Reserved a car six months in advance. When I arrived, there were no cars. Apparently, they know how to take a reservation but not keep a reservation. I called Hertz and Expedia and they were not helpful. The only attendant at Hertz was very helpful and finally someone showed up with an electric car. Kind of hard to find and it's annoying to hike up to actually get the cars. However, on the bright side they have very limited car selection so I've had good luck getting upgraded when I do get a car here. Staff is fine, and the office is tiny. Otherwise, the convenience factor is the only reason to use this Hertz. read more

The car we rented was dirty and had crumbs everywhere. the insurance they offer is expensive compared to the other companies. The windshield wiper in our car was broken and made the windshield even blurrier. This is a hazard since it was pouring the day we rented the car and we could barely see due to the broken windshields wipers. Customer service was nice but the girl had no idea what was going and what type of cars they had available. Generally not very helpful. We paid extra for a nice car but the car they had available was a few tiers lower than what we had paid for. We didn't get a reimbursement for getting a car that were a few tiers below what we reserved either. Location is convenient. I wouldn't come back unless it was a last resort. read more

Hertz is really fabulously mediocre. Their prices are middle-of-the-road, which, in today's internet-driven economy, means way too high for mediocre service. The cars are really nothing special - they have a whole fleet of Chevy HHRs (my automobile arch-nemesis) in every color, so make sure you've asked the rep what car you're getting before you get up there. I remember once the salesman was explaining to the customer, "Oh, it's a nice car, like a PT Cruiser." Yeah, right, buddy. It's like a hearse with no acceleration or rear-window visibility. ...but I digress. The location is convenient enough in Harvard Square, but you have to go to the top of a narrow little parking garage for your car and to return it. There is a Dunkin' Donuts next door, though, so you can chill while you're waiting for the employee to make good on that "Back in 15 minutes" sign that's often hanging on the door. read more

These negative reviews all sounds pretty plausible from my previous rental car experiences elsewhere, but they mostly seem to be more than a few years old. I have to say, I've rented there maybe half-a-dozen times over the past year (because I get a discount for personal trips as a work benefit, and it's close to home) and the experience has never been anything but exemplary-- never tried to screw me over a tank of gas; always mention (of course) but never try to give me the hard sell on BS upgrades like they did at the Somerville Ave Hertz; ZERO WAIT, like EVER for a car, where the first (and last time) I rented from Avis in central/university park I waited in line for two hours, and Enterprise on New St. made me wait for 30 minutes before driving me to another Enterprise location; and the staff is friendly, almost to a fault. I will say that I've gotten cars here where the exterior wasn't spotless, but the interiors have always been fine. I'm sure it's dead luck, but I never got a car that smells badly of smoke where it seemed like a much bigger problem at Enterprise and Avis. Maybe it was because I wasn't part of their rewards system? I know the neighborhood really well, so getting up to the 5th floor of the parking garage isn't a big deal for me, but I can understand how it would be frustrating for someone who didn't know-- more signage would really help. Overall, I'm happier with my rental experiences here than pretty much anywhere else. Hopefully I'm not simply using up a dwindling amount of luck getting good service here. read more

I used their services once and I was pretty happy, their prices are not the lowest, in fact there are a lot better deals out there than Hertz rent a car, but the car they give to me was more than OK and compensated for the highest price. I rented a Volkswagen Jetta 2009 model (I think) and the car was good and in almost spotless condition. But that is when the good things ends. After I returned the Jetta, I saw on their website that there are some "almost new" used cars on sale. I called one close friend to mine who knows thing or two about cars and we headed to hertz. The car that we looked was a 2008 Toyota Charmy. When I spoke on the phone they told me that the car was model year 2010, but as it turns out, actually was 2 years older than the salesman told me. Not only that, but further we noticed that the car was poorly repaired with serious engine problems. So be CAREFUL when going to buy a used car from them. read more

