We try to make our way to Hey Sugar for the ice cream after dinner when in the area- especially when we have out of town guests with us. It's a cool little, old fashioned looking ice cream and candy shop. Hey Sugar was at the top of my list because their chocolate ice cream is the best I my opinion. Tip top- top shelf. Go there!! It's fantastic ice cream. Anyway one evening after dinner we had decided it would be too late after dinner to stop by because they would already be closed. As we drove by, I said they don't close for another 5 minutes. So we parked quickly and ran it. I'm sure the ladies behind the counter were ready to close up and leave but with a minute left before closing they did not turn us away. They took the time to help us and make sure we were all served. We tried not to stall, and they never once rushed us. Same great ice cream, same great service. Their employees represented the ice cream shop well that night and they are even higher in my personal rating. I recommend this place for the great tasting ice cream and the great service. Hey Sugar is great! Smelled like candy, ice cream, and fresh baked waffle cones! In Roanoke and right on the main drag, walk thru the village and enjoy an ice cream cone! Employees were all young but were professional, enthusiastic, and friendly. Felt like an old school candy/ice cream shop. The ice cream was delicious!! The cone was crisp and fresh but the cookies and cream stole the show. Both flavors were rich and while the mint was refreshing, the cookies and cream was perfect! Whoever was working the closing shift tn, that was honestly nothing i have experienced before. I totally understand that coming in at 8:54p was not cool at all but my friends and I had just eaten at Hard Eight and wanted some ice cream. We walked in and were greeted with a sigh, an eye roll, and "We close in 6 minutes". So my friend replied with "Can we still order ice cream?" Another sigh and a "yeah sure" and other noises to make it very well known that we were not welcome. We already knew what we wanted so we were in and out at 8:56p. I know this bc I didn't want to spend another minute soaking in the bad vibes. So sorry again that we went against the rules of the service industry but tried to make it quick and easy for her. Hey Sugar has a balanced mixture of older and newer types of candies, it's truly a candy haven. The employees were helpful and kind throughout my time at the store. I tried their icecream which is made in house and selected the espresso martini and toffee. They were delicious and refreshing on a hot spring day. They weren't too sweet which I appreciated. I picked up some truffles, dark sea salt caramel and dark chocolate raspberry, the truffles were yummy but pricey. I selected a couple types of gummy bears, sour apple, watermelon and blue raspberry. All three flavors were yummy and I munched on them throughout the week. They have a covered gazebo and open patio as well as an open area in the front to sit. They have stationery rides for kiddos to ride on in the front. I love checking out downtown roanoake and look forward to returning. read more

Great tourist small town candy/ice cream shop! Exactly what you hope to find...converted house with wood floors, bulk candy, and funky flavors of bottled pop. A tad bit pricey but no more than any other candy shop. I completely expect to see teenagers behind the counter. But you've got to be able to tell your friends that come in to keep you company that it's not appropriate to yell and holler. Also, the hometown-esque charm is lost when the outside speakers are blaring Kanye West. If you've got kids, you're going to come here. Kind of seems like the majority of the product is procured from venders rather than made in-house. Disappointing to say the least, but here is the run down... The shop is a little pricy, which I could justify for homemade or in-house candy, but...You can find much of the same items just a few miles away at the grocery store relatively cheaper (depending on where you shop). Despite this, I purchased several gummies that were very mild in terms of flavor. I was going to try the ice cream, but the young lady behind the counter couldn't confirm the ice cream was made in- house...When asked, she stated it was catered (um,ok). I was completely ready to give this place 5 stars, but then (on the same day) I visited a candy shop in Denton (on the square). What I noticed is that the prices here are higher, in some cases quite a bit higher. But then I thought about something else, the fact that Hey Sugar also sells Beth Marie's Old Fashioned Ice Cream. Now if you are on the square in Denton, you can stop in at Beth Marie's. But you're not in Denton, you are in Roanoke. That, and the fact there there is plenty of outdoor seating, does make Hey Sugar as good as it gets. So there is a plethora of expected and unexpected treats. There's also an amazing beverage cooler stocked with more soda flavors than I knew existed, including Bacon, Sweet Corn, Buffalo Wing and Peanut Butter (see photos). I ended up buying a bag of childhood memories and then went to the nearby post office (http://www.yelp.com/biz/us-post-office-roanoke) to mail some to my brother (small flat rate box worked great). If you are walking on Oak St., don't miss stopping it at Hey Sugar. Grab a treat and have a seat. Maybe even watch a movie (they had two large TVs, each playing a different, but very appropriate, movie). Definitely a very cool addition to Roanoke. read more

Such a cute little shop! My family & I stopped by after walking off dinner from the BBQ restaurant down the street. I'm from California & we don't really have little shops like this one in my town. They had so many different types of old school candies as well as sodas! I opted for their cappacinco chip ice cream in a cake cone and was not disappointed. There were chocolate chips as well as caramel swirled into ice cream! So delicious, defitently satisfies my sweet tooth. I also bought a big ol' piece of toffee that I cannot wait to try! Visiting family from out of town and I just love this place. I was there at Christmas time and my special needs son was having a rough day. He was slightly obnoxious and making a mess of everything. The young lady at the register was so kind to him. Most times when I take my son out, employees are very impatient and rude regarding my sons behavior. I came back last weekend and the same young girl was there again, smiling and being just so kind and welcoming. I overheard another employee call her by name and her name is Ava. What a magical place! I haven't been in a real candy store in years and this place is awesome! They have "penny candy", a wall of different cotton candy flavors, a ton of mix and match pay by the pound candy and pre-packahef goodies. They have a whole section of sodas too! They also had under the glass chocolates. There was also an ice cream counter. It was glorious! I wish they had a sampler pack of the cotton candy. I would have loved just a taste of all of them (pb&j, bacon, jalapeno, bbq, etc), but they only sold full containers. I loved how they had a great balance and mix of old fashioned (dare I say "vintage"?) candy with new and trendy (and hipster?) varieties.
