I have been a Hertz member since 2022 and have completed several rentals with Hertz. I frequently rent vehicles with Hertz for both business travel and personal travel. As a loyal customer and President's Circle member, I have always expected a higher level of service, transparency, and support. Given my history and frequency of rentals, this experience has been extremely disappointing and has caused me to reconsider continuing my relationship with Hertz. After picking up my vehicle, I needed to update the card on file. I contacted Hertz customer service and was informed that President's Circle support could not assist me directly and that I would need to either contact the airport rental location or return to the counter to make the change. I attempted to contact the airport rental location multiple times, but no one answered the phone for over two hours. Because I was unable to reach anyone by phone and had been instructed to return to the counter if needed, I had no option but to drive back to the airport location after completing my scheduled meeting. Once I returned to the rental counter, I was advised that they would need to close out the existing reservation with the original card and update the rental with the new card, which would result in a new rental agreement number. At no point was I informed that this process would result in an increased rental rate or an additional full daily rental charge. I had the same vehicle for less than 24 hours and was not requesting a different vehicle, extending my rental, or changing the terms of my reservation. I was simply following instructions provided by Hertz to update my payment information. I should not be financially penalized for following the process Hertz instructed me to complete. I understand that daily rental charges may apply once a vehicle is picked up; however, my concern is that the financial impact of this change was never disclosed to me before I was instructed to take action. Had I been informed that updating my payment method would close my existing reservation, create a new rental agreement, increase my rate, and add another daily charge, I would have made a different decision. The increase in my rental rate is unacceptable. I reserved my vehicle under an agreed-upon rate, and I do not believe I should lose that rate because of a process change required by Hertz in order to update my payment method. I did not request a new rental or a new rate; I followed the instructions provided by Hertz representatives. This experience has been far more difficult than it should have been for a simple payment method update. As someone who rents frequently for both work and leisure, this level of difficulty and lack of transparency is not what I expect from a company where I hold President's Circle status. I value the relationship I have had with Hertz since 2022 and hope this matter can be resolved appropriately. However, this experience has significantly impacted my confidence in continuing to use Hertz for my future rentals read more

Hertz, in general, is fine. The customer service at this specific location (Hertz), is total garbage. The guy at the counter inside the garage, was a total A-hole. Big Caucasian guy, about 250lbs, really short hair, tattoos all over both of his arms, totally visible flakes on his hair. No "hi," no "hello, I'll be with you in a minute," no "sorry for the wait," no nothing. If the guy was having a bad day, well, don't take it out on the customers. Great experience at Hertz at O'Hare. You have to make your to the MMF Facility using the Air Train that goes from terminal to terminal. From there, simply follow the signs to your rental car company. Hertz is on the first floor. As a Gold Member, I simply found my name on the board and proceeded to that area to select a vehicle. (Skipping the counter!) The President's Circle selection was a bit lacking...lots of Nissan Altimas and Rogues, Jeep SUVs, and Kia Sedans mostly. There was one or two Corollas and a Camry. There were also some Buick Encores. Exiting was very straight forward...just drive to the booth and present your license. Returning was just as simple...drive up to the instructed location, empty your vehicle and leave it. I received a receipt via email within minutes. The few employees we encountered were very efficient...no issues! There are a few convenient gas stations close by to refuel before returning your vehicles on Higgins and Mannheim roads. read more

I'm usually brand loyal to another car rental company, but for my trip to Chicago, Hertz's price couldn't be beat! My regular rental was going to be $245.00 or so, and Hertz came in at $118.00. Who are you going to choose? I registered beforehand on their app and entered my flight details (good thing I did, because my flight was 2 hours delayed, and I arrived past midnight). I got confirmation that I could bypass the counter and go straight to the cars. I paid for a regular economy car, but when I got there, no such car existed. They only had compact SUVs which was fine by me. I got a Kia Sportage and was on my way. Easy pickup, easy return, no issues at all, and I appreciate someone staying there past their "close time" so I could get my car. Would definitely use Hertz again if the price is as good as it was this trip! read more

