The prices are reasonable and they had Willie Wonka and the Chocolate factory playing inside along with 50s and 60s tunes. It's a great little spot in the middle of some delicious food in Roanoke. Along with candy, the shop offers old fashion soda and homemade ice cream. A single scoop of ice cream on a cake cone was $3. The ice cream was delicious however I enjoyed reminiscing my childhood and going to the local Thrifty's when a single scoop of ice cream was a quarter. Ah yes, the good old days. Having watched this business be constructed over the past year, the Roanoke Community pondered just what kind of business would undertake the level of remodeling and restoration needed for this previously old clapboard home to be converted to a retail space on historic Oak Street. Bulk Candy, Bulk Popcorn, hand-made ice cream, Italian sodas, exotic bottled sodas (there is even a Buffalo Wings soda....yum!!!), chocolates (they have an in-house chocolatier), old school candies from the past, salt water taffy, and probably many things I am not remembering!!! The owners are great folks, and the staff is friendly and inviting. Few businesses today find the proverbial WOW factor, but Hey Sugar definitely found it!!!! We had my daughters 5th birthday party here and it was amazing! Kacee (the manager) was so accommodating from the planning process, setting up, and the entire party! Everything went on with out a glitch! They were so organized and helpful! All the guests raved about how it was the best party they have been to. I loved that it was not your average "cookie cutter" type party! This was so different than the traditional parties I have done and loved how it turned out! This place is the best candy shop I've been to in years! If you don't get a Jack&Coke sundae you are missing out! Prices are very fair, selection is really impressive, and so many random sodas to try that you won't find at most places. Also the staff is always polite. Last time I went in two teenage girls were definitely having their patience tested by a pee-wee baseball league and their "Eagletonian" type parents. My husband & I were in Roanoke for dinner at another place. We came across Hey Sugar while we walked around after dinner. What a find! The offer all kinds of candy, sodas, and ice cream. We each got a small cup of ice cream, I had the "bees knees" which is lavender & honey flavored. OMG was it good! All of your old candy favorites can be found here. They have packaged & cased candies, plus candy bins for you to scoop into baggies. First of all, the store itself is in a beautiful old home with hardwood floors and a spacious porch. When you walk in, no matter how old you are, you'll find something to gravitate toward. I typically peruse the bubble gum, then the sodas, then the taffy, then the ice cream. I love taking home a root beer or cream soda that I've never had before. And the taffy is yummy. And, as a former Denton resident, I am so happy to have Beth Marie's ice cream. It's homemade and delicious. I always see people of all ages finding candy and laughing. Awesome little shop in Roanoke, filled with throwback candies, homemade ice cream and lots of other coolness. You will get lost walking through the shop and seeing all of the classic treats- there's bulk, there's salt water taffy, there's individually wrapped candies and there's even a small section where you can select from homemade chocolates. We grabbed a small serving of milk chocolate toffee and holy cow was it ever good. There must have been 20+ flavors of ice cream. You had your standards (butter pecan, chocolate, strawberry) and some more creative flavors (Dr. Pepper, Jack & Coke, etc.). Even the adults were excited to read through the list of flavors and decide what they wanted. There are all sorts of sizes and cones to choose from. The price is right (about $0.70 per ounce) so a medium sized cone is around $2.50. The girls running the counter and dishing out the ice cream were friendly and full of smiles. There's a cool wrap-around porch outside and a few tables in front so plenty of space to sit/stand and enjoy your treats. Love Hey Sugar! We had a birthday party there for our 3 year old daughter and 1 year old son this past weekend and had a wonderful time. The old fashioned ice cream/soda/candy shop is a perfect setting for a party with a large gazebo in the back and a huge lawn for things like bounce houses, pony rides, and petting zoos. There are already tables and chairs under the gazebo so you don't have to worry about that and they provide linens and overlays if they have the colors you like. Ashley is the event coordinator there and is so friendly and was a great help to us for both planning and setting up. Unfortunately, it ended up pouring down rain all that morning during our party but it was still a beautiful, fun, success! Elsa and Mickey Mouse paid us a visit and the kids really enjoyed going inside for ice cream, sodas and filling up candy bags to go. I am pretty sure we'll end up having more parties there in the future. read more

When you walk up, you notice chairs out front and a walk around porch with plenty of seating. Once inside its like a candy wonderland.
