I recently had a mixed experience with Hertz. The night before my rental, I called to confirm my reserved vehicle would be available since I've previously arrived only to find the wrong vehicle class. Unfortunately, I was placed on hold for over 25 minutes and no one ever came back on the line. When I picked up my rental the next day, the process itself was smooth and efficient. However, I received the pre-rental inspection report before I had even seen the vehicle. I'm used to doing a walk-around with an employee to verify any existing damage before driving off, so it felt odd to be expected to acknowledge everything was fine without first inspecting the car myself. To make matters worse, I was never able to open the inspection email. I mentioned it to the representative at pickup, and he said it might take a few minutes to load. I tried again a few hours later and still couldn't access it. Even when I returned the vehicle the following day, the email still wouldn't open. I let the representative know at drop-off that I had never been able to view the inspection report. Because I couldn't access the inspection report, I took my own photos and videos of the vehicle before driving off so I would have date- and time-stamped documentation of its condition, just in case. I also noticed the same bottle of Coke sitting on the counter from the day before, which gave the office an untidy appearance. It's a small detail, but it didn't leave the best impression. Overall, the pickup and return process were smooth, but the inspection process needs improvement. Customers should be able to inspect the vehicle before receiving the report, and the inspection email should be accessible in case there are any questions or concerns. read more

Yeah, bad experience. I have since learned that car rental companies have become very aggressive about finding and charging for damages. I made two mistakes - one is not sufficiently inspecting the car upon taking possesion. The other was not purchasing insurance through Hertz. My insurance agent used to tell me I didn't need it because my auto insurance company covered it. That is no longer adequate. I was not aware of having caused any damage, but they found damage under the front of the car and I do have a bad habit of pulling up too close to the curb. So that could have been my fault. They also found damage to the tire on the opposite corner of the car. Highly unlikely that I caused two problems in the space of a week that I was unaware of. I am certain I didn't cause the second damage. After my auto insurance paid, I still had a $1,511 bill for loss of use, diminution of value, an administrative fee, and, of course, my deductible. Part of that is the cost of the 2nd damage, which the insuranc company refused to pay for (I can understand as is clearly not a valid charge), but I'm told it will go to collections if I don't pay it. So when you call Hertz customer service they don't help you. At ALL. I extended a rental and they charged me $110/day and then wanted $400 to drop off the vehicle at a different location. That was a terrible phone call because I had been in an accident and I was at their mercy. BUT if you go into this location and talk to them they will really treat you right! I was so happy to be able to have it all cleared up and I left that location with a smile on my face and I am so grateful I will be re-renting because I'm not going to even be able to take care of of my totaled out car to sign off on it until the 10th. I have no idea why this location does not enjoy better reviews, I have been rent renting from this Hertz location and from this staff for well over two years and they have been nothing but consummate professionals, and always providing a great value and service! It is a busy location right off of the freeway and this team always manages to have a pleasant disposition while providing you your rental vehicle. I usually have great experience with Hertz but this location is the worst. it gave an option for a 5pm pick up and I was not paying attention that their closing time was 5pm..you would think that either they would have an earlier pick up time or inform me that they close at 5pm. After a 45 minute drive to this location, I arrived at 5:15pm. I entered the lobby and I begged very pleasantly to allow me to pick up the car. The moment you walk in it's dingy and dirty. They seriously need a cleaning crew asap- cobwebs on the ripped chairs and mystery substances all over the desk. I called a day in advance to reserve a full size suv or truck and the girl (no name given) just gave me a quick "sure" when I asked for reservation info or confirmation she said she noted it on my booking and would not help further ... but when I got there they tried to give me a Prius- I was very confused and said as much. Steve was super polite and I can appreciate his effort (only reason for 2 star and not 1) but he was working solo with a full lobby and was doing his best to take care of everyone. Understaffed for sure! I was not happy w the price I ended up getting for a small crossover, it would have been $1k for two weeks- no customer service or offer for weekly discounted rates while I wait for my car to be done in the shop. My husband booked a cargo van for us to move a queen size mattress and some boxes. They have unlimited mileage usage which is unheard of. He tried calling to verify the size of the vehicle but no one picked up the phone. Two weeks prior to our scheduled date, I ran down there to get the dimensions of the vehicle. There was one person working at the counter helping someone and a few others waiting off to the side. It was probably less than 10 mins when another person from the back appeared. He looked up our reservation and gave me rough dimensions. He said they won't know until the vehicle gets delivered. They don't keep vehicles at the location. They get delivered as needed. I guess it makes sense since it's located in a strip shopping center (next to Fraiser Market). It's an odd location for a car rental. We did a day rental on a Wednesday. We arrived after 10am. There was no one around besides the guy (the same one who assisted me the other week) behind the counter who was on the phone helping someone else. When he was done, he went through the verification process with my husband who reserved the vehicle. My husband already did the express check-in process online to speed up the process. Other car rental places just gives you the keys and your on your way when you do this. We went outside to where the vehicle was and he inspected it. It looked fine but then when he got inside and pulled out a wrapper, he told us that will have to double check everything and clean it out. He drove it to the back of the building. We saw another person come out from the back and into the cargo van to clean it. When they were done he brought it back around and inspected it again. I noticed on the front passenger side wheel that there was something leaking. From where I was standing, I saw a tube disconnected from a nozzle with liquid coming out of it. I pointed it out and he said it from the cleaning. I insisted that it wasn't and that he take a closer look. He then realized the nozzle disconnection. He connected it back and say, "I was wondering why the windshield wipers wasn't working." (I think it's illegal to not have working wipers.) It was working fine after he connected it. The cargo van seemed clean but there a large sticker blocking the side mirror on the driver side in order to use the mirror. The sticker looked like it was there to give information about the vehicle but I think it could have been placed elsewhere to not block the view of the mirror. We rented the vehicle for only one day to bring items down to South Bay. We barely made it back in time (4:30pm) before it closed at 5pm even with the traffic from the Fair in Del Mar. Luckily it worked out but we were cutting it close with the delay in the pick up time. The guy who helped us was nice, but points lost for delayed pickup time when they wanted to clean the vehicle when we arrived to pick it up, as well as the express checkout didn't work and the safety of the vehicle. read more

