I rented a vehicle from Hertz on June 17th at 1:00 p.m. The car was in poor condition from the start--dirty seats, interior stains, and broken buttons on the steering wheel. I took the car home to deep clean and detail it myself just to make it usable. By 10:00 a.m. the next day (June 18th), I returned the vehicle because of a loud knocking sound coming from the engine. Hertz instructed me to take it to Pep Boys, who said they could fix the issue the same day if Hertz approved the work order. As of now, Hertz still hasn't approved it, and I've been left without a vehicle. To make matters worse, Hertz refused to give me a replacement, stating I'm "assigned" to the broken vehicle--even though it was clearly unsafe and improperly inspected before I received it. I'm now being held financially responsible for a car I cannot even drive. What's worse is that I was given a receipt showing photos of the car with a forged signature, falsely claiming I had approved its condition. I never signed that document, and no one took pictures in my presence. Forging someone's signature is illegal. I'm consulting legal counsel about this. More red flags from this location: 1. A steering wheel button was completely broken off--reported verbally by me on return. 2. The car was issued filthy and in unacceptable condition. 3. I called the Hertz location twice on June 18 around 5 p.m. No one answered. I had to pay for a Lyft ride to go in person, only to be told I couldn't cancel the reservation. 4. When I walked in, the front desk clerk was talking to his friend (not a client) in the lobby. After a short exchange with me, they left through the back door and left me alone in the building during an active severe thunderstorm warning. 5. Pep Boys confirmed that the car needed brakes, rotors, and stabilizer fluid--all major safety issues that should have been caught in inspection. 6. I received the car from Pep Boys on Friday, June 20 around 4pm. It was towed Saturday, June 21st due to the car jerking, shutting off, & the engine turning on. If this is the standard Hertz allows, shame on them. Do better. read more

This is the worse Hertz location I have ever been to! While my car was in the shop. I requested Hertz through my insurance. When I received the car it was filthy. the seats were stained with dark blotches everywhere and the driver side floor had a whole in the carpet the size of a basket ball. On further inspection when turning on the heat, it smelled horrible. All you could smell is cigarette smoke and wet dog. After a few days it got so strong that I could not take it anymore. I tried calling 5 times to see if I could exchange but they would never answer the phone. It would just ring constantly. This is when I brought it back to the N. Shadeland location. I was then told that they had no cars available and that I would have to go to the airport which is location across town. I finally got fed up and sent a complaint to Hertz corporate office. That when they told me there was nothing they can do and apologized for my experience. I have rented from Hertz many times over the years and I have never been treated like this. I had an okay experience at this location. I reserved a car but it was not there upon arrival. I was grateful that Chris caught me as I was leaving and offered me a Tesla to drive instead. His partner took me out for a run through of how to operate the electric car. It had a 70% battery and does not have the long range option. Luckily my mom has a Tesla charger I could use at home but it takes 9+ hours to get a full charge. I had to drive to Muncie and barely made it to a supercharger. The portable charger is pointless and is not reliable. I'd think twice before renting a Tesla for extensive trips. It's a lot trying to find a place to get juice. Overall - the service wasn't bad I just think this team has to be reactive versus proactive because the cars are limited and this location is smaller in size. read more

Used this location to get a rental car to go to a wedding that we were almost late to because of a delay in getting the rental. Got to the location and was told the car I had reserved for months ahead of time was given away, I was not notified at all about this ahead of time or asked to confirm my reservation to ensure they didn't give the car away. The only reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because the worker was able to get a car delivered from a different location for me, but I still didn't get a car for almost 2 hours after showing up. read more

Cars are dirty, staff is not helpful and constantly says "I am the only one working" as the reason for their poor service. No signs that tell you where to park the car (it's a free for all; just cars parked any which way in the lot) BUT they do have a sign to tell you there is "NO CAR WASH HERE" to ensure you're aware you're going to get a filthy car. First car (6+ passenger SUV) I was given had dents and scratches that were noticeable from 20 feet away (they were big). When I advised that the car was incredibly dirty and looked like it had been hit with baseball bats, the guy behind the counter said "Well that's all I've got." When they gave me a second car to use, it didn't have a 3rd row (which is what I paid for) and the "Check Engine" light was on + the tire pressure gauge was alerting for low tire pressure. Hertz should be embarrassed for this branch--it is NOT a good reflection of the Hertz brand and is a direct reflection of the management in place at the location. read more