If I could rate this a zero star that would be appropriate. I picked up a rental car last May. It was a brand new Jeep hard top convertible. To make a long story short. I drove off the lot and onto the freeway headed north to Rockford, Il. I was about 20 minutes into the drive and all of the sudden the convertible hard top flew off the car. This rental was obviously not inspected by Hertz prior to us picking it up to ensure the roof was secure. This is gross negligence on the part of the rental staff at O'Hare. Somebody could have been severely injured or killed. I spent the next day trying unsuccessfully to swap this car in Rockford. The manager at the Rockford location didn't want anything to do with helping me. He actually told me if the car was stolen on my watch it would be my responsibility - even though the car couldn't be locked due to having no roof attached. This waste of time was the better part of my morning. We drove around in the cold at night, we had to make special accommodations with the hotel to keep the car safe in the baggage drop zone. We drove back to OHare on the highway, once again freezing with no option to put on the roof. The entire weekend was miserable due to this unfortunate situation. The car was returned. I was told we were not responsible. Now 9 months later I am contacted by a collection company claiming I owe $3000 for damage to this vehicle. Hertz has never contacted me to tell me I was responsible, never responded to my request to refund my payment for the rental that ruined my vacation and now I have to waste my time fighting a collection agency. Stay away from Hertz! The cars are not safe, they simply don't seem to care and the customer service is beyond horrible. They offered me a free rental on my next trip. I wouldn't take a free car at this point. Trying to shakedown a customer who was traumatized by your actions is simply digusting. I've been a long time Hertz Gold member. Never had a serious issue and any issue was quickly resolved with a call to customer service. Apparently, misguided by private equity investment, the company no longer provides people to call and talk to resolve issues. I was over charged by more than $800 dollars for mileage I never drove. I tried the the Chat button on the app. I had great difficulty typing my problems and reading responses from the AI chat bot. Yes, they use AI chat bots for their customer service. The website chat button does nothing. Eventually I was told to E-MAIL my problems to customer service and expect a 7-10 days for a response! I was told to provide a copy of my bank account or CC account to show I was charged this amount! Excuse me? Hertz has the bill sent to me with all the information. I responded to THAT e-mail, which I believe was more AI responses, and am STILL waiting for a reply and resolution to this issue, over 2 weeks later! NEVER AGAIN will I use Hertz rental car. EVER! If you aren't a member of Hertz's Gold Rewards, you are doing it all wrong. I believe it's free to join and you get special perks a.m. and checking out the cars is so simple. At this Hertz location in O'Hare, picking up your rental with their special gold rewards is a breeze. You don't have to wait in a single line and you simply look for your name on the board telling you which spot your car is in. You get in the car the keys in the car and you're good to go. I rented a Tesla but I'm pretty sure it's the same process for all the cars. On this latest visit to Chicago, my name wasn't on the board, but the person working in the gold office was amazing. So friendly, great banter, quickly got everything taken care of, and I was in my car and off. Inaccurate fuel charges and misleading customer service. Had a Jeep Compass rental at Hertz O'Hare Airport on 5/25/2025. When I picked up my rental vehicle, the gas tank was only at 25%. The Hertz employee at the exit gate acknowledged this and assured me she would make a note in the system so that I would receive a proper adjustment upon return. I trusted that the matter was documented. Before returning the car to Chicago O'Hare Airport, I filled the tank to full, going out of my way to find a gas station in a completely unfamiliar city with challenging airport traffic at night. This not only delayed my schedule and caused significant inconvenience, but also added stress to my trip. Upon return, I informed the Hertz employee at the return area of the gas situation. She scanned the vehicle using her iPad, confirmed that the previous note was in the system, and told me that my receipt would reflect a refund. Despite these assurances, I received no refund. When I contacted Hertz Customer Service, I was told that according to their records, the car was returned at the same fuel level as it was rented, and therefore no adjustment was made. This is simply not true and ignores the documentation and employee confirmations I received. This issue is not about the money--it's about principle and basic customer care. I've rented vehicles numerous times from various companies and never once received a car with only a quarter tank. I didn't mind correcting the error myself, but the lack of follow-through and inaccurate record-keeping is extremely disappointing. I am sharing not only to seek a correction but also to warn future customers about the lack of accountability and the potential hassle they may face with Hertz in even the most straightforward situations. Trying to Charge me $400 for Lost Keys! I am a President's circle member who returned a car at 4:30AM on 8-25-25 to the Hertz Rental at ORD. Despite over 50 cars being dropped off there were no attendants checking cars in, just a single Hertz employ having a picnic on a car hood. Hertz claimed and billed me for missing car keys that were left in the console by the shifter. I know they were there because I saw a key drop box upon leaving, I went back to get the Keys (which I saw for the second Time) , but said employee yelled to leave them in the car. Complained about the $400 charge to hertz customer service and they said they tried to contact me multiple times, but there is no phone text or email record of them doing so. Furthermore, there were multiple errors on the bill for instance claiming 950 of Mileage when I drove less than 100 and only paid for 4 gallons to fill the tank. The fact of the matter is When I dropped the car off the keys were in the car. By law, Hertz took possession of the car when I left, what happened to it after that point is not my problem and I will not pay their fee. Ever since Hertz went bankrupt i have avoided the company until AMEX offered the president's circle upgrade to card members. I made a reservation and rented a car from Hertz Rental Car company on 7/1/2025 at the Chicago O'Hare Airport. I signed all the paperwork and rented this car from 7/1/2025-7/4/2025. The person that assisted me asked me if I wanted to prepay the gas for this car. I told her absolutely not; I will take care of this on my own. She replied are you sure, the prices are running about $3.59 cents per gallon? I once again replied no, I will take care of it on my own. I received my final bill, (see attached) only to find out that I was charged $53.05 for the prepayment of gas. I filled up the gas before I turned in the car! I contacted Hertz customer service and spoke to a representative from Central America who was of no help. I then chatted with Hertz customer support and they couldn't help me. This email is about the fact that I have been cheated out of $53.05. It is about the principal not the money. I always considered Hertz to be a reputable company, however after this incident and the lack of assistance I have lost my trust in your company. read more

