Wiemer is known for their Rieslings but also their other offerings. We stopped in and were taken back to their tasting area. The staff were not friendly and I expected a lot more conversation and discussions about the wine but we got very little despite our best efforts. This certainly knocked off 1 star. There are not enough positive words to express how much we like the wine, venue and people at this winery! The product is fantastic and award winning - totally fell for the Frost Cuvee during my last visit. We recently brought a small tour in to taste wines during our wedding weekend and everyone went above and beyond - they set up the tasting room, had tasting menus made specifically for us and gave tremendous attention to the group. The HJ Wiemer vineyard is the standard by which all the wineries in the Finger Lakes should be judged. Very simply put it's the best! The beautiful barn is such a great setting. The people that work there are friendly, knowledgeable, and like their jobs. That would still be great even if the wine was average, BUT it's not! Our favorite wine by far. LOVED the set-up of this vineyard. Seriously, I want to steal the house with the pergola and basically replicate this place. The staff is super friendly and played along with our big (read giant) group of 10 "pedestrians" and the host introduced us to the sommoliers. Had so much fun. The place is simple but that simplicity lent itself towards elegance. There was a family reunion going on that looked like it was having a pretty good time. We ended up purchasing some bottles and playing cards overlooking the vineyards in the back with some bread and cheese! Perfect set up! Definitely will be sending friends here. This is the second time we are here. Last year we came in Summer. We did wine pairing, which is 25 dollars for 5 wines and assorted cheese and meat. We loved it. This year we came in fall. Scenery is quite different this time since you can enjoy foliage in this season too. read more

Hermann J Wiemer is the winery that all other Finger Lakes wineries should be judged against. Finger Lakes wineries sometimes get a bad rap for lesser quality when compared against their European and Californian big brothers but Wiemer is not one of them. My four friends and I (we were in the Finger Lakes for a "girls' weekend" to celebrate one friend's upcoming wedding) had time to squeeze in one more winery before 5:00ish closing time as we were heading north on 14 back to our cabin...and I am SO glad we happened to pull into this one! What a perfect end to our afternoon. The space itself is really neat and airy, so it was a great ambiance for wine tasting. I also enjoyed their wines, even though I don't usually go for Rieslings. The woman who poured our wines was super-friendly and fun. The woman who rang up our purchases at the register...not so much. Customer service tip to her: I'm sure the wine trail gets more than its share of tipsy tasters, and I'll bet it gets old for the staff, and I sympathize--but when someone is actually *buying* some of your wine, it might be nice to throw a smile or a pleasantry their way. Just saying. But back to our wine-pourer--she was great, and also recommended some other wineries along the trail that she liked and that were open past 5:00, which I thought was nicely classy and professional. (We were at our limit after four tastings, but I appreciate the recommendations for next trip.) As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, this isn't actually on the wine trail map for tourists--but it's right on the trail, so be sure to pull off and try it! read more

Beautiful winery! Excellent wines, a little more money; however, you get what you pay for. One of the neat things they have for sale is the vines. You can buy some to start ypur own growths of the different grapes. Will return on our next trip up. read more

As always, Wiemer was a great stop. This third year was probably the best so far, with excellent Riesling offerings across the board. We were particularly taken with the 2017 Dry Riesling, the best of the four vintages of this wine we have tried so far. The newest release of the Late Harvest Riesling, from 2016, was also a welcome addition that should age well for 10 years or more. I will forever have this great memory, and am looking forward to sharing this experience and recommending this wine to many, many others! I am a sommelier from Virginia and just recently visited the Finger Lakes region for the first time to take a sommelier exam with the Court of Sommeliers at the New York Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua, NY. A sommelier friend recommended the vineyard. I heard of HJW before from inquiring about purchasing clones last year. Anyway, I stopped by on my way south, and I had the best time that I have ever had at a tasting room and/or vineyard. I have been to many, many Virginia vineyards that are top notch and not to criticize other wineries or vineyards at all, but HJW vineyard took things to another level. Kay was in the tasting room and she did a phenomenal job explaining the region, climate, soil, vineyard layout, and different varietals and wines. I left feeling taken care of and knew the full story of the vineyard. As a sommelier learning the full story, the region, the soil type, the types of grapes are very important to me. However, I find myself leaving tasting rooms with a good idea of the wines from trying them, but not of the story or additional crucial information. HJW delivered. In addition, I have to point out phenomenal hospitality that is hard to find. Furthermore, the staff seemed engaged and dedicated to the craft of winemaking. From my understanding, staff just picked TBA grapes. They nodded their heads when they passed by me, not even knowing who I was. I get a real sense that the owners / managers put a great deal of investment into every part of the vineyard from not only the field but also to the tasting room staff (who at other places sometimes sadly, maybe not intentionally, get overlooked). This vineyard is definitely a step above others on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. The ambience is classy but relaxed. The staff are all very knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions. I have been going to this winery for 10 years, this year myself and a group of 8 showed up for tastings as we always do and were told without an appointment they couldn't give us a tasting. Although there was no one else there they told us they weren't staffed to give us a tasting because they had another appointment coming. My wife and I were visiting the Finger Lake wineries to explore Dry Rieslings in the USA. We are from Sonoma County, CA and have plenty of local Cabs, Pinots, and Sauv Blancs that we love. However, in the past we discovered some great dry Rieslings in Germany and Austria that we could not find at home. The highlight of our trip was this small winery in Dundee NY that reminded us of small family wineries in northern California. The wines we tasted at Herman J Wiemer were over the top. The Dry Rieslings were dry and well balanced in minerality and fruit. The Cuvee Brut 2012 sparkling was another have to bring home treat - a great blend of Chardonnay (60%) and Pinot (40%). Everything should start with a sparkling wine and this would be a great go to sparkler. Our guide was Oskar Bynke, one of the owners, a multitasking man of great knowledge and a super host. If you plan a tour of the Finger Lake wineries for Dry Rieslings and do this one first, you may be disappointed with the rest of your tour, but you will have fond memories of the first one. If you only have time for one winery in the Finger Lakes, make this the winery to visit. read more

This was by far the best of the eight wineries we visited around Seneca Lake. As far as the quality of the wines, there was just no competition - Wiemer's wines, and particularly the Rieslings (there were four to sample), were world-class, and they have the ratings from Wine and Spirits and Wine Enthusiast to back it up. Awesome! Hands down the best of five wineries my wife and I went to recently. We walked out with a case of wine to show! Really good Rieslings and Gewurtzaminers! Slightly higher priced than the other wineries in the area, but worth the premium. The winery itself is beautiful - classy decor to it. Good service!
