When I was younger, my parents took me to Hey Mikey's for the first time while we were at The Strand, right when it first opened, and I got a behemoth of an ice cream cone. I got a t-shirt too that I wore for years until it was ultimately retired. I actually wrote a Yelp review about it that I deleted. In it, I said "The smell of the waffle cones filled the place with smiles and enjoyment. I knew I wanted a waffle cone." What a terrible critic. He will never be Yelp Elite. I haven't been back to Hey Mikey's since then, just because I haven't really been back to Galveston in some time, but my memories of the unique ice cream flavors and toppings remained. Heading back to Galveston for a cruise, I wanted to try and make a stop there again for nostalgia's sake. Instead of heading to the Airbnb, my girlfriend and I drove straight to Hey Mikey's as our first stop in Galveston. We got there around 8:45 pm, which was 15 minutes before they closed (our fault). This is no diss to Hey Mikey's, but almost everything else on The Strand on a Thursday night closes way too early, so it felt like everyone was at Hey Mikey's. The line was extensive in front of us and behind us even after it closed. After waiting through the line for quite some time, I got a waffle cone with their cereal milk ice cream, which had Fruity Pebbles in it, topped with Lucky Charms. They gave it to me with a temperature-changing plastic spoon that turned from yellow to purple when cold. The ice cream was sensational. What an incredible flavor. The only downside was the waffle cone being a little stale, but I fault that to it being a waffle cone ordered right at closing time. The next night, I returned with my cousins and ordered a cup of cereal milk ice cream with Cocoa Puffs as the topping instead. Fantastic stuff. Once again, being there too close to closing meant we had to wait, and we didn't get our ice cream until 9:30, a full 30 minutes after they closed. It was nice that they still served us though! One thing I did notice, which I don't know if it's a normal thing, is that since Hey Mikey's is the only ice cream shop open past 8 o'clock on most weeknights, they seem to get a lot of foot traffic after that time. Their menu is pretty large in its offerings. If it were just scoops of ice cream, the line would move fast, but so many people were ordering shakes, which are a lot more labor-intensive and removed a staff member from their assembly line to focus on the shake. I don't have any advice on how they could easily move the line in the later hours of the night, but man, those kids are working their butts off for everyone to get their late-night sweet treat. Worth the wait! A small business that makes home made ice cream with a variety of flavors and combinations to choose from. There a few tables inside the establishment and it was quite packed with a line, however service went pretty fast. From the traditional chocolate and vanilla to Americas colors, and Salted Carmel, lots to choose from shakes, bowls and a banana split. I had the double scoop Nutter Butter and Salted Carmel and the misses had a Brownie Sundae. If you're in Galveston, check it out. I like getting ice cream here when we are in Galveston. They come up with new flavors every time and their flavors are tasty. The cookie monster is usually what I get and I think it's a pretty delicious and solid flavor. I got the black walnut during our current visit here and it is a coffee-flavored ice creams which was pretty good. They have mini, small, and medium scoops available. The prices range between $3-$5 for the scoops. A banana split was $9. They only have street parking which may be challenging if the Strand is busy because this place is close to the Strand. Read the street parking signs because you may need to pay depending on which street you parked. The staff is also helpful and they don't mind you sampling their ice cream if you can't decide which flavor you want. They have ample seats inside and a couple outside the place. It tastes fresh and the flavor selection is delicious! My favorite was cake batter, but the nutter butter is also delicious. The kids loved the strawberry poptart, Oreo, and cereal milk. The turtle trax is also delicious. Old fashioned root beer is delicious, and if a shake is more your style they have great shakes too. 5 stars all around, great quality, good price, amazing flavors. I've come here quite a few times and each time my ice cream tastes good. Their Nutella flavor specifically is the one I always opt to try. The last time I went I wanted a brownie sundae, but unfortunately they were out of brownies. The service is good, but the ambiance is just okay. It's also worthy of mentioning that I attempted to come here 2x in the past 2 weeks, and both times this place has been closed despite saying it was open on Google. No mention of updated hours on Instagram either. If they're going to be closed during normal business hours, they should really post somewhere online that they're not going to be open. The honey flavored ice cream was delicious. Not too sweet and the texture was so velvety and smooth. My complaint stems from it being a Saturday night on Galveston island, the end of summer, the wait is out the door and there were only two employees. The female was busting her tail to get everyone in/out but I watched the male play with putting his gloves on for like 10'mins. My husband claims he won't return because he tried to order a specialty shake in a size "small" but was told he's only allowed to order a large. Personally, I don't mind haha. Also, the store layout isn't very productive. The toppings are at the front of your ordering process and then all of the flavors follow. So a lot of customers were walking from the register section back to the end of the line to pick toppings. Came here on a Friday afternoon with my family based on a recommendation. We were not impressed. There weren't many flavors of ice cream and the toppings selection was limited. A couple of the flavors (e.g. Pickle Ice, Barbie) were creative; we sampled them and didn't like these flavors. There weren't any other customers in the shop other than my family. There were two employees working. The male employee was extremely friendly and helpful. The female had no personality and didn't even greet us. She just stood there on the side behind the counter and stared out into space and occasionally made a waffle cone. At one point, before we left, I saw her pick her nose. I'm hoping she washed her hands! The bathroom was disgusting! It smelled like poop and bleach! I used the bathroom soon after arriving, and the stench was nauseating.