Customer service was terrible and unwilling to help us, so we ended up having to make a second reservation, then having to cancel it and losing over $50 just because we needed one extra day. In person or on the phone, no one could help us add a day so we had to make a separate reservation for it. Then we were told there was no way to combine the two reservations (after it was too late to cancel without a fee) which they then wouldn't waive. Ridiculous. We also received no guidance about how to deal with toll roads, so I assume we'll get a bill someday for those because we couldn't find any way to pay them ourselves. The driver's seat contains crumbs, and the front passenger seat has suspicious water stains. When I exited the facility, I had to stop at the booth because the personnel scanned the vehicle and I had to provide my physical driver license. Once the details matched, I was free to go. It is simple to return. There is no contact at all; simply park the vehicle in the return lot and leave the key; it is as simple as that. read more

Hertz made my first airport rental experience a breeze and I will definitely be a return customer. With O'Hare airport being so large, I called ahead to ensure I knew how to get to the rental car area by the time of pickup. The rental car location was a quick 3-4 minute shuttle/train ride from O'hare airport and thankfully, by the time we arrived, there were only a few people ahead of us in line so the wait wasn't long at all. Since I made a reservation ahead of time, all I had to do was give my name and the lady pulled up my information right away. I did have to secure the deposit on my credit card and also paid for the toll pass since I knew I was going to go through tolls but once all that was squared away, my daughter and I were able to practically pick whichever car we wanted. She was excited about that lol. We were directed to go into the car garage and literally choose whichever vehicle we liked within the designated area and the keys would already be in the car waiting for us. Since I wanted a sedan, there were quite a few cars to choose from but we chose a 2023 Nissan Altima. The keys were in the car so all we did was throw our luggage in the trunk and ride off. Upon return, it was just as simple. We returned the car with a full tank of gas back to the garage and someone was right there to guide us where to park. We left the keys in the car, I signed off on the return, received my receipt via email and that was it. This was, by far, one of the simplest rental processes I'd ever experienced. Rented a car at O'Hare. Was never told about the PlatePass option. Paid my own toll on the road through Illinois Tollway app. Received an invoice from PlatePass, (representing Hertz) for $75. Called Hertz. They told me the would look into it and get back to me within 72 hours. They never got back to me. I ended up paying the PlatePass invoice even though I was not made aware of the service at check-in. Neither me nor my family will ever rent a car from Hertz in the future. read more

About a 10-15 minute walk/ride via train to the office/pickup location. A bit of a frustrating experience trying to get to the right level via the elevator (which had a queue) from baggage claim (which is more of an airport issue). MMF is the rental car stop. Ok selection of cars for Gold Members on Wednesday morning around 8:30. I got a low mileage (3k) Malibu. Somehow the state from my license in my profile was missing. Unfortunately this couldn't be corrected at the exit gate so I had to go back to VIP area. They adjusted so I could leave but I had to go in and update my profile as they couldn't do that. Received the car with fuel gage indicating "full". Returned the car with fuel dage indicating "full". Got charged over $11 with their claim being the car needed 1 gallon of gas to reach full. I have no idea if the car I received originally had the tank completely full or was 1 gallon short, so why the hell do they claim to be so accurate in charging me to refill. I've been a loyal Hertz Gold member and customer since 2017, and rent cars from them every time I need to be in Chicago for work, about 8-12 times a year. I like the gold member board and being able to just pick the vehicle I want (bypassing lines) and just go. This time, I picked a car that had a strong cologne type smell in it and by the time I was in and settled and noticed it, I didn't want to unpack, etc. the windows were down when I loaded the car. Returned the car at their e-return at O'Hare and not a soul seemed to be working there so I left it and went to my flight. They charged me a $400 cleaning fee for smoking and I'm not a smoker!!! In fact, since I'm a singer, I'm really careful about even being around second hand smoke. I called customer service immediately and they said the staff member did not make notes of finding any "evidence," so they okayed a refund within 5-7 days. But, I still need to go through the hassle of explaining it to my company since it was rented on a company card, and that is crap. I'm writing this review to warn people that it looks like stuff has gone downhill with this location. This is not a loyalty forward or customer forward company anymore. If you smell ANYTHING in the car when you're choosing it, pick another car. This company is looking for how they can take advantage of customers by unfairly assessing them damage. read more

