This is a review for the Heroes Martial Arts located in East San Jose and Los Gatos as we haven't had a chance to check out all locations recently but I'm feeling confident they are run well under the leadership of Professor Gumby. My 13 year old outgrew her youth classes at the Campbell location (formerly Samurai BJJ) and we were lucky enough to discover amazing instructors Chuck and Nick who offer teen classes in East San Jose while the wonderful instructor Mike just started the teens class in Los Gatos. Not only competent and skillful with their BJJ abilities, they teach very well with patience and their own unique styles and personalities that enable my daughter to learn and adapt to what works best for her. The current classes MWF at East San Jose have strong attendance and teens from different ranges of skills and sizes and genders make it challenging and engaging for my daughter. The Los Gatos one just opened so we are taking advantage of more semi private attention until word gets out of how awesome Coach Mike is! Facilities are clean, well-kept and parking is easy enough to find at both locations. If you want a space that is safe, respectful, welcoming and empowering for both youth and adults to come and become solid martial arts practitioners, you need to check this out! I love this place. Super friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. Gumby is super patient, especially when I don't get the movements or certain technique the day of which is great. Their beginners program is very thorough and not your typical "get your ass beat and turned into a pretzel on your first day" experience you may get as a newbie going into BJJ. Gumby even has a whole power point revolved around the fundamentals and techniques he teaches. His other instructors are friendly and patient and the other students are also welcoming. While I've never trained at Heroes, I feel my story warrants a review. Yesterday, I was involved in a bike on bike accident right outside of the Heroes Martial Arts studio. Both of us were going pretty fast, and while the other rider appeared uninjured, I sustained serious injuries that sent me to the ER. I was wearing a helmet and am very grateful that I was (it could have been much worse). Within seconds of the accident, Alan "Gumby" Marques and another wonderful Good Samaritan rushed up to us to ensure that we were okay. Alan and the woman (I am sorry I didn't catch her name) stayed with me until I was loaded into the ambulance. Afterwards, Alan was kind enough to store my bike in the Heroes Martial Arts studio until I was able to retrieve it. I am not sure what I would have done had they not come to my rescue. True to their name, yesterday Alan and the bystander were my Heroes. Based on what happened yesterday, I am not at all surprised that you have a 5 star rating. May be a bit biased because I've been coming here since 2015 but Heroes is a great place to train BJJ. There's a ton of classes to fit your schedule and now there's quite a few different black belt instructors teaching. I joined Heroes because there was an early morning class which fit my work schedule when I first moved to SJ. Everyone is pretty chill and Gumby's style is pretty chill, for lack of a better word. Gumby the Head Instructor is a great teacher. The facility is all new and clean. I didn't have any grappling experience before I started here, but Gumby's instrcutions are so simple and easy that you can follow everything he teaches. The only problem is remembering it when ur actually sparring haha. All the instructor's Gumby, Canada,Keith and Mike are all very helpful and try to help in any way they can. If you want to learn BJJ then this place is the way to go. You really have to work hard if u want to be good. Unless your a natural, but all the instruction is top notch and on point. We start off with running, then pushups, situps, legups,head bops which hurt like hell(my neck has never been so sore the next day after training) and snake manuevers, then Gumby shows Basic Fundamentals that is our base of BJJ.(which I still need to work on) It's not Easy Gumby's Motto is Train Hard, Fight Hard, Party Hard. I guess it depends who you are though. Some people progress faster than others. Just Stay motivated and it will all come. Gumby keeps everybody motivated and says that mat time is the only way to get better. After fundamentals he shows us more advanced moves and we work on them with a partner. More Drill and more Drills. Then the funnest and most tiring part of class. Sparring! Sparring is the best part of class. People are very aware and cautious here. There are a lot of strong guys, but they don't try to go all out and injure you. There are no crazy ego's and everybody just want's to learn and get better. It's a great atmosphere! I actually belong to another gym but we have a lot of Heroes members who comes by my location. I was invited over by meeting them when they'd drop in. The atmosphere here is phenomenal. Gumby was very kind to allow me to work with his members and he always is very polite by greeting me. I haven't gotten a chance to take a class here on a weekday since I only drop in to get some comp training with their team now and then. However, I can however say that they breed some of the toughest competitors in the area and I can't even begin to explain how honored I feel to get to work with them. They're so welcoming and I try my best to bring what I know to the table to work with them the same way give me a chance to test what I've learn. As a chick myself, I have quickly bonded with their women's team. This is a great gym with great people and I'm very thankful to be able to cross-train with these guys. read more

