Hertz added Damage Waiver insurance and Personal Liability Insurance to my rental without my consent. I did not ask for or authorize these optional coverages, yet I was charged for them. When I contacted customer care, the representative repeatedly claimed the charges were based on my "profile" because Hertz had those preferences turned on by default. That is not an acceptable explanation. A profile setting should never be used to automatically add paid insurance products without clearly obtaining the customer's affirmative approval at the time of booking or pickup. This feels like an unfair and misleading practice: defaulting customers into extra-cost coverage, then pointing to an old or hidden profile preference when they question the charges. Optional insurance should be clearly presented, voluntarily selected, and confirmed--not preselected in a way that shifts the burden to the customer to notice and remove it. I expect Hertz to remove these unauthorized charges, explain exactly how and when these options were supposedly authorized, and change its process so customers are not automatically billed for insurance they did not knowingly choose. Until then, I cannot recommend Hertz to anyone who expects transparent pricing and honest rental practices. read more

This is for Hertz corporate. Double billed and no way to get help. I will have to dispute the charges with my credit card company. I rented a car and prepaid $337.92 on Feb 22. I picked up the car May 16 and added an extra driver for $105. I got my credit card statement and Hertz charged me $198.26 on May 25th. They charged me all of the service fees a 2nd time. I have tried using chat to resolve the issue with no luck. The live agent leaves you "on hold" for 10-15 minutes while they look into the charge. Then they ask "Are you still there" wait about 10 seconds and close the chat because you did not reply soon enough. Or they connect and then disconnect the chat. Clearly they are just clearing their queue and not trying to help. I called the Customer Service number and battled the faulty AI logic until I was transferred to an agent. I have been on hold for 20 minutes at this point with no prompts or music to make me believe I am actually in a queue. I suspect I will be on hold until I give up. read more

I rented a vehicle from this location. When I returned the vehicle I was sent an invoice adding a $200 carwash with no explanation. I've been disputing the charge for over 45 days with no resolution. The customer service dept ignores requests. I disputed the payment with my credit and they fought it stating they were refunding and still almost 8 weeks later no credit received. The worst. Bottom line, I am a long standing Hertz gold member, and I had updated all my information online while making my reservation 6 months ago! In the 10 Hertz confirmation emails- never did they tell me information was missing from my profile. And then they didn't have updated information when I checked in. The gentleman checking me in decided he had to now add ALL my information and refused to honor my rate because he insisted this would have to be like starting a new reservation. It was so annoying -I felt like flying back home and leaving the area. I have lived a long life but have never been so annoyed at a service worker as I did here. Hertz is a good rental car agency overall but it's definitely not as good as it was before the change in ownership in 2020. Some times there's prior damage, higher miles and defects (inoperable radio, CarPlay, gps, etc). Add to that, you're required to pay a convenience fee of $9.99 per 24 hours for toll charges by plate when there's no option to pay $ to an attendant or online as a non-owner. Often times, there are only electric vehicles on the preferred aisle which isn't ideal when there's a fair amount of driving involved. More often than not it's a solid 3-4 stars. read more

This was my first time renting a car on my own and it wasn't great. I arrived in Tampa absolutely exhausted after several flight delays. The woman at the Hertz desk spoke so quietly, I had to ask her to repeat herself after every sentence. I understand that some people are quieter than others, but TPA is a loud, busy airport, and at the time of our interaction there was at least one child screaming. After registering, I needed to go get a car. I had no idea where the car bay was (the desk woman had gestured "that way"), and I wandered around asking random travelers and staff at other rental places if they knew where to Hertz bay was. Finally I found it! Next issue - I didn't know that you just pick a vehicle and drive away. So I spent a good amount of time looking for a Hertz staff member to ask what to do. Someone eventually did say "Just choose one and leave". The vehicle I chose (Toyota Corolla) was a great car with good gas mileage, lane assist, was super clean, and a pleasure to drive. Unfortunately, the fees were not well explained, and after I returned home I was charged much more than I had expected. I will think twice about using this company again. read more

Be careful, if you even fill up your gas tank and drive 20 miles or less to the airport, they will charge you for gas even if the gas gauge needle is on full! (They rounded up to 2 gallons at $8+ a gallon. Small SUV with good gas mileage.) Had one toll charge and they added a $19 convenience fee which other Tampa car rentals only charged me $5-$8 range for said fee. Note also checked in online and still had to wait 30 minutes to get finally get a car. (Note there was only 6 car rental groups ahead of me .) I should have read reviews and the two stars or less rating is well earned! read more

