We stopped by on a Friday afternoon for Happy Hour - which they do throughout the entire restaurant from 3pm - 6pm daily. We sat on the patio which was cute and well heated. We ordered a margarita and beer to start, the margarita was very fresh. The best deal on the HH is their Nachos - they are topped with delicious pickled veggies, salads, guacamole, and more. These were the highlight. We also got the fish and barria tacos to share - they came with 2 good size tacos and both were very fresh and yummy. A nice Mexican lunch or dinner option in Japan-centered Sawtelle. It's very casual on the inside both in vibe and dress code. They also have a very large bar on one side and the other side will be the restaurant where we had our dinner. I will say that it is a bit over expensive, but the food taste and quality really was great. Our server was polite, although he didn't really check in on us aside from taking our order and bringing the check. They don't have a parking lot so it will be metered street parking which can be difficult to find in this part of town because theneighborhood behind Sawtelle Boulevard have parking restrictions unless you have a parking pass. We decided to order a mix of items because it was our first time. We started with the Guacamole, which was great as expected, but it was very small in size. We liked the flavors, but honestly, they should've given a larger portion. I felt overcharged for this one. Next came the Lobster Aguachile and I thought this one was my least favorite. It should've had more lobster and I felt there was way more liquid than anything else. I would skip this one and not recommend. Next came the Hamachi Sashimi and this one was actually very good. It was a good sized portion and tasted fresh and light and it is a great summer dish. Next were the Chilean Salmon Tacos, and I thought these were fantastic, probably my favorite dish of the night. The sauce on top really made it and it was a perfectly cooked piece of fish. For entrées we ordered the Crispy Skin Branzino and the Papa Flautas. The Crispy Skin Branzino was fantastic, the skin was perfectly crispy, and it was a good sized portion although the salsa verde on the bottom was not my favorite. The Papas Flautas were actually terrific and the avocado ranch really made it. I would order it again just for that sauce. Overall, a really solid meal although more expensive than it should be. I would suggest stopping in if you want to have a drink while you eat or just plan to order to two items per person max. read more

The biggest issue was that the majority of the seatings are outdoors and our steak got cold a few minutes after it arrived. The service was just good, however because this place is so small and the seats are so close to each other, the servers are very challenged to pay attention and stop by at your table. Not bad, but not great either. We got seated about 15 minutes after our reservation time and the staff were nice. The biggest challenge was the outdoor seating. It was super cold, and the heaters didn't really help because there weren't enough of them. It made the whole experience kind of challenging and difficult both for us and the servers. Ladies and gentlemen - this is an excellent restaurant!! When we arrived, it was packed, so we decided to sit in the bar - which was an excellent idea. We were promptly assisted by ANNY, who took our cocktail order. The restaurant has a chic and fun vibe/atmosphere. They had a live DJ with awesome music. It's perfect for cocktails or a group dinner. We ordered the bottle Paloma and the MYRLE cocktails, which were freshly made and delicious. For dinner we had the octopus (which was wonderful and the black beans added a delicate twist). Next we had the rajas tacos, which were so delicious and had an earthy flavor to it. We finished off with the cod, which was so delightful and it just melted in your mouth. Or good luck if you find something (non-metered) nearby on one of the neighborhood streets. The overall ambiance of this place was laid back and quiet. Mainly because we were some of the first ones to arrive for brunch that day and randomly picked a spot on Sawtelle. Food was okay, my French toast ($14) was not so good and overall, (just an FYI) their French toast is soggy. You can see what almost looks like a thin layer of milk under one of the French toast pieces in the pictures. Not for me but there's many styles of French toast so just wanted to mention that. My friend got the carnitas tacos ($12) she said they were okay as well. So, glad we tried this spot but maybe you'll have better luck if you decide to give it a try! read more

Came here on a Sunday around 4:30PM and it was relatively empty. I loooove the decor here - it's very natural tones/textures with fun pops of color. I noticed they even had a DJ booth inside so I bet it's fun here at night! The vibes were great. The server was really helpful & attentive. I'm gonna be the odd guy out on this one, methinks. It's not bad here. It's just not worth it. Tiny servings. Good flavor. I like to eat well, but I also like to not be hungry afterwards at $50-60 per person. But here's the thing that really got my goat -- the staff all wore a shirt that says "LOVE YOU", and I thought it was cute and friendly and different. Made me feel like a little love, but yeah, guess what, it's a damned brand. YUP, there's some LOVE YOU brewery whatever that they're pushing and it's not very good. I relented and tasted it. I did not like. There was some other on-tap beer that was much better. The place was friendly and fun and comfy on couches. The chairs were not comfy. So, I won't be going back but I applaud the effort at this place. I think the rent must be insane? Too bad since I won't be returning to help pay it. I did think the food was tasty! Both of the drinks were quite strong, but the alcohol didn't overpower the fruity or prickly pear flavors respectively. The appetizer we got were their popular bao buns that were filled with curry crispy chicken and veggies that made it fresh and delicious. We both got tacos for our entrees, the birria tacos were very simple, but my friend said it had good taste. The carnitas tacos served with lime and grilled onion were so good, I would say some of the best tacos I've had. There was a lot of meat which was juicy and there was a fresh chicharron on top for crunch. The ambience of the place is modern and sitting outside with the heaters was nice. The patio and space is beautiful. Tres leches cake looked so amazing and tasted even better. We got the lychee fix and margarita--both of which were delish and strong enough to get me buzzed halfway through the drink. (Keep in mind I am small). The best part of the night was definitely the staff. Holden holdin' it down and Elias, the most fun and welcoming manager. Gotta shout out Jose and Lorenzo too! These guys really made our night. Drinks are good but the drinks with ice are over iced and make it difficult to drink and frequently watered down. For example my photos show a Japanese Old Fashioned which is nothing like the photo on the site. Buneleos for dessert we're amazing and the Fish Stix we're very tasty. Ultimately this should be considered as a great place to grab some drinks with friends or a date and to have small plates. Would return! read more