Gumby is an excellent Jiu Jitsu coach and is very knowledgable, patient and personable. It seems to be the norm at Heroes for more and more new people to start their training and within a few short months are comfortably training right along with guys that have been training for years! Very impressive. Although I have wrestled for many years I must say that Ed is the best wrestling coach I have ever trained under. He is absolutely passionate about the sport and explains even the most basic techniques in great detail and usually has an entertaining story to go along with it! At each practice I learn something new that I have been missing in my arsenal for YEARS. Shozo and the San Jose State crew that help out with Judo are amazing to work with. If you know anything about Judo you know that Judoka from all over the country and all over the world come to San Jose State to train for National, International and World Competition. To start off with, Gumby is the man. When I started training at Heroes, I was already a purple belt and had been training 5 years at that point. I'd recently moved to the Bay Area, and was looking for a new academy to call home. I've visited quite a few places before arriving at Heroes, as I moved to Mountain View which is a bit of commute, especially in the 5pm traffic. For those who don't know, NorCal and the Bay Area specifically is one of the best places in country to train. There's a ton of great gyms and instructors, many of which originate in Ralph Gracie's Mountain View academy. Gumby, the owner of Heroes, is one of the OG of that academy, having received his black belt from Ralph in 2007. The thing I noticed the most, dropping in the first time, was the quality of the facilities. They have a *huge* mat space, high ceilings, private changing rooms and even a shower (for me that was a first in a BJJ gym, and I now can't do without it). After a few training sessions, it became clear to me how much of an upgrade training at Heroes was compared to my previous academy and some of the others I visited. Gumby has an incredibly well structured curriculum, instead of the commonly found "technique of the day" style you see in a lot of places. He communicates the details of each position and technique very clearly, while making sure to also explain the "why" as well. He mixes humor often into his instruction, which helps keep the atmosphere light and enjoyable during class. Which brings me to the most important reason I chose Heroes as my home academy for almost 4 years - the team. Gumby has attracted an incredible group of people to train at his gym over the years. Everybody is extremely friendly and accommodating, as well as presenting a wide variety of training styles and unique challenges on the mat. I'm proud to now call many of those people friends, and still keep in touch even after having moved to SoCal earlier this year. For the female crowd - Heroes recently started having women-only classes. So if you're worried about training with men in a contact combat sport - you might find this option appealing, at least to start off with. On top of all this, the training cost at Heroes is extremely competitive compared to the area. While this was not a big factor for me, it's another point of consideration, especially for people who might be trying BJJ for the first time. Heroes also has free trial sessions, so make sure to take advantage of that. TL;DR - Whether you're a rank beginner or a seasoned practitioner, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place to train in the South Bay area. Now go train! read more

All the other instructors and classmates are also extremely helpful and easy going. No egos! This is an excellent place to begin, if you want to try BJJ for the first time. It is very low key, so you have the always great combination of talent without hoopla. It has an unusually large group of purple brown and black belts, who are usually generous with help. To me, the ethos of teaching someone else what you have learned is one of the more important aspects of martial arts. It shows appreciation for the people who took time with you, and it shows generosity and friendliness. Gumby, the main man, is also low-key. Not a show-off or bragger at all. Has his lessons well-organized. Pay attention to the details, because this is one of his strengths. These details make the difference between mediocre and great. The location is convenient if you live or work near downtown. The atmosphere of this place is calm and spacious. It could be tidier (less dusty and more organized), but there's nothing gross. To me, being clean and orderly is another important aspect of martial arts ethos. I have been training for several years, but mostly in striking. I started at Heroes after moving from LA area, where I trained at Big John McCarthy's. I checked a lot of places and did trial visits, and so far this has been the best. read more

