We visited Hickory house Bar-b-que in Denison Texas yesterday. I had a sliced beef brisket sandwich and it was so tender I cut the sandwich into with a plastic knife. They had hot gravy to put on it too and it was fantastic!! I had some potato salad with it too which was also great. And they were such a friendly staff who treated us great! And I loved the decorations in the restaurant. I will be back!! read more

The bbq is similar to a chain. Not much smoke flavor. The sauce is very vinegary and tastes commercial. The Mac and cheese is tasteless. Iced tea tastes like instant. Look elsewhere for good bbq. read more

Wow how I hate to have to give a 2 star we just where not impressed with brisket yes it was tender but it was very dry. I am a professional food advisor and i know my food. I call the side's lazy man sides WHY? open a can and dump and serv. Man get some better side containers also. Question do you not like coke or pepsi? The BBQ sauce is incredible. I've been coming here for 39 years. They've been in business for 45 years. Same family/owners still going strong. Stopped in last night, picked up some sliced beef, ribs, and sausage. Get there early as they sell out of some items early. I will continue to support this family owned business. I am not a frequenter of BBQ places, even though I like it. For some reason, it just never occurs to me to eat it. However, passing Hickory House while driving around historic downtown Denison, it intrigued me. I just never seemed to find myself driving by it when it was opened. However, one day for lunch, my desire for BBQ was just too overwhelming. So I sought it out and gave it a shot. The layout and decor was classic BBQ and made me comfortable from the minute I entered. Of course, it smelled amazing. The options were plentiful, but I stuck with my standby BBQ sausage, which is usually my indicator of a good BBQ place (sorry, I'm not much of a brisket guy). I was not disappointed. The sausage had great flavor, the sauce was delicious and the sides were amazing. I loved the beans. The downside was the cucumber salad, which was entirely saturated with more vinegar than should be consumable. Other than that, I cannot wait to have it again. Hey, this is a pretty cute little spot! Our brisket and ribs were delicious and the portions are generous. We ate out on the patio which was very nice. I don't know the history, but I see from other reviews this place has been around for a while and is a local landmark. We were there for a weekday lunch and it was busy with local men who had obviously eaten many a meal there. The staff is friendly and kind. This is a down home, family run BBQ joint! Cool interior with many old signs and Texas memorabilia. Brisket portions on a 1 meat plate is extremely generous and very tasty. Always try the first bite without sauce and it delivers an excellent taste. Did add the mild sauce and it had a sweet flavor without being overly sugar sweet. Beans were ranch style with a nice spicy kick! Other side I chose was Mac and Cheese, I am no expert on that other I can tell this is not the powdered cheese with water added to cook it. This is an amazing BBQ Restaurant. It has that down home southern touch feeling. You just feel welcome. The owners Jhonny & Shawn are super nice. Jhonny told me the that his father ran the restaurant prior to him taking over and has been in the family since 1975. I had the Brisket and sausage and it is the best I have ever had. OM Gosh! This place has awesome pork ribs, in & out brisket and sausage. We just finished our first meal here and it will not be our last. We were greeted by two friendly guys who didn't rush our decision making like some other places do. Hubs and I were sharing so we chose the tender, flavorful brisket first. Then added in the pork ribs. We couldn't decide between the spicy sausage hot links or the regular so we got both on our 4 meat plate that included 2 sides. It was all delicious. Finger lickin good BBQ. Hickory House is top notch. The brisket is super good. You can get it fatty which is what I prefer, it's moist and juicy. The hot gravy is the best around. They have great pork and sausage too. The slaw and potato salad is good. They also have a super good smoked turkey sandwich.