They don't answer the phones at all. When I was in hertz picking up my rental they let the phones ring over and over it was empty only me inside. When they were finally ready because clearly they were so busy, and I was up at the counter that's when they decided to pick the phone up. Now I have an issue and I'm the person on the phone that won't get an answer. I have 1 little question, and to me it seems like they're just sitting on their ass being lazy watching the phones ring. They're literally right in front of the damn phones. The guy even made reference when I was there " these phones ring all day " yea answer them a**hole!! Very unprofessional to me. Because I decided to rent a car from the Hertz location, I missed my daughters recital dance! I arrived at the location hours early to make sure that there would be no problems with my reservation time and all fees and charges would be completed before I had to leave for my trip. This location stated that they only had electric vehicles for rent which I declined. I made another reservation with Hertz customer service and was assured that I would get a gas vehicle that was not the case. Upon my second visit to the counter a Rep by the name of Chris told me that they had gas cars but they were for someone else. I wanted to know who else. I think this is where the discrimination step in because it seemed liked the electric cars were only giving to a certain type of customers that looked like me and the gas cars went to the other people (Hertz did not want to Inconvenience those people, because their time is much more important than mine!). I lost my hotel money nonrefundable. the rep did not educate me on the electric vehicle, charging station, or charging ports and the battery was only at 69%.after driving 2 blocks it was onn67% no education on the use of driving an electric vehicles. And to top it off, my vehicle was presented to me blocks t was on uncleaned! Hertz please do better! And for the record the customer service reps that I spoke to were helpful with the exception of the rep at the Shadeland location. I had a really good experience at this Hertz location. There was a minor snag regarding my reservation, so Chris and the team hustled and found a solution. This place in an absolute joke - got stuck with a rental there once because insurance made me use them. Horrible service, cars are dirty, and ridiculously long waits in the nasty store. Second strike - rented a car Friday morning starting Saturday..... they took my money Friday, never heard from them anything was wrong, and then received a call Saturday when I was getting ready to pick it up that they had zero cars available. Spend close to an hour on the phone from the 800 number they make you call to get your money back, to find out it would be 7-10 days before I get my money refunded. The only reason they get 1 star is because you can't give 0. When a rental is scheduled to be picked up and everyone (insurance, store website, etc) says they're open until 6, you should be able to walk in at 5:36 without a problem. Instead, we had to knock on the door, were met with yells through the door that "we close at 5:30," and watched them lock up while they continued to be extremely rude and try to argue with customers. They lie and they're unprofessional. #1 - I received the car on a half a tank of gas and returned it on half a tank of gas and was charged $90 to fill it up. They insist that it was full - I drove it! I know it was never full! It's BULL! #2 - They snuck in a page for me to initial about extra coverage that I didn't need without explaining it to me! They charged me over $200 for this coverage when I already had a sufficient insurance policy to cover the same things! When I called regarding this and inquiring on a reversal of the charge - I was told that they thoroughly explain this to all their customers and that they have a copy of the initial and there's nothing they can do about it. They tried telling me my insurance policy wouldn't cover those things - jokes on them because I'm an insurance agent and I know for a fact that my coverage would have!!!!!! When I realized I was getting no where with the representative, I asked for a number for corporate - he said he didn't have one and I can look it up. Absolute worst customer service I've ever experienced. Had he tried a little more to help me instead of saying "I don't know what you want me to tell you" or "you can look it up" - I may not be so upset. It's one thing to not BE ABLE to help someone, it's a total opposite thing to not be WILLING. He was NOT willing. I will never use ANY Hertz location again and I will never recommend them to any one. WAY cheaper than the airport location...even the gas there is cheaper! The staff is friendly enough, but when I went to pick up my car on a Saturday morning, there was only one...YES ONE! car in the lot. "It's a what?" I say "Oh...I can't drive a Buick." They were very accommodating and gave me vouchers so I could get a more fuel efficient car from the airport location at the same price. I ended up in a Toyota Camry Hybrid for the week and loved the 40+ mpg! Word to the wise: if you make an online reservation and it says "Nissan Sentra or similar"--call beforehand if you are hoping for your car to be on the more fuel-efficient end of the spectrum. I PAID for a rental car, went to this location and was NOT allowed to get the car. This was on November 7, 2018. I had the email receipt, but was unsure of the actual card I used but told the RUDE man behind the desk I knew it was between 2 cards. He was having an intense conversation with someone else when I walked in - a man who apparently couldn't understand what he was attempting to explain. The Hertz worker was not even in the LEAST bit concerned with my car rental or the fact that I had PREVIOUSLY reserved a car. I left there without the car rental!!!! The wait was a little long but I honestly didn't have any problems at all. Employees, especially crystal, were very friendly and it was very easy for me to pick up my rental. It was ready for me right when I went to pick it up. Do not rent a car from this location. I had a reservation for 5:30 p.m., and I had already checked in earlier in the day. I hit some traffic on my way to the store, so I called to let them know I was on my way. The representative who answered the phone informed me that they would close at "5:30 p.m. on the dot." Luckily (I thought) I arrived just before 5:30 p.m. However, the door was locked and lights were off, so clearly the employees had been long gone at that point. The only remedy Hertz could offer was changing my rental to another location all the way across town. Unbelievably terrible customer service. I have never experienced such piss poor customer service as I experienced from your local location in Indianapolis (1321 N. Shadeland). I called on 12/22 to let them know that I would be dropping my car off for repair at 5:00 at Blossom Chevrolet down the street and State Farm said I could pick up my rental. NOT ONCE did the guy on the phone say that the hours listed all over the internet were wrong! It says 6:00 online, but I got there at 5:40 and they were yelling out the door that they were closed. I got on the phone with State Farm to explain and the guy inside comes out to argue with me. Seriously! Hours are inconsistent. Workers were worse than rude. Had to call State Farm and let them know that I refuse to continue ANYTHING with those idiots. You need to be careful of the face you put in front of your business. Because of my PERSONAL experience, I had my company pull our corporate agreement with Hertz and go with Enterprise. Another hertz driver damaged my personal vehicle parked in their lot for a short term rental. The hertz employee told me to park there, another driver damaged my vehicle, the manager showed me the evidence that it was their vehicle (matching damage, paint colors, ride height and where it was parked), but a week later this manager suddenly no longer worked for the company. Penske/Hertz's insurance took my claim info but now won't return phone calls. Have been hung up on multiple times. Do not do business with Hertz or Penske ever. read more

