Have been going for years and always loved it, but was VERY disappointed by service and food on a recent visit: Went on a week day for my birthday breakfast. Wanted to order the baked eggs, which are my favorite. Was told it was too late and they stopped serving them at 11.30am. It was 11.35 when we were seated and 11.40am when I ordered. The waitress went to the kitchen to double check, my friend even let them know it was my birthday. She came back from the kitchen with a 'NO'. Adding insult, the table next to me was delivered baked eggs in this time frame. My friend and I ordered the smoked salmon omelet instead. It was awful! The salmon was this pinkish white color and tasted horrible, Both of us picked at our food and left with a very bad experience. Always a bad move when a business will not make an exception with the customer in mind. That is a deal breaker for me, will not be returning. read more

First time eating at this amazing breakfast place housed in a 1912 house. The food was so delicious and perfectly prepared. I always order my eggs over medium and this is the one place that hit the nail on the head. My latte was perfect and so beautiful. Wait staff was really friendly and competent. Eh. Tip for restaurants: you really should try to accomodate large groups. This includes, but certainly is not limited to: 1) Accepting reservations 2) Splitting the bill for the group. This makes it easier for you and for your customers! I'm absolutely horrible with math, and now that I recalculated things, I think I screwed up with my math. I hate when this happens because I want to pay my fair share of the bill! Even if your "system" doesn't allow splitting of the bill, at least make it easier for people to read and understand the charges bill instead of "3x suchandsuch dish." It was still early, and these things make my head want to 'splode. 3) If there are empty tables in your "non-serving area" - use them for a group 4) Don't make the group wait for over an hour 5) Don't "generously" give yourself a 20% tip for groups. I understand the need to add tip for groups, but make it 15%. That's the standard. If service was above par, people will tip you more. The decor was ... very Madrona. It really does remind you of visiting someone's grandmother's Victorian house in the historic district. The service was prompt (once we were seated) and friendly. I was actually surprised at how fast our food came out after they took our order. We spent more time waiting for our table than we waited for our drinks and food to arrive. I ordered the French toast. It was alright. I've had better, and I've certainly had worse. The cinnamon roll was good, but it was mostly just cinnamon and roll - no icing, no pecans, none of that jazz. But it was tasty all on its own! If someone in the group orders the French toast, use the almond butter on the cinnamon roll. It works! The complaint I heard around the table was mostly with the meat and egg dishes and the lack of meat. There didn't seem to be a whole lot of meat mixed in with those dishes. The other complaint was with the prices. It was a little on the pricey side for a breakfast place. $9.95 for 4 slices of French toast, and $11-12 for any egg dish. Talk about homemade! This cute restaurant is inside of an old craftsman style home, which I would assume dates back a few decades or more. There is a quaint little cafe at the entry where you can grab a coffee, tea, or baked good while you wait to be seated upstairs. The tables are all fitted inside of the small rooms of this old house. An unused door separates a dining area from the kitchen. The tables are mismatched, and they have seating in the old "back yard." We happened across this restaurant while searching for a breakfast place on Google, and I am glad we did. The food was great (portions are a little small compared to most American restaurants) and the staff is very real, raw, beautiful people and great at what they do. My friends and I were actually planning on going to Cremant another great place in Madrona, but my friend really wanted to try the Hi-Spot and I am glad we did. Food is decently priced, had a huge breakfast for just under $10. The food is Americana with a Mexican twist. The host and service was extremely nice and we scored some free Stawberry Rhubarb coffee cake while we waited to be seated. If its a nice day I highly recommend the patio. On a quest to sample new restaurants (so that we could have new Yelping material!), my friend and I decided to visit Hi-Spot for their brunch / midday fare. First of all, I'm a sucker for house-turned-restaurant establishments -- I think they're so darling. I