This was actually my second time at Hermanito and I have to say I was impressed. I had been before for happy hour which had some good deals but my shrimp tacos were disappointing. This time I was blown away by the food specifically the churro waffle and the camarones and grits. The waffle was a good treat but not overly sweet. The shrimp and grits were super decadent and rich but extremely flavorful. Our server was really attentive and recommended some great drinks as well as dishes. My resty spidey senses are usually good, but not that day. Was in the mood for sashimi or Mexican, so I was happy to find fusion. Hermanito had a cozy warm look, but the warmth turned quickly when we got there. From the get go our server was like ice. Throughout I felt her agitation, until it was bill time. Only two other tables were occupied so they weren't busy. I thought at least the food should be good...I'll ignore the attitude. After all, it was my birthday with a good friend. Food & drink. The good: Presentation was great. Took pics even. Hamachi appetizer was fresh with the usual yuzu type dressing. From my fish taco plate, the only memorable item was a side of a tomato based soup that had a depth of flavor. The lavender marg was delish, and the friendly mixologist shared how to get the pretty hue. The bad: Everything else was flavor-less. No exaggeration since I lean towards lighter seasoning. The fish tasted like it had only one spice, cayenne maybe, otherwise it was just holding texture. The tortilla felt almost soggy, and not due to any sauce nor drippings. My friend's sizable salad was very bland with what seemed like only an olive oil toss. No tang, salt, nothing. Her chicken addition had flavor (yay) but was on the dry side. Considering the high reviews and skill in presentation, Hermanito was a surprising let down. It was like spotting an awesome alpaca sweater, but once I got it, wore like 100% acrylic. read more

We had a company group lunch here yesterday. There were 6 of us. The restaurant is a cool, stand-alone Spanish style building with a bar/restaurant type of layout inside with a pretty large (by LA standards) outdoor patio dining area. The service was very good. I didn't know what to expect in terms of food. Not often you see a Mexican/Japanese fusion restaurant. Most of the menu seemed to be more Mexican themed with bits of Japanese elements thrown in. Our table shared the guacamole/chips as an appetizer. 4/5. The guac was good, as were the chips (which had a bit of dry spices sprinkled on them). The portions size for the guac and salsa are pretty small. I ordered the Chipotle Octopus tacos - 4.5/5 - each plate comes with 2 tacos. My associate ordered the Spicy Pescado tacos - 4.5/5, and we decided to share so we can have one of each. I thought both were very good. Each was very flavorful and the the proteins were cooked perfectly in each one. One of our co-workers could not make it so we had ordered the Poblano Rajas tacos as take-out. Unfortunately, she said they were terrible and only took one bite. I did not try them so can only relate the story. I would welcome eating here again. I also think it would be a great spot for happy hour, as a lot of their tacos as basically almost half off and the setting is cool enough to have a drink or two. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants and I hate to leave this review but it's well deserved. My girlfriend's and I come here all the time, it's a girls night staple. We arrive and we are told immediately that all of our favorite items are unavailable due to a big party ordering the max of those specific items. Our waiter supplemented with free shots of tequila but that didn't change the fact that we went there for specific items. Our reservation was at 8:30pm and we were told that last call for food and drinks was 9:30. Hermanito closes at midnight so we thought it was a bit odd. We then asked, why is the restaurant closing 2 hours early and there was no real answer. The server started stuttering and started saying random things that didn't make sense. It came off as if the staff just wanted to leave. As showed, we spent over $200 and the overall experienced sucked. The fact that we had to rush and eat our food because the staff wanted to go home is ridiculous. When I called and asked what time they closed, they said midnight. To turn on the lights and tell us they are closed is by far the worst experience we've had in a very long time. read more

Went here a couple weekends ago with my girlfriend. I really wanted to give this place a good review, it's a really cute spot tucked in one of my favorite neighborhoods to eat in with plenty of comfortable outdoor seating. We sat at the bar in the main dining room where the bartender made us amazing margaritas. Unfortunately, someone who introduced themselves as the manager came up to the two of us and kept hitting on me and my friend. He kept offering to give us tequila shots and it seemed like he might have had a few himself beforehand. Maybe this would've been a plus when I was younger, but it was kind of off putting an a little uncomfortable as he didn't seem to take the hint to stop bothering us. We came as a walk in on Friday at 7 and the atmosphere remains me a lot of belles beach house in Venice. This place was not crowded whatsoever and the kind host promptly seated us in the outdoor patio. We ordered the golden hour cocktail which was very fresh and sweet. Things took a bad turn when the entrees came. The birria tacos were a let down. $22 for 2 small mediocre tacos is a rip off full stop. The tortilla shells were soggy but the beef was decently seasoned. The tempura asparagus was somewhat adequate but again, soggy. Lastly the pork was dry and lacked flavor. Additionally our waiter disappeared for 20 minutes and we had to flag down a busser to pay our check. Overall, you're not missing anything with place. Came here 09/06 evening. The atmosphere here is very aesthetic, and the food runners and host were friendly. Unfortunately our experience with service was disappointing. Our waitress was inattentive. After taking our drink orders, it took 20 minutes before she returned to take our food order. Once placed, dishes came out slowly and one by one. We even received a second refill of our appetizer chips before a simple salad arrived, which shouldn't take long to prepare. When it came time to pay, she handed us the card reader but then yanked it out of my partner's hand as soon as the transaction was complete in a way that felt rushed and aggressive. It left a very negative impression, to the point that we regretted having to tip at all.
