the infamous Profiterole dessert. Stopped in here for brunch while traveling through Madison on our way up to the Dells. We chose the Heritage Inn because they have the most interesting and creative menu that we could find. I decided on the lobster scramble after a long decision. It comes with a croissant which really tipped the scale in its favor. I love a good croissant! The scramble was good. The eggs were nice and soft and delicate. I would have expected it to be rich and heavy but it really wasn't. My only complaint is that there really wasn't much lobster in it. I didn't count but I think I only encountered three. Staff was terrific! Everyone was really friendly and helpful. When we were escorted to a table near the back and asked for something closer to a window (it was already a dark gloomy day), they didn't bat an eye and offered a really nice table for two by the window in the bar area. read more

A group of us went to Heritage Tavern for a year end dinner. The staff is excellent, friendly, attentive and professional. I had the bouillabaisse which was rich in complex seafood flavors on a chilly night. The appetizers were very inventive. I recommend the deviled eggs (no really, try them) and the pork belly. Eclectic wines by the glass were thoughtfully available. It has an old tavern feel with upscale quality. I also like the cool art on the walls throughout. They weren't amazing but they were very good and we would do it again. Our main courses were also very good (I had a steak and my wife had one of the salads). Service was good but not great. Five star hands down. The service was impeccable and every bite we had of our 2 small plates and 1 large plate was spectacularly delicious. We started with (I am sorry I don't remember the exact fancy names of the menu now) fried cheese curds and sweet potato with 3 different sauces and pork belly. Both had enough bites for three of us to share. For our large plate, we went with pork schnitzel and bratwurst. We ended our meal with the most delicious Carmel profiteroles. Everything we ate was made to perfection and I recommend them all but if u only get to pick one- it had to be hands down the Carmel profiteroles (fancy name for ice cream sandwich). We had heard from other Yelpers what a great place the Heritage is and that they have a good happy hour. So the first chance we had we stopped in for the 4-6pm happy hour at the bar, Monday-Friday. We ordered a couple of their appetizers at discounted prices - the ham sandwich with cheese was very good and the bun fantastic. The candied bacon and nuts was decadent and delicious. We also got for $5 two braised pork tacos that were tasty. The drinks were also discounted. The bar staff was friendly as we got a chance to chat with them. We definitely want to come back and order off their regular bar menu beyond the happy hour items. The bar menu looks more interesting to us than their full blown menu though we understand that it is excellent. read more

Heritage might be my favorite restaurant of all time, and it's definitely my favorite in Madison. If I still lived in Madison, I would have to be the Duke by now. As is customary, I stopped in for brunch on Sunday morning during a trip to Madison. We made a reservation for our party of four; I called an hour ahead of our intended time, but we ended up needing to wait an additional 45 minutes, which we all gladly agreed to (although pro-tip, if you are dining alone or with just one other, you will typically be able to be seated at the bar immediately without a reservation). Once inside, this place is hopping and noisy and every table looks happy to be there. The restaurant is at garden level and feels small and cozy while still letting in plenty of natural sunlight. The decor feels like an old school craftsman with lots of wood paneling and book shelves, peppered with cooking and animal themed artifacts. All of these elements combine to make Heritage feel like you are spending the morning in your aunt's home, and that's before you really even served. The service is very fast, funny, and helpful. Our waitress checked in on us and refilled our coffees probably 10 times over the course of an hour while the rest of the restaurant was still packed. And then you get your food, and it is incredible. I'm guilty of getting the Heritage Tavern Benedict whenever I go and this Sunday wasn't an exception. The eggs are fried and crispy on the outside while still runny and velvety in the middle. The pork also has a slight crisp to it, giving a bit of a char taste along with its salty, fatty, juicy goodness. And the creamy hollandaise and spinach really tie the dish together, helping meld the flavors into one complex profile. If you come for brunch, this is an absolute must try. Aside from brunch, the cocktails are all amazing in my experience, as are the dinner options. Heritage is also extremely consistent, with no variance in quality or experience between visits. When I think of Madison and Wisconsin as a whole, I imagine that Heritage is the peak of where farm-fresh quality ingredients, creative and refined cooking, and a great Wisconsin ambiance meet.
