We stumbled upon this spot while driving to Round Barn from our campsite at Warren Dunes and thought, why not check out this winery, too. The rustic farm setting is lovely, and we got a kick out of the kids staring at their phones collecting Pokemon in the parking lot. The good people at Pokemon really did parents a solid dropping Poke spots at all the wineries and breweries. Unfortunately, our group of six was generally underwhelmed with the wines here. A couple were OK, but a few were pour-outs (and I almost never dump my wine out because I don't want to offend the winemakers). Nothing wowed us. Situated so near to Dablon, which offers the best wine in the region in my opinion, and Round Barn, which offers the best wine tasting venue in the region in terms over overall experience and quality products, it's going to be hard for Hickory Creek to find a way to stand out. read more

Had such a good time at this winery this past weekend! My friends and I didn't know what to except having never been there but we all had a good time with the guided wine tasting, even the non-wine drinkers who were just along for the ride. First time I found a merlot I enjoyed. We liked it so much we hung out for a few flight outside. Even though it was a rainy day, we had a great time sitting under the tent outside! My wife and I stopped in with our pup at Hickory Creek on the way back to Chicago after vacationing in the area. We loved that it was dog-friendly in the tasting room, which not everywhere is. The wine was good, the guy working the counter was pleasant if not super chatty, and there was a nice area under some old trees with tables and chairs that made us stick around to have a glass and enjoy being out in the country before heading back to the bustle of the city. Really liked this spot. We drove the 15 minutes into the country from New Buffalo, and it was worth the detour. Southwest Michigan makes some decent wine, and this was among the best of the area we have visited. read more

I can't rave enough about Hickory Creek and the amazing time the ladies in my bachelorette party had there! Brian was our tasting guide and was absolutely fantastic. He made sure everyone had a great time and was so patient with our rowdy group who had been tasting all day. We loved having our own private tasting area for the group of ten, so I recommend making a reservation in advance. The wine was great of course but our favorite had to be the winery dog, Ranger, who sat with us, high-fived, and showed us all of his best tricks! The entire winery is an Instagram lover's paradise with tons of fun photo ops and a neat tractor out front. Out of all of the wineries we visited in the area that day, we saved the best for last and are so happy that we ended the day at Hickory! If you've got a big group and are looking for a fun tasting experience, this is the place. read more

This is overall four stars. Grounds - Four stars. Lots of outdoor space, COVID friendly, and very quiet. As others have mentioned, a winery in the middle of a corn field is a bit odd. Staff - Four stars. Very friendly and helpful. Just didn't know specifics like acres of varieties and quantity of vintage. Wines - The five I picked were a blend of varieties. No sweet wines. All noses weren't very pronounced and some of the the wines just didn't have much complexity to them. The "Test Pilot" was marginal. The Pinot Blanc was flat and didn't have any taste. The Rose' was unique with its tart finish. A lot of people may really enjoy it. So make this one a must taste. The Melange was a pretty interesting blend that I had to warm up to, but did come through after a bit. The surprise was their "Petite Sirah". Another one you have to give a chance and you'll be rewarded. FYI - They waive the tasting fee for two bottle purchase. I think all places should do this so kudos! I took advantage of this and did a two pack to go. Overall, I made the visit, I tried some wines, and left thinking I am missing out. I'll save my notes from this time and try the other half of the offerings next time. read more

Veteran owned. Family operated. Delicious wine! This may be the smallest winery in the county, but they are definitely first class. The owner and his family run and operate with lots enthusiasm, great wine knowledge, and friendly service. Marks humor was as dry as some of the wine. He was entertaining and gave a great tour. OK the wine was very good, I only did a glass of one of their whites and it was very nicely priced, $5. I do not know how the tasting happens since we just ordered glasses of wine, the place was PACKED and it seems as though people were doing tastings with a tour of the actual winery. The downfall while we were there was gnats -- they were everywhere and it grossed me out a little. Otherwise, I really did enjoy the wine and would like to come back. Not impressed. The wine was good, but on the more expensive side. The chardonney was very good, but the service was pretty snotty. Our group of 4 came in - sure we're are young and we were all dressed casually from our day of apple picking, but I felt like the guy pouring the wine looked down his nose at us. He also gave me the tiniest pour ever. I expect 2 small sips at a minimum, this was 1/2 of a tiny tiny sip. Like a drip. While to the well-dressed middle aged couple he gave a big ol pour. We left without buying anything, which probably only confirmed his suspicions that we were only there for free drinks. Had he treated us a little better we would have bought some of the chardonney and some of the apple wine. read more

