It does not get any better than Herman J Wiemer. Last year I relocated from Oregon Wine Country to the FLX. I have been to wineries all over Napa, Sonoma and The Willamette Valley. After moving I needed a new go to winery- one that was both beautiful to take guests to as well as a producer of outstanding wines. Lucky for me I found Wiemer. I was greeted and seated on arrival. The facility is gorgeous- exposed wood and a beautiful barn. Excellent tasting room associates that are knowledgeable about the region. They produce outstanding wines including Riesling, Chardonnay, Cab Franc as well as several varieties of sparkling. Finding a great red in the FLX (known for whites) up until now had been a challenge. I stock the farm red as my table wine at home- it's perfect. The rose is amazing- next year I will buy a case before they sell out. No matter what you are looking for they have it all- Wiemer is sure to impress wine experts or novices and everyone in between. It gets busy especially during tourist season so calling ahead does not hurt. I will return again and again. My friend from Oregon said visiting was the hi-light of her trip. Herman Weimer and Dr. Franks wineries are the two most elite wineries in the FL. This is a must-do stop on your wine tour!! Make reservations in far in advance, it is sometimes sold out it's that good! It's a lovely date place. It's a super classy place with a staff that is very well educated and the wine is superior. Try their 2023 dry Riesling wine, it's awesome. As you're driving down the road it's easy to miss, they should put some another sign or two out before the entrance so people don't drive by and miss it. read more

We LOVED our visit to Hermann J. Wiemer. Not only were they some of the best wines we've had on our visit to Seneca, but their staff was also super informative and we were able to buy some grape vines to take home. I just finished my first trip to the Finger Lakes Wine region, and did a TON of research beforehand to select the 4 wineries we'd visit on our day trip to Seneca Lake. I read blogs, articles, reviews, visited their websites, looked to see if they were mentioned in any news or won any awards. We are all California natives who go wine tasting on a regular basis, and we all enjoy dry wines, specifically reds and don't really care for sweet wine. So, this was a challenge I accepted in an area that does a lot of sweet wine. I'll save you the hassle of doing your own research - I ended up taking my friends to Hermann J Wiemer, Barnstormer, Fox Run and Red Tail Ridge. Hermann J Wiemer was our first stop. I wanted to start with a more established winery, and it didn't disappoint. Upon arrival, we were taken into the tasting room where your group was placed around individual tasting tables. Your tasting host then came over and shared some information about the winery, the wines and took you through a very nice tasting of six pre-set wines. However, our host modified it slightly to accommodate our preference for dry wine. Our favorite was their Field White. It is a unique light wine that has 45% Gruner Veltliner, a grape none of us had ever had before. The Dry Riesling and Rosé of Pinot Noir were also nice. They encouraged us to walk out to their vineyard after our tasting was done, which was a very nice thing, and provided a nice backdrop for some group photos. Now, one thing to note overall, this area produces a weaker wine than California. I will attribute this to the amount of rain and moisture this area gets, so they really have to work hard to get a lot of flavor out of their grapes. So, if you like big-bold-cab's, you may be disappointed in the wines of the finger lakes overall...but, I say, let's appreciate the area for what it offers, it's unique and nice to see an area working hard to make good wine despite the climate and challenges they face. read more

Herman J Wiemer Vineyard was one of the more highly rated and highly recommended vineyards in the Himrod area. We were a group of 8, and due to covid they only allow groups of 6 maximum per reservation. Fortunately my wife and I made two separate reservations for 4 people and they were still able to accommodate us and allowed the 8 of us to sit together at the same people since they had the space. I am not an avid wine drinker so, the wine to me was okay. I usually like sweeter wines and was unable to find one that I liked. This does not mean the wines were not good. Everyone in the group liked the wines, but no one left buying a bottle for themselves to take home with them, if that says anything about how the wines were. Service was great, the server was sort of helpful, possibly new, but he was very nice and polite and attentive. All and all a good experience, I would probably try a different place next time. read more

