Horrible!!! I grew up in Hammond and remember how good this place used to be. I ordered the beef bar b que sandwich and it was nothing but a sloppy disgusting mess. Been going to HiHo since the 80's when the bbq sandwich's were only $0.69. Boy they were very much worth every penny even today, but they do cost more now. To this day my wife and I will drive over to Hammond just to get a bbq pork or beef sandwich. They have more things to their menu now but those 2 different sandwiches are very much different then any other sandwich shop anywhere in the USA. That is 25 miles away from our house but they are that GOOD!! read more

I go there once or twice every week and order the same nothing different double bacon cheeseburger no onions no tomatoes coke and fries and every damn time they forget my bacon how and that's the first word to come out when ordering start writing the orders down if your brain too fried to remember and to the cook as well when I decided to go in after the order was wrong for my bacon got my burger back a mess never no more and I pray they lose a lot of customers for there screw ups read more

Let me start off by saying, this is my favorite place to go. All my best childhood food memories came from here or the original on North Morrison Blvd. Every-time I come home I have to have a sack of my beef or pork, if eating immediately I want it dressed, if traveling to a destination I want it "heavy" sauce! Today I spent $32 on 5 sandwiches - the dressed I ate immediately, which was ok. Kind of dry, but plenty of beef. The others I mentioned I was bringing in my road trip to Oklahoma, so they offered to put in foil, which was a great idea! (When you get them heavy, they may soak some through the bag) . I was bringing 2 for my daughter in OK who also loves them and 1-2 for my son-in-law to try, the rest I was happy to eat after my 9 hr drive! Except..... after the price increase (which I was ok - most things cost more money today, but from $3.50 last I bought a year ago to $5.00 today) I opened up my Sammy's to find this !? I drove 9 hours to deliver a taste of my childhood to open these BURNT buns that nobody took more than a bite of and looked at me like I was crazy to be so in love with this... very disappointed guys. Customer service was very quick and friendly. Prices were great. Quality for a cheeseburger, nuggets, and fries was ab a 3/5. Typical frozen fast foods. But my cheeseburger, that I asked for only katsup and mayo, came fully dressed. I disdain tomatoes and any veggies on my burger so I couldn't eat it because taking off the veggies leaves the flavor behind and ruined it. Look, I'm going to warn people ahead of time, this place isn't traditional BBQ. It's actually not really BBQ. It's more of a sandwich shop that invented a particular sandwich. The hi ho sandwich is either a choice of beef or pork that has been sliced deli thin style. It comes with a sauce that is some kind of middle ground between a spaghetti and light BBQ sauce. It's similar to Italian-BBQ crossover sauces I've found in Memphis. Hi ho started before WWII as a sandwich shop that sold their creation to travelers on Hwy 51. The area was settled by Italians and the Spitale family came up with the unique sandwich, likely imitating BBQ without actually being BBQ. Their flat top grill is great too. I often like to get hot ham and cheese sandwiches and their burgers are good and old school. Everything is better with a Barq's! read more

The lady Donna that works there is a prime example of an employee who SHOULD NOT be in customer service. This lady rudely declined me a bag of ice because a little girl had smashed her finger. She rudely responded "no, you can't have that, it's not a convenient store." I'm at this location very often and never have a problem with anyone except this lady. There are great burgers at BBQ joints. I know this. In fact, I dont have a clue if the BBQ is good or not because I came for the burger and it didn't disappoint. Cooked fresh to order this 1/3# patty is really well cooked on the flat-top like I like it. Add fries that were piping hot and some iced tea and you are out the door for around $9 That's right. $9......I can't believe people eat at McDonalds. Gave it 1 star for Rene, Zach, and the other young lady, I'd put 0 if I could. I have come to Hi-Ho for the past few years for breakfast as it is the best prices around town and Rene+Zach typically take care of me. Since I go in frequently, they know my order but the past 3 weeks I have been getting hashbrowns with sausage gravy. The past couple of times I have been there Mr. Ronnie has taken my order. Each time, I have to repeat my order 3-5 times for him to understand what I want, which has been hashbrowns with sausage gravy(like country gravy). The first time he took that order he charged me $3, which I was not used to because I typically get charged $2 for it. I brushed it off. The second time Mr. Ronnie took my order (after repeating 3xs) he charged me $3 again. This time I questioned why it was $3. IN THE PICTURE PROVIDED YOU SEE THAT A BISCUIT WITH SAUSAGE GRAVY IS $2, A PLAIN BISCUIT IS $1, AND HASHBROWNS ARE $1. If I am only trading out the biscuit ($1) for hashbrowns ($1) shouldn't my total price still be $2?? (I can't figure out how to add the picture of the breakfast menu) I explained this to Mr. Ronnie on 11/6/18 and he went to clarify it and said the "kitchen told him to give it to me for $2 because it's for me". I think he only said that so he would not be the one in fault. So I was charged $2 which is fine because that should be the regular price. Wednesday 11/7/18 I asked one of the workers about it and they agreed that it's $2 and we both laughed about the situation. They said it's $2 and if I get charged $3 tell them that's not right. TODAY 11/8/18 I was ignored when standing at the counter. JT (partial owner) had taken the 3 men's order to the left of me but turned around after and started changing the coffee. I was a little confused considering he made eye contact with me and knew I was there. Mr. Ronnie was working drive thru and started asking the people at the counter if our orders had been taken. I told him no. He asks what I wanted and I told him "hashbrown with sausage gravy." (only once) he goes back to the kitchen and says THE WRONG THING so I say again louder "sausage GRAVY, not sausage, SAUSAGE GRAVY" the partial owner JT relayed it for me. Mr. Ronnie walks out and grabs my debit card WITHOUT saying the price of my order and charges me $3, and then tosses the pen at me(as if he knew what was about to happen) and walks back to the drive thru window . I immediately think to myself "I really don't want to ask why I'm being charged $3 instead of $2 because he's not going to understand. Let me ask this guy." So I as the partial owner JT why it is costs $3 not $2. Before I can even get all the words out of my mouth, I already see his eyes rolling (as if he knew). Keep in mind, I come in almost EVERY morning and never have a problem with Rene, Zach, or the young lady, they understand my order clearly every time and I have even talked to them about the price of it and it's agreed that it's $2 full price. JT tells me "that's not what you ordered" and I said "I want hashbrowns with sausage gravy, like the one with the biscuit but instead hashbrowns it should only be $2" He says "that's not what you ordered. It's not even that price on the menu." I walk to the menu which is taped on the counter and point to the biscuit with sausage gravy and the price is $2 and then I explain to him the same thing I explained to Mr. Ronnie. I don't even think he was listening to what I was saying because he kept mumbling under his breath, by that point I ask for a refund because I'm not paying for something that is not priced correctly. He snaps back saying "well I can't refund you on your credit card" and so I snap back with "it's a debit." And he says "well I can give it in cash." Hands me the money and I walk out while saying they need to go back to school to learn simple math. I realize I forgot my debit card and go back and as I am leaving I heard someone comment about my sex which is irrelevant to the matter. However, I am typically the only female getting breakfast from there around the time I go so for someone to say that while I'm leaving really left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm mainly upset because even if Ronnie and JT(partial owner) understand the price problem, I don't think they would ever apologize or treat me the same before all of this happened. I also don't want to go into a place where I am going to be treated differently because I'm a woman! I'll start by saying, I love the food here. Never had a problem with that. However, I will never return here because of how I was just treated by the owner. My credit card has a chip that unfortunately for me and businesses, no longer works. What should have happened, was that I should have been asked about my card; or I should have been informed that my card was not being accepted; or asked if I had a different form of payment. Instead, I sat waiting for 10 minutes until finally prompted. And when I finally was able to inform them about my chip, he decided to prop open the drive thru window and SHOW ME that it wasn't working (instead of listening to my suggestion on how to make the card work). It was the equivalent of speaking to a child explaining to them they just did something wrong. No one deserves to be treated like that, thus I quickly decided to leave and go elsewhere. If you love the food, like I do, great, eat here. However, I will not, nor will I recommend this location based strictly on the level of service. read more