Hickory Creek Winery is THE most lovely winery with THE most tasty wines in all of Southwest Michigan. The folks who run it are knowledgeable, attentive, and overall really great people. There a TON of junk wines in the area (Round Barn, I'm looking at you and your "Zinfindel") so it's great to find a winery that takes their wine making seriously and produces really great wines. Michigan in general is known for its white wines, and Hickory's Reisling and Gewürztraminer don't disappoint. But I thought their Cabernet Franc - Rose was especially delicious. If the weather is nice, make sure to buy a bottle, bring some snacks (cheese of course!) and spend some time under their beautiful shady tree. read more

How fantastic is this little gem?! While getting lost in the Michigan countryside... you have to love it when your GPS goes askew! We ran onto this sign that mentioned that this vinyard was coming right our way. My husband and I looked at each other and was like, "What the heck?!" So we turned up the dirt drive and was like.. this place is too cool. We walked in and we felt like we were in another place... like Chicago. The place just gave off a great vibe.. We started talking to the gal behind the bar and she told us that their winery mainly dealt with dry wines and not the usually sweet wines that we had found at other wineries. We like dry. The tasting was free (which is big).. and you got to taste a max of 5 different wines.. each. We ended up picking out their Zero Oak Chard (we love unoaked Chards), their Pinot Gris, and a couple bottles of their Melange. Which was FANTASTIC!!! We also found out that they have had their wines at some fantastic Chicago restaurants like NAHA, North Pond and Tru. I do want to say though that their wines are more expensive than some of the other wineries in the area but you can tell the difference of the quality... and they do smaller case amounts than the other wineries. You will probably walk out with a bottle of wine... with a smile on your face! **They also have a great farmhouse that can be rented out. It is located smack dab in the middle of the wine vines and ornamental trees. Something you may want to check out! read more

If you happen to come when they have a group there and you are only a 'couple', forget about getting any service. My wife and I who do the wine trail every year, decided to add Hickory Creek to our list this year. We went there on Friday afternoon and had a horrible experience. We got there and there was a group of six at the counter, they were chatting it up with the employee and after 5 minutes she brought us the wine list. We then had to wait 10 minutes before she came back over to ask us what we wanted to try first. She then went back to the first group and another few minutes passed until we got out second taste. Then she went back to the first group and rang up their purchases and as she finished ringing them up a group of eight came in and she started talking to them for over another five minutes before we gave up and walked out. I think we got about 5 sentences out of her the entire time we were there. Oh well, it was their loss - we bought plenty of wine at all the other wineries in the area (almost 12 cases worth). read more

The wines of Hickory Creek are on par with, and in some cases eclipse, the wines you find in the Sonoma & Napa, CA, Willamette Valley, OR regions, as well as the Moselle River wines of Germany! The quality of wines are only exceeded by the friendliness and attentiveness of the owner/winemaker and his staff. Definitely a gem among southwestern Michigan's wineries. The wines we tasted were great and exceeded our expectations for Michigan wines. We bought three bottles, and would have purchased more, but for the price tag. We were told that several of the wines we sampled have been featured at high-end Chicago restaurants including Moto and MK. Impressive! We thought the ambience also was very special. The tasting room has a lot of subtle style and the surrounding property looks a little like something out of Charlotte's Web-- tire swing under apple trees, pretty red barn on a hill, farmhouse among the vines. It indulged the romantic visions of country life that I, as a city slicker, tend to have. Overall, the folks behind this winery have put a lot of thought into their choices, and it is paying off. We are looking forward to buying a case of our favorite bottle on our next visit. read more

One of the few brave wineries pushing the boundaries of the AVA. It's still Michigan and the weather is a bit crap and the soil is a bit crap. However, It's absolutely brilliant to see a winery planting the proper varietals for the area and properly producing the wines. It will be nice to see how Hickory Creek settles in, in the next five years or so. Expect good things. Most of all, the wines seemed to stand on their own. Much less tourist pandering than almost every other Michigan winery. read more

This was our first stop of our visit to three wineries in southwest Michigan. We were a little uncomfortable since we had never done a wine tasting. It is small and intimate which some people might enjoy but I like the wineries with more space. The wine server was friendly and gave us some history of the winery. They had just one red that was $30 a bottle but I didn't like it. We felt like we had to buy something and since I don't drink white wine in the colder months, we ended up buying a blush wine for my mom. Their website annoys me. read more

Excellent old world style wines. The 2008 cab franc tastes straight out of Loire Valley. The 2012 Syrah is lush yet austere.

We pulled in here after trying two jam-packed wineries. The relatively few cars in the lot were a sight for our sore eyes. The setting is farmhouse charming, complete with a tire swing. The tasting room counter was approachable, and we walked right in. We liked almost every wine here. We were informed they specialize in dry wine, which is the kind we like. Although one or two still tasted sweet to me, the wines here were much more to our taste than most of the other wineries we visited. We had planned to purchase a bottle somewhere to have with our dinner that night, and we ended up purchasing it here -- a bottle of their Melange. If you aren't keen on the crowds or sweet wine typical of the area, I suggesting giving this place a try. read more
