Traveling to the Strand in Galveston? Have to go to LA King's! Their line for ice cream was long but superfast with 4 friendly servers scooping creamy delicious icecream and samples as fast as they could. This place was busy on a hot steamy Saturday and every table was taken but was able to get 1 to enjoy a French vanilla cone that was devoured in less than 5 min. They make many different types of fudge and taffy in house . Great beach vibe atmosphere in this cute downtown location that has been a Galveston staple since 1976 although his family has made candy since the 1920s. They even serve Purity ice cream which is Texas' first ice cream manufacturer, founded in 1889 on Galveston Island. Definitely worth a visit! read more

I've been visiting since I was a little girl, and coming back reminded me exactly why it's such a staple on the Strand. This place has been part of Galveston for generations, and it still delivers that same magic. It's always busy, always full of energy, and there's truly something here for everyone. The candy shop alone is worth the stop--rows of old-fashioned sweets, fresh confections, and that nostalgic atmosphere you just don't find anymore. The divinity is divine, and the ice cream is just as good as I remembered. I had the lemon custard (so good!), my brother got a scoop of chocolate on a cone, and my friend ordered cinnamon. My mom insisted she didn't want anything...until she tried my friend's cinnamon. She loved it so much she immediately went and got her own, which says everything. And for $5 a scoop, two could easily share. This is one of those must-stop places when you're on the Island. It's been a while but La Kings never disappoints. I even picked up doggie treats for their pet section. Taffy pulls throughout the day to wow candy lovers. This place is like stepping back in time! There's tables for dine in or take it to go. Very large location/showroom and every kind of candy you can think of. Coffee, homemade ice cream, shakes, and malts! All the workers are friendly and ready to serve you. Parking can be tough because it's mainly street parking but if you park down the street a walk down the strand can be a fun adventure. read more

Le King's is a must visit in Galveston! I went during Memorial Day weekend and it was absolutely packed wall to wall with people. I tried the strawberry cheesecake ice cream which was smooth and creamy. The ice cream was such a large portion for the price and definitely worth the visit! read more

Still my favorite spot on The Stand! LA King's has been a childhood favorite of mines all long as I've been alive. This is the only ice cream I favor over blue bell brand, Wherever I'd watch Bonnie and Clyde the scene when the big police guy exit with the tiny box of ice cream, makes me think of LKC ice cream. I can't leave Galveston without getting my scoop. Pearline pecan tasted better than my fav butter pecan. Only at LA KING'S though. I normally wouldn't get Pearline pecan. No military discount. One scoop is $5. Visit on a Sunday afternoon, it was quite a crowd, in January. Taffy man was making fresh taffy and still throwing it to the crowd. I love seeing this. A visit to Galveston wouldn't be complete without the experience of passing through La King's Confectionery on The Strand. The history of candy-making here goes way back to Jack King's father (Jimmy) who started making them in Houston back in 1927. The Confectionery opened sometime in 1976 in the old Victorian building that you see today. It's definitely more than just an old fashioned candy shop. The candy does seem endless when first entering the shop. There's saltwater taffy in the back, and an area where you can see it being made. We didn't get to see the taffy pulling demonstration during our weekday visit, but we did see a huge variety of ready-made flavors for sale. They even had seasonal ones such as Eggnog. This is also near the Purity ice cream counter. A brand that was founded in Galveston around 1889 (before the Great Galveston Hurricane). They happily offer samples to help you decide on a flavor. I must warn you ahead of time. The portion sizes of the ice cream are massive. We ordered 2 scoops apiece. It was more like 4 huge scoops. It may have been a whole pint. It was packed into the large cup (no air pockets whatsoever). I would have just selected one scoop had I known. It's definitely worth the price. I really enjoyed the Banana Walnut and the Coffee Bean Flake flavors. I think my husband had different flavors that he also enjoyed. I was too focused on the huge pint in front of me. We didn't purchase any candy to take with us since we were leaving on a cruise ship. The Chocolate Sand Dollars were calling my name. I would have liked to try the Milky Way latte. Yes, there's a coffee counter as well as fresh roasted nuts and popcorn. This place deserves many more visits. I kind of wish we had more time in Galveston. It was definitely a feeling of being a kid in a candy store. An overwhelming selection of sweets! It's too nostalgic to pass this place up. Highly recommended! read more

The fact that it has survived and fortified itself against change and when you walk in you are in a Time Machine and see a bit of history before your eyes. It's so original to its original time from the counter space and even the machinery they use to this day for the taffy is of period. The ice cream Sunday was made with real fudge featuring their home made ice cream (mint chip) and the hubster got a strawberry milkshake he just couldn't put down. There's cotton candy, taffy, popcorn, chocolate and chocolate covered everything, every candy from your childhood, every gummy candy imaginable, ice cream, ice cream floats, water, and an array of other unique drinks. Stopped by this popular sweet destination on a Sunday afternoon with family this summer. The store was very lively and packed full of children, exploring all the different types of sweets, but I stayed mostly towards the front and tried out the coffee menu. My aunt and uncle got the vanilla frappe, but I got my usual at other coffee shops, the caramel frappe. It was sweet and packed a moderate caffeine punch. Second time back here, and now I am certain that I will need to stop by every time I visit Galveston. Very lively and popular spot when we visited so a bit competitive to find seating inside. The desserts are worth it though! This time we got a single scoop of cookies n cream in a cup. The server really packed it in the cup so honestly it came out to more like 3-4 scoops of ice cream, which was perfect for sharing! I ordered their cookie and dough after reading some Yelp reviews and honestly it was just okay; nothing fancy about it and it tasted like every other cookie and cream ice cream. I've been coming here ever since I was little and it's always worth a visit! Stepping inside really feels like taking a step back in time. Everywhere you look are cases filled with every sweet you can imagine. Most of them are made in-house. I'm not aware of many other places in the area that hand make a lot of their sweets. What makes this place even more impressive is the taffy that's pulled in the back of the shop. You get to see the process from beginning to end. Whether you're a kid or a fully grown adult, I don't think this experience is limited to any age. Once they're done making the taffy, they'll wrap up each individual piece and toss one out to everyone in the crowd. Lots of fun and a great way for people to try out freshly made taffy. Aside from the taffy, I'm also a big fan of the ice cream. They serve Purity ice cream which is apparently Texas' first ice cream manufacturer and founded on the island. I opted for the coffee bean flake. What stands out aside from the actual coffee flavor is really the creaminess of the ice cream. I got a scoop for myself but you could easily share this with someone else and be satisfied. Overall, I'd say no trip to Galveston would be complete without a stop to La King's. I had to stop by this jewel in Galveston tx during Mardi gras they had so many different varieties of treats and ice creams, I tried they apple pie flavor and Mardi gras flavor. The apple pie flavor was my favorite so I had me a few scoops...lol. This place was beautiful and the customer service was next level. All of the treats were fantastic. Obviously I didn't try everything, but lots of options to choose from including ice cream, packaged chocolates and other candy. Prices were fair, atmosphere was alright. Though in the ice cream line, staff were rushing me while I was trying to get a good look at all of the flavors. I also saw a staff member attempting to talk to an old lady who couldn't hear very well, in which they seemed to get impatient with her. I just left with 2 pounds of taffy that while having many different colors, all exactly taste the same. This is homemade taffy with no different flavors.
