The octopus salad is listed as an appetizer, but it's a good size as a healthy entree if you got a shared appetizer. The only food we got that wasn't that great were the tortilla chips that came with the ceviche. They were stale in some parts, but I didn't bother to ask for new ones to see if it was a bad batch or just how it is. I would go back though and want to try happy hour. My boyfriend and I regularly come here for happy hour. It's a super cute restaurant and their staff is always friendly. Their happy hour menu is great! Our go-to's are always the guac, potato flautas, and birria tacos. We've also had their regular dinner menu items a bunch of times too and everything has always been delicious. You can't go wrong with any of the items here. For happy hour drinks, I always get the margarita, the Golden Hour, or the Jamaica Mojito. Beware the drinks are stroooong! I went for a quick dinner on Saturday with three other people! We decided on this place because my friends wanted cocktails and this one of the few restaurant establishments in the area that served them. After checking in with the hostess, we were seated almost immediately around 8pm which was very surprising since it was during peak dinner time. Unfortunately, I couldn't take much pictures since of the unfavorable lighting but the decor was really cute and tasteful. I was ravenous after an evening work shift so I ordered the miso seabass. I was pretty excited to eat considering the wait wasn't too long. Ultimately, I was pretty disappointed in this dish. I've had miso seabass at countless other establishments but unfortunately it did not measure up. First off, there was a fishy aroma from the sea bass, which I can expect to some extent, but this was really overpowering. Although, I had received a pretty sizable portion of fish, it lacked the miso flavor I was expecting. The char was really nice but it lacked depth and flavor. The sushi rice seemed more like regular steamed rice and wasn't what I was expecting. At this point, I can't really justify paying $36 for a dish that doesn't deliver. I decided to order the sticky ribs afterwards which definitely hit the spot. They were sticky, sweet, tangy and a very generous portion size. I would have liked the ribs to be a little more tender but they still very tasty. Service was fantastic! Probably one of the highlights of our visit next to the cocktails. What you need to know, before all else, is HAPPY HOUR. Hermanito is your classic upscale Mexican restaurant. The tacos are dressed up with flowers, the margaritas aren't made from a premade mix and hit just a little harder, and the ambience is cute enough that you get dressed up to eat there. But what would make me choose hermanito over a few other very similar Mexican restaurants on the West side is their fantastic happy hour situation. What might originally seem like slightly overpriced suddenly is a steal with both tacos and margs being around $10 each. I got a house margarita (fantastic, and salty just how I like em) and the carnitas tacos (good flavor, not the most mind blowing tacos I've ever had but very solid). The menu is diverse and offers a range of dishes that cater to various tastes for meat lovers, seafood lovers or vegetarians. Loved the cocktails here, I chose the midori inspired cocktail. We definitely over ordered, especially on the appetizers. We got the queso fundido (this was amazing), guac and chips as well as the hamachi crudo. For our mains we got tacos but I was eyeing the karage buns. The achiote chicken taco was my favorite and the birria tacos were also pretty solid, but definitely felt heavy on the cheese. Hermanito happy hour lasts from 3-6 PM and we were able to easily get outdoor seats at 5 PM on a Friday. Ordered the calamari and doubled up on the Palomas. My favorite order here to date. Have ventured out here a few times and have also had their mezcal margaritas which are spicy(!) and their carnitas and fish tacos which are solid but nothing too exciting. Parking is the Sawtelle standard with meters on the main street and plenty of free street parking on the adjacent streets. Came back, and the service was top notch. Jose did an incredible job making sure we had a fantastic dining experience. The space is beautiful as well, especially in the summer. My feelings about the food are mixed. The hamachi was fantastic, and the guac was good, but the miso salmon and miso eggplant were almost inedible. Fish quality was not good, almost no miso sauce on the fish, and the eggplant was super tough and seedy. They comped part of the price of the fish due to our negative experience, but I like Hermanito, and I want them to thrive, and they really need to remove both these menu items from the menu, or significantly improve them if they want to continue to stay open. Every Japanese restaurant does these dishes well, but I wouldn't eat the versions at Hermanito again even if someone paid me to do so. read more