love Dijan's and Crush for those reasons alone and now I can add Hi-Spot to that list. Let's talk food. I ordered a basic dish: an omelette (customized with bacon and red peppers) plate which came with homestyle potatoes and subbed my toast for their raved cinnamon bun. I'm no connoisseur of cinnamon buns, but it was easily the most memorable part of my breakfast. It was super fresh and not too sugary sweet. I think what made it even tastier was the fact that I snagged the last cinnamon bun of the day! **Note to others: come early for the cinnamon buns because they DO run out. Overall, the food was okay, but I don't think I would stand in line just to eat here (I once made the mistake of coming here on a Sunday morning, didn't want to wait an hour, and dined at the now defunct Cremant across the street). The brunch here is great and definitely worth your time, but that's not what this review is about. The lunch also has its moments, specifically the grilled caprese. Now, on its own the sandwaich is a great mix of all that you love in a caprese, with the fresh mozzarella wonderfully complemented by the tomato and basil. They add in pesto to make it a bit more of a bold set of flavors. Great choices, always fresh and wonderful. Now here's where you take this wonderful sandwich to the next level - get them to add bacon. Seriously. The Hi-Spot has great bacon, thick and perfect for sandwiches. On the caprese, the oil and bacon flavor works surprisingly well. Never mind the look you'll get from the waitress, I've done this twice and both times the sandwich has made my day. Hell, this sandwich changed my life! Sure, I'm a bacon fan, but this isn't merely my bacon adoration speaking, this is a brilliant idea that I have no problem sharing (or patting myself on the back for). People seem to love this place, I wanted to love this place, but the food didn't hold up to the long wait. I have come here many times before for brunch only to give up on waiting and go down the street to another brunch place that never fails. Well, this time we decided to wait. I will say that the best part about the wait is they have a fantastic cinnamon roll the size of your head and delicious coffee. Finally seated, I ordered the hash and it was un-edible. It was dry, flavorless and looked like day old pad thai, really strange. I rarely send anything back, but I had to. A solid brunch choice. I was especially impressed with the baked goods - the strawberry-rubharb coffee cake was fresh and tasty. I really wanted to try the cinnamon roll, but I was side-tracked by eggs with goat cheese and tomatos. The variety of healthy choices on the menu (homemade granola, oatmeal) was a nice change from the general brunch glottony you see everywhere else in Seattle. I didn't recognize the coffee brand, but the latte I ordered was excellent. Brunch is a highly anticipated, and time honored tradition in my world. As much as I've made attempts to branch out in the brunch experience, time and time again, we find ourselves returning to the Hi-Spot. Be prepared for a wait, as I'm not the only one with a mild obsession. Luckily for us lovely and amazing Verite coffee & cupcake is just down the street to wet your appetite. I am consistently impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of the waitstaff. The distinguished owner of this fine establishment remains very involved, and is always a delight. And then, of course, comes the food. Oh the amazing food. Just right proportions, and the kind of flavor that stays in your mouth for days. If you go here early enough, and there's no line, this is a fun little breakfast/brunch spot. They have a few "innovative" menu items that I really like (Bengal Eggs Benedict) and the service has always been pretty good. That said, the seating is really tight. It's hard to get 4 people around a table, and heaven forbid you bring a kid (need space to clear away stuff so they don't fling it). If you get here any time after 9:30 am for brunch, be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes. I have a rule that no restaurant, least of all in Seattle, is worth waiting upwards of an hour for. My favorite spot for breakfast in the city hands down. Although I'm lucky enough to be in walking distance of this place, I don't visit often enough. What I normally crave from here is a tall English Breakfast Tea w/ sugar and milk and a Hazelnut Scone w/Raspberry Jam. Let me just say that I don't even like scones, but I have found myself detouring on my way to work to pick one up. The scone has this perfect crispiness to it, generous amounts of hazelnuts, and the jam makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Mmmmmm. I'm not going to lie, the wait sucks. What are you going to do? The place is good and there are only so many seats. It's not their fault. Notable dishes: Green Eggs n' Ham-$9.50 Eggs, ham , cheese, and pesto. Very clever. A friend of mine took me there yesterday as a surprise. Surprised, I was! I had the El Pacifico omelette, which was to diiiiiiie foooooor. I had the hot chocolate, which was pretty good. I would have liked it better with a little cinnamon, but the same can be said for 'rum'. They can't all be mind readers. The service was excellent. Really nice homey atmosphere considering its a converted house. Definitely don't go with a large group the seating is very small and cozy and limiting to anything over 4. Seems very popular with families as there was a constant stream of baby carriers up and down the stairs. Also not very handicap accessible, especially for anyone in a wheel chair. We had a large group and since they don't take reservations had to wait over an hour until a table of people finally left so they could combine a few and seat us. Food was pretty good. It is breakfast after all and if you fuck that up you have no hope at all. I had the standard 3 egg affair and it was all cooked fine and quite tasty. Their rye toast is the dark rye which is a pleasant change from the standard NY type rye most places serve. The Mimosa was pretty good as well. Coffee there was nice but I'm not a coffee connoisseur so don't take my opinion for anything. Several in our group partook in the Cinnamon roll and it looked extremely yummy. I think it would be a great place to take a date for a morning breakfast/brunch. Downstairs you can only get coffee and baked goods so dont think you can slide into a free table and order some real breakfast. read more

Excellent, fresh breakfast food at reasonable prices. We kicked off our first full day in Seattle with a trip to the nearest brunch place. Although we had to park a couple of blocks away, I found that the food here was well-made. I ordered a tofu scrambler. Because if I see something with tofu, I'm going to order it. It was pretty good; I like the dressing, though I wish the tofu had been more seasoned. At the very least I can say for sure that it was healthy. I also had a cappuccino, which will be a recurring theme during this trip. Coffee, and more coffee. Not sure how to review coffee, other than it was tasty and piping hot. There was a nice heart draw in the foam on top as well. My wife had the green eggs and ham, which she loved. Pesto and eggs might sound like a bad idea, but that's definitely something that I'm willing to replicate when I get home. The home fries were crunchy and also well cooked. I can't think of anything bad to say about this place. Great coffee, food, and service! I don't typically like scrambles or omelettes so I surprised myself by ordering a scramble. I had one with mozzarella, artichoke, and red peppers. Oh my Jesus, it was amazing! They serve a big fat piece of fantastic wheat bread with it and some perfectly seasoned potatoes. Oh and I stole a piece of my niece's Bacon and it was the meatiest most delicious meat candy I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Hi-Spot gets a High Five in my book! well maybe a High four stars. Located in the incredibly cute strip of shops and restaurants on 34th in Madrona, this places dishes out some good stuff. The interior feels very homey. Everyone seemed very nice and friendly as well. I went with one of the three egg scrambled dishes. Mine had chicken sausage, basil and goat cheese. This was served with a side of home fries (extra crispy please) and thick cut homemade wheat toast. Pretty darn tasty although a tad bit light in the portion size (second breakfast anyone?) The entree plus a $2 cup of joe cost about $14. I never saw the bottom of my coffee mug as the servers kept it warmed with frequent top offs. A great addition to the neighborhood! read more