I booked a car online, and when I arrived 10 minutes before my scheduled pick up time the person behind the counter said "here for pickup?" And after confirming I was, notified me they have no cars and that there are 5 people ahead of me waiting for cars. How is this possible. THE LADY WAS VERY UNPREOFESSIONAL! Once I arrived she wasn't on the phone, but once when I arrived she was on the phone and ignored me for 5-7 minutes. When she finally got off of the phone she was nonchalant in helping me. Didn't offer me any assistance and was very cold person. First, horrible and rude customer service, unfriendly to all customers,vocally. I rented a car this morning on Expedia. I paid Uber 10$ to get to Hertz. Before getting to the front of the line Serena was already warning that no cars were available. i said, "i have a reservation".... she went on and on about how the "cars aren't available and Expedia lists cars from here to up the coast here to there blah blah blah blah blah.. no service just excuses... " When I got to the front of the line she said, "we have a car it's a Tesla." I mentioned that I wasn't sure I wanted that but decided to do so and she went back to check something. About 5 minutes later she came back and said, "it has 51% charge and clean." As she was setting up the rental she went in the back again and came out about ten minutes later and said, "oooh, bad news, the Tesla is at 20%, and is dirty"... do you still want it.?" It was clear she didn't want me to take it. She was untrustworthy as I feel like it was lies. Anyway, so I asked her to cancel it and of course there was NO customer service.. just an awful awful Hertz site with an employee that needs to learn to treat customers with an ounce of humanity and respect. i am disgusted with Hertz and also Expedia for this business practice. I lost money on Uber (23$ round trip) i am now supposed to call some number and wait forever to cancel a rental I didn't want to cancel. This agency in Oceanside performed well, until the last moment. The pick up wasn't that bad with 20 minutes wait because there was 2 people in front of me. The car was nice and the staff was friendly. However, everything fell apart when we returned the car. We had called to extend the rental and talked to Salina who OK'ed the extension. We got charged extra for late return. We filled up the gas tank in the gas station next to the agency. But we got charged $85 for gas. We spent hours on the phone and month waiting for the gas credit. But Hertz would not refund the late return even we had the confirmation from Salina. If you rent from them, make sure you review every line of charges before you leave the counter. read more