I rented from Hertz because my insurance company required it when my car was in the shop after a collision. The cars were clean and nice, but dealing with their staff - and the entire company which I ultimately had to do - was like dealing with children. This was at Christmas and I had family arriving during the rental time, so I traded from a small car to a larger one, and then back to a smaller one. The lady at the Shadeland location accidentally closed my claim which meant I had to call State Farm to have it reopened, which took 45 minutes. She asked me if I had filled up the car I was exchanging, and I confirmed that I had. She went out to check it and never mentioned the gas again. I saw the next day that I had been charged almost $200 for a full tank of gas, so I immediately called. She insisted that the tank was empty and said she had a picture to prove it. She also reminded me that it had been MY decision to exchange the car! She refused to even discuss it and told me to call back after Christmas to talk to her boss, which I did. That person told me that the car was, in fact, still in their lot and she would walk out and check. The tank was completely full. She apologized and said they would refund the money. But here's the worst part: it took 2 MONTHS, at least 15 calls - to this same individual as well as the main office - several emails, lots of empty promises and excuses, and a whole lot of aggravation. It is surprising this company can stay in business. My advice - if you HAVE to rent from them like I did - document everything and do not leave their location without an accurate receipt in your hand! This was exhausting. read more

Bad experience all around. The employee acted like he knew nothing, he was completely unhelpful and knowledgeable about the vehicles. We had a reservation for 8am for a minivan. Yes, the price was a few hundred cheaper than other places for a holiday weekend, but you get what you pay for. While the van wasn't ready for us yet I went to check it out while he was cleaning it to find out that the front tires were completely bald. I mean, not even street legal. The back tires were definitely worn, but not as bad as the back ones. But not safe. When I mentioned it to the employee, I said "didn't you notice these tires?" he said, "Well I do now." I asked if they were going to be replaced and he said, "not today." He was going to rent us this completely unsafe minivan to drive from Indiana to North Carolina! When I said I didn't want to use that one, he offered to give us a Traverse for the same price. Good deal, except that he didn't know a single thing about that vehicle either, couldn't tell me when the last time it was serviced. Seems they don't take care of the vehicles they rent out at all! When i canceled the order (after he already ran our card) He didn't give us any proof that it was canceled! Nothing, he just said we were good to go!
