The espresso was very tasty, and their espresso machine setup is genuinely fun to see. I also tried the tamago sando, which is a Japanese-inspired egg salad sandwich on Hawaiian shokupan. It was flavorful and pretty good overall, but $13 for an egg sandwich is a little hard to justify. The coffee is also on the pricier side, so this feels more like a treat than an everyday stop. Despite its name implying that nefarious action is taking place within perhaps a dark cave full of rituals and candles (nothing wrong with any of that!), Hex is a bright and beautifully sleek cafe where you can get coffee, natural wines and breakfast/lunch items. Depending on the baristas, you may even get some punk rock but that's never guaranteed. I've heard everything in here from indie to pop, as well. And if you want to be sipping and snacking during weekend brunch hours, well, be prepared for a packed house. Personally, I love it here on a weekday morning. There's plenty of tables and outlets and it's a little quiet. The baristas couldn't be nicer. Although there's not much for vegans on the menu, do check out the delicious baked good options in the display case because if they have the vegan strawberry cake, it's a must! I haven't had wine here, but if I were to do so, I'd take it outside because that area is so quiet and lovely, with plenty of shade. Wow this Japanese cafe is so good! I ordered the mushroom tartine and it was so delicious with the egg, pickled onions, cheese, and bread. The braised dashi sauce was very flavorful, and the bread was soft and thick. The hex waffle was also really good with the honey miso butter. It was very fluffy and light. We went for one of their Wednesday chicken sandwich/wine specials and I can't wait to go back! Everyone working that night was helpful, attentive and welcoming. The cashier helped us pick out our wines and they were delicious. We enjoyed them on the patio while we waited for the chicken sandwiches. Had some time to kill and decided to check out Camp North End since I was in the area. I am still very new to the area and hadn't yet heard of HEX, but when I saw it I knew I had to stop in and check it out. The way the entire building (and most of Camp North End for that matter) is wrapped in vines and obscured by a multitude of different thriving plants really appealed to me. The inside of this place was just as cool, with a minimalistic and somewhat dark industrial aesthetic. Contrary to many specialty coffee shops, HEX had an abundance of indoor and outdoor seating, which I appreciated. All of the staff members were extremely friendly, and although it was pretty busy, my coffee came out relatively quickly. I was also pleasantly surprised to find a lot of their roasts were extremely fresh, and at the time I was here, all the beans on the shelf were roasted three days prior. I got their seasonal latte iced with whole milk and it was everything I would expect from a specialty roaster. I didn't try any of the pastries, but will definitely be returning in order to do so. Although this was my first time trying HEX, I immediately knew this would not be my last. If you're looking for amazing beans, delicious coffee/matcha, or a place to just get away for a bit, I would highly recommend stopping by and giving them a try. read more

Hex is known to be one of the best coffee roasters in the Charlotte area. So reviewing their food comes as a pleasant surprise. It's been awhile since I've been here (pre kitchen era) so I was happy to see they had a food menu when I arrived. It's Japanese inspired which also fits the Japanese inspired design. First, I ordered a filter coffee which was an Ethiopian. It was well balanced but still had tons of fruitiness and stone fruit coming through. For food I ordered the spicy chicken sando. It was HUGE. The chicken was protruding out of the bun. It was breaded perfectly. It was insanely crunchy, while also being the right amount of tender. The spices on the chicken are a simple katsu, but it ties all the other flavors together hiding under the brioche bun. The pickles, the sauce, the Mayo it was all :chefs kiss:. I also enjoyed the fries on the side which are seasoned uniquely. I would have loved an aioli or dipping sauce for them though. read more

A friend and I came here on a Sunday morning with her almost 2 year old. There was plenty of space inside with small tables and chairs on one side of the space. In the other side of the space, there was a room with steps and plugs and a few seats against the window for work spaces. This was the kid space for sure and a great place to wrangle the toddler in one room. The coffee menu was basic and offered the typical finds. My friend and I got vanilla lattes and enjoyed the smooth flavor of the coffee beans. We got a fruit cup for the toddler and she enjoyed the pineapple and strawberries! After we ordered they gave us a table number and brought the drinks and food to us about 5 minutes later. They he space wasn't too busy when we arrived at 9am, but got busier around 10am when we left. Most of the shops and restaurants open at 12pm on Sunday, so there wasn't too much to do when we arrived as early as we did. Parking is easy to come by on the roads around camp Northend (2 hour parking) or in the garage (first 3 hours free). Stopped in today with a group of friends during Camp North Ends Mistletoe Market and was very pleasantly surprised. This was my first trip here and I can't wait to come back. After an appointment Uptown, I wanted to grab a chai and work from one of the many coffee shops around the city. It had been a while since I visited Camp North End, so after looking at my options in the area, I decided on Hex. First off, I really enjoyed the layout. The shop was open, minimalist, and welcomed plenty of natural light. There was some music playing to enhance the ambiance, but it wasn't loud enough to interfere with conversations--just your typical coffee shop sound levels. The staff was friendly and walked me through the menu, highlighting the featured baked items for the day, which I definitely appreciated. As a self-proclaimed chai connoisseur, I had to try theirs to see how it ranked among the other spots I've visited. The chai was good--the flavor was there--but I prefer mine on the stronger side, so it may have just been a matter of personal preference. It didn't blow me away, but I'd order it again and experiment with tweaks to get that bolder flavor. I'd probably grab a muffin to snack on, too.
