Herman's Boy is the awesomest place for tea and tea accoutrement you will ever find. Every time I come home to Michigan I stop in and stock up. Walking in to their store is like what I imagine walking into heaven would be like. It has the rich, deep smell of coffee as well as more subtle hints of tea and baked goods. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the overall vibe of the store is homey and welcoming. They have an amazing wall of loose leaf teas that I could spend hours looking at. It's hard to nail down what my favorite tea I've gotten from them is, because they have all been fantastic. However, I think the Plum Berry White Tea is as good as it gets. I am an office manager and I make tea for all of the people in my office, and some favorites from them have been the Wild Cherry Black Tea, both the Raspberry and Blackberry Green Tea, and the Blueberry Rooibus. Considering the extremely high quality of their tea, it is very reasonably priced. They also have all sorts of kettles, tea pots, steepers, and travel mugs with steepers inside. If you are tea nut like me, you can find everything you've ever dreamed of. I can't recommend this place enough. I live in Chicago, which has a lot of amazing places to buy tea, and they don't even come close to this place. I firmly believe it is the best place in the world to buy tea from. read more

This place is great, and is about my favorite place in the world for food. if I can get it at Herman's Boy, I don't get it anywhere else. Their coffee puts Starbucks to shame for about 70% of the price. Their sandwiches are delicious and ridiculously cheap. I've only ever gotten a couple of things there that weren't fantastic. I'm glad it's kind of an unknown place, because I wouldn't want them to get more crowded. Be warned, it is kind of intimidating at first. Their service system is kind of stupid (only one person can help you even if you want different things in different areas of the store) and there is often a mass of customers just standing around in a mob waiting for orders. If they aren't busy, then they're all in your face as soon as you walk in the door. The staff is always very friendly though. I just created a Yelp account for the specific purpose of writing this review. My family lived in Rockford from before I was born until I left for college. Over those years I made many memories downtown Rockford, and Herman's Boy makes an appearance in so many of them. I have always loved this place and take advantage of every opportunity I have to go back! Everything is consistently terrific from the coffee, to the baked goods (been a dedicated fan of the blueberry bagels for over two decades now!), kitchenware, cheese, you name it. There wouldn't be a line out the door every morning and lunch period if this place wasn't something special. Those periods can feel hectic so be patient, it's worth fighting the crowd! read more

I was going to start a diet today. But I ran across this place and had to get a pumpkin spice latte, and some homemade cookies. Everything here looks incredible. This place is very quaint and like stepping into the mythical Mayberry in the simpler 1950s. Lots of coffees, cheeses, fudge, plus just a great old fashioned atmosphere. I've been here for coffee a few times, but today I finally tried their famous bagel wrapped hot dog. I think I saw them microwaving it, which isn't my preferred way to heat food because of the well-known tendency to turn things into a styrofoam consistency. In this case, it wasn't heated enough, but I didn't complain because I'd rather have lukewarm than styrofoam. I like the coffee at Starbucks better, but I'm quite the coffee snob, but I really thought the bagel dog was tasty, plus this place has a super polite staff and the overall experience is unique. read more

There are countless reasons to come here for, these are my highlights. The incredible on site roasted coffee's, I recommend the Italian Roast Sumatra for a real nice full dark flavor. All of them are great, atleast the ones that I have tried (about 8 varieties). The 10 year cheddar cheese is absolutely divine!!!! It is one of the best things I have ever tasted in my life! Great tea selection and wonderful array of tea accessories as well. Until my mom passed away the Pecan Rolls were a staple on Christmas morning. Warm these guys up with some butter on top, now that's some good stuff. There are plenty more reasons to stop here if your ever in Rockford. I go here about every Friday to get a Pecan Roll. I love this place and the prices are very affordable. During lunch I normally enjoy the Chefs Salad which is huge for under $6! They have classes you can take during the summer and they have a few BBQ's that you can enjoy and taste test the pulled pork. This place is family owned the service is always excellent! I would still give this place five stars but I don't like that they harp on you about using your credit card for items under $5. I would just think in this day n age no matter the cost you should be able to use your card. I rarely keep cash on me and I am in there weekly! read more