I rented a car, and I was delayed by a day getting back by losing the keys in the snow. So I went in to return it the next day, which Hertz provides for in their contract. I checked the hours of the rental car office, and made sure to get there a couple hours before closing to be on the safe side. Anticipating not being terrible long I dressed warmly but not for long stays in the snow, kissed my young daughter and assured her I would be no more than a half hour. I didn't take very warm gloves, which in this review serves as the gun being shown in the first act. I parked in the location's pay lot and headed down to the office with paperwork in hand. I arrived at a few minutes after 2pm to find the office closed and dark. I knocked a lot. I looked sad, and passersby stared. I suspect I looked like a confused Californian, which I was. I called the office, and after many rings it connected and then disconnected. I called every number I could find on my contract - I was on foot, and getting cold. My phone calls repeatedly failed to get through, and after a very long hold I did eventually get through to someone that transfered me to another department and another long hold. At this point I couldn't feel my fingers, a fact I shared with everyone I spoke to. One woman suggested I drive the car to Logan airport, saying it was "only 4 miles away." Four miles on foot in the Boston winter, across the Charles river, is a very long way indeed, and the car was in a pay lot and out of gas. I could not drop the keys through the mail slot, I was told. The location had closed early for the holidays- a fact not recorded on the website, the contract, or even the door of the location itself. I wasn't even told when I rented the car. There was nothing she could do for me, one woman said, and suggested I speak to a manager. I agreed and she said that she would get the manager of the Logan airport location- at which point she put me on hold, and the call disconnected. Finally reassured no one was going to show up and save me I moved into the slightly warmer parking lot and continued my phonecalls. At this point it was hard to type keys on my phone. Perhaps I have bad circulation or something, but that's not usually something required for car rental. "Over 25, driver's license, must have good circulation in case locked out of the office on a snowy day." Roadside assistance came through with an answer, after expressing some sympathy for my cold and increasingly panicky state. He would notify the location of my dilemma, and in the mean time I could lock the keys in the glove compartment. I might be charged to get the keys out again. I expressed the desire to have that charge reversed in what was by this point an undignified and squeaky voice. After following his instructions I headed back to where I was staying with my fingers an unhealthy looking red. Getting feeling back into them (with warm water) was surprisingly painful. This was actually customer service so bad that I was in physical pain. This was the first time in my life I've been abandoned in sub freezing temperatures by a rental car company, which was especially awful given I had followed all the rules to the tee. I know, being the heart of Harvard Square that I was of course never in any danger, but that seems like the lowest possible bar for customer service. I don't know what my final charges were, whether I was charged for one extra day or two, or for getting the keys out. ***BE WARNED**** If you return the car to the facility after hours, they will undoubtedly try to charge you for a tank of gas, even if you filled it up completely before returning it!!! ************ I have done two rentals with this location in the past three weeks. One for a trip up to VT for skiing and another to drive home to NY to see my family. Both times I have returned the car after hours since they actually shut down quite early. Both times, I filled the tank up completely before returning the car. The first time, I was charged ~45 for the fuel surcharge and service fee. At first I thought it was just a simple mixup. The second time, I was charged an additional $31 for fuel and service. After waiting on hold for upwards of 30 minutes each time, I was able to get the charges removed. The first time was because I had a picture of the fuel gauge and odometer. The second time they took my word for it. However, the second time, I raised this as an issue with the customer service rep. She went on to basically explain that if you do an express drop-off and do not speak with someone at the time you drop the car off, you are likely to get overcharged by some amount. I told her that this was a borderline criminal thing to do and she basically said "well, that's what we see happen a lot." So she basically admitted that the locations are either wildly incompetent or trying to illegally get an extra $20-$50 per rental that uses express drop-off. I found this completely outrageous. Her recommendation was to fill in the form on the back of the folder you get when you rent the car so it "makes it easier" for the people there to not rip you off. I'm doubtful that it would make a difference if they are just trying to take advantage of people who might not be as thoughtful about recording the information about the car when they return. So, consider yourself warned. If you rent from them, make sure that you document in some manner how you filled the gas tank so you don't get ripped off by this shady location. read more

I reserved a car online and then went to this location to pick up my vehicle after taking a bus ride that took a half hour from Lechmere station. When I got there, they told me I couldn't pay for my rental using a debit card because I have bad credit, and I didn't have any credit cards to pay with. I then had to take another half hour ride back and go online to see if I could take a bus to my destination. Then I had to pay $10 for a taxi ride to South Station because the last bus to Manchester NH was going to leave in 30 minutes. In the end, I saved over $150 by taking the bus, which was only $14. The bus had free WiFi, ample leg room, a tray table, and electric outlets for my laptop. Sitting in rush hour traffic, the time flew right by as I browsed the web and watched movies. This is my preferred Hertz location. All of the staff and the manager Dennis, are friendly, courteous and efficient. In the fall months it tends to get very busy with college students and their family coming in but I have always been able to get a car. read more

On a Sunday the staff gave me the wrong set of keys and then they closed up their office at 1pm. So when I went to the car in the garage I could not open it. Left me stranded since the office closed, and I had to uber to the airport and rent from Avis instead. Always check to make sure that they give you the right keys. Careless staff read more

This place deserves negative stars. It is a complete shame to the concept of customer service, much less the entire Hertz franchise, or Harvard Square (I know, not a combination that's asking much). I've rented two cars from this place (both because of a business account with Hertz) - the first time it took them two hours to come up with a car, and the second time it took two hours of idiotic updates to the ("I'll be back soon") sign (it was polar vortex time and I wasn't about to wait in the cold), only to get yelled at by the representative for being late. I then found that all of my colleagues (in Cambridge) use the Copley Square Hertz because of similar experiences. You are forewarned. read more

How I wish I can give them a negative infinity! Just SUCKS! Don't rent a car here. Shame on your service. I made a reservation for standard car. And they asked me to wait till closed and give a Cruze! And ask me to find a place to exchange myself! And I'm charged as standard car! And they said the starting fuel is 1/8. But I drove 1.8 miles and the fuel is almost empty! Is this stupid Cruze a Ferrari instead?! Damn it! This place SUCKS! read more
