This place was recommended by other wineries, so we definitely put it on the list to check out. It was an ugly rainy day, so we were the only ones in the tasting area, which I always like. Wiemer is known for their rieslings, and I can see why. We picked up a couple each of both the dry and semi dry. They are fantastic - clear, with great nose, crisp flavors, and a nice finish. You know it's a good wine because you don't have to chill the hell out of it to hide the imperfections - it's just good. The actual tasting experience was ok... the guy doing the pouring was more along the lines of a used car salesman. But at the end of the day the wine was very good. I'm glad we took some home! If you only have time for one winery, this is the one. The wines are consistently good and very fairly priced, considering the quality. They put a new addition with a very large, clear pane of glass in the door. Though this was my first stop on my brief wine tour, I fully walked face first into it. From phenomenal riesling's and other low residual sugar whites to really enjoyable pinots and red blends, this winery can't be beat. A great stop for anyone enjoying a relaxing day tasting, but even a better stop for someone looking to add to their wine collections. You won't be sorry you stopped here. I'll keep this brief and to the point. It's no secret that wine from the Finger Lakes region generally is something of an acquired taste. Wiemar is a glorious exception. It produces the best wine we have had in the area, easily the equal of many better-known houses from California and France. We recently visited the winery and bought cases of the Curvee Brut 2012 sparkling wine, the Cabernet Franc 2015, and the Chardonnay 2014 - all of which are very well made, delicious, and reasonably priced considering the high quality. Here's a thought: a perfect day in the Seneca Lake area can be had on Route 14 with a visit to Wiemar and dinner at nearby Ports Café. read more

This was the highlight of our wine-tasting trip along Seneca Lake. There was about a ten minute wait to get into the tasting room, but rest assured that it was all worth it, as the staff really take their time to ensure that you have their undivided attention and that your experience is amazing. Each party gets their own tasting table and tasting room associate. The wines were all delicious and one could really understand how they got all of their accolades and recognition. Our tasting room associate guided us knowledgeably through the tasting and gave us so much cool info regarding the wines, tasting notes and vineyard. He also showed us the vine grafts the vineyard creates, to fulfill the demand for vinifera-labrusca grafts. We purchased a bottle of dry Riesling and dry gewurztraminer. We arrived early as we had a fulls schedule for the day and had the place to ourselves. We chose the Finger Lakes region for our "mini-moon" and were not disappointed! Eric was our host that morning and walked us through all the different varieties. He took the time to ask us questions about what we liked and explained the wines we tasted in detail. Maybe update your website to advise of this...Staff will tell you that they can't have "crying babies here" , AFTER we took our child to the car without instruction from the server and within only 2 minutes of being seated outside. The rest of our group stayed, ordered our wine, and then when they were dropped off our wine with NO description of the wines. Dropped off the wrong wine, which is fine- mistakes happen, but she said "it's fine, it's whatever, i will get you what you want" manager comped our wines, which was appreciated. Disappointed in the unprofessionalism of the server, and the lack of compassion for those of us with children who want to enjoy a nice afternoon at the winery with family. read more

This is One of the best wineries in the Finger Lakes wine region. The tasting room is a converted barn it is very cute. For the quality of the wine it is reasonably priced. They produce very solid wines and no matter which one you taste they are all good quality. The staff let you know what restaurants to go to and are very nice. We go whenever in town. read more