This is a must stop if you are in the area. This is a Riesling House and they are all fabulous. Appointments are required and we had a beautiful seat out on the patio. There are no set flights; it's pick what you would like to try. They have 2.5 oz pours and 5 oz pours. 2.5 is great for 2-3 people. 5 oz worked for our party of six. The pours come in a carafe so you can pour what you like into everyone's glass. I loved their reserve Riesling. It's one of the best I had on the trip. I also really enjoyed the Gewurtztraminer. We also enjoyed a bottle of bubbly that we ordered that they had just released that day. We were able to enjoy it with some complimentary popcorn that was given to us on the way in. Our wine host was so interesting and amazing. She is surgeon and she loves the wine here so much she works here on the side for fun. How cool is that? Overall, this is definitely one of my top visits in the Finger Lakes and you should definitely visit if you are in the area and looking for great wine that is really representative of the region. read more

We'd heard over and over that Hermann J. Wiemer has the best wines in the Finger Lakes, so we made sure to visit this winery. And don't get me wrong, they were good. But hearing over and over that something is the best may have inflated our expectations slightly, because while they were certainly good, we weren't blown away or anything. Actually, our favorite wine was their Field Blend (Grüner base with Riesling and Chardonnay - not something I'd seen blended before but which worked very well) - incidentally, their least expensive bottle. We also tried their premier Rieslings with the expectation that we'd buy a few bottles, but walked away with the Field Blend and Saperavi Rosé instead. Chacun à son goût, as the French say. We are nerds who most enjoy the chance to talk to someone on the staff about the wines, as we got at Tabora and Fox Run, which we visited directly before and after. The way it works at HJW, you do get a server who answers some questions as he or she takes your order, but doesn't stick around to talk to you about them. Some, again, may prefer this. The atmosphere is certainly very posh and stands out if that's what you're looking for. (It's definitely not a good place for the typical bachelor/ette party.) I did also like that you can select your own wines for the tasting. At the same time, however, the smallest option (2.5 oz) is more than I need on a wine tasting tour; it was more than enough for my husband and I to split, which means we could taste far fewer wines between us for the same price. I am not suggesting they change this - it's a good option to have in the area - but only noting this for your planning purposes. (Most other wineries offer a selection of pre-arranged flights, with tiny pours of each.) I am also the sort of person who asks for a dump bucket so I can taste as many wines as possible without them all starting to taste the same; most of you reading this probably won't be operating that way, I realize. Overall, if you're looking for a sophisticated setting and a traditional flight, this place would be a five star visit for you. But for our tour of wine nerdery, while we'd stop in the store next time to pick up a bottle of the Field Blend, we would not necessarily recommend the tasting to everyone who visits the Finger Lakes. What a terrific spot. Loved the method approach and hospitality here. What a nice at to taste wine. We were welcomed by Oscar and went to the tasting room. Despite being busy we were taken care of very nicely and spoilt by some of the single vineyard Riesling's! Loved all of them. The Field White was excellent. A nice blend and terrific value for money! The Riesling dry was good. Loved the Reserve, Magdalena and Reserve dry. What spectacular wine making. The Riesling's bio was a good try but not to my taste. But others loved it. This winery is special. Is has a certain charm that will grab you instantly. My pics below should sell you on this. Surprisingly this winery is not adjacent to the lake and there is no view from the grounds. They aren't even on several of the maps I viewed on line. The wine tasting was pricey at 8 dollars. They specialize in white wine and have received several national awards. They use no sulfates or preservatives of any kind in the preparation. The Chardonnay and Reisling I tried are among the best I have had. Crisp, refreshing and balanced. The wine itself is also expensive. The had a limited Chardonnay that was 38 dollars..... and sold out. Do not miss this spot. Trust me. read more