I came to Heroes after being invited by my friend to come out and roll. As I walked in to the academy, I was pleasantly surprised to find out big and spacious the mat was. The pictures don't really do it justice how much mat space there is. I was greeted by owner/ head instructor Gumby and openly welcomed into the gym. The facility is top notch: Swain mats over 2400sqft, restrooms and private changing rooms, water fountain. I came as the team was getting their last training in before a tournament so Gumby worked mainly on fixing small mechanics. His teaching method is very methodical and detail oriented. I felt was very specific in his concept that he wanted to teach. I only expected to come for an open mat and I ended up staying for 2 and half hours. There are lots of choices in the Silicon Valley for Jiu-jitsu, but I highly recommend Heroes for anybody at any skill level. Not only for the great instruction and facility, but for the friendly environment as well. I will definitely come back to train here again! *Parking is kind of tough. I would factor in a little extra time if its your first time going there. read more

I came back to visit Heroes on a drop-in basis today after being away for 4 years (I moved away to finish college, otherwise would have never left). I was quickly reminded of the friendly nature of the students and head instructor Gumby. On top of being friendly, the students are also great training partners. I attended the fundamentals and drilling classes, in which the guillotine choke was taught with clear instruction and with great care for detail, as well as a solid set up and a sweep if the guillotine fails. And of course we did the guard pass drill (a staple of this academy). I also stayed for the sparring as well, it was both fun and challenging. No one treated me like an outsider, I felt respected at all times while there. The instructor is a long time friend and training partner of mine that goes by the name Gumby. He is the most experienced instructor when it comes to teaching and coaching in the downtown area. Although he still competes from time to time he excels at passing on the techniques, principles, and concepts, of jiu-jitsu. Happened to be in the area walking. Came by this gym and stepped inside. Was met by the nicest kindest person you can imagine. I asked if I could observe. The instructor named Gumby was so kind and friendly. I let him know I got my black belt end of last year in DZR Juijitsu and recently was out of training due to medical issue. This gentleman again was so kind. He exuded compassion and love of life and confidance that jujitsuka strive for. He showed his students awesome techiques. The head instructor is Alan "Gumby" Marquez who is a blackbelt under Ralph Gracie and is the founder of OTM.com. There are going classes being taught everyday, but at different times either during lunchtime or evening and there is one day of no-gi on Wednesdays. There are also classes specifically for women and children that are being taught as well. There are other blackbelts that on the mat that are just as high caliber as Mr. Marquez that assists with teaching classes because of the large class sizes. It doesn't matter what rank you are in the sport of ju-jitsu because here everyone is treated as an equal. read more

This place is nothing short of awesome! I tried a couple other gyms but I immediately fell in love with Heroes. First of all, the instructors there are great. They have great demeanors and are approachable and funny. The lessons are organized, comprehensive and effective. I'm not the sharpest person and even I feel some semblance of progress day after day. Second, the people are way helpful and friendly! My first roll (eh actually all of them I guess) was punctuated by "oops"es and "sorry"s, but everybody I drilled and rolled with was cool about it! Not to mention, I owe a lot of my progress to the very nice and interesting people I have met there. Third, the place is freaking beautiful! Clean mats, brick walls, lots of space, windows, elevated ceilings, skylights. Such a simple, peaceful, clean gym makes it really easy to concentrate and focus. There's lots of mat space and even the walls have mats so there's little worry of crashing into someone or something. This review basically reiterates a lot of the points that people bring up. I admittedly don't know much about Gumby's background other that he trained at Ralph Gracie's, but he is an excellent instructor with an excellent team. I love it there! read more

Both instructors were great; Shozoo (Judo) was very social guy that had a great sense of humour and Ghumbi (Jiu Jitzu) was a warm, friendly taller guy that gave great instruction.