A month after returning our car we received word that we owed almost $3000 in "damage" for a "dent" in the hood. They sent multiple pictures in which there was literally no dent present as "evidence". They charged about 2000 for fixing the non-existent dent, 600 for "days lost" for use of the car (I'm sorry did the dent that doesn't exist somehow make it not drivable???), and a $400 administrative fee!! Waited in line at front counter for 10 minutes; finally get email saying "skip the desk go directly to your car". Get out of line and pick my car; answer all their questions about fueling and tolls, press the final button and it won't go through. Go to Gold counter (I'm a gold member) and she asks my name and says I'm not a gold member go back out to desk I just left. She was nice but had a very hard time completing the reservation. My rating is actually a 1/2 star. I am so dissatisfied with my rental. I picked this vehicle up from JFK Hertz. The vehicle was filthy inside and out. There were no floor mats and dirt smudges all over the screen. Dirt on the seats. It was obviously not cleaned. There was a dent in the body, scratches on the trunk which wouldn't close correctly. It did not drive smoothly and made a loud humming sound when on the highway which seemed like the wheels weren't balanced. Its also did not keep a charge very long and did not meet the advertised distance on a full charge. Seriously terrible rental. I spent an hour cleaning the vehicle after getting to my destination since I was so embarrassed to have family ride in the car. Ugh. read more

I rented a car at Akron-Canton Airport in Ohio on December 22 at 3 PM. I arrived at 2:30 PM, and the lady at the desk started to process my reservation but suddenly stopped and told me she couldn't continue because my appointment was at 3 PM and she couldn't do anything until then. I had to wait 20 minutes, even though there was no one else there; I was the only customer. When I returned, she was talking to a man (not a client), and apparently, I interrupted her conversation. She then began to behave very rudely toward me. Her response to all my questions was, "I don't know, ma'am; you have to investigate." She did not give me a tour of the car. She was going to give me an electric car, which I didn't ask for because I didn't know how to use it. She also failed to explain that the car had a damaged driver's light. I had to stop to charge the car multiple times, sometimes in lonely places where there were multiple risks. My trip, which was supposed to take six hours, ended up taking twelve hours, all because the lady held a grudge since she felt I had interrupted her. This caused her to refrain from helping me. Her behavior was unprofessional and rude, and I had a horrible experience as a result. Because of this, I will never rent a car from Hertz again. I hope this message reaches someone who cares about this business and pays attention to this criticism, as she made my day terrible and my experience the worst I've had while renting a car. read more

I'm a gold member and yet this will likely be the last time I rent with Hertz. At initial check in they were friendly, but when I got in the car, I noticed it smelled severely of air freshener. I assumed this was just related to the cleaning and was exhausted after a long day, so took the car into the city where I was staying. Didn't end up driving at the next day, but the day after I got in and noticed a severe cigarette sent and a cigarette burn on the driver side seat. In addition, the cigarette or small storage area in the console was sticky and dirty, and the cover for the back storage area was obviously from a different vehicle, did not fit, and took up a large portion of the rearview mirror space. None of this had been noted prior to renting the Car. I stopped at three Hertz locations and was told they did not have any cars that I could trade out for. RJ with reservations told me these locations would have cars, but said he couldn't reserve any for me and couldn't make any promises. Elijah at the State Street Chicago location walked away from me, after telling me there were no cars and did not offer any type of support or even a phone number to call for assistance. Larry at Midway location (again, where I was told cars were available on the phone) told me there was nothing for me and would hardly even make eye contact. He also mentioned that it was Saturday so I shouldn't really expect anything and that there wasn't really any customer service or manager available. When I asked about options, he just handed me the customer service booklet and again ignored any further questions that I had. Overall, I spent half a day trying to figure this out and still got nowhere. I spent over an hour on hold with no one even picking up the phone just calling and dialing multiple locations without getting any assistance.
