We stopped in because of the old-school neon signage which promises a soda fountain. It's a very traditional meat-centric menu, but there are about 3 vegetarian items marked (a tortilla sandwich; a skillet; and a vegetarian sandwich), plus breakfast all day, which includes Eggs Florentine (basically a vegetarian Eggs Benedict). The lentil and cream of cauliflower soups might also be vegetarian; we didn't ask. They do malts and very affordable sundaes; kids would be delighted. There's also an enormous selection of pies, worth checking out next time. Basically it's an old-fashioned diner with a giant menu and a few vegetarian options - also apparently a liquor license as they serve wine. It's not as charming inside as outside (dropped ceiling, a couple of TVs) but if you like diners you'll feel at home. Real butter and half-and-half (with a few flavored creamers) on the table. We got a vegetarian omelet, the Eggs Florentine, and a hot fudge banana split. Service was fine. Toast is served dry so you can pick how much to butter, which I appreciate. The omelets are 3-egg, heavy on the vegetables, and the Eggs Florentine had probably a whole tomato sliced and broiled and a good half-cup of spinach. Food is very mildly seasoned, but you can get hot sauce if desired. The hot fudge banana split was a vision: as much whipped cream as ice cream, sprinkles - best shared. The strawberry ice cream was notably good and the hot fudge was generous. read more

Always a great place for food. Today I was happy to see that they had a turkey salad sandwich with fries and a bowl of soup. Clean old-school diner with huge portions and extremely good service. Prices are average for the area. I started with an excellent bowl of cream of chicken soup. By the time the blackened chicken salad arrived, I was already full. It was very good, though. The French toast made the mother-in-law very happy. The better half got an Irish Skillet and enjoyed it. She said the eggs were perfect and the veggies were fresh, though she felt it was just a bit light on the corn beef hash. That's just the Irish in her, though. We passed by this constantly when I was young, but never ate here. I stopped in after a sports event nearby with the family and had a great meal. We were a group of six seated in the side room with a huge group of at least a dozen people and never felt ignored by our server. They did a great job of getting kids meals out first and dealing with lots of side orders. read more

It's the archetypal family restaurant, with a book for a menu - loads of soups, sandwiches and specials - and one of the last places around that you can still enjoy a "Francheezie"! Waitress was very helpful. She made suggestions that were perfect. Food was very good and large portions. There was entire display of cakes and pies. We skilled. My soup was hot and good. One of the best parts is that they serve breakfast all day, which is always a win. I really wanted to love this old school diner. A friend recommended Hi-View to my Husband & I. So finally 1 Saturday for lunch we tried it. I was looking forward to a delicious homemade meal & we heard the portions were huge too. We ordered a meat loaf meal. First we had the soup & it was just kind of ok. A stale small bun was included. I had much better soup at other places. Our food came & it looked like a cheap, frozen, meal. I thought to myself well maybe this tastes better than it looks? The meat loaf was tough like horsemeat! It was probably the lowest grade if you could call it ground beef? It tasted like a expired chopped meat? The potatoes were horrible too & so was the gravy! The potatoes tasted like a cheap instant brand & the gravy tasted like the powder type you add water to! A horrible meal & it was not cheap. We shared a meal because we don't eat a lot & with a tip it was over $30! The only things that were good was the waitress, hostess the bus boy & the slice of pie included with the meal. The pie was decent. I chose Banana cream but it was like a pudding mix with a whipped topping. Again, nothing special about it but at least it tasted good. Even if someone offered us a free meal here I would refuse it. I am lucky we did not get sick. I hardly ate much at all. Terrible! It makes me sad as I have a feeling in the past this was a wonderful place to eat at. There are a few great diners still around. You may have to drive further but they are worth it. This place is not good. It was crowded, but I do not know why? If you are up to a long drive try Full Moon Diner. Picnic Basket in Libertyville has great food too. read more