We did online check in. The site tells you that you will take a pics of all the damage on the next page. When you click the next page, there is no option. So we walked back to the desk to be told no they take pics of your car on the way out. Once we got inside we noticed there was a good amount of sand in the car but needed to get on the road. Once we pulled out of the parking structure we realized dead bugs everywhere, super dusty and the seats were stained. This is a 2025 and def was not cleaned. On every email I received asking about my experience I let them know and just finally received sorry for the inconvenience. I offered pictures of the car and just got the general email. We went here on the Tampa bay airport. They have shuttles from the airport that take you. It is a confusing layout as there are car rental companies dedicated to certain floors. If you are not a GOLD member, I can only imagine the lines being long, but since I am a member, I was able to get a car from their gold member. Selection is very good as they have SUV and regular sedans. My wife loves to choose different SUVs and there was a Mercedes one, however we thought practical as we know this was a gas saver. I am sure there will be more charges coming soon however. Dropping off the car, the entrance is very hidden which is the downside. read more

Miserable experience in every way. pickup location changed without notice. car I reserved was not available. car I was given was infested with fire ants (realized this after driving for awhile). no way to contact customer service (automated menu gave no option, best I could do is press option for roadside assistance but they were useless and couldn't put me in touch with anyone). car was received with 3/4 tank, rep said to return it with that amount but i later received an email receipt saying I received it with a full tank. at return (different drop off because it was a one way rental), person at counter would not respond to ant problem, told me to call place I rented from (it's all Hertz, but that didn't matter. The entire experience was one person after another passing blame, no one was helpful at any point) . return office saw my rental contract but said I would be charged $80 more than the contract said because "that's what the computer said." I asked how to avoid the random charge and was told to go back outside and find a hertz employee. I said I need to get to my plane and left. Disputed charge with my cc company. absolutely the worst experience at every point. Appalling customer service from Hertz as we were unable to collect our car that we prepaid for. Our flight was delayed by thirty minutes and by the time we arrived at the Hertz desk nobody was to be found. They had our flight number and could've easily looked up when we were arriving. After calling all customer service numbers we could find and not getting through to anyone we were forced to find our own way to our accommodation from the airport. We were staying in Bradenton after landing at the Tampa airport. Hertz were also kind enough to send a confirmation email stating we hope we enjoy our rental that we didn't have. The next day we called Hertz Bradenton who advised us that they don't have a phone at the airport location and if we wanted to change our pickup location to Bradenton we would have to cancel our prepaid booking and make a new one. Normally we wouldn't mind still using a company in the future after a bad experience but after the lack of communication on Hertz and poor customer service provided we likely will going elsewhere. read more

I rented a vehicle from Hertz for 9 days back at the beginning of July. I was told when I returned my vehicle that damage had been detected and that it would cost me $285.00 for a small dent located on the left front fender. There was no such damage, so I disputed it. I was informed by Hertz that after further review my card would not be charged. TWO MONTHS later (at the beginning of September) my card was charged $285.00 out of the blue. No email or phone call was made to me prior to this charge. I contacted multiple people at Hertz to get this reversed and was sent from person to person and finally received an email that they have determined that this small dent does exist and the charge with stand. I will NEVER use this company again and I have used them for years!! They just lost a long term customer, but from all the reviews I am now seeing, I am better off walking about from such a crappy company!!! read more

