We've come to the Star Drug Store several times now. On this visit (much like the other visits), we were warmly greeted at the door and were advised to sit wherever we wanted to. We came for breakfast and left very full and satisfied! The food was so yummy and perfect to start our day. Star Drug Store -- May 23, 2026 Heard so much about this original 1886 gem it's time to give it a try. The black iron red upholstered swivel counter seats look ancient! Ok, too much so let's go with vintage. Yeah, that's the ticket! There seems to be an upstairs area wonderfully lit with all types of Americana & beach decor. That area use to have cots so druggists (pharmacists name decades ago) could monitor patrons who took medications sold to them. The marble rectangle counter called a "horseshoe" (it isn't) is the clue since it appears smallish by modern standards. The counter base tile. It may date to 1917. Great sweet OJ got me started & I recommend it! A tasty breakfast menu caught my attention so I ordered the Brkfst BLT w/Country Potatoes & a Scrambled Egg even though it was straight up noon! For me, Star has a morning feel to it & the 8:30am-2:30pm hours suggest as much. I it! Thejuice was first & served cold -- makes a difference. It was sweet sans pulp & just delicious! Hit the spot! The BLT was fabulous! Two huge crispy strips of bacon topped thick slices of ruby-red juicy along a cool bed of lettuce in between 2 toasted slices of wheat bread with a perfect spread of mayo on each. Nicely grilled cubed potatoes complimented the plate --YUM! Can't forget the scrambled egg. Not runny or too fluffy. Just right! Damn! This place doesn't miss! The Patty Melt & Club Sandwich are on my list. Any dish with eggs would be fabulous. Best eggs! BTW, Star DS is the oldest drug store in TEXAS! read more

When my travels bring me to Galveston, the strand is always on list of places to visit. In the mood for something different, my daughter's friend recommended Star Drug Store. Sounded good to me, sign me up. After a brief search for parking, we hopped out and got in about an hour before closing time. This is one of those joints that serves breakfast and lunch, the closes. Noted for my next visit. We walked in and were greeted promptly and seated. This place gives off a general store with an old diner type vibe. I was digging it, feeling very nostalgic. The nice waitress took our drink order, and we perused the menu. With an hour left to close, I prompted my party not to take their sweet time. The menu has a lot of delicious looking breakfast items and some yummy sandwiches. In the mood for brunch, I focused on the breakfast portion, as did most of my party. All, with the exception of my wife ordered the French toast with bacon. I ordered my bacon crispy. The wife ordered a BLT of some sort. The food came in good time. We all got to work quickly on our plates so we fill our bellies, and let these nice folks go home. One of my kiddos complained their bacon was too crispy. Looking down at my bacon, it looked a little limp. I took a bite and my bacon was like rubber. Well crud. The waitress mixed the orders up. I could have just got their bacon, and they could get mine, but I do not like fingering someone else's food. That was on me, but if you do not like chewy bacon, ask them to make it crispy, and not mix it up. I started on my plate and woofed the French toast down. It was pretty good. I will admit I had higher hopes and it was a bit underwhelming. Tasted more of the griddle than I wanted it to. That being said, it still was pretty good. We all finished our plates, looked around the store briefly, paid, then were gone in a flash. Overall, not a bad experience. We will be back on one of our future trips to the strand. There were a lot of menu items that I would like to try. As I browsed at other entrees of other patrons as I walked out, I got a better idea of what to order next time. Service was fast but food is mediocre. I would recommend this place for the ambiance and nostalgia. But other than that absolutely not! Burgers tasted like freezer burn definitely not worth $15 maybe $10 if that! Cesar salad was about the best thing. Patty melt was ok nothing that made it over the top it was missing flavor. Chicken sandwich was tiny for $18 not worth it. Overall come for the nostalgia and look around but skip the food. I have been wanting to come here for some time now and finally made it today. Parking is metered on the street or if you go a couple of blocks north there is 2 hour free street parking. Outside it is charming with its outdoor signage including a Coca Cola sign. The interior has table seating on both sides of the famous horseshoe counter in the middle with bar stool seating at it. The interior decorations remind you of an old timey drug store diner but without the drug store part. I chose a table and ordered the hamburger with no cheese ($13.25) and had them add as a side their tomato soup for $3 more. The food arrived about 10 minutes. First of all, the 1/2 lb flame grilled beef patty with a nice slice of lettuce and tomato with some mayo on a soft bun was delicious. I added some ketchup and I thought several times how good this burger was. Next the soup is brothy and not creamy and has bacon, tomatoes and rye bread pieces as part of the content. It's different for sure but in a very good way. I would order it again. Also my table service was fast and friendly. The restaurant sells souvenirs along with other nick-nacks. Upstairs is a series of wall art also available for sale. Finally the bathroom was very clean. Only open for breakfast and lunch. I would like to come back for some of ice cream goodies. read more