We all gathered here for another Breakfast Club. Always a good time, no matter what inconveniences may arise (this time, we'd no idea how long it would take to seat 9+ on a Sat). After 45-ish minutes waiting downstairs, we get seated. I got the Tofu Scramble sans mushrooms - it was good! I enjoyed it and would order it again. I do see more goodies on the menu. The Pros: Cute location and neighborhood Efficient service Tasty food (I had the Huevos Mexicanos, my friend had pancakes with bacon and eggs) and coffee The Cons: Though the service was efficient, there was a certain sense of apathy and it didn't feel very "welcoming". A bit noisy and claustrophobic for my taste (although I did know this going in) I thought for sure that 9:30AM would be early enough to avoid a wait, I was wrong. I've been here a couple of times for breakfast and it's incredible. My fave's are the green eggs and ham scrabble. Don't worry it's only green because they mix it up with pesto sauce not boogers. Also their cinnamon rolls are very nom. The decor is really cute and because it is a converted house you do feel like you are eating in someone's house and not a restaurant. On a nice summer morning this is a great place to eat on their patio. But no matter what time of year it is be sure to get here early or you just might die of hunger waiting for a table. read more

Unfortunately for them, they can always count on me and a group of maybe 5 or 6 others to stagger in to their bright, sunny (even when it's raining and dreary out) diggs, just before they stop serving at around 2:30pm on the weekends. Fortunately for me they are always smiling and happily greeting us, seating us, and delivering delicious brunch and mimosas to the point where we no longer feel like we're a burden sneaking in so late in the afternoon. I love the food at The Hi-Spot Cafe, even my vegan boyfriend gets to make his own tofu 'omelets' and I always end up wishing I was eating his healthy plateful of food instead of my Homemade Cinnamon Roll and Huevos a la Mexicana. I'd heard from a friend that this place was amazing, but I was not prepared for just how true that was. My friend and I stumbled in on a Saturday morning, starving, under-caffeinated, and admittedly a tad hungover. I was hankering for some biscuits and gravy. After just a few bites, my eyes closed involuntarily in bliss and snapped back open again at the sound of my friend chuckling at my reaction. Perhaps it was the deliriously hungry state I was in that morning, but to date those are still the best biscuits and gravy I've had. Hi Spot is a good solid breakfast spot where nothing was incredible, but everything was pretty good. The coffee is good, but pretty much what you'd expect at a dinner. The Sammy Sue sandwich was good with nice thick sourdough bread, egg, lettuce, tomato, and delicious bacon. The bacon here was outstanding, fairly thick cut and very chewable, almost more like pork belly. The bengal benedict was nice with some curry sauce on it, but I could have used more spice and seasoning to bring it out. I ended up adding tobasco sauce which did in fact enhance the flavor considerably. The potatoes were a bit disappointing and a little mushy. Service was good though not outstanding. It was incredibly warm inside on a fall day which was odd and I wish they had the outside part open because we ended up waiting a while to be seated. read more

This was the best brunch I had in the two years I lived in Seattle. The menu is large but high quality for a place that closes before 2pm (maybe it's 2:30 now), and offers a lot of great, creative variety. My favorite order was the breakfast burrito, which they *serve with a steak knife*. The french toast, breakfast tacos, scrambles, breakfast sandwich, and omelettes are all very high quality. It's very hard to go wrong here. The atmosphere and setting are super relaxing too. Coffee and pastries are great while you wait - if you wait, because you can call in to put your name on the wait list, which is really nice. Also, small bit but the fruit cups are really good. They're usually a throwaway item, I feel, but here they are chock full of stuff. Really great replacement for breakfast potatoes if you're not trying to fill up on empty carbs. read more

Turns out Madrona is the cutest little neighborhood and the cafe is a perfect, cozy spot to spend a rainy morning. My companion and I were annoyed, though, that they sold out of almost every kind of scone and biscuit by the time we got there... at 9am. Hello, you're primarily a breakfast joint, plan accordingly. Just saying. I got a scramble called the Round Up (mostly just for its funny name, what can I say), which was pretty delicious... I appreciated its goat cheese and tons of fresh basil. Giddyup. My friend got an intense biscuit the size of her head, it was quite overwhelming. The service left much to be desired, though. The girls (we had like two different servers, I don't know what was happening) all seemed pretty apathetic and didn't really show us any attention or effort. Then they majorly screwed up our bill at the end, instead of apologizing it was "what? oh, oops.. weird.. be right back" ..okay whatever. It wasn't a big deal and wouldn't deter me from going back or anything, but show a little bit of concern, you know? We chose to sit in the