Shopping on the Island of Oahu, in Hawaii... Hickam Air Force Base has a department store (on campus) for military personnel and their dependents. The "Exchange" happens to be two floors of merchandise. You'll find snacks, greeting cards, clothing, pet supplies, luggage, footwear, linens, bedding, household items, and more! There was a convenient restroom on the ground level near the elevator. On the other side of the elevator was a small stage with flags from different Asian and Pacific Island nations to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month! I looked at the clearance racks and didn't see anything great. I walked through the accessories, purses, cosmerics, shoes, and Bath & Body aisles... nothing really caught my attention. Awesome place to eat and find great military deals. Would definitely go back as the selection is good and the service is awesome.

Oahu has always been an Island with military significance. From the 1795 Battle of Nu'uanu (Kaleleka'anae), World War II, and the current posture, military forces here form a key element of the defense of the free world. With so many military installations on island, there are a plethora of shopping centers available to the active and retired ID card holder. I like Hickam most especially because of the compact and well laid out complex where commissary, BX, food court, and vendors are all within walking distance. You can find some good bargains also. While Hickam AAFES does not have the volume of a Schofield Bsrracks PX or the breadth of a Pearl Harbor NEX, I've been able to achieve some impressive savings here. When I moved back here 5 years ago (with only 2 suitcases), I needed to buy a bed & mattress. The cheapest NEX set was too "Gucci" for my Spartan simplicity. I was able to find a well made firm and comfy mattress at this AAFES store for $900 less than at the NEX. Since then I've purchased many items here and have never needed to take anything back. I also appreciate how at the customer service desk you can order pineapples for shipment back to loved ones in the mainland. Definitely recommend Hickam to all ID card patrons and encourage everyone to check prices here first. Mahalo for reading my review. read more

Too bad the Exchange used to be a great place to shop because no taxes & cheap prices, not anymore. Blame it on Amazon and other online merchants including E-Bay. I think a few benefits that still existed are one can try on the clothing to make sure they fit before buying to avoid retuning. In addition, it is very simply to return and get refund. More importantly, customers do not have to worry about buying fake products. read more

This exchange is definitely smaller than the main NEX, but for so much retail space, I'm always surprised at how difficult it is to get basic items, like toiletries or food storage containers. Every once in a while I'll get lucky and find what I need, but more often than not, I have to go to another store to find at least one item. It can also be really challenging to find an employee if you want to ask where you might find a product. The vast majority of the employees with be at the register or in the back, so unless you can catch someone who is restocking, you are usually on your own when trying to find what you need. If you need something very basic and don't have any brand preferences, like shampoo or sunscreen, you can stop here to get what you need. Otherwise, it's probably best to look at the commissary or an off-base store. read more

The main Exchange on Hickam is the best kept secret, not sure why more people don't come here as it is never crowded. It has a great selection of stuff and if you really wanted to, you could price match it against the NEX (the Navy Exchange) or outside vendors as well. I haven't come here in a while myself, however during the Christmas holidays this is probably the best place to go as it is midday on the Saturday after Black Friday (good to shop when there's not a whole bunch of people around) and we can take our time leisurely. If you live on Hickam, it couldn't be more convenient. Otherwise, just hit up the Naval Exchange (NEX) that is off base. It was a bit smaller than the NEX, but it was well stocked, organized, and clean. They have a big selection of Hawaiian trinkets, school/office supplies, pet supplies, work out clothes. Small aisle of wine (again, the NEX has a huge liquor store). Very limited women's accessories in the other building (almost no sneakers). I heard they are now accepting NEX coupons, so that is great! read more