Hi-View Family Restaurant is one of our go-to spots for after school events. We've been here multiple times and the food and service are consistently great. It's the kind of place where you always feel welcome, and the meals are fresh and comforting. One small wish: I wish they didn't run out of their cream of chicken soup so often, it's absolutely delicious and deliciously homemade. It's a favorite of ours, and for good reason! I stopped in for lunch. It was my first visit. I thought the food was good I had a Reuben, which was thick and the corned beef delicious. My only beef with is was that on the plate, the bottom piece of bread was now "soggy" or soft from collecting the condensation and grease from the hot sandwich on a cool porcelain plate. The 1000 island came on the side, perhaps if it were already applied to that side of the toasted rye, it would have created a bit of a moisture barrier I've read. I wasn't asked about it being on the side, it just came that way. I got a shrimp appetizer as well, which I was impressed with. It was generous and hot + the breading was good. My toddler ate that, and I shared my fries with him. Fries were good too. I had a soup with my lunch, the chicken gumbo. I don't know if it qualifies as gumbo in my opinion. It was a thicker chicken and rice soup with a generous portion of okra in it. It tasted good decent, but not what I was expecting. The service was quick and lunchtime was full. I didn't have to wait at all. The hostess was friendly and helpful. The server was maybe a "veteran" and seemed bored. She was good at her work, but maybe had other things on her mind. The ambience of the restaurant was nice and decorated for Christmas. Classic diner. My table had old dried ketchup or syrup on it though, the kind when the table has been wiped for days but not thoroughly cleaned. Overall, it was a good lunch, but also expensive. About as high of a price for a diner you can pay and it's in the suburbs. The sandwich was $10 a La cart so I had to either pay another $4 for a side of the fries or add $4 to make it a deluxe and get fries and soup. I really did think about leaving after I saw the prices. With my toddler, I could have gone somewhere less pricey and gotten something for less. The food was tasty, and I liked the look of the place, but since I'm from the city, I'm unlikely making a special trip here unless I'm meeting locals or friends and this is where they pick. They have parking in front which is a plus, but it is a shred lot with several other storefronts and competitive for a space. I'm sure this is a local favorite. If you give a chance, you'll probably find something you like about it and I am certain, the food will be good. I kept half my sandwich and reheated it at home in the oven two days later (properly) and it was great! I wish I could could 3.6 stars. read more

I love an old school establishment with extended breakfast hours. After passing and seeing cars at all hours, I finally popped in for a late breakfast after a bike ride on the trail. Think sweaty like, rather casual and ready to eat. There was a crowd, but no wait! I ordered a spicy corn, jalepenos and pickles app served hot and with a side of ranch for dipping. It was pretty tasty and it warmed well. 5/5 Whole wheat French toast 5/5 Turkey sausage patties 5/5 It hurt my heart that their sodas are Pepsi products as I prefer Coca Cola items. The good thing is it compelled me to ditch it and enjoy water, which made the most sense anyway. Pricing is pretty good. Not bad but certainly not cheap. This is the quintessential diner. Its glowing neon sign is a welcoming beacon that's visible from a distance. Parking is plentiful. When you enter, the first thing you see is a display case filled with desserts. There are two dining rooms plus a private party room. Décor is best described as coffee shop generic, but it's contemporary, bright and cheerful. Facing east, the picture windows catch the morning sun. As soon as you're seated, a server fills your coffee cup and then brings a basket of rolls. The multipage menu is extensive and breakfast items are available anytime. There is a limited selection of beer and wine. Prices are down-to-earth and food portions range from substantial to mountainous. The chow is straightforward and unpretentious comfort food ... predictable if not innovative, and very good if not gourmet. The kitchen makes generous use of the sauce ladle, so be sure to request that gravy, salad dressing, etc. be served on the side. We love to dine here when we're in the neighborhood. The staff always makes us feel welcome. Salads and sandwiches come with a complimentary bowl of soup. We've had wonderful fried chicken and a classic club sandwich in the past, but this time I tried the "Malibu Tortini," a (wheat or corn) tortilla stuffed with grilled chicken, bacon, avocado and mozzarella cheese, toasted on a panini grill. The restaurant was fairly busy when we were seated. The first thing I noticed on the table was a dirty fork. It looked like it had food dried on it. I gave it to a bus boy who then handed me another fork to replace it, which also happened to have something on it. So not a good start to our first time at this restaurant. Our waitress was darting around and it took her awhile to get to us, to the point where we already knew what we wanted to order when she finally stopped by, that's how much time we had to look at the large menu. The waitress was a little short with my our questions and seemed to be rushing us thru ordering. She would drop things down on our table and take off again even forgetting to give us napkins and straws. I get you are busy but we are paying customers like everyone else and deserve to be treated like it. Anyway, the chicken on my sandwich was dry and unseasoned. The cream of chicken soup was as thick as paste. The stuffing that came with the Turkey dinner was burnt. When the waitress came to take it back to have it remade she said "is that too charred?" Why would stuffing be charred to begin with?! And why was it even allowed to leave the kitchen looking like that?! When it was brought back it looked and tasted really good and the turkey itself was moist. But it wasnt enough to make us come out of our way to come back here again.
