Outstanding customer service. Took him my 35-year old cuckoo clock from Germany that stopped working. He cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted it -- fortunately it needed no parts -- and it's working perfectly now. He showed me some things I didn't know and gave me an estimate of the current value (I had no idea it appreciated that much!) I accidentally knocked it over a week later before rehanging it. My husband and I read the reviews before bringing my watch in for a link removal. Given the positive reviews and certifications we were confident that the watchsmith would have the tools and expertise to service my watch (without damage). However, when we arrived, we were not greeted with kindness but with disdain; the watchsmith asked why we were there as if we mistakenly walked into a private residence. My husband told the watch smith that we needed two links removed from my watch. Upon receiving my timepiece, he immediately raced to the back to retrieve what we thought would be the tools needed for service. To our surprise, he used different loupes to verify the watches authenticity, which was very off-putting as patrons looked on. Eh, No big deal, right? Well, that's when we realized his prejudices were more apparent than we imagined. Not once did he ask about the preferred links for removal, nor did he measure my wrist to make suggestions. As he examined the watch, my husband reminded the watch smith that we only needed a quote and time estimate for service to the watch bracelet. He interrupts, stating that he wants to "see if my watch is real". My husband and I both felt insulted by the remark, and because of the insinuation that we didn't belong and arrived with a fake watch, my husband told him we were leaving. This nearly led to an escalated situation because he initially refused to hand over my watch, stating, no, it's fine, I had to check. Perplexed at his idiocy and arrogance, my husband grabbed my watch and we proceeded to leave. As we're leaving he continues to yell the watch is fine, the watch is fine. By that time we were certain that we would spend our money elsewhere. We left and scheduled an appointment with Lenkersdorfer. We own quite a few high end watches and was hopeful about this location to service our collection but following this experience we will not return to Herndon Clock & Watch Co. and recommend that potential customers do their due diligence before settling on this location. I had swum with the seal in my watch open, so it had taken on a bit of water. When Mr. Lam opened it up, we saw an oily black coating covering all of the gears and other parts. I thought it was probably beyond saving, but Mr. Lam worked his magic and now it looks and is running like new. Don't trust anyone else with your Rolex--he's the real deal!! read more

Much like the first reviewer I picked up a second hand Rolex Turn-o-Graph for a bangin' price. Unfortunately when it arrived I noticed that my automatic watch wasn't so automatic, it required daily winding to maintain time keeping. I waited several years to service the watch because, well I liked it, and didn't want to send it to an official Rolex service center for 6-8 weeks and have to wear my less nice back up watch. Plus I was worried I would receive a massive bill for the service. My experience with Liljenquist & Beckstead at Tysons II with my fathers antiquated Omega Seamaster was a costly venture, and frankly, while i'm sure they did a fine job on the service, I wasn't thrilled that my watch wasn't polished, and more or less looked the same as when I dropped it off. Despite the fact I requested that the dial be refurbished, and the case polished and new hands be fitted and agreed to their cost, which was $700. They only charged $500, but yet didn't do as I requested in regards to the dial or hands. So after several years, I finally decided to have the watch serviced. I did my research and learned all about proper watchmaking. Mr. Lam is a Certified 21st Century Watchmaker (CW21), which all indications lead me to believe that's the top qualification you can have as a watchmaker. As such, all CW21's having passed rigorous examination CW21's are therefore qualified to have an official Rolex parts account. So this, and the previous reviewer gave me confidence that Herndon Watch & Clock was up to the job. Anyhow, Mr. Lam informed me there were broken gears and over lubrication that occured whenever the watch was previously serviced. After a short 3-week waiting period, things are better than ever before. My white gold bezel is straight Bling, both the case as well as the bracelet came back with a glowing luster, far better than it ever was during my ownership. He also mentioned my mainspring was broken, and this was a common problem with the 3135 movement. So while the service wasn't cheap, I believe it was a far better value than a proper full Rolex service. No regrets that's for sure. I brought in a watch brand that they do not usually perform work on. but the store owner Dung agreed to help repair a loose glow-in-dark dot on the dial. While performing this fix, there was a complication with the set lever re-insertion. After some difficulty, Dung thought the watch would need to be sent to the manufacturer for service. However, he continued to try to fix it on his days off, and finally did. Not only did he avoid extended delay for shipping to manufacturer, he even met me during non-store hours to return the watch so I could have it for an upcoming trip. He was able to fix my watch in less than 48 hours! And he was very respectful and professional Throughout. Once again Dong restored my Rolex back to perfection. I have a 1993 no date submariner that was losing about 12 to 13 seconds per day. Dong restored it for me in 2 weeks, the movement is + 1 second one per day no matter how I wear it. The bracelet and head has been restored back to original specifications. Was looking for a local shop to repair a clock that had been in the family for 30 years. I was excited to find the Herndon Clock and Watch Co. I headed over to get an estimate on repairs. I arrived and Mr. Lam asked me if there was much sentimental value in the clock. I explained that there was, and I was interested in having it repaired. I could sense he didn't really want my business on a repair job for this clock, and perhaps would rather I buy a replacement from his shop. He then indicated they were very busy and it would cost $345 and I would need to leave the clock with him for 12 months--BEFORE he could tell me what would need to be done with it!! I thanked him and told him I wasn't interested and left. Later that day, my clock was tuned up, lubricated in key locations, and I also received a friendly education in clock care and maintenance. This fantastic service was provided by the fine folks at The Clock Shop of Vienna. Better yet, it was all done for $20 in 20 minutes. I cannot speak to Mr. Lam's repair skills as no work was performed, and it seems like other reviewers have been quite satisfied. I suspect that Mr. Lam does an excellent job with watches, seeing as how he is a Twenty First Century Certified Watchmaker. I am left to wonder, why not just say my clock is not something he would be able to work on rather than quote me such an absurd price and time?!? My experience was quite disappointing. read more