Hermann Wiemer is one of my favorites vineyards in the Finger Lakes. It's a beautiful, rustic converted barn with a high-ceiling tasting room that opens to the vineyard. We actually met Oscar Bynke, one of the co-owners who gave our tastings. He was very friendly, and I learned quite a bit. I'm no wine geek by any means, but wine is my drink of choice. I just generally don't drink at home unless I'm out with friends. But in general, I'm on the more dry, less sweet spectrum. This winery makes some delicious wines. Some of my favorites are the reserve dry Riesling, the Cabernet Franc, and the Gewürztraminer. I personally had not heard of the Gewürztraminer prior to the tasting, which is apparently an aromatic grape variety that produces white wines that are usually off-dry. I really enjoyed it, and apparently it's paired with Asian cuisines and pork dishes. Win-win for me. read more

I lived this winery in the Seneca Lake one trail. It was my favorite. You do need to book a reservation as the have limited seating. They have indoor and out seating under a white tent. This winery was number 1 on my hit list on a recent drive up to the Finger Lakes ( for the one week that Virginia was off the " banned " list due to COVID ) . Sadly upon arrival reservations were booked but the hostess was able to squeeze us in on our last day there . We were seated under a tent and were brought out our tastings . I tried a red here I had never had before which was great. It was called a Lemburger and it was kinda like a Pinot Noir but a bit heavier . What really stood out however were the dry Riesling's ! Very tasty and not sweet , but they do have sweet ones if that suits you . Beautiful winery abs really superb service . The only drawback was there wasn't really any view of the lake . read more

This is an outstanding winery and tasting room in the Finger Lakes, one with history and a solid reputation in the wine world. The vineyard's history goes back to German roots and is well known for its Riesling. They even still hand pick and sort the grapes! The tasting room is in a beautifully renovated barn on the property on the west side of Seneca Lake. The vineyards are expansive and a lovely backdrop to the tasting experience. We tasted in the back room, which has large windows opening up to the back of the vineyard. That day, they were setting up for an event going on so all hands on deck, but we never once felt rushed or in the way of their preparation. We opted for 2 tastings of the seasonal flight (~$10 each), sampling the Gruner Veltliner, Gewurtztraminer, dry rosé, and reserve dry Riesling. The dry rosé was lovely, and unique from other French-style rosé with the addition of cab franc - it tasted smokier and warmer, but still refreshing and light - they said a perfect pairing with vegetables/salads. The reserve dry Riesling was outstanding (we bought a bottle) - the ideal balance of citrus bite, minerality, and juiciness. You sip these wines and immediately want to bite into something that complements the flavors so if you're into pairings, these are stellar wines for that purpose, the flavors are enhanced when it's done well. We will be back for more tastings again. In the meantime, let's crack that bottle of reserve dry Riesling! read more

The inside has a modern industrial feel and the outdoor seating patio is intimate with beautiful trees surrounding the area for a quiet experience. The wines were great. We did not enjoy the structure of the tasting If you're going with a group, it's too hard to taste individual wines you are interested in. For example, in our group of 4 people, 2 liked whites, one liked sparkling, and one liked red. It was very awkward and annoying to have to share our taste selections. They could improve the experience if we could just order the types of wines we were interested in. The tasting experience was too complex. Excellent wine, tho. read more

If you're a fan of Reisling you will love Hermann J. Weimer. They are really designed for a lot of people to be in the tasting room which I enjoyed because other tasting rooms are kind of small and you might have to wait a little. When you first walk in you see all their bottles for sale. When my group arrived there wasn't anyone in there so we ended up waiting a few minutes until someone came out to escort us to the tasting room. I feel like they should have someone in the front at all times to make it less confusing. There are 3 tastings you can choose from. I think the first one is the best then the Riesling tasting. There's a third option I forgot which it was but it's basically the first one but it cost more. In the third option there is 1 wine that isn't on the list but if you talk to the person serving you they'll be find to let you sample it. I was with a group of 4 and most of us chose the first tasting while my boyfriend chose the Riesling tasting. I really enjoyed all the wines I tasted and I ended up picking up a bottle of their Rieslings to go. If you like any of their bottles I recommend you buy it there. Most restaurants in the city charge 4/5x the price. The vineyard itself is so beautiful I'd recommend you to visit if you're in the finger lakes. read more

