I almost ran to Hi-Lo Taco on a whim, to beat a rain storm for takeout, from the Holiday Inn Express hotel. I saw the reviews on Yelp, and they looked good, so I was going to give it a try and it's only a two to three minute walk. Well, I'm very happy that I went to Hi-Lo! Everything was seriously delicious. I got the "Good Queso and chips", and the following tacos: Grilled Snapper Taco, Smash Burger Taco & Pineapple Pulled Pork Taco. I have tried a lot of tacos in different states, including Texas, and these were sincerely some of the best. I liked the Smashburger Taco, however, I do think that the Pulled Pork Taco and the Grilled Snapper Taco were the best I've ever had! Do yourself a favor and come to Hi-Lo and enjoy delicious food. If it was not going to storm for hours, I would've just stayed and had a drink there. It is a bright clean open facility and the service was friendly and prompt. Service was fast, food was meh, drinks were okay. It's a bustling place on a busy street. Went just before sips and the place was already packed. Forgot to snap a pic of the food but it was nothing to write home about. If you just like eating food in taco form this might be great for you, just don't expect traditional taco flavors. I recently tried the Fajita Bowl from this place in downtown Philadelphia. I opted for grilled chicken as the protein. Since it was a takeaway order, I enjoyed it later in my hotel. The portion size was enormous, and I couldn't finish it in one sitting. Came here for the 2 for $30 CCD lunch special - nothing to write home about but wish i could give it like a 3.5 instead. The special came with queso, guac and salsa as an appetizer and then our choice of 3 tacos each. The queso was good, but the salsa was lame. The guac was fresh but desperately needed more seasoning. We got the cajun shrimp and the pineapple pulled pork tacos to share - the cajun shrimp was fried well in a light batter and it worked with the bed of slaw. But the pork tacos were too sweet and heavy. They needed more of a citrus (despite the pineapple and salsa verde) to cut through the meat. Didn't taste much of the verde at all. Their tortillas are good tho! I also got a spiky spritz from the zero proof menu and it was the best thing i had here - suuuper refreshing. Such an amazing happy hour spot in center city!! My girlfriends and I came by here and had a blast! We all got tacos and the triple dip combo as our food. I grabbed a chicken burrito, and wow, it was incredibly cheesy and the chicken was perfectly tender and flavorful, not chewy at all. I actually stopped in because I spotted their frozen margarita machine while walking by after teaching at Jefferson, and I'm so glad I did. As a City worker, I'm always looking for deals I can snag using my City ID. This week, for our return back to the office full time, Hi-Lo was kind enough to offer a 10% discount. Hi-Lo is located right on the corner of Walnut Street, next to Scoop Deville. Since I was using my ID, I walked in and placed my to-go order with the host. My food was ready in about 10 minutes. I ordered two tacos and a side of jalapeño-lime slaw. Not only did everything look amazing, but the flavor was out of this world! Jalapeño lime slaw was slightly spicy, but nothing I couldn't handle. It had crunchy fried onions on top and was a refreshing side to enjoy with my tacos. The mushroom asada taco was unreal! The smoky flavor was on point. I also enjoyed the queso fresco and rice mixture in the cauliflower tinga taco. The tortillas were soft and buttery. Both tacos exceeded my expectations. I'm glad I got to experience Hi-Lo! Go Birds! I came here after the parade for lunch. They were very efficient handling such a large crowd. The tacos were SOO good I was surprised because the trio app was kind of lame. The highlight, however, are the fish options. The cod was great, wonderful texture and the sauce on top was thoroughly enjoyed. The mushroom asada taco is not something we typically would've ordered but greatly enjoyed. Appreciate when tacos are not double-wrapped, which these were not. I'm not sure if this is an everyday offering as it isn't on the drink menu but we were offered a pitcher of margaritas for $22, which was a pretty good price for the amount we got. I've been to Hi-lo taco a few times now. Each time I was treated to the best tacos in the city! I had the most fun there during happy hour. The margaritas were flowing, with your choice of the Hi-lo Silver Margarita or the Strawberry Margarita discounted for Happy Hour. Both are strong and hit the spot. The Chips and loaded queso are are a great sharable start to any Happy Hour there. But when it comes to the tacos you might not want to share. They are that good. The Cajun shrimp taco is outstanding. It may seem lite on the shrimp at first glance, but once you start eating it you will realize it's a perfectly balanced taco with perfectly fried shrimp. The grilled BBQ chicken taco is another happy hour taco that had me licking my lips. On the regular menu, the grilled mahi mahi fish taco is delicious, and the chicken bacon ranch taco is even better. The chicken bacon ranch taco is my favorite. It's the perfect ratio of grilled chicken, cheddar, bacon, peppers, onions, lettuce, jalapeños, and ranch dressing on a handmade flour tortilla. Eating that taco makes me happy! Wow! This was a recommendation from a friend from the area and I'm glad we were able to check this