Real watchmakers are extremely hard to find. Dong is the best there is. Rolex certified, with all of the tools and instruments required by Rolex to service their watches. Dong has fixed my 1960 Rolex President, my 1960 Datejust, my 2000 Yachtmaster, AND my 1990s Tags with precision, care, and overall excellence. I got a great local deal on a 10-year old Rolex GMT Master II Pepi. It was in decent shape (90% ish) in terms of condition (lots of surface scratches on the bracelet, a couple of small dings and a small discoloration on the case). But it was keeping poor time, and had never been serviced. I struggled with the decision to use the the official Rolex Service Center in NYC or Mr. Lam at Herndon Watch and Clock who has a coveted Rolex parts account. I ended up choosing Mr. Lam -- and I am glad I did. Mr. Lam is an earnest Rolex collector (he showed me a few of his pieces), a CW21 (highest level watchmaker) with 31 years of experience, and has Rolex and Omega parts accounts (and others). He explained to me the difficulty of getting (and keeping) a Rolex parts account. I researched him -- checked references - Googled him, and confirmed his story about the Rolex account on various watch forums. He took my watch -- gave me a receipt noting the serial, bracelet number and clasp number. Two weeks later -- he gave me back the watch looking absolutely stunning (basically factory new) and keeping great time. All backed by a 2-year warranty. Great service from a genuine and honest craftsman (in a dying craft) that deserves the opportunity to earn your business, and a great local resource for the DC-area WIS (Watch Idiot Savant) community that deserves support from Rolex fans (and others). read more

Be careful! You might want to get a second opinion or estimate before leaving an expensive watch here for repair. I brought my 1991 Rolex in for repair as it suddenly stopped running. Given its age, I wasn't surprised. The mainspring was broken and it need lubrication. The estimate I was given by Dong was $500.00. And he tried to sell me a new crystal for $200.00 as there was a tiny scratch. From checking a few other sources, this is rather high. When I returned home, I noted on the ticket, the estimate was $550.00. Just because someone has a Rolex doesn't mean they are oblivious to how much things cost. The watch was promised in three weeks however when I called to come pick it up, I was told that it wasn't quite ready. A week later, dong called to let me know it was ready. When I called to confirm that I was coming and that there was a discrepancy in the verbal and Written estimate and that I wasn't planning on paying a penny more than $500. I was told that I must have misunderstood and that $50 was "no big deal." I said , Great! Then you will only charge me the $500 then! He finally conceded. I would not go back or recommend this place. read more

The lady was unfriendly and asked if I wanted to leave it (she didn't even know yet that I had two) and pick it up tomorrow. I said "for a battery"? Then she said they could do it now; she was just asking. I have never had anyone ask this before. I was the only customer in the shop. He did both watches in a few minutes. I was not offered a receipt. I then asked if he could come to my home to repair my grandfather clock, but he said he doesn't do that anymore. He was not friendly at all. Brought an early 20th century French mantle clock to Herndon Clock for an evaluation, since the clock would not run for very long. He indicated that the clock would need to be thoroughly cleaned/oiled, etc., which meant taking everything apart. Two shocking pieces of my visit, were the price to do this, which was $300+, and then the wait time, which was three months. When I balked at the amount, and the wait time, he said that it was very detailed, and time consuming work to take the clock apart, clean, and oil it, and the three month time frame was standard for clock repair. There wasn't much I could do, so I said ok. When I called after three months, Mr Lam said that it should be ready by the end of the week. When I called back, it stil wasn't ready, and had to wait a few more days. When I finally picked up the clock, it was working, and has continued to work very well, and for a 100+ year old clock, that's saying something. I can't argue with Mr Lam's clock repair expertise, but the delay, and waiting can be a bit irritating. To me, it almost seemed like in the three months that he had the clock, nothing was done, and then when I called, he began to work on it. Overall, repair/knowledge repair very good - customer service, not so much. read more