Wow, the best and most classy Winery we visited the day we toured the Seneca Lake area. This winery was by far the most popular of the day not only by us, but also by judging how many others were waiting to get in. Our wait was about 10 minutes then we were escorted to our tasting tasting table. We received two sheets of paper that gave a short history of winery and described the wines we would be tasting. We were served by a young man and a lady who has worked their for 14 years. Both were extremely knowledgeable and engaging. All in all our group was impressed and very pleased with our visits. read more

Without a doubt, the best stop of our day. Hermann Wiemer was not on our Fingerlakes wine trail map, I only knew of its existence from doing a Yelp search of vineyards in the vicinity and the stellar reviews suggested we give it a shot. The parking lot was rather small and as we approached the tasting room, I was blown away by how beautiful it was, and this was only my impression of the exterior. Walking in, there was a small room with bottles of wine and we were greeted by a woman, said we wanted a tasting and she escorted us into the back tasting room. The inside was even more beautiful than the outside. Words simply cannot explain the architecture and design, it was flawless, creative, rustic, simply gorgeous. We had some time before someone was able to do a tasting for us and I spent the couple moments in awe of the place. I believe the gentleman who did our tasting was Michael, that could be completely wrong, but I do know he lived in Harlem and in California and he was just amazing. Amazing. The most knowledgeable person we spoke with throughout our two day venture up and down Seneca Lake. We were given several options for our tasting. We could pay $5 for select wines or upgrade and pay $10 for their higher end ones. I chose the $10 one, because why not. Their $10 tasting appealed more so to me. Their 2013 Field Cuvee, just insane. Mostly Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Lemberger (which I was not familiar with until this trip.) Their 2013 Frost Cuvee, another favorite. The best of the tasting, however, for me, was the 2012 Cuvee Brut. You could see the bubbles trail in a cyclone appearance all the way up the glass. Absolutely delicious, I should have bought a few bottles, but I will definitely be back. The gentleman who did our tasting was so passionate about their wines and he could talk food too, which I really enjoyed. He knew everything there was to know about the winemaking process at this particular vineyard and really made this experience the best we had at any other tasting room. My only sad comment is that I had spoken to him about a group of 35 coming in on a Monday and he said they would be able to accommodate us. Unfortunately, when I called a few days later and spoke with a different gentleman about booking the reservation, he said he did not have any staff that would be able to come in on a Monday and do the tasting for our large party. He said the space was also not big enough. I could see how that might be an issue, but I was bummed because I had been raving to everyone about how amazing this experience was. Smaller group next time, or heck, I may just come solo! Also, their glassware! LOVE! Love the barrels, love the flutes, love it all. High quality wines, high quality service, cannot beat that. read more

I would like to preface this by saying that I work within the wine industry in the Finger Lakes and Wiemer has absolutely blown us away. The way they have handled the new Covid regulations is outstanding. They provide your tastings in carafes aboard slate serving trays. They seat you in a wonderful and warm barn next to stainless steel casks. Joe was a pleasure as our server and provided thoughtful notes and checked in with us at a perfect rate. The wines are incredible, and the reds are some of the best that we have sampled in the Fingerlakes. I cannot stress enough how much this should be in your top 3 wineries to visit in the Fingerlakes. This place should be on the top of your list when touring the wineries around the Finger Lakes region. Even though it doesn't offer Seneca Lake views as many of the others do don't let that distract you. Make this one a must visit. Staff is top notch, fun, professional, entertaining, and really knows their stuff. I'm not a huge fan of white wines but the Rieslings here will blow your socks off. They are that good. We purchased a box full to take home. Wonderful tasting room area that is situated in a modernized old barn. Small patio area to take some wine on and enjoy a nice afternoon. At only $5 for 5 tastings it is so worth it as Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard makes the best Rieslings hands down. Just delicious. We even tried some of their special sparking wines courtesy of the sommelier who was serving us and it was amazing. Yes, we bought this too.