Our flight had been canceled, so we had to make last-minute plans to drive. While dropping off our dog that morning, I received a screw in my tire. So we chose to rent. When I stepped in, an older lady was telling another woman a story that was unrelated to work. She looked at me and said, "We'll be with you in a minute." She continued her narrative as I stood there waiting. After she finished, the second lady stated she could assist me now. I inquired whether I could rent a car with winter tires. The elder lady glanced at me and replied, "We don't have snow tires here; we're at the beach." I responded, well, keep the RSVP the same. We waited outside for 30 minutes until they brought out a car that I would not consider rentable. We were already running late and didn't want to spend time swapping it out. The car we rented was garbage and the worst we'd ever leased. The windows wouldn't seal, making the entire journey loud; the visor was damaged and hadn't been cleaned; the cup holders were sticky; the cruise control didn't work; and the wipers squeaked. Most critically, the rear window was obscured by a black tint that was bubbling up and making visibility impossible. Wife said the car smelled like a fart. When we arrived at our destination, I noted that Hertz had a desk at The Wynn. I felt it would be fantastic if they could assist me with my problems. The man didn't appear to want to work; he said it would cost $400 if I returned it to him, and he couldn't switch it out. I couldn't phone Hertz either; I'd have to go to the airport. Hertz should save money by getting rid of the desk at The Wynn, which is wasteful. Later that day, I did just that. I went to the airport and returned the car. I had to go to the front desk and wait for 30 minutes to see someone. After I explained our situation, they charged me an extra 120, claiming they deducted 20 for our troubles. I investigated one-way rentals and they were approximately 180, but I was charged a total of 240. I have a forthcoming rental with Hertz and am really considering canceling it and going with someone else. I spent a lot of time dealing with rudeness, unhelpfulness, or the worst car I've ever rented, just to get financially gouged. Why would I return to Hertz? I work with Hertz in Oceanside on a daily basis- The service is always inconsistent. The employees are often frazzled, maybe this is because they are short staffed? The organization is lacking and the customer service always falls short. I have called 5 times in a row this morning to no avail. I should not have to call as I booked a car through our Rental Portal but I need to confirm that they even saw the reservation and ensure that the car will be delivered to our FBO. More often than not, the reservation is missed and the employees often use the excuse of "they did not see the reservation". As I mentioned before, the Customer Service is subpar. There is a lot of room for improvement and with proper training and support, I believe this location has a lot of room for growth. read more

One of the worst experiences i've ever had. We reserved a rental for a pick up time of after 12pm today but they close at 12pm???? Someone was in the office but wouldn't help. Would not give us a car or even a refund for that matter. No communication and lack of care/customer service. We had someone in town and had a plan for a trip now we have to do last minute scrambling and are out of money that was already spent on this rental. I would NOT recommend using this place. These guys went above and beyond for me when I left my work badge in my rental car. I was panicking today, wondering how I had lost it, and apparently someone there brought it to my work site. Not saying this should be expected going forward, but I am really grateful to my guardian angel at Hertz. As far as the rental: everything went smoothly. I rented a single sedan while my car was in the shop. It took about 10 minutes while another customer was being helped, but, from what I've seen with rental companies, this is pretty standard. That's what the chairs are for. I loved my rental. I miss it. I was sad to get my car back. Go in with realistic expectations and you won't be disappointed. read more

Insurance booked this as replacement car while my car was at the shop. Was picked up at Tesla Collision Center, and brought to the Oceanside location to pick up car. Car was dusty when I picked up, and lady was trying to wipe down before giving to me. Later found discarded shopping bags in trunk; I don't think they did a thorough clean of the car prior to renting out again. Had to extend my rental and since it's a replacement car, couldn't do it online. Had to call the place and after an hour and a half of waiting, I gave up. Got tired of listening to the elevator music. Tried to drive to the shop to extend, but their hours make it hard to get there after work or even on weekends (only open sat am). So I just kept the car for an extra 3 days. Upon returning the car, I waited in line for about 40mins before an agent was able to inspect the car for 30 seconds and then told me that receipt will be emailed. Never received email. Tried to get receipt online but again, since car was a replacement, full receipt was not available and only the total shows. Told insurance the screenshot will need to suffice because I am not driving down there again to get receipt and there's no point in calling because they never pick up the phone. read more

One man in line behind us decided that he didn't want to wait so he walked to the front and asked a question and the employee started helping him instead of politely telling him that there was a line that needed to be followed. Bad experience here. Despite my reservation clearly denying the extra insurance (all already covered through my business policy), they slipped it in without asking. I now have to reimburse my corporate card the added money out of my own pocket. VERY shady practices here. So, 39 days ago I was hit by a driver working for Uber that was driving a Hertz rental car he had full coverage with Hertz it was reported to Hertz now after 30 phone calls Hertz still has not responded to my request since then I had my car fixed out of my own pocket 3100.00 in damages so now I'm suing the driver as he admitted fault. Big Warning Don't do business with this office at all because as you can see in my experience with photos from the beginning. The office in Victorville done an excellent job by fixing a charge of $35, but this Office did horrible customer service, horrible experience, only to charge me more money. There is no Office to drop off a vehicle on Palomar Road in Palomar Airport in Carlsbad as they have it a drop off location to their business so I ended up paying almost $30 just to get back home additionally, charged me almost $50 they say it's a different drop off location!
