Ok if your into ribs and big quantities then this is your place. First of of all we got the feast witch is an understatement because it really should be called the first thanksgiving (the first thanksgiving went on for 3 days) but oh was it worth it the ribs are all the hype there supposed to be. The only reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 is because of the wait, it took more the 15 minutes until we got to order our drinks and then another 20 until we could order our food! Super cool place for tasty American BBQ! This place really lives up to its reputation. The food was delicious, we had bits of all sorts from onion rings, to catfish and the jalapeño sausages. I finally made it to Hickory House for breakfast! While they seem to be known for ribs, I have mostly heard people in Aspen raving about their breakfasts so I wanted to try that. The restaurant is decorated with skis and has old-school wood panelling. They have outdoor and indoor seating, but it was 49 degrees the other morning so I opted for indoor seating. The servers are friendly too. I opted for a build-your-own omelette with cheddar cheese, green pepper, and tomato ($9.04). The omelette was very stuffed from end to end, just like I like it, and it was very fluffy. It came with toast and hash-browns. The sourdough toast was good and not too buttery. I don't eat hash-browns, but my friend enjoyed them, especially with the BBQ sauce on the table. If you are looking for diner style breakfast, Hickory House is the place to go! read more

What a freakin breakfast! Want a sure fire way to be full for 8 hours or more? Get their protein platter which consists of 3 things: eggs, 8 oz steak and a half rack of their oh so awesome ribs. I usually pass on breakfast steak since it's usually not great at most diners but even the steak was pretty good. I'm SO mad at my stomach for giving up on me and not finishing my plate!! This place is so delicious. After a day of hitting the slopes, I was completely ravenous (or so I thought). I ordered the Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork BBQ Dinner, which came with mashed potatoes (you can have a baked potato or fries), baked beans, coleslaw, and garlic toast. You know you've hit the jackpot when the garlic toast makes you weak in the knees. And the pulled pork was on point. Sooooo tender and juicy, and the BBQ sauce is simply amazing. Don't even get me started on the mashed potatoes!! Chunky and unreal! Unfortunately, the portion was so big that I could not lick my plate clean. I killed 90% of it, and I was sad to see the rest go. I've been coming to Aspen since I was a kid and never noticed Rusty's until this year.It's a little off the beaten path located at the far end of Main street away from most of the other restaurants in the downtown area. Fantastic Ribs and excellent onion rings. But be warned, even the smallest order of rings is enough for four people, and unless you are a big eater you can share a full order of ribs between two people. The baked beans and cole slaw were excellent, and the Caesar salad was great (but they did go a little heavy on the dressing and cheese.) Even the french fries were fresh and crispy. The service was prompt and the server was attentive without being pushy. Definitely check them out. read more

Best ribs in Colorado? That's like saying that Taco Bell serves the most authentic Mexican food. First of all, to qualify as "BBQ," the meat needs to be SMOKED, which means slow-cooked in a smoker for 5-6 hours. Hickory House, despite the use of "hickory" in its name, does not smoke its food and you can absolutely tell by the absence of smoke flavor in the meat or any pink smoke ring. I'm a Yankee and even I know that! Warning bells went off when I walked into the place and could not smell smoke, but I proceeded to get a full rack of ribs nonetheless. The ribs were decent, but they tasted no different than Chili's. And Chili's ain't got no smoker either. Place is cool and service is friendly and attentive, and if this were any other place, I would give it 3 stars. But when you claim to have the best and your ribs are no better than Chili's, you lose a star. read more

I would not recommend this restaurant at all. We were a larger party (8) and came to the Hickory House Ribs for brunch. 7 out of 8 meals were cold including the eggs, the meat and the hash browns. We mentioned this to our server who did offer to "try again". We were all hungry and said we would just keep our food. The server said she would inquire about it in the kitchen. We never heard back and never received an apology for the cold meals. At a minimum I would have expected an apology. It would have been nice to receive a discount. Not pleased. Not good. read more

When in Aspen with my wife while she was attending a business meeting, I had a free night to myself and decided to stop by for a little bit of barbecue. I thought it would be a nice respite from the typical overpriced Aspen fare. For that, it definitely met my expectations. Pricing was good and the portions were nice. I sat at the bar and watched baseball on TV while eating. The bartender was super friendly and it was a pleasant place to sit. The food itself was average. I had one of the combinations which came with both ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were okay, but I am not really sure why they advertise so vigorously that they import their ribs from Europe. I mean, I'm from the South and it's hard for me to imagine that it's really worth importing pork from Europe. Whatever. Anyway the food was okay. That a couple of different sauces (one was supposed to be spicy) but for the life of me I couldn't tell the difference. I had a slice of pie for dessert, which was good but not great. It was overly large and overly sweet, but what do you expect? At any place where you expect great barbecue (TX, the South), this restaurant is a clear three stars. However, because the prices were good (for Aspen standards) and it was unpretentious, I'll give it four stars. read more