spot out. It's beautiful, bright and spacious inside. I sat at the bar, it wasn't overcrowded but the space in this venue is ideal. The food selections weren't overwhelming, I had a hard time deciding. A true underrated gem in the city. A place to sit down and have a drink and good food plus watching the game...all without breaking the bank! Plus, their shotglasses are shaped like boots and who doesn't need that kind of ridiculous fun on a Tuesday night? They make their flour tacos by hand and you can even buy them in bulk to go if you, like me, enjoy eating them plain like a gremlin over your sink at breakfast the next morning. I really enjoyed the crispy cajun taco, but they're basically all good, and you can get the breakfast versions all day. Most will run you $5-7 apiece. Finally, tacos with flavor! Hi Lo tacos are amazing. They offer the option to get just one taco, which gives me the chance to try different flavors. They also serve breakfast tacos all day, so I'll definitely be back to try those. I tried the two shrimp taco options, and every bite was delicious. The Spicy Matcha Shrimp is a must try with the perfect amount of spice and well balanced toppings. The Crispy Cajun Shrimp was flavorful and crunchy, though I wish it came with avocado like the Spicy Matcha Shrimp. The place is clean, and the service is efficient. HiLo is my favorite place to grab a drink and have some tacos - they have a great variety to choose from. I appreciate the inventiveness of some choices like the Smashburger taco and the Hot Cauliflower Taco (2 current favorites) right along with some great version of classics like chicken and steak. I've tried every taco on their menu at least twice now and I've never been disappointed. The wings and queso are stand-outs too. On top of the kitchen banging out great food, the bar and wait staff are some of the nicest people, as is the owner. The place also has a great vibe, clean and bright, never too noisy to talk. I opted to go for the $10 smoked bbq wings with a $4 side of rice and beans - I'm Asian, I'll take rice wherever I can with chicken, LOL. While the menu describes the wings as "jumbo", I'd really classify it more as "meaty." Loved the slightly sticky sweet flavor, and the ranch with a touch of Maggi sauce was unusual and appreciated. I've lived in Philly for the past 10 years, calling myself a local foodie. I'm not one to post on social media, but instead, tell my friends/colleagues the best place to try. Being me, I thought we would try their food and he'd stop talking incessantly about them. Little did I know, Hilo would be our "spot". We've been coming here multiple times a week for the past year. Let me tell you why.. The food. Phenomenal and consistent. I've tried every taco on the menu. Obviously, I have my preferences (aka Hilo hot cauliflower and BBQ taco), but each taco is unique and flavorful. Their weekly taco special excites me each week: I look forward to the announcement and seeing the new creation each week. The people. From the first time we went to Hilo, I felt like I was family. I can't speak enough about how much we love the people who work here. It's more than a job for them: they make their customers feel welcome, comfortable and at home. Went on a Wednesday night with friends to just catch up. Soon as we walked in we were greeted & seated. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive. We had a friend with a dairy allergy and he made sure her order was dairy free all the way down to the butter! Food and drinks came out really quick and everything was super good. Absolutely phenomenal food. Queso with burnt ends to start was out of this world, but still was nothing compared to the tacos. My group of 4 each had different styles of the tacos available and all had a great compliment of flavors. Each taco was large but enough that we easily had two each. The brownie sundae at the end was also amazing with the slight kick in it. Service was friendly and fast. Would definitely go back again. The restaurant also gives back to the community not only with local art and furniture used to make the space but also with food donations to Philabundance. Let's set aside for a few minutes how good the food is...and it's REALLY good...and talk about the staff. When you find a place where the staff seem to truly like their jobs...and each other...and you...you're likely to have a great experience! The manager, who's every bit a part of making this place as wonderful as the food is...told me recently that she has the same staff now...that was there when Hi-Lo opened 1 year ago! It's unfortunate that the chef/owner can't be out front to take in the looks and sounds of joy that come with every bite... but he's back in the kitchen doing what he does best. Creating and preparing some of the best tacos (and more) that you can experience...short of being blessed by having a Latina grandmother. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of his creations. They're a thoughtful combinations of the finest and freshest ingredients available. Pork is smoked in house and is as moist and tender as award winning bbq. The salsa is a deep red bordering on brown color... because individual ingredients are fire roasted in house creating a memorable medley and depth of flavor. And the tortilla chips...oh, those chips!!! I like a thick chip and my girlfriend likes thin chips. We both agree that Hi-Lo tortilla chips...are "perfect chips"!