2017.05.10 - So to continue on with the overall experience of attempting to call an exchange customer service line. This exchange is understaffed and treated like a step child since the NEX is nearby. I prefer this one as though it is understaffed you can get help in person. The NEX though has more employees and is always busy with people in it. But my problem is the furniture portion of the Hickam Main Exchange. I called the number, no answer. Called the main number, no answer. I just need access to inventory to know if you have something available. If you don't answer that is fine. But automate your inventory like Home Depot. Home Depot has been around since 1978 and AAFES has been around since 1895. 100 years, and in the digital age no way to see if there is something available in stock unless I call or go to the store. Automate get with the times. Why so harsh a review?...keep reading my other reviews about the furniture stores and exchanges and you will see why. I was in need of some toiletries for the apartment today so I decided to venture out and head over to the Exchange on the Hickam side of the base. I've been to this Exchange several times over the past few years and I actually like it. They have a few things that the Navy Exchange doesn't have. As I walked around, I quickly found everything that I was looking for but had to take a pit stop into the restroom. This is where things went "one star". As I walked into the men's restroom, I immediately noticed that all of the urinals had bags over them and were out of order. This wasn't the case a couple of weeks prior, but there was still over half of the urinals that were out of commission, now they all were. So I went in to one of the stalls, but that wasn't easy either. All the stalls had water in the floor, or some other type of liquid. So I found one that had less of a mess to use. As I walked into the stall I turned to shut and lock the door but was unable to lock the door because the door and frame was misaligned. As I tried to align the door so I could lock it, the wall that divided the two stalls moved as the screws had broken and were no longer holding the divider. This divider was being held by the screws in the main wall only. A dangerous and potential embarrassing moment just waiting to happen. I quickly left the restroom to return to my shopping. While I do recommend shopping at this store, I don't recommend using the restroom. read more

This store amazes me with how they continuously hire incompetent people. Each & every time I come the workers are rude, slow & unbearable. I recall one time while at customer service the woman exclaimed "you don't have enough money on your card!". Just down right disrespectful. I will never spend money here again. read more

On Hickam they've separated their exchange into two stores. I don't think I've seen the BX here on yelp and will review both here. The BX holds clothes, cosmetics, accessories, jewelry, and shoes. There is also an air force uniform area in the back. It's functional like Ross is functional. I normally won't come here if i'm looking for something either really nice or really specific. They have a pretty good activewear department. The men's is much larger than the women's, but I've noticed there's more women's activewear in the Hickam gym which makes up for it. They carry a lot of name brand stuff, which I love. Their sale racks leave something to be desired. I usually end up buying full price here, although it is still discounted. I have never bought shoes, jewelry, or cosmetics here because I am usually very picky about that stuff. This would be sufficient for Christmas shopping. The BXtra holds all the other items. They have a books department, office supplies, tools, home decor, outdoor, toys, fitness gear, pets, cooking supplies, beauty supplies, furniture, electronics, and aloha gear. If I need something fast, I would rather go here than the Navy Exchange because of the lack of crowds. I almost never wait in line here. The clearance racks are also full of great value items. I pack CW's care packages full of laundry detergent, deodorant etc from the clearance section here. However, if you want furniture, do not go here unless it is a last resort. The order of quality of furniture stores on bases here go Navy, Marine, Army, Air Force. The last two share the same catalog, but the Schofield furniture store is much bigger. read more

Convenient shopping for those living on Hickam. This store has everything you need by way of furniture, appliances, electronics, home decor, toys, books, pet supplies, an aisle of alcoholic beverages, Aloha souvenirs and beauty products. The BX, separate store located next door, stocks clothing, even more beauty products, shoes and the uniform clothing. Usually have what I need in stock. Most convenient (for those of us with off-island banks) for getting cash back up to $100. Always friendly employees and comparable prices. read more

This place is super low key! It's never crowded at all. While most people prefer the NEX (I do too), don't disregard this place because it has tons of selections and the people are really nice and helpful. Also, the food court is right across so you can walk right over and get something to eat or Starbucks. I'll definitely be back. read more

I don't understand the 3 star rating of this Exchange, but maybe it's a good thing? NEX = crazy overcrowded, IDs are never being checked, so yes--a lot of people just love it because it's off base and tax free. "Protecting your benefit." Ha. ANYWAY, my family and I go out of our way to shop here. Besides being low key, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the selection is good. If you really aren't looking for much of a selection, this is the place! The Bxtra offers all of the classic BX goods minus clothing which is in a separate building. I have purchased many of goods here and I come here semi often. The employees on the floor are less than helpful but on the register almost always are nice and cheerful. While its the Bx and it is cheaper to get most stuff here compared to off base, spend the time and go to the NEX down the road which has a much broader selection despite it's busy-ness. read more

If you live on Hickam and have time to drive to the NEX, do it. The BXtra has very few redeeming qualities. The selection is minimal, and the prices are questionable on most items. It does have a great selection of Hawaiian souvenir items, but most (if not all) of these items can be purchased for much less at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet. read more