patio, where the chairs weren't very sturdy and reminded me of a backyard barbeque setting. I ordered French toast with almond butter and maple syrup, poached eggs, English muffin and raspberry jam, and a side of chicken sausage. My first impression was this was food I could easily cook at home, with a quick run to Trader Joe's for chicken sausage and English muffins. None of the food items stood out to me taste and execution-wise. Eggs were not fully poached, and the French toast lacked the egg mixture-dredging that makes for saliva-inducing food porn. I do like Green Eggs N Ham! The food is yummy, and unique, set in a cute converted old house. The kids love the Mickey shaped pancakes. Get there before 9, or you may have a long wait. They also will not seat you unless everyone in your party is there. We live a few blocks away and my husband walked down with the kids one morning while I was finishing getting ready, and they were insistent on not giving him a table for 4 since I was not there yet. I know people who come from all over the area for this place and we're so lucky to live so close (and not have to worry about finding street parking). Most delicious cinnamon rolls too! read more

I love this place! It is in a great neighnorhood and there are always tons of people wanting to eat here, but it is for a good reason. Their customer service is wonderful. They make sure to refill your coffee if need be and they are extreamly friendly. Their scones are delicious and its a good idea to grab coffee while you wait to get seated. The chorizo plate is really good, although it would say that it is best to share this plate becasue one person cannot possibly eat it all. I went here for breakfast a few days ago and, aside from how relatively out of the way it is from everything I'm used to (Madrona/Leschi neighborhood), it was a swell meal in the most darling of settings. This is a great place to bring locals and out-of-towners alike for a charming breakfast/brunch--while popular amongst 'hoodies, most people I know who live in the north-ish neighborhoods of Seattle have never been. Surrounded by a few cutesy boutiques, the Hi-Spot functions out of an old, large house complete with rough wood floors and a claw foot tub in the bathroom upstairs. A combination of decorum and traditional, small town locale gives this place a romantic and whimsical appeal. As for the food, it is not necessarily a godsend for vegans like myself, but I was perfectly content with my "tofu scramble" (which was actually more like a stir-fry). My omnivorous company greatly enjoyed their omelets and we had a splendid morning. I will be their for lunch soon. I've experienced better. For the wait and the obnoxious crowds, you are better off going to St. Clouds, which is lovely. Hi-Spot? Forgettable. It was my birthday and I had been wanting to try this place, unfortunately, I was disappointed. My Huevos a la Mexicana was edible but really it was just a bunch of eggs slathered in sour cream with a few bits of tomato. My mom and boyfriend both had the corned beef hash, which they both said was edible bit forgettable. My brother had blueberry pancakes which he ate without complaint or compliment, my sister had tofu hash which she seemed to really enjoy (but, she's vegan), and my best friend had something with bacon which she said nothing about. So there is the run down: overall a few "hi-spots" but mostly a lot of forgettable fare. Now, on to the service. Not bad. The host was friendly, the waiter was pretty friendly. but mostly this place seems to be staffed by ambivalent, hip, young people who seem to be annoyed by having to work. I'd rather not have my coffee or water refilled if the woman refilling it is going to come by to ask if I want it refilled like it's totally ruining her day. Two pluses: the cafe is in an adorable little house, which is really pleasant and bright. Also, the food is not very expensive-which made me feel a little better about the disappointing experience. This place is great. The space is wonderful--if a little cramped--and just charming as hell. The service was excellent, and matched the decor in a sort of oblique and intriguing way. We went for breakfast, and the highlight really was the coffee...which, coming from me, really means something. I'm not overly impressed with most breakfast-spots' coffee offerings. I ordered the bengal benedict, which is classic eggs-b with a curry sauce instead of a hollandaise...a little bland, but very tasty, and just a touch of salt brought it all out. The potatoes that accompanied the eggs didn't impress me on their own, but went with the run-over very nicely.