I have a chiming clock for my mantelpiece which I got 30 years ago in Germany. The clock is of German craftsmanship with a polished brass exterior and a glass dome. The battery operated clock keeps perfect time. Until a few years ago, I never experienced any problems but the chimes suddenly stopped. I brought the clock to the Herndon Clock and Watch store to be checked. The owner looked at it, turned it a few times around, and told me that this clock was most likely damaged beyond repair. He offered to "open" it up and check inside but said that this was not worthwhile because of the inferior quality of the clock. To give emphasis to his statement, he carelessly pushed the clock around. Luckily, I had the spinning mechanism secured. I informed him about the origin and quality of the clock but he seemed unconvinced. I left the shop and got a second opinion. That clock shop owner took one look, replaced the battery, and miraculously the chimes worked again! Apparently, when the battery is low the clock keeps time but abandons the chime. He polished the brass and he didn't charge me for the battery. He noticed right away that my clock was German made and of good quality. I guess the guy at Herndon Clock and Watch just wanted to sell me something new. That is not professional. read more

Excellent! I brought my Omega Seamaster to Mr. Lam's shop because I found Omega's direct repair pricing to be outrageous -- the watch needed a regular maintenance service (cleaning and lubrication), and Omega wanted almost $600 plus shipping. I found Herndon Clock & Watch through a Google search, and saw that a number of previous customers had left nothing but very positive reviews. When I stopped by the shop on a weekday afternoon, I knew I had found the right place: Mr. Lam is a Rolex- and Omega-certified watchmaker, and he was amazingly helpful, opening the watch right in front of me to show me what was wrong, and saying he would do a proper inspection before giving me an estimate. I left the watch with him, and a couple of days later he called with a quote that was a little more than half what Omega was charging. I approved the work, and another 10 days later Mr. Lam called to say the job was done. When I picked up the watch, I was stunned. It looked brand new! Mr. Lam had not only repaired and reconditioned the automatic movement, but he also buffed out all the various scratches and gouges in the steel case and bracelet. He did a really fantastic job! I've had the watch back for two weeks now and it hasn't lost more than a second or two since then -- making it actually more accurate than it was when I first purchased it in 2008. Kudos, Mr. Lam! You're a true master, and when it comes time for my Omega to have its regular maintenance (or for my daily-beater TAG to have its battery replaced), I'll know exactly where to go. I took my Edwardian era wind-up watch here for a cleaning and repair for about $250.00 because it was stopping and not keeping time. The gentleman there, assuming Mr. Lam or owner, assured me he could fix it and there was a 1-year warrantee on the work. A month after the repair and cleaning, it started slowing down. Then, it started stopping after being wound completely. I took it back during the warrantee period explaining what was wrong. I was assured it would be taken care of. I was also told that I was winding it wrong (there's a wrong way?). I told them that I know how to wind a watch, not over-wind, and I also know when a watch isn't working properly. I picked up the watch later and he told me that he didn't do anything on the inside, again, I wasn't winding it properly. Clearly, Herndon Clock does not stand by a warrantee and blames the owner when the work wasn't done correctly. Now I have a beautiful, non-functioning watch, just a piece of jewelry and I'm out $250.00. Very disappointed in the service here and will find a reputable watch repair business elsewhere. read more

I have been taking my Tag Heuer to Dong, the proprieter at Herndon Watch and Clock, for years with great satisfaction. I am a diver and on my recent dive trip to Grand Cayman my Tag imploded. This was a first after several services at Dong's shop and several dive trips. Dong took my watch and rebuilt it on warranty. Dong stood behind his work bringing my watch up to "new" standards. Frankly I was a little apprehensive taking my imploded watch to him after my Cayman trip, not knowing the outcome of his response, but Dong did not hesitate to make me whole with a rebuilt Tag and I am grateful. read more

These guys are HORRIBLE. First, they charge $15 for a watch battery and most of the time you have to leave your watch and pick it up later. Total rip off. Kim's in the KMART shopping center charges $6.75 installed immediately. Anyway, I dropped off a few watches the first time I went there, picked up the next day, and one had a huge scratch on the back from opening it. Unbelievable. I didn't know about Kim's at the time, so I went back to drop off a few more watches for batteries. I was told to come back the next day. I also mentioned to them about the scratch the last time, and the lady was really put off. So, she had the main guy come out and inspect each watch before working on them. Then she proceeded to put the watches in a ziplock bag without protecting them from scratching each other! I said, aren't you going to put them in separate bags so they don't scratch? She seemed extremely annoyed and begrudgingly did what I asked. Both the guy from the back and the woman out front are extremely rude and make it seem like they are doing you a favor by working on your watches. The young guy that works there is a total dud too. None of them have any customer service skills whatsoever. read more