I called to place an order for pickup because of the mask rules. I'm medically unable to wear a mask, and was trying to respect their rules and be understanding of what they may be pressured or required to do, depending on the day and latest executive order. I. The past I've enjoyed coming here because people have been super nice. This time they were not. The girl who brought out my food was rude and then acted annoyed that I wanted change and that she had to go back in to take care of that. I have a lot of patience for places being busy and try to work well with the new rules, but I'm tired of the new rules being an excuse to be rude to me. I live here in Rockford and would love to support local but won't be going back unless employees can learn to have basic politeness. read more

One of my favorite places in Rockford, MI. It smells AMAZING when you walk in and is just a very cool and unique place! It's also a good place to get gifts, such as ground coffee. There's a lot of kitchenware for sale throughout the place. There is also lots of seating if you want to sit down and enjoy a delicious bagel sandwich. The food is very reasonably priced and I would often get a bagel sandwich (with ham and cheese) before going to work. From what I remember, it was only about $1.50 or $1.75. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the bagel dogs. I am not a big hot dog fan, but I can eat an entire bagel dog. The bagel part is very doughy and delicious. Herman's Boy is definitely a place worth stopping in and once yo try it, you'll definitely want to go back! read more

We love Herman's Boy - on the weekends, the lines are very long, but the staff is so efficient and friendly that you are sure to be in and out just as soon as you'd like to be. Although, the smells are so amazing that you probably won't want to leave! They have freshly roasted coffee beans, an amazing selection of teas, chocolates, deli food and a great selection of kitchenware and fun baking/cooking utensils to peruse while you are waiting for your order. A very charming atmosphere. Great service and delicious breakfast bagels! Coffee was delicious and the price was shockingly cheap. Getting this exact same breakfast would have cost me twice the price in the city. I did have some suggestions. They could streamline service by having signature sandwiches vs listing their many many ingredients. It surprisingly makes things easier for the customer too. Then having a person who runs the coffee grinder station for their delicious beans during peek hours would reduce their line by half. Also if they dialed in their food offerings to what sells the most it could streamline their counter time as well as reduce waste. Have ten signature sandwiches with your amazing ingredients. 5 breakfast, 5 lunch. And let those hard working servers accept tips! They deserve them. You are custom making each item and order. That is not only timely but difficult. This deserves tips. I respect the "no tips necessary just come back", but your product is impeccable and your service is kind.. That is reason enough to come back.. Take the perk. I'm sure your service staff would appreciate splitting them at the end of a demanding shift. Overall I enjoyed this charming place. read more

CAUTION!!! Herman's Boy will turn you into an irreversible coffee snob. It has been several years since I lived in Grand Rapids, however, we couldn't break the Herman's Boy Coffee habit. We started our Herman's Boy habit back in the day when it used to be The Melting Pot. We have tried other "gourmet" coffee where we live, but its just not to the quality & fair price of Herman's Boy. We have it shipped to our home in Florida, and have a good inventory system in place to submit an order before the supply runs out, or else the punishment of drinking grocery store coffee becomes too much to bear. What a unique local treasure! We absolutely love this place and I often take out-of-towners here for breakfast or lunch. Excellent coffee, cinnamon rolls, pecan sticky buns, bagel options. You can also pick up some trail mix, fudge, chicken salad - you never know what you'll find, but I guarantee it'll be something you can't find anywhere else. The setting is an old rambling house with many unique nooks and crannies that make it ideal for a coffee clutch, women's group or long time friends catching up. The only think that keeps me from rating them a 5 is the often disorganized ordering process. Usually takes longer than it needs to and never quite sure who is next in line. Having said that, it's often local young people working so I grant them some grace. :-) Also, the other fantasticals that are HB make up for the extra 5 minutes. You won't be disappointed. read more