As someone who lives for vintage charm and little slices of history, Star Drug Store is one of those superrrrr rare finds that feels like stepping back in time--in the best way possible tho! I visited during the week- I mean who doesn't love Galveston (one of my favorite places to reset and recharge), and I'm so glad I stopped here! Besides, it's been on my to do list! I ordered the pancakes and whewww--let me tell you, they were not playing around. Fluffy, golden, and HUGE--definitely enough to share (but I almost didn't want to ). Perfectly paired with fresh coffee and sweet service from a kind, attentive team. The tiled floor, the vintage soda fountain, the historic vibe--it all made my little history-loving soul so happy. You can just feel the stories in the walls. If you're ever in Galveston and want a place with heart, heritage, and hearty food, don't skip this spot. It's more than a meal--it's an experience. As far as service, the lady at the front - I believe she's the manager... was amazingggg. Patient and kind. So I walked in as a single sat next to a table of seven the waitress came to the table of seven at least five times and only one time did she come to my table we were sitting next to each other I ordered the Reuben with the coleslaw The coleslaw was the worst slaw I've ever had in my life and I love coleslaw. It had way too much vinegar in it, and it was not edible at all. The waiters explained to me that it was garlic slaw. It was not it was vinegar slaw. As far as the ribbon sandwich, let me say if you went to the store and bought sliced pastrami, put two slices on a piece of bread, literally and a couple tablespoons of sauerkraut with some thousand Island dressing on a cheap piece of rye bread that was probably from oral wheat or a store-bought brand. That is the explanation a total joke of a sandwich and it was $15 for the sandwich so disappointed I will never go back there again. Absolutely wonderful experience here! We sat at the bar and enjoyed getting to watch everything get made. We were super impressed with the level of skill the cooks had and the speed they worked to get all of the orders cooked and keep the stations clean. We never had an empty glass thanks to everyone keeping an eye on our cups. The food itself was delicious! I had the French toast and it was like a custard and funnel cake combined into a fluffy cloud. Our order also had the Reuben that my 8 year old devoured with enthusiasm! Love a cute old local place. Used to come here a lot when I lived in the same building The pricing is a little weird because it says extras are $2 but it's only for one extra item and then after that you pay a premium. Wish someone would have told me. I ended up paying close to $20 for the picture I have attached. Had I known I would have not opted to get all of it. Heads-up from the waitress would have been nice. Went to try the breakfast for the first time. Basically you get one side and then upcharged for the other such as if you get potatoes then the bacon is an extra charge. Very expensive and not at all worth the money. When I made a comment their was no concern and we were basically ignored. Upon entering we were greeted by a friendly, elderly gentleman that provided us with menus and instructed us to seat where we liked. Our waitress was at our table in no time to get our order. While waiting for our lunch we had the pleasure of looking around at there delightful merchandise in glass cases. I got a club sandwich and my boyfriend ordered a patty melt. Both were delicious! The price was good too. The open kitchen is in the middle of the store/restaurant where you are able to watch your food being prepared. So I decided to go this place, which interestingly enough is near another place that I love to it, The Black Pearl Oyster Bar. Anyway it was clear that mostly the 55+ crowd likes to have lunch hear and I can see why. Walking in the place is like stepping back in time. The drug store must have been a bustling one on its hey day. I would love to get more history on the building and what not, but for now let's talk about the food and service. So I choose the the sandwich sampler which came a choice of side and a dill pickle. The sandwiches were tuna, pimento cheese, and delicious curry chicken salad. I got the dill potato salad as my side. The woman behind the counter was helpful and polite at first, we'll come back to that. The sandwiches were wonderful, the potato salad needed salt, and the dill pickle was unusually chewy like it was old. The milk shakes that my waitress was making for others look tasty and I'll certainly get one next time I go there. So my waitress was near me, behind the counter (they have an open kitchen concept where you can sit at a bar and eat and watch what's going on behind the scenes), and I mentioned to her that my curry chicken salad was delicious and she looked up at me with an almost irradiated look and said in an almost equally irradiated tone "thank you..". Additionally, she never once came back to check on me. They were busy but not crazy and she wasn't the only server working. Now, I'm always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt or take into account that the person may be having a bad day. However, in this instance her "irradiation" seem to stem from the fact that several orders for milkshakes had come in and she was apparently responsible for making them. The reason I could surmise this is because I overheard her complain to other customers about what she was having to do. When the bill came and had a spot for the tip, I gave what was a reflection of the service I got. Folks, I work in the restaurant industry and I know how hard our servers work, but when you give crappy service guess what? Don't expect me to give you a good tip! Some of you make this mean, unfair, or even cruel and you are entitled to your opinion. For my money, which I damn sure work hard for, I'm not gonna give it to a person who can't enjoy their job and customers they serve, period. With that, I'll say it was a great experience aside from the service and food will definitely have me coming back. Although I'll probably make sure I have a different server this time. read more