Continuing the region's strong association with spectacular white wine, Hermann J. Wiemer cements itself as one of the best in the whole FLX region. After attending the Summer of Riesling in Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany, my girlfriend and I were shocked to discover that on that back of our "Summer of Riesling" shirts there was a timeline that recorded Herman J. Wiemer planting his grapes in the Finger Lakes in the 1970s. So if the Germans along the Rhein River Valley, where Riesling was born, think it notable to list Herman J Wiemer, than he must be doing something right. My girlfriend and I walked the first hour they opened and already there were a handful of people doing tastings. We were warmly greeted by Oskar, one of the current owners, who immediately called us wine geeks and led us to the tasting room in the refurbished barn. Our pourer was extremely knowledgeable in the wines and expertly walked us through the tasting ($5 for 5). I'm forgetting the actual order we went in, but I'll comment on the the notable ones (re: I'm going to talk about all of them). The Frost Cuvee table wine was a really unique blended wine with good acidity and spice you'll either love or be indifferent to. The 2014 Gewürztraminer has an inviting floral smell and quite a bit of spice. Finally, we come to the Rieslings; as of our tasting in September there were four on the list in the regular $5 tasting (they do have a dry Riesling flight for $8 with more), going from dry to sweet. The first two were the 2015 Dry Riesling and the 2015 Reserve Dry Riesling. With nearly identical residual sugar of 0.9% and 0.8% respectively, the difference lies in the complexity. The first dry Riesling is crisp and vibrant, an easy drinking wine that still offers plenty of balance and would pair really nice with almost any food. The Reserve Riesling offers a bit of a different spin - the flavors are a bit fuller and well rounded, still crisp and extremely well balanced. Next was the Semi-Dry Riesling, which is sweeter than the first two (residual sugar 2.2%) and more fruit-forward. Last was the Late Harvest Riesling, with the highest residual sugar at 5.2%. I usually dislike wines with residual sugar this high (usually 1% is my cut-off), but here I am, really loving this wine because the high sugar blends so well with the high acidity, resulting in a refreshing minerality that makes it a must-try. We ended up purchasing this one and the first dry Riesling. So of course Herman J. Weimer lived up to my expectations. In fact, the unpretentious and friendly winery exceeded them, and although it has been a while, these match anything we tasted in Germany. A must visit on Seneca - just go early or late to avoid the crowds. read more

Our favorite vineyard of the 8 or so we went to. This one, including the three we went to that are situated on Keuka Lake had the best wines. This one felt much less commercial and touristy; they didn't offer any discount on wine tastings for buying bottles or on bulk purchases. Their bottles run a little bit more expensive than most of the other wineries but the quality shows and thus, makes it worth the extra $5-$10 a bottle. I believe we got the Dry Riesling, Frost Cuvee, and Gewurtztraminer. As far as the tasting, we chose our wines and were walked through each one in a specified ordered which gave a nice flow to the experience. We were welcomed to walk around the vineyard and it looked like they also offered food pairing tastings as well. Definitely check this place out! read more

Pretentious and far too serious for the quality of wine being offered. Being a big big fan of Gewurztraminer I had high expectations but my tastings fell flat. They were decent but not at all in my top 5 list. And their pricing is outrageous for the area. The building is cool, though. The guy that walked us to the tasting room actually walked us through some of their processing and explained some of the upcoming work they were planning to do, which was nice. But once we got to the tasting room it just felt a little cold and uninviting, and the wines did not speak for themselves. read more

Everything about our visit was exceptional. You approach an idyllic farmhouse/barn overlooking the vineyard and are promptly greeted by a member of the staff. Their tasting arrangements are personalized to a ratio of 2 groups:1 tasting room staff member so you are free to ask questions and learn about the vineyard, process and wines. Our server was extremely friendly and knowledgable, it just felt like a natural conversation. The wines were all amazing, and although they do lean white wine friendly, their Cab Franc was out of this world. Personal favorite however was the Gewurzt, dry, hint of sweetness, floral forward, spice was delicious. The only vineyard we went to that I would say is a CAN'T miss! read more

This was easily a contender for best winery of the weekend. The grounds are immaculate, and the experience from start to finish feels much higher end than other Finger Lakes wineries. Beginning with the "welcome wine" on the patio before you're even brought in to taste the staff is welcoming and professional. All of the wines are well done - we even stayed following the tasting to enjoy a glass of wine on one of the patios, and bought several bottles on the way out. Some great wines! Especially the single vineyard Rieslings, Gewurztraminer, and late harvest wines, in my opinion. Some of the best wines in the Finger Lakes. On the other hand, I wish the prices were not so high and I have found ordering to have its glitches. I have had problems logging in several times and recently found a different name and address associated with my account (an unfamiliar name from another state). Though the latter problem was fixed, it made me glad I did not store my credit card information online. My prior purchases still do not show up in my account. My advice is to keep track of your purchases so you can document them when you hit the 24-bottle threshold. Despite the prices and account problems, however, I will still buy Wiemer wines in the future. read more

I was attracted by the good reviews on Yelp as well as by a glowing review in the NYT's from a couple years back and was not disappointed. It isn't the biggest winery we have ever visited or the most plush. But the staff is welcoming and the wine is good. We only had time to visit one winery and I'm glad we picked this one. read more