Was looking for a place with takeout and thanks to eataspen.com, this was our choice. They do deliver, but quoted a 30-min time for delivery (certainly acceptable) and a 10-min carryout so we opted for carryout. Ordered the pork platter and brisket platter and was not disappointed with the quality of the meats and sides. My only complaint is that when I got back to the hotel I realized they'd failed to include utensils. I ended up eating with a pocket knife, which is less than ideal for baked beans and potatoes au gratin, both of which were delicious. The baby back ribs are very tasty...but just not sure you can call them the 'best in the state,' or other superlative claims. First of all, they are smaller than usual? I know they are baby back ribs...but these are baby baby back ribs?...so you may think 1/2 a rack is enough (as it always is at other restaurants) but order twice as much as you think you will eat...even the 8 year old on our dining group ordered a full slab/rack. Overall, decent prices - especially for Aspen - and the beans and coleslaw are classic preparation. The beans have a little kick which is nice. I've been dining here for 30 years. Never have I had such indifferent service. The BBQ was, as usual, serviceable. The waitress, Katy M, was utterly inattentive. What should've been a fun experience became a guessing-game for which item would appear. Appetizer? Check. But only AFTER entrees were half-finished. Salad dressing never graced the table. Coffee? Nope! Iced tea was empty from the first minute, never to be refilled. Even the check had to be handled by another cashier, as Katy was engaged in an animated conversation with friends at another table. Any chance at redemption through dessert was met with universal groans, owing to all that had come - or not come - before. Totally unacceptable. I usually wait, at least overnight, before posting negative reviews, in the reasonable expectation that anger will pass. I stopped here hoping to enjoy something different and local. I had a meal that one of the cooks supposedly developed. Menu stated it was a local favorite. Well...it tasted like something that was made by the elf on the movie Elf. Large chunks of avocado and maple syrup. It just tasted bad. For a place that allegedly takes the time and effort to import meat from Denmark (that they so graciously brag about on signs as you walk in), I'm a bit confused as to why they soak it in mediocre barbecue sauce that's filled with nutmeg/clove. Further, I'm a bit confused as to why they think meat falling off the bone is a good thing. Ribs should only fall off the bone at two places: Friday's and Applebee's (hint: it's not because they're good). No discernible smoke flavor, no smoke ring, and meat that's soaked in overly sweet barbecue sauce. Sorry, guys, what we have here is fake barbecue! This place is an old school mom and pop restaurant and it shows. A true gem in not only Aspen but the USA. Would go here everyday if I lived in Colorado! Service was good. Ambiance is the only mountain town like thing in Aspen! Food is good. I think it might be one of the only sit down places in aspen we could afford where they encourage sharing, so if your not from these parts, it's a good place for a family to eat without taking out a second mortgage. You must get the sweet potatoe tater tots. Fricken amazing! For a family of four we got he beast deal, or something, and we walked out stuffed with enough food for lunch the next day. The woman at the desk of the hotel I was staying at recommended this spot for breakfast since it was supposedly one of the best in town. Since it was Hickory House Ribs my father and I (wrongly) assumed that they would also have good quality bacon (which is a breakfast essential in my family). The first strike was that the information stated that the business opened at 8:00am. However, when we arrived at 8:00 the restaurant was still closed, and at about 8:05 or so a staff member arrived at the building with a coffee and then went inside and proceeded to unlock the doors so that we could enter. The next issue I had was with the coffee. It tasted very watered-down, and since I still felt horribly tired after drinking it I have to say that it the caffeine content was also lacking. The las issue I had was with the food that I ordered. The blueberries were not in the pancake like I assumed they would be, and were instead half-thawed frozen blueberries thrown on top of the pancake. Additionally, the bacon quality was what I would expect from bulk-bought Costco bacon, not a restaurant. All that being said, the pancake itself was actually quite tasty (once I got past the blueberries) and able to absorb quite a bit of maple syrup (which is a must in my book). I would recommend this place if you're looking for a breakfast with food similar to a Denny's or IHop, but if you're wanting something a little nicer I would definitely look elsewhere. read more