Not sure why Hi Ho causes such high blood pressure in folks. It's likely because when one thinks barbecue, you're thinking ketchupy-sweet, tangy flavors on slow-smoked meat. That's not what Hi-Ho is all about. Hi-Ho is pork or beef sandwiches, saturated in a thin sauce. Think of V-8 juice with a touch of vinegar thrown in. Hint of smoke. It's great stuff, but if your radar is set for traditional barbecue, you'll be disappointed. The buns are toasted on the grill. The meat is warmed, placed on the crispy bun, and the sauce is mixed in right there on the hot grill. (Very few places still do this!) In fact, your sandwich will usually have a darkened ring on its top--collateral damage from the grill surface. Don't sweat it, it just adds to the experience! Ask for a "pork heavy" or "beef heavy." Extra sauce, enough that you'll have to peel the soft, soft bun off the wrapping paper. One of the best moments for me is when you get your order. It comes wrapped in paper, and the spillover sauce actually serves to hold the paper together. If the package is put together properly--and they've been doing this for decades--peeling off the paper will just take the top layer of skin off your sandwich. For me this is heaven!! Perfection in paper with toothpicks. Go to Hi-Ho expecting a good, wet sandwich. Add some barbecue chips and a Barq's root beer. Let life be good again.. read more

Well being new in town and looking for a place to try. Saw some of the reviews for this place having the best burgers. I have to disagree just a tad. I ordered my burger with mustard not mayonnaise, got it with mayonnaise anyway. Meat has no seasoning. After dousing it with salt and pepper it was semi-acceptable. I wiped my burger down with a paper towel. And proceeded to "eat it", even though my husband kept telling me to send it back. The only thing I did like was that they toast their bread. And now after we leave, my husband says he found a hair in the fries but didn't want to tell me! He knows I NEVER would've eaten anything else after that. Folks behind the counter were more worried about chatting than the customers. Ordered a pork bbq sandwich and it came out with SO much sauce that the bun was already soaked and I had to eat it with a fork and knife. The sauce that was on the pork didn't even have a smoky or BBQ taste, in fact it was kind of skunky. The sauce on the table was ok and made the sandwich edible. The French fries were pretty good. My hubby and his family LOVE this place. I think it's because it's one of those nostalgic things from your childhood. He took me here when we went to visit family and was SOOOO excited and told me how AWESOME these sammies are. Eh. The BBQ sauce isn't like Texas BBQ sauce, not as spicy/flavorful. I got a beef and a pork sandwich; I preferred the beef. The meat was tender. I ordered it "heavy" (lots of sauce!) with cheese, and I forgot the other term but it meant lettuce, tomato, and mayo. I thought cheese, lettuce, tom, and mayo was kinda weird on a BBQ sammy... I also added pickles and was told I must be from Texas. (well, what's wrong with that? nuttin better than japs or pickles with bbq!). As for the atmosphere, it's just an old fast food joint, nothing special. The sandwiches were good, but nothing to write home about. The toppings ended up not being weird, but if I went again I would forgo the cheese. I can't say I understand the hype from the fam, but maybe it IS because I'm from Texas! read more