I've been here 3-4 times since I moved to LA, and for someone that usually never repeats a restaurant twice, really makes Hermanito one of my favorite local restaurants/bars. Tucked in the middle of Sawtelle Blvd amongst all the ramen shops, it is an authentic Mexican restaurant with a welcome Asian fusion twist. Vibes are great, both indoors and outside on their covered patio. Both their food and drinks are solid - try to come from 3-6 PM for their happy hour, which takes almost half off select food and drinks, including their delicious tacos. My go to orders for the table are usually their house guacamole, made with chunks of fresh avocado and just the right amount of lime, and the karaage chicken bao buns, which might just be the best bao buns I've had in any restaurant, Japanese or not. For my choice of entree I always get the Hermanito Rice Bowl, which I usually get with hangar steak as my choice of protein. It's a hearty and healthy combination with rice and salad greens, and filling enough I usually can take half home for leftovers. For cocktails you can't go wrong with either of their Old Fashioned, which are both unique takes on the classic drink with the use of Japanese Toki or mezcal, depending on your mood. Finally, I have to shout out the service staff, for their efforts during a meal I had there this past summer. I was wearing a purse with a thin chain, which somehow got stuck between the planks of their outdoor bench. My servers and even the bartender came by and spent no less than 30 minutes trying to free my purse out, complete with crowbar and shears. They were ultimately successful for their efforts, with the bartender cutting his hand in the process. In the end, he made me a free drink, when really the thanks should have been the other way around. But for that, Hermanito has me as a fan for life. read more

Oh yes, this was a yummy one, especially if you're a fan of honey ginger tea, haha. It even comes with a candied ginger garnish! The right amount of strength and sweetness in a beverage that would be just enough as one beverage for the night (if you don't eat that is). HH MEZCAL MARGARITA - $12 Verde Mezcal, Lime, Agave. This lovely drink was garnished with a dehydrated slice of lime. It's a tasty drink that is refreshing, strong and sweet. HH GUACAMOLE - $10 Smashed Avocado, Pico de Gallo, Chips, Molcajete Salsa. A small serving packed with a lot of punch! I loved how the chips were well seasoned, and that is item also comes with salsa. What's great about the Guacamole is that it's garnished with pickled onions, making it such a unique experience. I suggest each person getting their own since it's a small serving of something you'd pick at for awhile with your drink. HH BIRRIA TACOS - $10 (2 pcs) Guerrero style Braised Beef, Queso Chihuahua, Cilnatro, Onion, Consume. Don't let it's looks full ya. These tacos are beautiful on the inside--rich in flavor and taste. Came to Hermanito for the second time earlier this week, and this place never fails. With an exceptional fusion menu, Hermanito combines Mexican and Japanese flavors. In the past, I've tried the oysters (great starter) and the msushroom mulita (6/10) - a skip in my opinion, and the hamachi sashimi (9.5/10) - a great shareable choice. This past week, my co-worker and I ordered the following: Guacamole and chips: flavorful and comes along with a salsa that has a slight kick. 9/10. Papa flautas: generous portion of all ingredients, topped with pepper and an avocado lime crema. 9.5/10 Sticky ribs: great fusion option, wish had more sauce. 8/10 Spicy pescado tacos: a bit bland for our taste. Would probably skip in the future. 6.5/10 Hangar steak tacos: flavorful, loved the crispy onions as well as green onion on the side. 10/10 Bunuelos & Ice Cream: phenomenal. Felt like an abuelitas home cooked dessert. 10/10 Tres Leche: very rich but extremely fresh fruit. 8/10 We tried the mezcal margarita 10/10 and I had the Paloma as well which was extremely refreshing, 9.5/10. I used to love this beautiful, Tulum-inspired spot for high quality Mexican inspired tapas and cocktails, but their food quality has gone down significantly since I visited last year. It's a shame since I used to recommend this spot to all my friends, but our visit today was completely underwhelming and not worth the price we paid for our meal. Birria tacos: these weren't as flavorful as they used to be, and the consome reminded me more of a salsa. The dish also came with this weird queso dip and a pile of pickled veggies that paired poorly with the dish. Octopus tacos: this was the only redeeming dish of our meal, and I loved how tender and flavorful the octopus was. Birria tamales: these had absolutely no birria flavor, and were covered with a thick cheese sauce and the aforementioned pickled veggies I used to love their innovative cocktails as well, but all that was available today were simple yet overpriced cocktails that took quite a long time to come out. I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, the ambiance is amazing. We were seated outside right next to the fireplace, so I was really nice and warm the entire dinner. They play great music and the outdoor vibe is just super lively and fun. This would be a great place to get drinks too, since it's also a bar. Service is also great -- we had a very friendly and funny server with great energy. Food came out pretty quickly too. Sadly the food was very hit or miss. Both tacos we ordered (the birria and the pollo/chicken tacos) were FIRE but the guac/chips appetizer was not good. It didn't taste fresh and had a very strong limey flavor. The birria tacos came with some pickled veggies which I thought was interesting. The Catcher was borderline life changing (and I am pickyyy w my cocktails) which is saying a lot. It was just amazing and almost like a cozy comforting drink. I actually swapped with my bf (didn't really give him a choice) cause it was that good. The service was great! Attentive, friendly and overall I look forward to coming back!