Recently had my worst experience ever with Hertz... It started at the very beginning when we were selecting our car. While waiting in line to select our car, instead of taking us out one by one the hertz employee brought all of us (4 families) out to select our cars. This felt like the opening scene in the hunger games where we are all battling to get the one we want. We were initially left with Toyota Corolla that had "smoke" written on the driver wind shield. It wreaked of weed and cigarettes. After explaining this to a rep they brought us a white Chevy Malibu. After a quick inspection of the car, it smelled and looked presentable minus a few paint scratches on the rear bumper. This was acceptable to me. After driving the car for a few days towards the middle of our trip, we encountered a lot of rain on this day. This is when we discovered a 1/2" gap in the driver door. So whenever it rained outside it also rained inside the car, specifically on the driver... this was unacceptable. I was hours away from the hertz location at this point. I sucked it up and sat in the rain. Upon trying to call the reservations number I was looped in an endless circle with the phone robots. After calling the roadside assistance number, neither of the options provided were relevant to my situation such as requesting a tow truck or an accident claim. After trying to call the Tampa location directly through a number found on a Google search, it rang for a few minutes and never reached anyone. So fine, I suck it up and proceed with the vehicle for the remaining 2 days of my trip. When I return the vehicle I go to the Hertz Gold Member customer service desk where I speak with the most incredibly rude employee ever. This guy proceeded to tell me that I didn't try hard enough and that I should've called the roadside assistance number... instead of helping me and providing me options, he belittled me and said "there's nothing you can do now". I was amazed and enraged at how these Hertz employees do business. As a Chief Executive that travels for work all the time, I will never use Hertz again. If Hertz wants to keep me as a customer, I feel that I should be compensated for this horrible experience. I don't expect to have the car for free but I do feel that I should not have been charged full price for this faulty vehicle on top of my awful experience. read more

I am a long time Hertz Gold member and found my experience in Tampa surprisingly subpar. I understand that I rented during a busy time, so of course the selection of cars was less than during a normal time. But with that said, the few cars to choose from were less than adequate. The first car I chose, 36000 miles, had low tire pressure which I discovered just before checking out. The next cars to choose from had over 50,000 miles on them. To make matters worse, there were a few decent looking cars which were in the lot, but when you get close to selecting the vehicle, you see "do not rent" written on the windows. I ended up with a small compact vehicle - decent, but not the size I was hoping for. Next time I go to Tampa, I will likely choose a competitor (and very likely save money at the same time). To my fellow Hertz Gold members expecting Hertz Gold service, my advice is to lower your expectations in Tampa. read more

I rented a vehicle through Hertz. The first car we were provided the hood was up on the car so they switched it out , the next car the was a 2024 and the engine light was on, now the third vehicle they gave us we were given complimentary gas for all the trouble so to bring it back on 0% or as close to. We were charged for gas when on your receipt it's says "return on 0%" I returned with a half a tank. I was also charged $400 for a "outside cleaning fee" with no explanation on what this is for. The vehicle was not dirt. My rental went from $260 to over $700. You can't get anyone on the phone as they do not have a customer service number to call. Watch Out! They are renting Repossessed cars! A friend rented one, found it missing at the hotel in the morning, only to find out from the Sheriff it had been repossessed and towed! DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION! When I booked my rental and paid in full online I declined the insurance. When I went to pick up my vehicle I again declined the insurance when I was asked if I wanted it. Somehow this insurance ended up in my agreement and I am being charged 174.95. I did not want this insurance when I booked nor did I want it when the car was picked up. This seems to be a common theme with this location. I contacted Hertz (which is a nightmare to get through to anyone because supposedly there are no supervisors you can talk too) and they agreed to refund me the money. After 10 days I contacted them again looking for my refund and they changed their mind and decided I will not get one. Completely ridiculous. I will never rent from this company again! read more

I usually receive very good service via Hertz. I was surprised during this trip, particularly upon returning the vehicle, how haphazard the process was. I'm pretty laid back and am willing to put up with a bit in the way of delays. But when I pulled in to drop the car off, the Hertz attendants were all over the place. There was no regimented process where they were going down the line checking folks in - in the order they arrived. Hertz is awful. Service is super slow, the pick up process is never smooth, the deposit is super high and the vehicles they rent you are ridiculous. First off whenever I've rented from Hertz I've always had to wait in a long line to pick up my rental. I don't know why it takes so long to look up rental information. Then there's the $200 deposit they charge when you rent their vehicles. Yes, it's refundable but you have to wait the nice 3-5 business days before they return it to you after you return the vehicle. Oh and the service staff is never very friendly either. Then there's the vehicle... I did order an economy car and it stated that I would get a Kia Rio or something similar. Yep, they put me in a Chevy Spark which is the size of a smart car. I parked next to someone with a Kia Rio for comparison and took pictures. The two vehicles are not at all similar. The Spark is so much smaller and crappier than a Kia Rio. My legs were so cramped in that vehicle. I can't imagine a grown man driving that vehicle or even being able to get in it. I'm 5' 6" and my knees and heels hurt from the cramped vehicle. I will avoid using Hertz in the future. I found that Enterprise has better deals and much much much better service. read more
